So folks tells us what your favourite and most shocking chart moments this year were?
Mine is obvious at the 15 week reign of King Drake from April to July, never thought we would see that run again! Always happens in changeover times - 1991/92 with Bryan Adams/Witney, 2007 with Rihanna/Jay-Z and now 2016.
Not really one of the biggest in general but one of my favourite chart moments this year was The xx - 'On Hold' scraping into the top 40! That was a pleasant surprise as I thought it was just going to miss out. It was wonderful to observe as it's one of my favourite songs of the year and also their first top 40 since 2010!
Drake was definitely the chart 'moment' of the year ~ it felt like the most talked about chart event because of just how absurdly long that run was. Rick Astley and Craig David getting album #1s also felt pretty big. G'won comeback kings.
I forgot The XX got a week when they first released On Hold and it was recently - hope it gets an extended run in January when it goes A listed on radio 1 and the albums out.
Tilted becoming a hit was surprising
Sir Drake getting 15 weeks was a proper moment, we'll probably not see that kind of domination for a long time yet.
Clean Bandit ending the long run of X Factor and charity single Christmas number ones too.
Lukas Graham. Full Stop.
The Neales making the Top 40 purely on physicals was nice as well (waits for Joseph to reply telling me how he had to make the song profile as there wasn't one pre-prepared )
One Dance ruling the spring & summer with an iron fist, and the amazing Tilted becoming one of the oddest chart hits of the year *.*
The fewer number of top 40 entries compared to 2015 meaning there will be less songs to choose from in the future when we look back at our favourite top 40 hits from 2016.
Dave Clark sneaking a top 40 hit yesterday. also the David Bowie influx too & Elle King getting a top 15 hit, didn't expect it to get anywhere near.
Disturbed top 30 too *______*
A few things
Drake 15 weeks at #1
James Arthur making a big comeback with a #1 smash
10 #1s
Tilted by Christine and the Queens happened
And Clean Bandit getting the Christmas #1 when all the charity tracks flopped hard
Tilted was certainly unusual in how it took off by a Graham Norton performance, and it probably wouldn't have been given a commercial push without the resulting iTunes boost from that.
^^ Was gonna say that without GN it wouldn't have got a pish on radio 1 albeit they did add iT to the upfront list a month before that which I was loving when Tilted exploded!
My favourite no1 was probably 7 Years although there is t a great choice!
Little Mix slaying
Shout out to my ex getting to number 1 with only 4 days of sales
Biggest moments personally, not directly related to the chart~
- Disturbed becoming a hit completely out of nowhere.
- Last week, where we saw two new entries in the top 10 for over a year and arguably the best chart all year.
- The Neales getting a chart play when they were nowhere in the midweeks (and Joseph stating he didn't have a profile prepared subsquently )
- Fast Car zooming up the charts like a Fast Car and going 74-2- or something stupid.
- The 'fart in a lift' meme
- Mine and Pete's contradicting opinions on Drake :,)
Clearly this has been the year of Drake and Little Mix!
Fan or not, the release of Shout Out To Me Ex was easily one of the most surprising and impressive moments of the chart year. Everyone knew they'd become more popular but nobody predicted the heights of popularity they'd risen to. They were number 1 on iTunes with the biggest lead since Adele's Hello, went to 1 on Spotify in days and had the fastest sales of the year, managing a number 1 single with just 5 days.
Drake's 10+ weeks at number 1 was the other one.
Disturbed definitely, nothing like that in the top 40 for years.
Also In Ibiza's first week at #1 stood out to me as a surprise, especially in that week when I thought 7 Years was still miles ahead.
SOTME making #1 on less than a week's sales was a great moment too mostly because it kicked James Arthur off #1 never would've expected that.
One Dance finally being knocked off #1
Elvis' 'The Wonder Of You' is the highlight for me. His 13th No.1 Album and still in the Top 5 after nine weeks without entering the Top 100 Streaming Charts.
The only thing I can think of is Pink's brief return. This year has been mostly shit.
The albums chart has seemed more interesting.
When did Pink return?
Just Like Fire.
That's right, I had forgotten about it!
I think everyone else had too
Not exactly her signature hit
Little Mix going to #1 with 'Shout Out To My Ex' and 'Glory Days'!
Drake hogging the #1 position for 15 weeks was ridiculous. I actually stopped listening to charts for months because of his dominance.
There was literally none lmao. I can't think of a single one.
The deaths of Prince and David Bowie Especially Bowie as it lead to big sales for him
That's true and now add George Michael to that
