BuzzJack Music Forum _ UK Charts _ Friday Chart Predictions

Posted by: SevenSeize 11th December 2021, 01:39 PM

Ed Sheeran & Elton John's Merry Christmas could manage a second week at #1 on the singles chart, while some tracks from Juice WRLD's album including Burn or Girl of My Dreams could debut. There's also new songs from Mitski, Tame Impala and Tom Walker

A fourth week at #1 is likely for Adele's 30. There's the second posthumous Juice WRLD release Fighting Demons, along with albums from Paul Weller with An Orchestrated Songbook, Alicia Keys with KEYS and A Boogie wit da Hoodie's B4 AVA

Breakdown of the week
- Saturday: Some information may be posted on social media but it is likely to be missing most streaming data and is unrepresentative.
- Sunday: Official First Look Chart on Radio 1 from 6-7pm. Please do not post spoilers on the forum in advance as this ruins the countdown for any listeners.
- Monday: OCC Top 100 from 5:45pm
- Tuesday: Top 40 update as and when we receive them with requests, this is NOT 100% guaranteed however. The OCC may publish sales flashes of their own accord but likewise, this is not guaranteed. Twitter and social media is your friend for today. Please post any information you find with a source. Do not nag for updates, we will post a top 40 update if we receive one.
- Wednesday: Top 40 update from Music Week from 5:45, and potential top 5 sales but this is not guaranteed.
- Thursday: See Tuesday.

Other notes (please read)
- You may make requests Tuesday to Thursday but outside the top 40, specific positions will not be revealed (unless deemed necessary by a mod).
- Please do not demand a midweek update, one will be posted as and when we receive the information. Patience is a virtue.
- Sales information will be given out as deemed necessary by a moderator, please bear this in mind when making requests. Most requests for sales will be ignored. Any chart requests between No. 41 to 100 will not be answered after Monday's update.
- To keep everyone in the loop of all chart action, please refer to the iTunes and Spotify threads.

I think Burn by Juice WRLD could debut Top 20 despite the Christmas songs if it holds up well enough.

listening to the Paul Weller album now and it's very nice

correct, although oddly the NYPD don't actually have a choir, that was just invented for the song.

QUOTE
The lyrics mention: “The boys of the NYPD choir still singing ‘Galway Bay’.” The NYPD doesn’t actually have a choir, but it does have an Irish pipe band who are featured in the music video. They didn’t know ‘Galway Bay’, so they played
the ‘Mickey Mouse Club March’ instead, and the video was later slowed down to fit the beat.

QUOTE
Ed Sheeran and Elton John are heading for a second week at Number 1 on the Official Singles Chart with their new collaboration Merry Christmas. The track is zooming ahead of its competition in our First Look Chart Update.

Merry Christmas is also one of the front-runners for the coveted Christmas Number 1 this year, next week Ed and Elton will team up with LadBaby for a remix of the track, Sausage Rolls For Everyone, where LadBaby will be challenging to break an Official Charts record as the first act to ever gain four consecutive Christmas Number 1s.

Meanwhile, there’s a hotly-contested battle for Number 2 between two festive classics. As it stands, less than 2,00 chart sales are separating Wham!’s Last Christmas and Mariah Carey’s All I Want For Christmas Is You in the runner-up slot. Currently, Wham! are expected to rise one place to Number 2, while Mariah is at Number 3.

More Christmas songs should be in for a rise in the Top 10 this week too. The Pogues ft. Kirsty MacColl could rise one spot to Number 6 with Fairytale of New York, while George Ezra’s Amazon Original exclusive track Come On Home For Christmas could crack the Top 10 for the first time, rising 18 places to Number 8. It would be the singer-songwriter’s sixth UK Top 10 hit.

Outside the Top 10, Kelly Clarkson could reach a new peak this week with her modern Christmas classic Underneath The Tree. The track is looking to rise three places to Number 14. It previously peaked at Number 15. Other tracks currently on the rise in the Top 20 include Ariana Grande’s Santa Tell Me (16) and Andy Williams’ It’s The Most Wonderful Time Of The Year (17).

And finally, Official Charts newcomer Olivia Dean could well gain her first ever UK Top 20 single this Friday. Her Nat King Cole cover The Christmas Song - another Amazon Music exclusive - is seeking to vault 21 places to Number 18.

George Ezra actually lower than he was in First Look last week. Dare we dream of an Amazon shenanigans free top 10 this year. (Having said that Bieber last year didn't even make the top 20 until the week of the actual Christmas chart where he jumped 21-8 and then hit #4 the week after that).

The Pogues?

Well on the combined list of all time singles bestsellers the highest ranked #2 is actually 'All Of Me' by John Legend at #11. Disputedly Everything She Wants ranks at #15 as part of the original double A-Side but the list hasn't been updated since 2017 and given how it consistently holds up on streaming, Wonderwall which was then ranked at #19 could be higher now. On the paid for sales only chart Moves Like Jagger ranks highest at #37 with Wonderwall second but if you count Everything She Wants then it is far ahead of them both.

The Pogues don't appear in the Top 50 of either list but could do if they were updated for 2021 they probably would somewhere.

It’s not that great, you’d think this week and next there would be enough people out Xmas shopping to help her stabilise better or sell more!

Ed/Elton not that far ahead of the rest. It should be safely No1 for a 2nd week though!

Posted by: Michael Bubré 13th December 2021, 08:14 PM

Michael Bublé's version of 'Let It Snow!' showing up at #51 in the midweeks - I assume it's on SCR given that it's only in the low top 200 on Spotify and not charting on Apple? He had a version of that song that was released as long ago as 2003 but that version doesn't seem to be on Spotify any more if it ever was (although there is a live version on a compilation that was released in 2010). It seems the version that is now available (as a bonus track on the new version of his Christmas album) is a newer recording, weirdly it's tagged as '10th Anniversary' on Spotify despite it being 18 years after the older version - of course it's the 10th anniversary of the original release of the Christmas album but this song wasn't on that original album and none of the other new tracks have the '10th Anniversary' tag. Curious x Coming to have 3 versions of that song all charting simultaneously (and fairly close together) if that holds laugh.gif

Also randomly Mariah Carey's version of 'Christmas (Baby Please Come Home)' appearing at #93, had to check to see if that was a new release that I had missed but it is just a track that was on her 1994 Christmas album, just never charted before even in the midweeks. Guess it might drop out again by the end of the week though like Leona/Ne-Yo and Britney did last week (incidentally neither of those have reappeared in this week's midweek update, the order of the Christmas songs seems to be fluctuating quite a bit from week to week).

Her US success is amazing. She was #1 in the decade-end chart for both the 90's and the 00's. I think she is a great pop star though and I wish she could still get hits. I know Ariana Grande is supposed to be the new version of her, and I sort of like her but it's not the same.

Oh absolutely her popularity was insane in the US back then. She certainly didn’t do too badly in the UK either but it pales in comparison to her success back home. It must be another Madonna/Kylie situation to see her new music flopping now over there.

Mariah's 'Christmas (Baby Please Come Home)' was one of only two songs she sang in her Xmas special 2021 on Apple TV so it may be seeing a new peak in relevance from this? It also got its own segment on Gogglebox on Friday so it might fade away... but I'm not sure what effects Gogglebox usually has on the midweeks, hahah.

As a huge Madonna fan, it really annoyed me at the time that Madonna started not doing so well at just the time Mariah Carey became absolutely huge in the US. I think this probably led to me disliking Mariah. I genuinely can't stand her music now and just avoid her as much as possible (apart from AIWFCIY) which is a lot easier now she's not so successful as well rolleyes.gif

I know what you mean though. I found it so odd when Madonna missed the Hot 100 in the US for the first time with Hollywood, and when Kylie's singles started peaking outside the Top 40 in the UK, I was like wacko.gif WHAT???

I more meant in terms of the singles market. Kylie and Madonna both spent over twenty years gaining Top 10 after Top 10 and writing themselves into chart history. The fact that since the 2010s they have consistently failed to see the same levels of commercial success. It must have been the same tide turning shock in the US when Mariah started failing on Billboard given she had that same status over there. She never really achieved that stardom in the UK despite been successful.

Not to detract from her success, but that's not really surprising given the fan base she has built and the current album market. Her relevance on the singles chart is long gone however.

This so much! It’s bizarre how they spent the 80’s 90’s and 00’s constantly getting top 10 after top 10 then in the 10’s onwards they had such a u turn!? What is their last top 10? All the lovers and Celebration? It was so sudden too I really never saw it coming was so surprised… although Madonna deserved it for the trash she released from MDNA!

Yes. Definitely. Their decline on the singles chart came at a time when CD singles stopped being so readily available in shops - and arguably they both relied heavily on physical singles to achieve a lot of their chart positions. Then came the point where Radio 1 dumped them.

Posted by: Bjork 15th December 2021, 07:31 AM

^and since streaming it's even worst cos playlists are more ageist than R1 :/

I don't think their deliberately mistreating them, it's just their audience is younger than even R1s typical demographic. I'd imagine in ten years time some of the biggest streaming names will still be playlisted that are about now alongside a new wave.

I agree with what others are saying about R1 being less relevant for a hit though.

Posted by: Bjork 15th December 2021, 11:47 AM

I'd say they're deliberately mis-treating them
when everytime Avril Lavigne or Kelly Clarkson or Kylie releases a single it's like track #76 on NMF

Kylie/Avril are like 400th most streamed artists, I don't think they have any reason to place them super high on the NMF by default. The fans will listen to them then regardless.

Sam almost Top 10 despite Christmas songs. cheeseblock.png

(Looking like it will finish in a :gino: #3 this week with Christmas songs removed so if it does not get a Top 3 peak in the new year I will be FEWMIN!)

Posted by: sprock-93 15th December 2021, 06:39 PM

great sales jump for 30 by Adele!

Posted by: CJK 15th December 2021, 06:39 PM

Looks like Ed/Elton on lock for second week at No.1.

Seems close between Wham and Mariah, but actually closer between Mariah and Adele.

Top 20 for my fave Christmas song (Chris Rea) biggrin.gif

Nooo Kelly, wrong way! Go back up!

Posted by: Envoirment 15th December 2021, 06:53 PM

Glad to see album sales jump up quite a bit. Adele's sales are down less than 1k from the same stage last week. I wonder if she can do 70k+ again. *_*

Posted by: Brit 15th December 2021, 06:56 PM

Looks like Adele will do 70k again this week, that will put the album over 500k sold and with Xmas week next week it could go over 600k by end of year

Posted by: Christmasteve201 15th December 2021, 06:59 PM

Thank goodness for the sales bounce in the albums, looks much more respectable!

What sales (streams) did the Buble ‘Christmas’ album peak on last year, 20k?

Posted by: Feel_The_Fever 15th December 2021, 07:20 PM

Those sales are much better now.

Posted by: LiamSime 15th December 2021, 07:39 PM

The fact D-Block Europe are on track to get ANOTHER top 40 hit even with the massive amount of Christmas songs is very disappointing, I haven’t listened to this one and don’t plan to unless it gets played on the chart show, I quite like AJ Tracey normally but anything that involves D-Block is a big no go.

Posted by: Maestro 15th December 2021, 07:41 PM

I imagine Adele will end up at #2 by the end of the week again.

Not sure if I’m potentially incorrect here but it looks like Driving Home for Christmas is potentially underperforming this year in comparison to previous years sad.gif

It was No.13 this week last year... so you're right.

16,767 on the chart announced on Christmas Day.

Going to be around that this year then too I suspect!

Can’t believe how well it’s holding up cheeseblock.png

Really thought it would have been swept away by the Christmas songs

Posted by: Michael Bubré 15th December 2021, 09:52 PM

'Driving Home For Christmas' actually reached a new all-time peak on Spotify the other day! So it must be doing a bit worse on other platforms than usual I guess.

Posted by: Bjork 15th December 2021, 10:02 PM

Think its cos of Apple
They have an exclusive cover of Driving Home for Xmas by Dermot Kennedy
And they’re pushing that like Alexa does with her exclusives
So the Dermot cover is higher than the original
Which is just lowtop 40

Posted by: jimwatts 15th December 2021, 10:09 PM

On Amazon, it hadn't made the top 20 until 5 days ago - it's since gone 20-18-15-11-8...

Posted by: Run_For_Cover 15th December 2021, 10:19 PM

If LadBaby get Xmas #1, they’ll beat Spice Girls' record of most consecutive Xmas #1s and Ed Sheeran will also be the first artist since Westlife in 1999 to score four #1s in the same year

The Ed/Elton collaboration needs to get bigger, or something random and unexpected needs to be released and blow up!

It's currently a three way record between The Beatles, Spice Girls and Ladbaby.

Would that mean Little Mix are at #6 or #11?

Posted by: jimwatts 16th December 2021, 07:09 AM

Just realised only 4 songs in last week's Top 40 are at their peak positions to date: the #1 (which always is), the Amazon exclusives at #26 & #39, and SZA - I Hate U at #38. Everything else is either on its way down or an old song coming back up. Not sure what the average is, except it's definitely more than that. Fortunately it looks like there'll be a few more this week.

I think the Boris Johnson thing is the only competition, depends if people's anger boils over into (vastly) increased sales this year.

I'm not actually sure that LadBaby going for a less recognisable song will help them, even with Ed and Elton on it. I know it will have been No.1 for two weeks but Merry Christmas is hardly going to be a classic singalong in the minds of the general public at this stage like, funnily enough, the Shakin' Stevens song we were expecting would have been. Then again, I guess a lot of people buying it will care not for how it sounds, and more about the cause it's supporting.

Either way, 100-130k sales would be my prediction and it's not absolutely insurmountable that The K*nts could get up that way too with media focus and social media support in the right places.

Posted by: WhoOdyssey 16th December 2021, 01:39 PM

The Kunts are also releasing 7 versions of their single tomorrow, with more during the week I'd imagine!

They had 4 Christmas no. 1s but not consecutively (1963, 1964, 1965, 1967).

They had 4 no. 1s in 1963 according to all the music papers and the BBC chart but not in Record Retailer (which is what the OCC use for their "official" charts).

The Spice Girls didn't have four consecutively either, so it will be The Beatles and the Spice Girls record of 3 that gets broken. Let's give the old bands their due...

Posted by: Christmasteve201 16th December 2021, 11:33 PM

They do seem to have momentum wifey everything that’s happened. I would just love a decent chart battle to reinvigorate the chart on Xmas week with Ladbaby and Kunts breaking 70k and then we will have Ed/Elton, Adele and the Wham/Mariah/Pogues selling 45k so sales will be Bouant!

I can't see it beating LadBaby but I do think the news of the last couple of weeks has been perfectly timed for it to challenge for #2.

They are at 25/1 on bet365... hmm x
