YoungR ascends to the top spot, making it a (rare for BuzzJack!) two male acts in a row to lead my charts. He's only the second guy at the top since I started these charts in July (we're not counting G-Eazy's feature on Make Me). Tinashe's out-of-character SuperLove nevertheless rises to my #2 and Gaga hits #3, while Sia storms into the top 5 for the first time since Elastic Heart. More detail on moves and new entries in the next post; for now, here's the top 40 in full up to the end of September:
01 Youngr - Out of My System [16-5-1] 02 Tinashe - SuperLove [3-3-2] 03 Lady Gaga - Perfect Illusion [17-4-3] 04 Drumsound + Bassline Smith ft. Conor Maynard - Catch Me Here [14-12-4] 05 Sia ft. Kendrick Lamar - The Greatest [22-5] 06 Empire of the Sun - High and Low [28-10-2-1-6] 07 Everything Everything - I Believe It Now [37-7] 08 Brooke Candy - Changes [32-9-8] 09 AlunaGeorge - Mediator [39-15-9] 10 Fred Falke - It's A Memory [15-21-10] 11 Bear's Den - Red Earth & Pouring Rain [35-X2-38-12-7-11] 12 Holychild ft. Highest riser this week that’s not previously linked comes from the comeback of Drumsound and Bassline Smith now partnering with the…hm, I can’t think of an adjective to describe Conor Maynard. Maynard has had an up and down career, from a strong start in mainstream pop to seeming to migrate to YouTube in recent years and pick up a viral following. This track sees his pure pop vocals shift into a more modern Justin-Bieber style than the teen pop/mainstream pop he’s previously preferred. This isn’t the best song in the world but it’s inoffensive and catchy, and so this week reaches its peak of #4. Holychild are a duo on the rise who first came to my attention through NoiseTrade in early 2014. They’ve since worked with Kate Nash in the past and here appear with RAC in a funky overstyled video rocking a retro 80s-style sound. Power Play debuts this week at #12. Carly Rae goes from strength to strength with new release Emotion Side B, building on her critical (/somewhat commercial) and fandom reinvention from earlier last year. For someone who got her start essentially as a real-life Robin Sparkles, the critical success and adoration her music inspires nearly ten years later as a nouveau-mature-ingenue artiste is astounding. Higher is her second chart entry from the aforementioned new album and charts this week at #13. Swedish Maria Hazell debuts this week at #14. It’s actually her second chart hit for me following Golden Boy, a track which recalls Chase and Status’s flagship 2011 hit Blind Faith. This one’s a little different, instead echoing a bit of Taylor Swift, I'd say more Tori Kelly than Zara Larsson, while she rocks a Jess Glynne circa 2014 hairstyle. I’m a fan though. Alice Jemima makes her solo chart debut this week after previously charting for me featured on Sleepwalk by Mogli the Iceburg from earlier this year. From what folk have been saying I’m gathering this was tipped to do well by forum members earlier on in the year; I must have missed the memo. Alice Jemima is a British new riser, aiming to put out an album in 2017, and currently touring the UK in support of her current and upcoming music. Dodged a Bullet for me this week lands at #15. And now for a group Spotify has a page for but LastFM insists doesn’t exist. It's got a video so they must be doing something right! I’m liking this one. It enters at #16 this week. Finally for this week, it's viral hit time – and from what I hear, a prior success from BJESC – something that happened before I came on the scene, I gather. This – along with Carpet, a second FRENSHIP track – got some airplay and playlisting earlier in the year from me. As I hear this more about, it’s come back to my attention. Emily Warren on the vocals is charming, and contributes a lot to Capsize’s re-entry this week at #33. It's also just released an actual video so must be on the up! As always, questions and comments (even about this being ridiculously behind) are welcome. Til next (or later this) week! This post has been edited by 360Jupiter: 6th October 2016, 10:31 AM |
