After attracting fairly minor controversy about it in the past, punk duo Slaves have finally decided to change their name to 'Soft Play'. I'm not a massive fan of the new name but I'm just glad that they're back! Isaac has confirmed that there'll be a new album next year, with a new single in January.

Hate the new name personally and I didn't have a problem with the original name. Seems to me like people reading something in to it that wasn't there but I can't say I followed the complaints closely.
I just hope that the relaunch can take them back to their early heights. Last album didn't do anything for me |

I certainly preferred the last album to the second one, although neither hit the heights that Are You Satisfied did. I'm glad they're coming back and I don't think the name change will make any real difference, I get why they've done it, I'd seen some stuff about it in the past but wasn't sure how much it cut through.

There were some articles around in their early days, but there was never any big controversy about it from what I can see. The US metal band Slaves also changed their name a few years ago too, to 'Rain City Drive'. |

Their name on streaming platforms has now changed to ‘SOFT PLAY’ finally. So hopefully new music is coming soon! So much for it releasing in January.

First time hearing about the name change; I hope they get some decent publicity whenever new music drops so the wider public are aware it’s the same band.

Twice this weekend at 2000 Trees Bobby Vylan made the claim that he was directly responsible for the band chsnging their name.
He stated he loved the band but not the name and so befriended them in order to make his point, stating that no black person was ever likely to wear one of their t-shirts for example. Apparently their was no argument. When Soft Play played a couple of hours later they didn't dispute or reference this claim. This post has been edited by Severin: 9th July 2023, 09:45 AM |

Just seen the name change now - my first reaction was 'at least now they won't get confused with the American band of the same name', only to see in this thread that they've changed their name as well!

After being with Virgin for their first three albums, they’re now signed to BMG! Quite a different sort of act to what they usually sign.
