Robbie Williams leads British invasion in Las Vegas music scene

Maybe only cold cocking fans of the opposing “football” squad is bigger over there.

It’s hard to overstate just how massive Robbie Williams is in his native England.

He’s the top -selling British solo artist of all time, with 10 No. 1 albums and seven chart-topping singles.

And his success is far from confined to his homeland: Williams is also the top-selling non-Latino artist in Latin America, has sold more than 75 million albums worldwide and, in 2006, made it into the Guinness World Records for selling 1.6 million tickets in a day.

In other words, like Ron Burgundy with a neck tattoo, he’s kind of a big deal.

So it’s an even bigger deal that Williams is launching his first residency in Las Vegas at the Encore Theater at Wynn Las Vegas. Williams has 15 shows scheduled there, from March 6 through July 6.

It will be interesting to see how they review his set once he starts.

Will he be too "British"?

Or just brilliant? wub.gif

Press conference from LV. It's pixalated but the audio is good.

Really strange to hear his career having to be "explained". laugh.gif

Robbie Williams is already a big … deal at Wynn Las Vegas

Robbie Williams explained his box-office popularity in characteristically unambiguous fashion Tuesday afternoon.

“I’m a big (expletive) deal,” the British pop star said during a news conference at Wynn Las Vegas’s Lakeside Restaurant.

That would have served as apt title for Williams’ series at Encore Theater (except for the expletive), but as it is he’s going with “Live In Las Vegas.” This is really the Robbie Williams Show, opening Wednesday night, and he’s already sparked intrigue in the Vegas entertainment scene with his swift ticket sales.

Remarkably, all of Williams’ shows this month and those in June and July are listed as sold out.

Asked to further elaborate on his popularity before even playing one show on the Strip, Williams said, “Yeah, it’s an ego stroke. It feels good. But I’m an entertainer. Not a lot of people are specifically doing what I do, singing and telling jokes, pandering to the audience — people see it and want to see it again.”

Williams quite clearly a Rat Pack devotee — he seems to have borrowed his hip vernacular and swagger from his idol, Dean Martin. He has performed “My Way” in his touring show, and recorded “Something Stupid,” the Frank and Nancy Sinatra duet, with Nicole Kidman. That song, too has been Williams’ live show.

In November, Williams noted that, “My vision is to bring everything I’ve learned over the last 30 years of my performing career and be a regular feature in Las Vegas.” But he’s not yet ready to commit past his original run through July, regardless of his advance sales.

“I hope it can go further, but we haven’t done the first show yet,” he said. “I don’t know how it’s going to feel onstage, how the audience is going to react, or how I can meet my own expectations, which are incredibly high.”

He did a dress rehearsal for fans that finished a few hours ago (because of time difference).

It all seems to have gone brilliantly. Lots of positive reviews on the website. Very intimate theatre. Lots of covers. Only a few RW originals but I guess that's what he meant that he will see how it goes. No one's allowed to share teasers.

He's calling himself "Stoke's answer to Liberace". rotf.gif
