BuzzJack Music Forum _ Personal Charts _ Jupiter 2017: Week #24

Posted by: 360Jupiter Jun 13 2017, 09:17 AM

Change of hands at the top as Martin Garrix snatches a second consecutive #1, becoming the second track ever to debut at the top of the tree. There For You also gives Troye Sivan a debut #1 hit. Last week’s topper Sway slips to #2. Carly Rae Jepsen and Little Mix’s Power are also strong new entries into the top 10, while Lana Del Rey’s Lust For Life experiences a reversal of fortunes in its third charting week from being Lana’s lowest-charting single this era, zooming past Love and Coachella’s #4 peaks to become her highest-peaking track so far at #3. While it’s still not what I look for or like in a Lana Del Rey song, it’s still a pretty awesome track, and the video also boosted it in my estimation.

Lana’s Coachella also remains in the top 5, giving her 2/5 this week. This seems impressive now, but come her album release in July it may not be a rare occurance; I’m a huge Lana fan.

A couple strong rises in the top 20 this week; Iggy Azalea, Kehlani, HAIM (twice) and Mila J rise to new peaks. New entries-wise this week, as well as the aforementioned, new tunes make it in from Yo Gotti and Nicki Minaj, Mura Masa and Charli XCX, Foster the People, Paperwhite, MisterWives, Yes Lad, Camila Cabello, Arcade Fire, Charming Horses, and Britney Spears and Green Day from their 2016 albums. Quite a few this week! More the merrier though.

I’ll be adding video links and a bit of commentary for the new entries through the week, so check back for that, I’ll update the thread title accordingly.

Quite a few interesting new entries this week, and I've decided to switch it up a bit by starting at the bottom with this week's links. EDM replaces EDM at the top spot with Garrix's more uptempo euphoric house tune replacing the more restrained charm of Syn Cole's Sway after a two-week reign. In doing so he charts a 4th week at the top this year, now only behind previous collaborator Dua Lipa who's been #1 for 6 weeks this year across three tunes. A barrage of new entries shakes out some long-runners once again this week, leaving Katy Perry's #2-peaking Bon Appetit as this week's longest runner, notching up a 6th week in the top 40 in her first outside of the top 20. Bon Appetit might see itself hanging on for another week as its plays have stablized nicely over this last week.

As for the new entries:

Camila Cabello's solo solo debut. It is, as some have pointed out before, very much a modern Sia song that Cabello hasn't changed that much, but it is a safe bet for a lassie just starting out. It's an okay song. I'm not super mad on it, but it's alright. Debuts as this week's #38.

A nice cover from Charming Horses that gives Grace Grundy her first chart entry. It's just about 20 years since the original by New Radicals - a classic 90s radio song - came out. Feel old yet?

I've been revisiting Britney's latest album after seeing a few youtube reaction/review videos for it. At the time lead single Make Me held my attention for pretty much all of the campaign, and also bonus track Mood Ring which was briefly available everywhere before for whatever reason Britney's people decided to wipe it out of existence. Part of me's hoping they're saving it for a future release, it's a pretty solid song. There's a few album tracks that should be charting this year, as Britney albums go, Glory is up there with her more solid efforts, with good modern production and Britney sounding the most healthy she has for a few years. At least in studio version, anyway. Unfortunately only been able to find a pitched link on youtube.

Great return from Arcade Fire in advance of their new album coming out this summer. They're a band I'm generally hot and cold on; this is definitely one of their more instant lead singles. I haven't listened to them that much since 2013 or so, but I'm eager to see what they come out with this time around - so far the new album seems similar to Elbow's last effort, minus the restrained Britishness.

This is glorious. Paperwhite have charted before but at the time I thought they'd be a one hit wonder band, but I like this even more than their last song. Almost a shade of CHVRCHES to this in terms of the euphoric production and energy running through it.

So I only recently found out this is a semi-manufactured XF band after playing this song for a while. I don't watch X Factor auditions really so I had no clue. It's a pretty typical modern boyband pop/off-pop track, something you'd not be surprised to hear on a typical radio station. It's the band's first charter for me and I think their first release total.

A second charter from Green Day's most recent album, just squeaking in this week. A good classic radio rock song that takes me right back to '04-05. Apparently it was a single too, who knew? I tend to just go through albums until I find a track I like and that's what I end up playing - clearly the record label had good taste :3

Second charter this year for Foster the People from their three-track EP that previews their upcoming third studio album. I'm stoked for it, unlike a lot of people I thought their second album was three steps up from their debut, and I'm intrigued to say what direction this one will take. Having said that, the tracks so far out have a pretty similar sound to album #2, so I'm not holding out for a dramatic repositioning or evolution right now. Previous charter Pay the Man reached #17, only time will tell if this one can match or surpass it.

Part II of links to come when I get the time!

Hiya Jup tongue.gif Here are my chart favourites for this week:

23 Felix Jaehn ft. Alex Aiono + Hight - Hot2Touch [19-22-23]
25 Yo Gotti ft. Nicki Minaj - Rake it Up [N] Not heard this, is it about leaves? tongue.gif
34 Yes Lad - Walk Away [N] not heard this but I do like boybands so I'll check it out
35 Britney Spears - Just Luv Me [N]

Part II:

Carly Rae is a goddess. Never in my wildest dreams would I have thought in 2012 five years on I'd be listening to and loving her pure pop music, as I hated Call Me Maybe with a passion. How tastes can change. Although I'm still not mad on that one. Carly is a damn good songwriter though, and really hits the right emotional notes in her music. Great style, too. And she's very cute <3

Charli XCX continues her resurgence in my estimations with this one giving her a 5th top 20 track since December (following Pull Up, Babygirl, After the Afterparty and Love Gang with Whethan). She's another artist I initially couldn't stand - although some of that was due to how heavily lastfm promoted her, back when it was mainly an online radio service with a limited number of skips. 1 Night also sees Mura Masa change in direction to a more pop crossover sound from the chillier fare he was releasing back in 2014-15 with the likes of Shura. Only time will tell how the album is.

Second charter now from Haim 2.0, giving them 2 for 2. It's very much a return to their old sound, but it's a cute and smooth song good for driving around in the summer. Hope it gets radio support at some point, it would slot nicely onto Radio 2 or 6 Music.

New track by Yo Gotti who I don't know so well, and Nicki Minaj who I do know pretty well. Minaj, as on many songs she appears, makes this song with a solid verse and some inventive wordplay rhymes. It is, as of now, Minaj's latest single, but she'll probably drop something else within a few weeks. Mike WiLL Made-It produces this one; it lifts from a collaborative Mike Will/Yo Gotti mixtape released this month.

A slightly unknown one for me here, although I've seen MisterWives before on a few people's charts. A bit of research tells me they're a pop band ensemble of 6, active 3-4 years now, who've released 2 albums. This is actually their most recent single, rather than a random album track. They've worked before with Twenty One Pilots, Bleachers, and Panic! at the Disco, and class themselves between indie and alternative dance.

I love this. The video is everything. I would love to see this break the US for them. There's a nice nod to Pride with the queens featured and the intersectionality of the video, all kinds of people coming together to party and celebrate themselves and each other. This is definitely up there with my favourite Little Mix songs now.

Finally, closing with this week's topper. I've said a lot about this one in its own thread before, but still, wow, what a good song. Maybe not quite as solid or powerful as Scared to Be Lonely, but still a solid 8-9/10 for this one. It's great to see Troye Sivan getting a high profile feature and platform to grow his own career; what is it with all my favourite singers moving into dance features this year? And as for the video, as I've said before...very carefully crafted and a bit of a tease for anyone who might want to ship Garrix/Sivan. There's shippers out there I'm sure.

Ty all for reading and commenting, anyone else with thoughts, of course feel free to chime in biggrin.gif
