BuzzJack Music Forum _ R&B and Hip-Hop _ MOBO 2017 - Best International Act

Posted by: ML Hammer95 1st November 2017, 11:32 AM

The MOBOs are now this month, and the award for Best International Act is probably one of the hardest to call!

DJ Khaled undoubtedly had two of the biggest of the biggest tracks of the summer and his (or his son's presence) this year has been huge. However, artists such as Drake, Jay Z & Kendrick Lamar released high quality albums which cannot be ignored.

If there were any acts in Hip Hop that are likely to become 'very 2017' I would nominate Migos and Travis Scott. 'Bad & Boujee' was a huge #1 in America at the start of the year and their presence on social media has become ubiquitous - this is without mentioning Quavo's position as the 2017 rent-a-rapper. Travis Scott also has become a popular feature this year and is headlining 1Xtra Live in November. African artist WizKid is also a deserving nominee, although I consider it very unlikely he will win.

Cardi B is also a surprise nominee, seemingly of the back of one song and her popularity on social media. However that song, 'Bodak Yellow', was the first female hip hop #1 in America since Lauryn Hill (penny for the thoughts of Nicki Minaj) and has become part of the zeitgeist of 2017. The question is if she can build on this or become a 1 hit wonder? Elsewhere, Solange and SZA released critically acclaimed albums and deserve their nominations. I'm not too familiar with either album but 'Cranes In the Sky' and 'Love Galore' are very good!

But who should win? My Top 3 would probably be:

1. Migos
2. Kendrick Lamar
3. Cardi B

Drake is my fave of those but I don't feel like he's defined 2017 in the way he did last year, I reckon Migos or Kendrick deserve it the most based on cultural impact. Personally I prefer Migos of those two so they get my vote.

I went for Kendrick Lamar as I feel like he has made the most cultural impact in terms of critically acclaimed album and growing fanbase.

I voted for SZA because she's the only artist here who's album I've listened to in full (and multiple times too) so is probably the one I've enjoyed the most overall this year.

Cardi B has the highest highs though, aside from "Bodak Yellow" being one of my favourite songs this year, all of her features have been great too and I can't wait to see what she does next. I hope she becomes an even bigger name in 2018 wub.gif

Has to be Kendrick this year for me.

Drake for me no contest. But in reality he'll be overlooked for Kendrick...
