I think these new Rita songs are seriously good, particularly 'Bang Bang' (which sounds like a smash) and 'Big'.
I'd feel extremely confident this could have put her back on the map had the whole birthday party thing not happened.

One thing that occured to me about "Rise Up" tonight is how astonishing it is that it's got a Gold certification despite having only ever spent 5 weeks in the top 100, never made the top 40, and that it's become a really well known song over the last few years purely on people either singing it on talent shows, or it being played in the background in TV shows. I don't think I've ever heard it on the radio.
And also it was really Simon Cowell pushing it on his shows to start off, just because he liked it, that made it happen.

A Ne-Yo revival would definitely be welcome, he had quite a long few years of relevance, I’m quite surprised to see it’s nine years since his last top ten hit.
I feel like with the right song he could have another smash. A greatest hits would probably be a decent success for him too, in the way that Jason Derulo’s hits album often seems to be low top 100. Most of his big hits were spread across different studio albums.

12 top 10 hits including features (at least 3 of which I'd say he's more than a significant enough presence on to count them as 'Ne-Yo hits') and he had several other hits if you don't arbitrarily cut off at #10 as well, I'd say he has a pretty expansive chart history 
(not to mention that 5 out of those 12 were #1s! though 'Beautiful Monster' is probably one of his most forgettable hits despite being one of those #1s lol)

I've not listened to it for ages, but Ne-Yo used to be a mainstay on Heart FM with both Closer (it was wonderful to see that get to No.1 after quite a long and slow climb) and Give Me Everything, which iirc they used to use their very own edit which effectively cuts out Pitbull - the lead artist - and just repeats Ne-Yo's part countless times
My favourites of his are Closer, Miss Independent and his contribution to Keri Hilson's Knock You Down - although him, Keri and Kanye all play equal parts in that track's brilliance. I also liked his Rihanna and Calvin Harris collaborations.
For someone who's had so many big hits - especially with the five No.1s - it never really felt like he was a huge superstar in the league of other acts with that much success, which is a shame.

He has such a solid back catalogue- I agree with Bray that the one song of his that is really iffy that did so well was Beautiful Monster. But he has quite a string back catalogue of solid hits from the late 00s and early 10s. Most of his collabs are great and I honestly think Knock You Down is such a great song. The three work so well together, I've heard a few songwriters say that if they could have written any song over the past 10 years it was that one in interviews.

But the last chorus of Closer where the beat changes is great and 'Miss Independent' is very nostalgic sounding now I think.

Coming With You is very good I remember it featured on the best selling Motown songs day BBC Radio 2 did and yes its a good modern interpretation of the Motown sound!
Yeah I liked it at the time and it's still a good song.

Not that slow, or out of the ordinary, but relatively so for 2008 and by his prior standards. I certainly recall being pleasantly surprised when it edged its way up to No.1, though I don't remember what week the CD came out.

It wasn't really specifically Pitbull, they just used to never play any rap music (they had a similar edit for 'I Gotta Feeling'). Although they would somewhat bafflingly still occasionally play 'Gangsta's Paradise' by Coolio which always struck me as a very weird song to pick as your one exception to no rap ever (I expect it was because of the Stevie Wonder sample but still!)

That's a really interesting point Aly, I think a lot of artists in that late 00s to early 10s struggled with the move to streaming, viralism etc. - Jessie J, Taio Cruz, Flo Rida, Nicki Minaji, Pitbull, Lil Wayne to name put a few. All had solid hits over a good proportion of years but really struggled when streaming took off. I think a lot of these may just be down to natural cycles and the cutthroat nature of the music industry, but it is surprising!

Every new decade has a bit of a clearout from the music of the previous, a combination of changing styles and music distribution - disco became incredibly uncool a year or two into the 1980s and ABBA were surprisingly unpopular for a few years up until their 90s revival. A lot of 80s synth groups struggled to move into the 90s, a lot of 90s pop acts didn't make it long into the 2000s and then there's the download/streaming transition in the 2010s as mentioned.
On the plus side there's always a revival of the bands and styles of 20 years previous, so look out for a lot of 2000s-era acts getting a second go at things in the years ahead!

Not that crazy, it was fairly common back in those days. People bought singles for the extra tracks, of which Oasis usually had 3 on each single. In fact 'Don't Look Back In Anger', despite being the 4th single from one of the biggest selling albums ever, opened at #1 with first week sales of 227,000!

I’ve always thought it’s an injustice that Stand By Me peaked at two when their two inferior singles from Be Here Now got to no.1.
Stand By Me would have been a shoe in for #1 if it wasn't for the unforeseen Diana/Elton event.
Personally I think 'Don't Go Away' should have been released as a single from Be Here Now, definitely my favourite from that album.

None, iTunes sales are very low and it isn't in the Spotify or Apple Music chart, plus any streams it does get are ACR affected
