18th Place: Five Tattoos
Score: 105

Kicking off our Ella Henderson rate results, we have our 18th place song. The second from last track on the deluxe edition of the album, I personally thought Five Tattoos was a bit boring and a non event kinda' song, almost as if it's a filler track. Easily outranked given how much stronger the other songs are and this was reflected in most of the scoring! However saying that, the highest mark this track got was a 10 from Billy and the lowest was a 3 from n4yr, so no -1 or +11's to be awarded from those of you who rated. Will this ever be released as a single? Probably not, but I'm sure outside of Buzzjack in Ella's wider fanbase the song is a favourite among many.

Posted by: JimmyT 22nd February 2015, 03:58 PM

Five Tattoos was put out as a promo track in October 2013, a whole year before the album.
Probably surprised it made the cut, but a decent song about an ex.

The clue to who the ex is, is on her a Wiki smile.gif

17th Place: 1996
Score: 107.5

Up next we have Ella's birth year of 1996! Yet another deluxe track as failed to make it through to even the top 15. Again, for me this is another boring track and one I wouldn't listen to out of choice but I'm sure based on the personal nature of this song, I'd imagine this is one of Ella's favourites. This song also received one -1 and one 11 from Nelly!

Posted by: JimmyT 23rd February 2015, 09:51 AM

I find 1996 the most cringey on the album.
But actually if you make it through the first 30 seconds it's a decent song!

Posted by: Nezzles. S 23rd February 2015, 09:52 PM

17th!? 17th for 1996 ohmy.gif When I voted this was probably my favorite song from the album! It was adorable heart.gif Justice is needed hitler.gif

Rockets is gonna do well cause its a really nice upbeat soulful love song smile.gif
Whereas 1996 is a corny over-personal song about her growing up

Rest of results coming asap - my Mum's been in hospital and my laptop charger broke so had to be put on delay!

Hope things are OK with your family Sean. Good luck.

Sean has passed me the Ella Rate baton, so I'll be restarting it real soon! smile.gif

Posted by: JimmyT 20th March 2015, 02:57 PM

16th Place: Lay Down
Score: 116

Lay Down coming in as a surprise number 16, to me anyway! A haunting track about death and loss, is maybe a bit dour for some, but it was the first track to break the iTunes chart in Ireland.
Produced by TMS (Sigma Changing, Emile Sande Read All About It), with whom Ella is currently again working with.
PAJ88 scored it a 4 and JimmyT a big fat 10!

Posted by: JimmyT 20th March 2015, 04:29 PM

Joint 15th Place: Billie Holiday
Score: 117

Billie Holiday you either love it (Ryan 9.5) or hate it (Cameron -1)- I love it! A feel good song, with a bluesy, retro feel inspired by her granddad's music. Comes on the Deluxe album as a welcome respite after a few ballads.

Posted by: JimmyT 20th March 2015, 04:52 PM

Joint 15th Place: Beautifully Unfinished
Score: 117

Beautifully Unfinished. An underrated ballad just waiting to be on a film score (move over Yours!). Middle of the road for most on Buzzjack although Cameron 0, Calum Hood 10 think different!... and Cody Slayberry 8 (It's asking for a dance remix!)- yep agreed!!

Posted by: JimmyT 21st March 2015, 06:09 PM

13th Place: All Again
Score: 122.5

A fairly anonymous song on the album, rarely mentioned. But it has a stunning, searing vocal from Ella and has an interesting, almost musical theatre feel at times.
Sean gave it a mighty 10, most everyone else a solid 7 or so.

Posted by: JimmyT 21st March 2015, 06:31 PM

12th Place: Giants
Score: 127

Giants is the final song on the Deluxe album. Co-written with Claude Kelly, it is an uplifting, feel good song which I think could be a commercial success. Sadly it was left off the US release of Chapter One so obviously ‘her team’ feel differently!
Most on Buzzjack liked the song, but it was hurt by Sean 4 and Acidburn 5 grrrr.

Posted by: Lee_J11 21st March 2015, 06:45 PM

All Again is one of my favourites on the album - I don't get how it's rated so averagely by everyone on here sad.gif

Agreed, the lyrics in the Youtube thumbnail are just perfect as well! wub.gif

Posted by: JimmyT 22nd March 2015, 12:07 PM

11th Place: The First Time
Score: 127.5

Surprisingly beating Giants is one of my least favourite tracks on the album, The First Time. For me a bit of a jazzy mashup with a nasty intro! Although to be fair the chorus is decent.
Sean, Ultraviolence and Ryan gave this 9 with most the Buzzjack pack giving it a 6 or 7.

Posted by: JimmyT 22nd March 2015, 12:30 PM

10th Place: Hard Work
Score: 129.5

Into the top 10 and the bigger hitters and quite a few surprises!
At #10 we have Hard Work. A nice laid back track incorporating some fantastic whistle notes (Would like to hear them live, we know she can deliver after her great XFactor ‘Loving You’ performance!).
It was supported by a cute Vevo video showing some of Ella’s ‘hardworking journey’. The track seems to be popular in the US and in fact charted #73 in Austria, no idea why!
Ryan gave it a mighty 10, Cameron and PAJ88 a 9.5.

Posted by: R0B S 22nd March 2015, 12:53 PM

Beautifully Unfinished & Giants are two of my highlights of the album. Shame they finished near the bottom sad.gif

Two of my favs as well! I guess I like pop, soul and some gospel--anything like jazz I run a mile!

Posted by: mr_aly 22nd March 2015, 04:07 PM

'The First Time' is very Back To Basics era Xtine, along the lines of something like 'Slow Down Baby'.

I forgot to vote in this but really hoping 'Give Your Heart Away' doesn't crash out soon. I love it so much.

Posted by: JimmyT 22nd March 2015, 05:05 PM

9th Place: Rockets
Score: 137

Rockets comes in at #9, Kaboom! Co-written with Claude Kelly ("My Life Would Suck Without You", "Party in the U.S.A.", "Wrapped Up") and produced by TMS, Ella's favourite production team.
It’s a soulful feel good song and one of my favourites on the album- although it divides opinion ahem Cameron 11 vs Sean -1 !!

Posted by: Sean. 22nd March 2015, 05:17 PM

Gave it my -1 rightly so kink.gif

Posted by: Cameron 22nd March 2015, 10:43 PM

Hard Work and Rockets should absolutely be higher!

Posted by: (Zach) 23rd March 2015, 10:45 PM

Happy with the results so far. No big disappointments here although I do wish Giants was a bit higher.

Posted by: JimmyT 24th March 2015, 12:44 PM

8th Place: Give Your Heart Away
Score: 137.5

Somehow just beating the mighty Rockets is ‘Give Your Heart Away’. A harmless mid range ballad, for me approaching filler and punching above its weight in the Buzzjack Rate! Calum Hood 11, Cody and Liam 10 evidently think different!!

And now for the first big surprise......

Posted by: JimmyT 24th March 2015, 12:57 PM

7th Place: Mirror Man
Score: 138

Mirror Man, Ella’s 4th UK single, drops in at number 7!! Co-written with Al Shux (Alicia Keys Empire State of Mind) it showcases Ella’s soul laden vocal talent and has great production.
Maybe it’s a grower and after seeing the stunning video, co-starring a panther (Murphy), some may have changed their mind of late, I have…..
But it failed to make much chart impact (#96) and they may have been better having a look at Buzzkjack’s top 5 before going with it as a single!

Posted by: mr_aly 24th March 2015, 01:03 PM

'Give Your Heart Away' is incredible! That would have been a 10 for me had I participated.

Another surprise next------

6th Place: Yours
Score: 139.5

Yours, Ella’s 3rd UK single, comes in at Buzzjack #6! A romantic but somehow melancholic ballad, it was released for its Xmas appeal and did a pretty good job, charting at #16. It subsequently received boosts from ‘appearances’ on Hollyoaks and Vampire Diaries and continues to sell steadily. For me it is a really good solid ballad, but lacks a little something to make it great.

I think for me, "Yours" is quite possibly the most personal to me from the album especially at the time of it's release.

Yes, to be fair a lot of people have had a personal connection with the song and quite a few have used it as their wedding song.

Very fitting to my life from November to January of this year! But I never expected it to be used as wedding songs! ohmy.gif

Posted by: JimmyT 25th March 2015, 08:33 PM

5th Place: Missed
Score: 141

'Missed' marked the start of Ella’s journey, wowing the judges and the British public on series 9 of XFactor. It demonstrated her vocal talent, talent as a songwriter and performer- ahem and she was ONLY 16! :0)
It remains a beautiful heartfelt ballad, and might just make it as US single #2…

Posted by: JimmyT 26th March 2015, 10:45 AM

4th Place: Pieces
Score: 142

Pieces is an upbeat anthem, co-written and produced by TMS. A favourite with many fans, and evidently Buzzjackers!- it seems to have been largely overlooked, never being performed live yet, although I have a feeling it will prove a favourite on Ella’s planned live tour.

Single material? Absolutely!

Posted by: mr_aly 26th March 2015, 11:38 AM

'Pieces' is great!

I just re-watched that X-Factor audition for 'Missed', she looks so great and vibrant there. It kind of made me realise how frumpy they've styled her at various points throughout this campaign.

Agreed. I must admit I find her styling strange, especially as she obviously has an interest in fashion.
No doubt they want her to look 'classy', but hey you can do that other than wearing black, and those black jumpsuits arent the height of style either!

Seems to me they missed a trick in using fashion to enhance her image and impact.

Posted by: JimmyT 26th March 2015, 06:18 PM

3rd Place: Glow
Score: 147

Entering the top 3 at #3....comes Glow, the 2nd UK single from Chapter One. Probably the most modern production mix on the album, it shows some of Ella’s versatility and may yet lead to her doing an EDM collab at some point.
Not the most successful of follow up singles though, after the monster hit of Ghost…
Sean gave it a massive 11, Ryan a 10—Juliano a 6, Joe and myself a 7.

Posted by: Sean. 26th March 2015, 07:57 PM

Glow was overshadowed by Ghost unfortunately sad.gif

Posted by: JimmyT 27th March 2015, 03:30 PM

2nd Place: Empire
Score: 160

Waaaaay above Yours and Mirror Man in Buzzjack popularity comes Empire! Co-written by Camille Purcell, who also wrote Glow.
It remains ‘the one that got away’ for many, including the media luvvies and critics in Ella’s first Live showcase before the album launch – it was their standout track!
Is is it too late for an Empire single release? probably, was it a mistake not releasing it? probably!

Posted by: JimmyT 27th March 2015, 03:38 PM

1st Place: Ghost
Score: 176

And at #1, unsurprisingly, comes Ghost!!, Ella’s debut upbeat soul-laden single.
Co-written by Ryan Tedder and accompanied by a glossy video shot in New Orleans, it has broken Ella as a global artist, going platinum in the US, Australia and New Zealand as well as the UK and gold in a bunch of other countries.

It is clearly the album's standout track, perfectly placing Ella's soul and gospel tinged vocals in a pop context and also bringing out some of her sexy, sultry side.

Posted by: Joe. 27th March 2015, 03:43 PM

It couldn't have been anything else, really. 'Ghost' is a career defining moment, she is very, very lucky to have been given that song (I know she has a writing credit). I think it's a great album, but Ghost is *so* epic shes going to have to work really hard not to let it turn her into a one-hit wonder.

Thanks for doing this, JimmyT!

Posted by: jark 27th March 2015, 04:02 PM

Ghost is the best song of last year. It's just beyond.

I do prefer Mirror Man to Empire right now, but they should have been the second and third singles. Glow was so boring and Yours is just wet.

Thanks Joe!

I think she's already not a one-hit wonder, with another top 10 and a top 20 (and a platinum album).
But I do agree she needs another Top 3 (even another no. 1) to firmly establish herself - and for that to happen before the next album ideally (maybe a collab or EDM track over the summer).
I assume the next album will be out for next Xmas, but I may be way off with that!
