20TH: LANCE STROLL

1.5

QUOTE
stole a seat through nepotism alone - had that one wonder drive in baku a few years back but pretty much nothing else]

QUOTE
Some are born great, some have greatness thrust upon them. Others get daddy to buy the team. Out of his depth

QUOTE
Mr Stroll Sr is the reason he has the drive. Somehow has more podiums than Hulkenberg and Sainz Jr.

what severin said

Posted by: dobbo May 9 2019, 04:33 PM

A very unsurprising last place there. Had never seen that crash before - and I had never ever seen a crash at that particular corner before!

Posted by: Mack. May 9 2019, 04:39 PM

19TH:

PIERRE GASLY

3.75

QUOTE
having a bit of a nightmare at rbr so far, never been convinced yet aside from that one super drive in bahrain last year
QUOTE
Astonished he got the Red Bull drive and he's done nothing so far to suggest he'll keep it long

QUOTE
bit of a non-event
QUOTE
Looks a shadow of himself after joining Red Bull.

Posted by: Mack. May 9 2019, 04:50 PM

18TH:

DANILL KVYAT

4

QUOTE
good old torpedo, gets a bit of a bad rep but he's not a bad driver generally - people forget he beat ricciardo in the same machinery
QUOTE
has potential still

QUOTE
Guess who's back, Torpedo's back, back again pardon the Eminem pun.
QUOTE
Was he given another chance as a dare? The new Andrea De Cesaris

Posted by: jakewild May 9 2019, 04:55 PM

stroll last is well deserved

pierre is one of them people who i just know can do better than he's currently showing. got a feeling ocon might be challenging for his seat soon tho..

Posted by: Mack. May 9 2019, 05:02 PM

17TH:

ANTONIO GIOVINAZZI

4.5 (1 5s)

QUOTE
thoroughly unconvinced by this guy thus far, time will tell if he's the next sirotkin
QUOTE
on the fence. dunno what to think of him yet.

QUOTE
After his two crashes in China 2017. Yet to be convinced he is one of the future.
QUOTE
I really can't think of anything worth saying either way about him. But I like having an Italian back on the grid

Posted by: dobbo May 9 2019, 05:04 PM

Certainly wouldn't put Giovinazzi ahead of them 2...

Posted by: Mack. May 9 2019, 05:17 PM

16TH:

ROMAIN GROSJEAN

4.5 (1, 6s)

QUOTE
has never really kicked on from that very good season at lotus, keeps remininding everyone of the old grosjean too often
QUOTE
ditto ^

QUOTE
With him you get the good, the bad and the ugly in separate weekends.
QUOTE
Quick but a liability. If he can avoid crashing he can have his moments. Loses a point for rashness

Posted by: Mack. May 9 2019, 05:26 PM

15TH: ROBERT KUBICA

5 (1, 7s)

QUOTE
obviously hard to rate given the story behind his comeback but he is being outpaced by a rookie & will remain rooted to the foot on the standings
QUOTE
kinda wish he hadn't come back and left his legacy as it was. can't really see him challenging for a podium any time soon.

QUOTE
I'm not sure he should have come back, again like others have said he should have left his legacy as it was. Unfortunately it looks like he'll continue to be at the back throughout the season
QUOTE
Bonus point for being great once and especially for your resilience and determination to come back but all the signs are you shouldn't have bothered. Hopefully it was simply too early

Posted by: Mack. May 9 2019, 05:35 PM

13TH= SERGIO PEREZ

5 (7, 5, 6, 2)

QUOTE
solid, dependable & with the odd amazing drive to snatch a podium in inferior machinery
QUOTE
another non-event for me

QUOTE
Has his moments. But sometimes he is just average.
QUOTE
Has his moments. Most of them involve ramming or being rammed by Ocon. Less interesting by himself

Posted by: dobbo May 9 2019, 05:43 PM

Not following the numbers Mack? What's this mean:

5 (1, 7s)

Perez a bit too low there for my liking...

Just to clarify, Dobbo.

Robert Kubica had 1 7s, and 5s, compared to Perez who had 1 seven, 1 six and 1 five. Perez had higher of three scores compared to Kubica.

Posted by: PeteFromLeeds May 10 2019, 10:34 AM

Didn't rate in this as I didn't feel like I had enough knowledge to make an educated rate but I'm enjoying watching how the results pan out!

Posted by: Mack. May 10 2019, 10:56 AM

13TH= NICO HULKENBERG

5 (7, 6, 5, 2)

QUOTE
consistent if unremarkable - has more often than not punched above his weight despite the lack of podium
QUOTE
actually forget he's even on the grid sometimes

QUOTE
A career that reminds me of Nick Heidfeld
QUOTE
Solid driver. Can be relied on to score points but never to impress much

Posted by: Mack. May 10 2019, 11:19 AM

9TH= GEORGE RUSSELL

6 (7, 6, 6, 5)

QUOTE
difficult to rate as he's in an absolute pig of a car but he's doing all he can in beating his teammate convincingly
QUOTE
one to watch

QUOTE
Doing his best in the machinery he has got.
QUOTE
No idea if he's any good but he manages to drive around at the back pretty well

Posted by: Mack. May 10 2019, 11:26 AM

9TH= ALEXANDER ALBON

6 (7, 6, 6, 5)

QUOTE
like what's i've seen so far - didn't know much about him at the season start but already put in some good performances
QUOTE
same as dobbo

QUOTE
Ditto bonus point for drive at China. Has put up in some good performances so far
QUOTE
Bonus point for a good drive in China. Too soon otherwise

Posted by: Mack. May 10 2019, 03:10 PM

Now into the Top10:

Lewis Hamilton
Valtteri Bottas
Sebastian Vettel
Charles Leclerc
Max Verstappen
Daniel Ricciardo
Kevin Magnussen
Lando Norris
Carlos Sainz
Kimi Raikkonen

Posted by: Mack. May 10 2019, 03:20 PM

9TH= KEVIN MAGNUSSEN

6 (7, 6, 6, 5)

QUOTE
not afraid to get his elbows out, a decent midtable performer but never destined for a top drive
QUOTE
unremarkable

QUOTE
Nothing but best of the midfield.
QUOTE
Gutsy and not afraid to duke it out. Not race winner material without lots of luck

Posted by: Mack. May 10 2019, 03:30 PM

9TH= VALTTERI BOTTAS

6 (7, 6, 6, 5)

QUOTE
solid driver but you'd never back him in close wheel-to-wheel racing against similar peforming cars
QUOTE
great driver in a great car but he's so dull i barely know anything about him.

QUOTE
He's quick but not a championship contender
QUOTE
Solid number 2. The David Coulthard of his generation

Posted by: Mack. May 13 2019, 02:58 PM

8TH- CARLOS SAINZ

7 (9, 8, 6, 5)

QUOTE
a bit overrated for me, kinda there to make up the numbers these days skirting around average teams
QUOTE
i want him in a better team

QUOTE
Likable driver, above average. McLaren a wrong choice?
QUOTE
Decent. Likeable driver. Above average driver

Posted by: Mack. May 13 2019, 03:12 PM

7TH- LANDO NORRIS

7 (8, 7, 7, 6)

QUOTE
early days but that drive in bahrain was certainly an eye-catcher, potential to be a real class talent
QUOTE
looking forward to his story /what he can do

QUOTE
Early days, looks capable.
QUOTE
How do you give a rating for someone who's only started 3 races? Positive start so have a 6

Posted by: jakewild May 13 2019, 03:37 PM

actually quite surprised to see bottas 'only' at 9th..

lando is disappointing me a bit

Posted by: Severin May 13 2019, 10:49 PM

Norris being top 10 shows just how poor the grid is right now. Nothing against him but if drivers with years of experience and point scoring results are rated lower than a guy who has barely driven any races at all - let alone anywhere near the front... it's a damning indictment of the current crop.

And Bottas should be higher - he's much improved this year. Still pretty average but much improved

Posted by: dobbo May 14 2019, 11:38 AM

His 6th place in Bahrain inflated his score due to the recency factor.

Posted by: Mack. May 14 2019, 03:33 PM

6TH: SEBASTIAN VETTEL

7.25 (8. 7, 7, 7)

QUOTE
past his best now but still capable of the odd top drive - getting outperformed by a relative rookie once again though
QUOTE
a fav but time to retire soon no?

QUOTE
On his day, he's good but he is capable of another world title?
QUOTE
Like Hamilton is now, he used to be great when in front. Questionable under pressure. Overrated and past his best. Capable on his day. Legacy flattered by dominant cars.

Posted by: Severin May 14 2019, 03:40 PM

QUOTE(dobbo @ May 14 2019, 12:38 PM) *

I get that, but it's massively premature. And if people are getting excited over one decent race it reflects just how little excitement the others drivers raise

Posted by: Mack. May 14 2019, 03:46 PM

5TH: KIMI RAIKKONEN

8 (10, 8, 7, 7)

QUOTE
still got that amazing talent in him as seen by austin last year, great to see him stick around even if further down the grid
QUOTE
a legend

QUOTE
Still got talent, seems to be enjoying himself at the swansong of his career.
QUOTE
Many years ago this might have been a 10. With his legacy it would be a 10. His personality would be an 11. But sadly his brilliance has faded recently.

Posted by: Mack. May 14 2019, 04:05 PM

4TH: DANIEL RICCIARDO

8.75 (10, 9, 8, 8)

QUOTE
going through a rough patch right now & won't be challenging for podiums again soon but the talent is unmaskable
QUOTE
needs a better car and team immediately. a wasted talent alongside ocon

QUOTE
When he has a quick car, he is capable of getting wins. I hope it will all come to fruition at Renault sometime soon in the next couple of years.
QUOTE
One of the best out there. Feels like Red Bull favoured quickly Verstappen and that cost him despite his clear talent. Needs a swift move away from Renault to revive career

Posted by: Mack. May 14 2019, 04:20 PM

3RD: MAX VERSTAPPEN

9.25 (10, 9, 9, 9)

QUOTE
driver who you get excited for in close combat, far less error-prone & overperforming in an average car
QUOTE
one of the few current drivers that truly excites me. you can always rely on him going to gold even when it looks out of the question. like severin said tho, too many errors. but they get far outweighed by his sheer courage to just push the limits.

QUOTE
Quick but still makes that mistake at a crucial time. World Champion? I'm not sure he will be.
QUOTE
The most exciting driver out there and were he in a Mercedes he'd be a tough challenge for Hamilton. Too many errors still

Posted by: Mack. May 15 2019, 01:18 PM

2ND: CHARLES LECLERC

9.5 (10, 10, 10, 8)

QUOTE
not seen anything yet to suggest this guy ain't the real deal, surely set for dizzying heights once ferrari stop sabotaging him
QUOTE
one of the best first seasons i know of so far at least..? a rookie making it all look so easy. can't wait to see his progression and inevitable championship win next yr / 2021 / when lewis retires

QUOTE
One of my favourite drivers. I'm sure a first win isn't far away. A future World Champion.
QUOTE
Still too early to say but has real potential and a natural talent. Can currently be found destroying Vettel's reputation

Posted by: Mack. May 15 2019, 01:34 PM

And the winner is.......

1ST: LEWIS HAMILTON

9.5 (11, 11, 11, 5) [By vitue of a higher number compared to Leclerc's]

QUOTE
best car best car yada yada (not even the case sometimes) he is the don of the grid, untouchable at his best
QUOTE
love to hate him. questionable actions off the grid but in the car he's untouchable.

QUOTE
Not a fan of him. But he can be untouchable when he has the quickest car
QUOTE
Best at qualifying and once in front. Questionable under pressure. Just makes top 20 all time despite 5 titles - Beaten by Button/Rosberg in equal cars weakens his claims as the best

So your winner is Lewis Hamilton.

I wish to thank everyone who contributed to this rate. I hope you have enjoyed the countdown so much as I have.

Look out soon in July time, for another rate where we will have our Buzzjack's Best Grand Prix where you will nominate your favourite Grand Prix's. It will be some task. But I hope you can join me in that. Many thanks. smile.gif

Posted by: jakewild May 15 2019, 01:35 PM

can't really argue with that top 5. solid start for leclerc and a future championship winner i'm sure.

i really want 2014 ricciardo back. or at least 2019 ricciardo in a better car. i'd love to see how he'd fare in a merc or ferrari but i guess that could be said for everyone.. (i'd love to see a one off race like the new w series where they all have the same car and it's all just down to skill and strategy)

deserved win for hamilton. say what you want about him (and i definitely will) but he really is one of the greatest.

Posted by: jakewild May 15 2019, 01:37 PM

and thanks a lot for hosting this mack. great job, really enjoyed it. looking forward to the best grand prix rate!

Posted by: Mack. May 15 2019, 01:43 PM

Yes, there won't be a driver like Lewis Hamilton, I don't think in the next fifteen years or so. Never did I see anyone getting near the records of Schumacher or the most pole positions that record may never been broken.

Posted by: dobbo May 15 2019, 06:01 PM

Hamilton only a 5? Are we watching the same sport or? Also there's no shame in being beaten by Button happy.gif (and everyone knows the Rosberg title was ridiculous luck)

I do wonder if my rating for Leclerc was a little premature too but I've no doubt right now he's a better driver than Vettel who's a 4-time champion so...

Probably the correct top 2 & not too much else I'd change overall.

Thanks for running this Mack, hopefully we get a little more participation for the next event!

Posted by: Severin May 15 2019, 09:12 PM

Lewis is of course a worthy winner but I'll still argue there's no real competition for him right now. With 2013 marking the last time any other top driver could actually compete on an almost level field car-wise, and the grid containing so few genuine talents for years now, his record will always flatter to deceive

Well done for hosting this though. I have thoroughly enjoyed it and really look forward to best GP thing

Hamilton is no stranger to lucky wins either

Of course but by the same token he could be on 8 titles by now! As well as the aforementioned 2016 he was extremely close to winning in his debut season and could have sneaked it in 2010 as well (I recall him being taken out by webber at Singapore that year which massively dented his hopes).

Obviously he has the best car but didn't Schumacher for all those years at Ferrari too? Senna at McLaren, prost at Williams etc. etc.I always consider Fangio the GOAT myself, 4 consecutive titles in 4 different cars in the 50s era, that is the stuff of legends.

No argument with Fangio.

Senna def had best car in 1988/9 but he also had to deal with Prost, Piquet, Mansell, Berger. Even lesser drivers like Brundle, Alesi, Arnoux came with great reputations. Didn't have the best car after that though.

Prost only won 2 of his titles in a clear cut best car and the same Mansell, Senna, Lauda, Piquet point stands

Schumacher's Benetton was the best car in 1994 for certain but the Ferrari of '96 - '00 were not better than the McLaren or williams cars . By '01 to '04 they were the best due in no small part to Schumacher's brilliance at helping develop the car. In short he both earned and helped make that car what it was.

I'm not sold on Hamilton being too important in the Mercedes technical side by comparison and his opposition drivers are not on the same level as Senna, Prost, Mansell, Lauda, Piquest, Hakkinnen, Alonso. Even Villenueve, Frentzen, Button, Montoya, Raikonnen in his prime all trounce the current field by some distance bar a couple of exceptions. I feel the Mercedes is also better than the other cars by a bigger margin than most of the other examples mentioned (not the McLaren '88, Williams '92 and '93 though, they were ridiculously supreme).
