Blanche - City Lights

Posted by: Ryan. 22nd November 2016, 03:57 PM

There has been an exciting announcement in Belgium this afternoon as Walloon broadcaster RTBF announced their Eurovision act for 2017. The lucky artist is 16-year-old Ellie Delvaux, who will perform under her new alias Blanche. The song she will perform in Kyiv in next May’s Eurovision Song Contest is yet to be announced.

Song presentation on March 8th!

Posted by: LexC 7th March 2017, 07:49 PM

Song being revealed at 10:30 UK time tomorrow. Now I don't want to alarm you but the song is (apparently) NOT A BALLAD!

Posted by: ScottyEm 7th March 2017, 08:26 PM

Which means it'll be in my top ten - BY DEFAULT

Posted by: LexC 7th March 2017, 08:32 PM

This is the same part of Belgium that gave us Rhythm Inside so I wonder if it might end up being a Lorde adjacent type number again?

Posted by: Ryan. 7th March 2017, 08:43 PM

I'm imagining a moody electro midtempo, i'm convinced I'll like it!

Posted by: Ryan. 7th March 2017, 09:17 PM

This is called 'City Lights' (I love that title, simple but paints a vivid picture) and there is a teaser here: http://www.rtbf.be/auvio/detail_blanche-city-lights-extrait?id=2192344

... but it is geo-blocked! smile.gif

Posted by: Ryan. 7th March 2017, 09:23 PM

Very moody electronic mid-tempo it is! ohmy.gif

Posted by: Ryan. 7th March 2017, 09:31 PM

I WANT MORE! The clip is so promising it could be heading straight into my top 3 if the rest stays on that level, quite Lorde, quite Lana, very Blanche!

Posted by: LexC 7th March 2017, 09:38 PM

Ooh that sounds quite promising, looking forward to hear the full thing after my Seminar tomorrow.

Posted by: Jerick 7th March 2017, 09:40 PM

Can't wait to listen to the full version tomorrow!

Posted by: Cameron 7th March 2017, 09:41 PM

ooooh very different! I feel this is what Azerbaijan will go for too, style wise

IF YOU GOT A VK ACCOUNT TO LISTEN TO STATEMENTS WHEN IT WAS LEAKED IT HAS LEAKED https://vk.com/eurovision_main_group

Posted by: Ryan. 7th March 2017, 10:05 PM

Just came to post the same thing, Belgium 'doing an Austria' bless them. But I don't have a login!!!

Posted by: Ryan. 7th March 2017, 10:15 PM

Okay I've heard it, SENSATIONAL!

Her vocals stay at the same tone throughout the song but the song is so intricately produced, it is just fantastically done and still builds to a climax. So much effort has gone into this, it's possibly one of the most alternative things Eurovision will have had in recent years so it is hard to predict how it will do but if there's any justice Belgium will be having 3 top 10s in a row.

Posted by: Ryan. 7th March 2017, 10:23 PM

There's a bit of pitch editing at the end.

Posted by: J▲hq 7th March 2017, 10:31 PM

How did the country that sent "Mother" just three years ago, suddenly get so good??

(see also: Latvia)

Posted by: Cameron 7th March 2017, 10:34 PM

Belgium have killed it for a 3rd year in a row!!

Posted by: Ryan. 7th March 2017, 10:35 PM

2nd favourite to win on Betfair Exchange!

Posted by: Conderella 7th March 2017, 10:35 PM

With the exception of Copycat and Mother they have not exactly been bad recently.

Hopefully this is a grower because right now I am not impressed. Lacking a bit of an oomph at the moment

Wow. Belgium actually have an entry I don't hate against the consensus. It's rather good.

Not pour moi. This one unashamedly grew on me during the semis.

Posted by: Umi 7th March 2017, 10:47 PM

Damn this is good. BJSC winner good.

Posted by: Ryan. 7th March 2017, 10:48 PM

This is already guaranteed to be Bré and Jade's Eurovision favourite for 2017.

Posted by: ScottyEm 7th March 2017, 10:55 PM

Belgium on point AGAIN.

Posted by: LexC 7th March 2017, 10:58 PM

Brussels 2018!!1!11 (or Tel Aviv, I haven't decided yet (potentially Belgrade tho (ok who am I kidding it's going to be Turin isn't it)))

Posted by: Ryan. 7th March 2017, 10:59 PM

Yeah I can't see this winning just because it seems like a fairly impossible song to create a contest spectacle out of, but who knows RTBF may have something magical up their sleeves!

Posted by: Liаm 8th March 2017, 02:33 AM

Very impressed by this! I agree with the BJSC winner comparison actually laugh.gif It doesn't feel much like a Eurovision winner (I'm a bit iffy on how it will presented too, doesn't feel the sort of song that's easy to stage impressively, but we'll see) but I am optimistic that this will do well, it feels like a grower and has already grown in 3 listens compared to my initial listen. This could be one of my favourites of the year ohmy.gif

Posted by: AdamAloud 8th March 2017, 08:26 AM

It's extremely modern and very good, I just wish her voice wasn't so monotonous, especially towards the end. She'll need a great stage show a la Rhythm Inside otherwise I fear the televoters just won't get it.

Posted by: David 8th March 2017, 07:36 PM

Brilliant entry from Belgium. Can't believe they've pulled it out of the bag AGAIN. I can't quite see this winning, but it'll surely finish in the top five.

Posted by: *Tim 9th March 2017, 11:30 AM

I love how this song is blocked in my country. I must clarify, I am in Belgium atm 😂😂

Posted by: Liаm 9th March 2017, 04:21 PM

Ok this is bloody brilliant. It's approaching Anja to be my fave of the year <3 Until Wiktoria wins Melfest tomorrow of course.

Posted by: Mateja 10th March 2017, 02:26 AM

The song has a lot of promise and modern production, but I'm not sure it's going to work for Eurovision. Also, the vocals are just not doing it for me.

Brilliant!! In love after the first listen, plus Belgium for once would be an easy-as-hell destination to reach for next year's contest (Eurostar or cheap coach)!

Agreed that it might appeal to jury voters more than televoters, and Italy are a bit overly ahead of everyone in the odds to see anyone other than Francesco winning, but put a stunning live light show/performance in this and it would be an incredible (& deserved) shock win.

my winner

Posted by: NicM82 2nd April 2017, 11:01 PM

I really enjoy this one, I really like the fact that its modern and weird but not so weird that it becomes unpleasant. Her vocal is so unusual, particularly for an ESC entry. 'Rhythm Inside' has some elements in-common, it surprised you. Yes, you wonder what they will do with the staging, but Belgium have created two strong stages in a row now and there are lots of different technical options available - really, they have a blank canvas with this song and that could really be very freeing.

Please everybody, don't write Blanche off yet. Remember, we're in Kyiv this year, not Moscow, all because a woman wailed at the top of her lungs in a frankly weird trouser-suit, they used their lighting and LED cleverly and a digital tree spouted from the ground. It's about a moment, just the moment on the stage, merging a unique song we sit up and take note of and a strong visual. Create a moment and whether it wins or not, it holds up and we will remember it. A lot of people looking at Jamala's NF performance did not say "omg winner!" - hell, a lot of people still do not think "winner" when they see the completed entry in Stockholm. I don't know whether this is going to do well, it's far too early to tell, maybe there will be a backlash and a yearning for simplicity that gives Sweden its seventh win or victory for one of the more straightforward songs. Maybe that's not even the point, it's a Song Contest and this is one of the most interesting songs in the competition for me this year, at the very least we'll get something visually compelling to go along with the song, just like we got with Australia, Bulgaria, Armenia, Austria or Georgia last year.

Live performance on The Voice of Belgium. If I remember rightly, Loic performed on this just before he went to Vienna and the staging he had on The Voice turned out to be a very good indicator of what was to happen at Eurovision. Therefore I imagine Belgium will have staging something along these lines:

Quite LQ, but I think it works personally. Lots of people are underwhelmed, I think people expect all sorts of holograms and projections these days - and I wouldn't be surprised it we get some sort of white round object hologram in Kyiv as we have in the video.

I like the new higher vocals for the final chorus, and she is able to portray emotion through her eyes particularly at the end. Her backing vocalists/dancers seem to help her fill the stage too, definitely a good basis to work from in Kyiv!

Posted by: AdamAloud 19th April 2017, 02:36 PM

With every day I get more and more convinced this is going to miss the top 10.

Posted by: Ryan. 19th April 2017, 09:49 PM

Apparently those backing vocalists/dancers and "dance moves" will be in Kyiv but it will be different. Blanche will apparently have a special screen behind her on stage according to someone who translated an RTBF statement.

Still confident this is going top 10, I think it's more of a Bulgaria 2016 than a Croatia 2016 in terms of fan hypes. Initially loved, worry set in during the preview parties and initial staging videos, all turned out perfectly by the live shows and positively surprised in the results. I know Poli wasn't a bookies favourite but the rest applies.

this. the more hype and fan approval it gets the more i think it will crash out in 17th place in the final. it's too subtle

I don't suppose you could find the RTBF statement for me? I heard what you said about the performance was mistranslated but I've struggled to find the source material.

Posted by: Ryan. 20th April 2017, 02:49 PM

I've just relayed what I read on ESCForum, not sure if they included a link to where it came from or whether it was just a statement made on TV or Radio but I'll re-read it to see if there was anything.

Posted by: Ryan. 20th April 2017, 02:52 PM

It looks like there's two contrasting articles people have read, one where Blanche says the performance will be very similar to The Voice and another where RTBF say that the round object of light will be present. No-one is providing actual links though!

Posted by: Jonjo 11th May 2017, 11:08 AM

Just caught up with Semi 1, this is such a endearingly charming song! So subtle, raw and beautiful. She was 1000% the most nervous but it really added to the performance I think! Please surprise and smash!

Posted by: djgrafdemon 11th May 2017, 10:08 PM

Is she a favourite? Are you kidding?
Well, if you're looking for a crystal clear singer with human qualities and limitations showed off naturally, that's gonna satisfy you, I think.
If you don't wanna see the grown-up girl from Sigma/Birdy 'Find Me' video with Birdy's hoarse trembling voice, then try another country this year. So do I.
Sorry if anyone's been offended.

10 points, behind Portugal

Hey Mamma at #26 too :')

Blanche has a new single out, titled Wrong Turn.

It’s very good!
