Joseph's Hit 250: Year-End 2017

Click the banner above to visit my end-of-year countdown!

Chart Commentary

After a massive six weeks at #1, Rita Ora's Anywhere is dethroned by not one, but two tracks! Reigning supreme is Louis Tomlinson, who scores his third solo #1 single, to add to his 11 as a One Direction member. Combining the two, it would mean Louis now ties for the record of most #1 singles (a record One Direction used to hold) with The Vamps, who also have 14. It's Louis' fourth chart hit, with only promotional single Just Like You not making the top spot. His first hit was just under a year ago - Just Hold On, a collaboration with Steve Aoki, soared to #1 last December. Back to You, with Bebe Rexha and Digital Farm Animals, spent three weeks at #1 during the summer. Louis extends his lead on his fellow 1D members for the most #1s, two more than Harry, who only has Sign of the Times, while Liam, Niall and Zayn are still yet to top my chart in a solo capacity.

Also worth noting that Miss You is my 200th #1 single, quite apt for it to go to a member of One Direction!

Louis Tomlinson
2016 01 Just Hold On (Louis Tomlinson & Steve Aoki) | 1 | 1-2-4-6-11-14-22-29-34-37-X (10 weeks)
2017 01 Back to You (feat. Bebe Rexha & Digital Farm Animals) | 2 | 8-1-1-1-3-7-10-14-22-26-29-36-X (12 weeks)
2017 29 Just Like You | PS | 29-X (1 week)
2017 01 Miss You | 3 | 1-... (1+ weeks)

Louis performed Miss You on Saturday night's X Factor, and another special guest that night was Simon Cowell's new boyband PRETTYMUCH, who performed their new track No More. Only just missing out on the top spot, PRETTYMUCH nevertheless score their highest charting hit to date. No More goes higher than Open Arms, which peaked at #4 just last week and drops to #10 this week, and also outdoes debut hit Would You Mind (#5) and Teacher (#35). It features French Montana, who also scores his highest charting hit to date, and appears in the top 10 for the first time since his feature on Jennifer Lopez's I Luh Ya Papi in 2014! No More is French's third concurrent top 40 hit, and his sixth of the year so far.

PRETTYMUCH
2017 05 Would You Mind | 1 | 15-17-12-14-20-19-13-10-5-8-13-18-28-35-39-X (15 weeks)
2017 35 Teacher | 2 | 35-X (1 week)
2017 04 Open Arms | 3 | 12-12-8-6-4-10-... (6+ weeks)
2017 02 No More (feat. French Montana) | 4 | 2-... (1+ weeks)

French Montana
2014 34 Feelin' Myself (will.i.am feat. Miley Cyrus, Wiz Khalifa, French Montana & DJ Mustard) | FEAT | 40-X-37-34-X (3 non-consecutive weeks)
2014 10 I Luh Ya Papi (Jennifer Lopez feat. French Montana) | FEAT | 37-10-18-29-X (4 weeks)
2017 28 Unforgettable (feat. Swae Lee) | 2 | 28-33-X (2 weeks)
2017 19 Hurtin' Me (Stefflon Don & French Montana) | FEAT | 38-19-21-29-34-X (5 weeks)
2017 17 Tip Toe (Jason Derulo feat. French Montana) | FEAT | 17-20-23-29-... (4+ weeks)
2017 30 Dirty Sexy Money (David Guetta & Afrojack feat. Charli XCX & French Montana) | FEAT | 39-30-38-... (3+ weeks)
2017 02 No More (PRETTYMUCH feat. French Montana) | FEAT | 2-... (1+ weeks)

The third new entry in this week's top 10, comes from producer Jax Jones, who scores his third top 10 hit of the year. Breathe follows #8 hit You Don't Know Me, and the huge #2 hit Instruction, which missed out on #1 to George Ezra's Don't Matter Now, but nevertheless achieved better longevity. Ina Wroldsen provides vocals on Breathe, and as such, it becomes her second chart hit after contributing to Martin Solveig's #10 hit Places. Technically, she also has a #6 hit with Calvin Harris & Disciples on How Deep Is Your Love, but Ina was not given a credit on the track.

Jax Jones
2014 22 I Got U (Duke Dumont feat. Jax Jones) | FEAT | 22-34-X (2 weeks)
2017 08 You Don't Know Me (feat. RAYE) | NAS | 18-9-8-12-25-38-X (6 weeks)
2017 02 Instruction (feat. Demi Lovato & Stefflon Don) | NAS | 2-4-8-17-22-28-33-33-35-36-37-X-38-X (12 non-consecutive weeks)
2017 05 Breathe (feat. Ina Wroldsen) | NAS | 5-... (1+ weeks)

Ina Wroldsen
2017 10 Places (Martin Solveig feat. Ina Wroldsen) | FEAT | 31-40-X-10-15-22-37-X (6 non-consecutive weeks)
2017 05 Breathe (Jax Jones feat. Ina Wroldsen) | FEAT | 5-... (1+ weeks)

Interestingly, when Louis Tomlinson scored his first #1 hit, it was the same week as the release of 2016's X Factor winning single. Matt Terry's When Christmas Comes Around charted at #4, three places lower than Louisa Johnson's Forever Young the year before. Fast forward just under a year, and we have a new X Factor champion. Once again, the winning single debuts behind Louis Tomlinson, but doesn't quite debut so high. Nevertheless, Rak-Su make a strong debut, opening at #7 with Dimelo. It features Wyclef Jean, who scores his first hit (although Hips Don't Lie is one of my all-time favourites), and Naughty Boy, who scores a second top 10 hit, following Should've Been Me from last year, which made #6.

Rak-Su
2017 07 Dimelo (feat. Wyclef Jean & Naughty Boy) | 1 | 7-... (1+ weeks)

Wyclef Jean
2017 07 Dimelo (Rak-Su feat. Wyclef Jean & Naughty Boy) | FEAT | 7-... (1+ weeks)

Naughty Boy
2013 27 La La La (feat. Sam Smith) | 3 | 27-X (1 week)
2013 34 Lifted (feat. Emeli Sandé) | 4 | 34-X (1 week)
2016 06 Should've Been Me (feat. Kyla & Popcaan) | 2 | 6-16-22-33-X (4 weeks)
2017 07 Dimelo (Rak-Su feat. Wyclef Jean & Naughty Boy) | FEAT | 7-... (1+ weeks)

The X Factor - Winning Singles
2013 33 Skyscraper (Sam Bailey) | 10 | 40-33-X (2 weeks)
2015 01 Forever Young (Louisa Johnson) | 12 | 1-1-2-5-12-21-32-X (7 weeks)
2016 04 When Christmas Comes Around (Matt Terry) | 13 | 4-8-19-X (3 weeks)
2017 07 Dimelo (Rak-Su feat. Wyclef Jean & Naughty Boy) | 14 | 7-... (1+ weeks)

Elsewhere in this week's chart, Mariah Carey ascends another two places into the top 5, reaching that region for the third year in a row. It's joined by another Christmas hit this week, a more modern track from Tom Odell. Spending All My Christmas With You (Next Year) was released as the title track of an EP last year, and was recorded live from the Live Lounge. It peaked at #22 last year, and re-enters at #30 this week.

Joining Rak-Su and Wyclef Jean, there are plenty of debuts this week, from Steel Banglez, MoStack, Not3s, Lewis Capaldi and Tom Grennan.

Snap debut for Jax Jones!! Breathe is so good I can already tell it'll be one of my songs of 2018.

Is it bad that I kinda enjoyed the Prettymuch song on X factor even though it sounded completely mined? blush.gif Louis' song is awful tho.

ohmy.gif at Steel Banglez.

Great to see Rita got six weeks at number on each here.

Hey Sven, thanks very much for the comments!! biggrin.gif

I have two Christmas songs right now! Tom Odell is at #30 too heehee.gif I'm sure we'll see a few more enter but it'll generally be more modern songs as opposed to the classics - Mariah's an exception of course!

Thanks Dan!! Breathe really is a brilliant track, surely a big hit in early 2018??

I think the chorus of the PRETTYMUCH song was mimed but the verses were live, to my ears anyway! Embrace it tbh heehee.gif

I'm amazed at how much I'm enjoying the Steel Banglez track! ohmy.gif It's just so catchy!
