BuzzJack Music Forum _ UK Charts _ Biggest Chart Moments of 2016

Posted by: Steve201 24th December 2016, 02:59 PM

So folks tells us what your favourite and most shocking chart moments this year were?

Mine is obvious at the 15 week reign of King Drake from April to July, never thought we would see that run again! Always happens in changeover times - 1991/92 with Bryan Adams/Witney, 2007 with Rihanna/Jay-Z and now 2016.

Posted by: Slade 24th December 2016, 03:03 PM

Not really one of the biggest in general but one of my favourite chart moments this year was The xx - 'On Hold' scraping into the top 40! That was a pleasant surprise as I thought it was just going to miss out. It was wonderful to observe as it's one of my favourite songs of the year and also their first top 40 since 2010!

Drake was definitely the chart 'moment' of the year ~ it felt like the most talked about chart event because of just how absurdly long that run was. Rick Astley and Craig David getting album #1s also felt pretty big. G'won comeback kings.

Posted by: Steve201 24th December 2016, 03:06 PM

I forgot The XX got a week when they first released On Hold and it was recently - hope it gets an extended run in January when it goes A listed on radio 1 and the albums out.

Tilted becoming a hit was surprising

Posted by: Danta Claus 24th December 2016, 03:11 PM

Sir Drake getting 15 weeks was a proper moment, we'll probably not see that kind of domination for a long time yet.

Clean Bandit ending the long run of X Factor and charity single Christmas number ones too.

Posted by: WiseManFromLeeds 24th December 2016, 03:13 PM

Lukas Graham. Full Stop.

The Neales making the Top 40 purely on physicals was nice as well (waits for Joseph to reply telling me how he had to make the song profile as there wasn't one pre-prepared laugh.gif)

One Dance ruling the spring & summer with an iron fist, and the amazing Tilted becoming one of the oddest chart hits of the year *.*

Posted by: Snakin' Stevens 24th December 2016, 03:18 PM

The fewer number of top 40 entries compared to 2015 meaning there will be less songs to choose from in the future when we look back at our favourite top 40 hits from 2016.

Posted by: XMAS Rob S~ 24th December 2016, 03:20 PM

Dave Clark sneaking a top 40 hit yesterday. also the David Bowie influx too & Elle King getting a top 15 hit, didn't expect it to get anywhere near.

Disturbed top 30 too *______*

A few things

Drake 15 weeks at #1
James Arthur making a big comeback with a #1 smash
10 #1s
Tilted by Christine and the Queens happened
And Clean Bandit getting the Christmas #1 when all the charity tracks flopped hard

Tilted wasn't an unusual chart hit imo, it is the sort of current in trend indie electronica (similar to Chvrches or MØ) that often gets played by Radio 1 (the only type of indie that usually makes the charts these days).

More unusual imo was Offaiah Trouble - a looped mix of funky and electro house that sounded like it was from 2006.

Posted by: Danta Claus 24th December 2016, 03:34 PM

Tilted was certainly unusual in how it took off by a Graham Norton performance, and it probably wouldn't have been given a commercial push without the resulting iTunes boost from that.

Posted by: Steve201 24th December 2016, 03:47 PM

^^ Was gonna say that without GN it wouldn't have got a pish on radio 1 albeit they did add iT to the upfront list a month before that which I was loving when Tilted exploded!

That it might be but from the song itself (having known it for a year in its original french form, and knowing it was successful in Europe) it never once ringed to me as a potential UK hit, thinking it was too subtle/wouldn't have enough pop appeal to catch on (one of the cases i'm immensely glad to be proven wrong though~)

laugh.gif! You know me well :')

Stitches going to #1 was my personal favourite moment of the year, I'd loved that song for months before and been a fan of Shawn's for about a year and a half beforehand so seeing him break through finally was a really excellent moment. I also loved how Shout Out to My Ex defied all expectations and debuted at #1 on four and a bit days!

Posted by: Steve201 24th December 2016, 04:41 PM

My favourite no1 was probably 7 Years although there is t a great choice!

Little Mix slaying wub.gif

Posted by: shindymindy 24th December 2016, 05:07 PM

Shout out to my ex getting to number 1 with only 4 days of sales

Posted by: christmdhas 24th December 2016, 06:08 PM

Biggest moments personally, not directly related to the chart~

- Disturbed becoming a hit completely out of nowhere.
- Last week, where we saw two new entries in the top 10 for over a year and arguably the best chart all year.
- The Neales getting a chart play when they were nowhere in the midweeks (and Joseph stating he didn't have a profile prepared subsquently tongue.gif)
- Fast Car zooming up the charts like a Fast Car and going 74-2- or something stupid.
- The 'fart in a lift' meme biggrin.gif
- Mine and Pete's contradicting opinions on Drake :,)

Posted by: Steve201 24th December 2016, 06:10 PM

Clearly this has been the year of Drake and Little Mix!

Posted by: Tinasha 24th December 2016, 06:22 PM

Fan or not, the release of Shout Out To Me Ex was easily one of the most surprising and impressive moments of the chart year. Everyone knew they'd become more popular but nobody predicted the heights of popularity they'd risen to. They were number 1 on iTunes with the biggest lead since Adele's Hello, went to 1 on Spotify in days and had the fastest sales of the year, managing a number 1 single with just 5 days.

Drake's 10+ weeks at number 1 was the other one.

Think Drake has the edge there to be honest... wink.gif Few of mine are...

'When The Bassline Drops' reaching the Top 10
Skepta's album success, also the likes of Kano and Giggs too
'Panda' breaking through to become huge
Sean Paul's comeback
The prevalence of dancehall
'One Dance' obviously
M.O. getting a chart hit
'You Want Me' progressing from fresher's anthem to chart hit!

Posted by: Dobbo 24th December 2016, 06:45 PM

Disturbed definitely, nothing like that in the top 40 for years.

Also In Ibiza's first week at #1 stood out to me as a surprise, especially in that week when I thought 7 Years was still miles ahead.

It was impressive but it didn't surprise me with SOTME being s catchy comeback on top of their biggest hit of their career in Black Magic, they really are at the peak of their chart career just now!

Posted by: Danta Claus 24th December 2016, 09:02 PM

SOTME making #1 on less than a week's sales was a great moment too mostly because it kicked James Arthur off #1 ph34r.gif never would've expected that.

and falling to #5 in the process! what a way to end a 15 week run.

Posted by: Brian Quinn 24th December 2016, 10:07 PM

Elvis' 'The Wonder Of You' is the highlight for me. His 13th No.1 Album and still in the Top 5 after nine weeks without entering the Top 100 Streaming Charts.

Posted by: Tinsel Boy 24th December 2016, 10:19 PM

The only thing I can think of is Pink's brief return. This year has been mostly shit.

The albums chart has seemed more interesting.

Posted by: Steve201 24th December 2016, 10:20 PM

When did Pink return?

Posted by: RobBob 25th December 2016, 01:09 AM

Just Like Fire.

Posted by: Steve201 25th December 2016, 01:16 AM

That's right, I had forgotten about it!

Posted by: SKOB 25th December 2016, 08:59 AM

I think everyone else had too tongue.gif

Not exactly her signature hit

Posted by: SantaMixer 25th December 2016, 06:18 PM

Little Mix going to #1 with 'Shout Out To My Ex' and 'Glory Days'! wub.gif

Drake hogging the #1 position for 15 weeks was ridiculous. I actually stopped listening to charts for months because of his dominance. sleep.gif

I don't listen to the chart anymore because of that (well, that and the fact that I get back from high school at 6:20pm, instead of 4:40pm at the latest previously when I was in middle school, but I could still liste n to the 20 last minutes and I don't).

Posted by: Jack 25th December 2016, 06:35 PM

There was literally none lmao. I can't think of a single one.

Posted by: SKOB 25th December 2016, 06:48 PM

The deaths of Prince and David Bowie sad.gif Especially Bowie as it lead to big sales for him

Posted by: Steve201 26th December 2016, 01:51 AM

That's true and now add George Michael to that sad.gif
