Posted by: SevenSeize Feb 27 2021, 07:33 PM

Olivia Rodrigo's run at #1 could extent to 8 weeks on the singles chart, while Joel Corry's new single BED with RAYE & David Guetta is expected to debut high. There's also new tracks from Pop Smoke, Post Malone, Wolf Alice, Maisie Peters and Steps/Michelle Visage

On the album chart, Digga D's mixtape Made In The Pyrex could enter at #1, while Architects are set for their highest chart placing yet with ninth album For Those That Wish to Exist. Albums from Lucy Spraggan, Maximo Park and Alice Cooper may debut in the top 10, plus there's new releases from Madison Beer, Nick Cave/Warren Ellis, Julien Baker, King Gizzard, Epica and Roosevelt

Breakdown of the week
- Saturday: Some information may be posted on social media but it is likely to be missing most streaming data and is unrepresentative.
- Sunday: Official First Look Chart on Radio 1 from 6-7pm. Please do not post spoilers on the forum in advance as this ruins the countdown for any listeners.
- Monday: OCC Top 100 from 5:45pm
- Tuesday: Top 40 update as and when we receive them with requests, this is NOT 100% guaranteed however. The OCC may publish sales flashes of their own accord but likewise, this is not guaranteed. Twitter and social media is your friend for today. Please post any information you find with a source. Do not nag for updates, we will post a top 40 update if we receive one.
- Wednesday: Top 40 update from Music Week from 5:45, and potential top 5 sales but this is not guaranteed.
- Thursday: See Tuesday.

Other notes (please read)
- You may make requests Tuesday to Thursday but outside the top 40, specific positions will not be revealed (unless deemed necessary by a mod).
- Please do not demand a midweek update, one will be posted as and when we receive the information. Patience is a virtue.
- Sales information will be given out as deemed necessary by a moderator, please bear this in mind when making requests. Most requests for sales will be ignored. Any chart requests between No. 41 to 100 will not be answered after Monday's update.
- To keep everyone in the loop of all chart action, please refer to the iTunes and Spotify threads.

Should be an interesting week

Please stop posting repetitive posts on certain artists day in and day out wishing the #1 would just go away, once is enough you don't need to go on about it every week, guests and members don't want to read them.

Thank you chart moderators for including this now.

Hope Olivia gets an 8th week at no.1 - nothing else in the top 10 is anything close to it in terms of quality. Plus it’s almost guaranteed a 7th week on top of the US Billboard chart (confirmed early next week) . There hasn’t been a no.1 to manage topping both U.K. and US charts at the same time for that long since Ed Sheeran in 2017 when ‘Shape of you’ topped both charts at the same time for 10 non consecutive weeks. Doubt she’ll beat that but we’ll see.

Posted by: LiamSime Feb 27 2021, 11:58 PM

Curious to see where Joel Corry’s new song will end up. I reckon it could debut in the top 10 and slowly creep to number 1 over the coming weeks, certainly hope so anyways. Don’t mind Olivia staying at number 1 in the meantime though as I love the song

Posted by: Bjork Feb 28 2021, 01:07 PM

same, think Architects have a chance to beat Digga D, as he's not doing as well as expected on streaming

not much going on in singles, Joel Corry also starting slower than I thought

Old days brought cd single count 1 sales

Now days can listen same song each week keep add to sales

That why like old format

Posted by: dandy* Feb 28 2021, 03:02 PM

I too prefer the old sales format - but I guess it just doesn't work these days. Times change and the system needs to change along with it.

I see it as two very distinct eras, I don't ever compare sales from pre-streaming to those that people achieve these days. They're basically two completely different sets of rules and I treat them as such.

Posted by: Dircadirca Feb 28 2021, 05:41 PM

There's a nice underrated benefit to the system in theory though, you get to put more weight into the stuff you like more -> listen to more, instead of reading your music consumption as a hard 1 sale equally for your favourite & most middling purchases. Same principle why basically every voting game on this site has ranked points rather than just counting the number of voters per entry. I think it's profoundly interesting* to see what inspires people to continue listening to week in week out, as opposed to a fleeting few weeks interest.

*granted the content & progression of it is usually anything but

British DJ Riton, Nightcrawlers and social media stars Mufasa and Hypeman continue their unbroken ascent on tonight’s Official Chart First Look. The uplifting house production samples Nightcrawlers’ Push The Feeling On, which became a viral dance craze on TikTok during Covid before entering the Official Singles chart Top 100 seven weeks ago. A steady journey northbound saw it enter the Top 10 two weeks ago, peaking at Number 7 on Friday.

Up a further four places over the weekend, Friday is now poised to enter the Top 5 for the first time this week, currently riding at Number 3 after 48 hours.

Meanwhile, reigning Number 1 Olivia Rodrigo looks set to hold on to her chart crown for an eighth week straight with Drivers License.

Elsewhere, TikTok star Nathan Evans climbs one place midweek with viral sea shanty Wellerman (2), with 220Kid and Billen Ted on remix duties.

Big climbs for ATB, Topic and A7S’s Your Love (9pm), up four places to Number 11 midweek, and Ava Max’s My Head & My Heart, up eight spots to 17.

The highest new midweek entry comes courtesy of West London rapper Digga D with Bluuwuu (19), closely trailed by Joel Corry’s self-proclaimed “baby-making banger” BED (20).

I absolutely don’t get Drivers License either - clearly it deserves its long number one run but I’ll be happy when it finally departs.

although I don’t particularly like the prospect of Wellerman going number one either so hopefully something else comes along soon.

Which is due to go to acr first? Could Wellerman fluke a week or 2 at number 1 if Drivers License goes to acr before it

Posted by: Sour Candy Feb 28 2021, 07:12 PM

The first week DL is on ACR (unless there will be remix next week) is the week starting 12th of March. Bieber will probably release his next single then as the album is out on 19th.

Posted by: Smint Feb 28 2021, 07:16 PM

Olivia better get on that phone to Drake or Cardi and work on that remix. Tbh if it was the USA charts that had the UK rules of ACR from week 10 she probably would to extend her no.1

Bieber's rumoured to be releasing a new single on 5th March (and he's not come close to a #1 debut for ages so I wouldn't be expecting him to contend anyway)

This is what I was thinking as well, as long as 'Wellerman' remains the closest competition and providing there is no remix trick or similar then it could finally reach #1 when 'Drivers License' gets hit by ACR.

Although as much as it's my favourite track in the Top 10 atm, I would actually prefer something new (ideally not from one of the usual suspects) to ride straight to #1. I would have backed 'Calling My Phone' if I didn't find it so dull and forgettable.

Posted by: Bré Feb 28 2021, 07:42 PM

I'd be here for 'Wellerman' fluking a #1, just please don't let 'Friday' do that, would be the worst non-charity #1 for quite a while.

Would not mind if Olivia just manages to swerve ACR and hang on a bit longer if there's nothing coming to legitimately beat her in the next few weeks though xx

Maybe but 'Anyone' only opened with 21,327. I imagine this next single will have higher opening sales as the overall singles market was really down when 'Anyone' was released, but maybe not enough for #1.

Edit: 'Holy' also only debuted with 27,148.

Posted by: Sour Candy Feb 28 2021, 08:30 PM

Oh really thought Anyone did better than that, it peaked at #4 after all.

Wellerman is a lazy novelty song IMO, unpopular opinion I know - I hope it doesn’t get to #1

Posted by: Bré Feb 28 2021, 11:33 PM

It is literally just a cover of a sea shanty, it wasn't created with the intent of being a hit single, just a bit of fun on TikTok. (Unless you mean the remix of it is lazy in which case fair)

It's a return to their more pop-orientated sounds, and has had their best reviews since their debut from what I can see - I'd recommend checking out the singles at least and see what you think!

I will do, to be honest they went quiet for a long time, really thought they all moved on.

Would love for Maximo Park to hang on, but that top 5 is a bloodbath for the #1, I can see Lucy falling away.

Maxïmo Park outselling Architects in the midweeks is certainly unexpected! 'Our Velocity' is one of my favourite 00s indie tracks and I enjoyed a few of their other early singles too, can't say I've been too taken by their more recent output.

With such a small sales gap between the current top 5 I expect Digga D will end up rising to #1, unless one of the non new releases is also still within striking distance.

I have no idea why ElyOtto isn't in the top 100 at all when he's significantly higher on streaming than he was this time last week?

ElyOtto is in the top 100 update today btw

Posted by: WhoOdyssey Mar 2 2021, 05:44 PM

Good sales for Maximo, they've been pushing all day today (as opposed to the hours after the update yesterday) - so I wouldn't be too surprised to see them still at #1

Posted by: Glenn 69 Mar 2 2021, 05:46 PM

Does Rag N Bone Man have any chance of holding up given the complete lack of streams?

Digga D should easily overtake Alice Cooper by tomorrow then, although I reckon it'll go down to the wire for the #1.

Interestingly, Maximo Park's third album in 2009 was #1 in the midweeks before falling to #6

Posted by: Bjork Mar 2 2021, 06:21 PM

^don't think anybody thought they had a chance even if they were #1 in the Mids, it's just NME making the charts look more interesting
actually Green Day ended up at #1 with nearly 80K and Maximo Park did 19K, but that was a massive drop cos their previous album had opened with 39K

Posted by: Feel_The_Fever Mar 2 2021, 08:29 PM

Apart from Digga D i see the rest of the top 5 struggling to stay top 75 next week and possibly the same for the White Stripes and Neil Young. I thought BED would be easily top 20 by now.

Posted by: Dot Branning Mar 2 2021, 08:41 PM

Repeat listens and I still think 'BED' is nothing special, it's not bad but feels very by the numbers to me. The new version of 9PM has actually grown on me though, wouldn't mind if that climbed to the Top 10.

Hoping that Joel can climb into the top 20 and that ATB can climb into the top 10 on Friday

Posted by: JosephStyles Mar 2 2021, 11:02 PM

The gap between #10 and #11 is getting bigger so, at this rate, don't expect ATB to be top 10 (I'd say it's actually more likely to be #12 than #10)

Today Digga D has released tickets to Exclusive Shows on his website (each ticket comes with a free album CD)

Surely albums that are a free giveaway with something else won't qualify as official sales. Singles/albums have been disqualified for less in the past.

You are a legend

Posted by: Bjork Mar 3 2021, 02:27 PM

but actually it depends
if in order to buy the tix, you are forced to buy the album, then those bundles are not allowed
the occ is very clear about that in their rules
there always has to be the option that you can buy the tix without the album
and different prices for ticket alone and ticket+album

if they automatically add an album to a tix, then it's not allowed
so it depends...

check section 8.3 in here:

I can name a handful of artists that get a pass when it comes to ‘forcing’ albums with ticket sales.

I've been fine with the top ten for the last few weeks just because most of the long runners are songs I really like, but now there's definitely a queue of songs just behind that deserve to be top ten hits and I'd love to see The Weeknd and ATB make it soon!

Posted by: Bré Mar 4 2021, 08:05 PM

I thought ticket bundles didn't count towards the UK chart (they certainly never seemed to have the same ridiculous distortionary effect they did in the US). Maybe the rules are just slightly different here ~

I don't really care too much who gets the #1 between the current top 2, Architects would at least feel a bit more current/relevant I guess (and either one would be a first #1 after over a decade of releasing albums). Looks like Digga D will fall a bit short of even the 9-10k I was predicting for him, even for just being a mixtape this does seem like a little bit of an underperformance!

That in itself is something of an achievement, they must usually fall way further than that in week 2.

Posted by: Bré Mar 4 2021, 08:35 PM

It's a little :') when a #1 album maybe getting a second week in the top 40 is actually a pleasant surprise but I'm happy it hasn't actually collapsed out of the top 200 as I was fully expecting it to. Their last album in 2017 fell 6-61 in its second week, and it seems they have never had an album spend more than 3 weeks in the top 100. They managed 3 weeks with 1999's 'Come On Die Young', 2013's 'Les Revenants' soundtrack (which actually missed the top 40 but had 2 separate runs in the top 100) and 2014's 'Rave Tapes', all their other entries had only one or two weeks. Maybe this one could yet give them another album with 3 weeks in the top 100?

I think I am going to check out the album, the first 2 singles were pretty good and I'm even more impressed with the third single 'Pat Stains' which I only finally got around to listening to yesterday.

Posted by: steve201 Mar 4 2021, 10:15 PM

Maybe since sales are so low at the top end Mogwai naturally fall less but I guess that would have been the case with other second week albums.

Posted by: Liam.k. Mar 4 2021, 10:18 PM

Sales generally stay the same at other positions outside the top end, even if sales at that end are low.

There was a brief chat about this in http://www.buzzjack.com/forums/index.php?showtopic=235185&st=120, it would be on 41 weeks now (having dropped out for the last few months of 2020) which is still short of the 51 weeks Lewis Capaldi would have spent there with Someone You Loved!
