I've been working on software to calculate artists weeks on chart from individual charts and have come across the following instances where artists of the same name have to be split rather than be added together:
Billie 1) Singer turned actress Billie Piper who had her early hits under just her first name 2) Singer who was a featured artist on a record by H2O (see below) Blue 1) Scottish band who had one hit in 1977 2) British boy bad who had 3 number ones in 2001-02 and represented the UK in the Eurovision Song Contest in 2011 Drifters 1) American soul legends who had hits throughout the 60s & 70s 2) The original name of Cliff Richard's backing group who later became the Shadows Enigma 1) British session musician group who recorded two Stars-on-45 type medleys in 1981-2 2) German-based musical/production umbrella artist name for Romanian Michael Cretu Fergie 1) Irish DJ/producer who had three minor hits in 2000-02 2) Stacy Ferguson of the Black Eyed Peas who had a parallel solo career Goldie 1) British Rock group who had one top ten hit in 1977 2) Briitsh Producer/DJ with hits from 1994-98 H2O 1) British post New-Romantic group who had one top 20 and another top 40 single in 1983 2) Dance act who had two hits (one "featuring Billie" - see above) (There was also "H Two O" who had a huge hit with "What's It's Gonna Be" featuring Platnum in 2008) Hal 1) Irish group who had three small hits 2004-05 2) British production outfit who had one hit in 2007 using the talents of X-Files actress Gillian Anderson Honky 1) British group of the mid-1970s who spent 5 weeks in the top 50 in mid 1977 with "Join The Party" 2) British rap/production duo who also spent 5 weeks in the chart, but with 4 separate hits in 1993-6 Jets 1) British rockabilly group active from 1981-84 2) American family group of Polynesian descent, with 3 hits in 1987-88 Klaxons 1) Belgian instrumental group who only troubled the charts once in 1983 2) British indie group, hitmakers from 2006-2010 Love Affair 1) British group of the 60s, had a number one with "Everlasting Love" 2) American group who had a solitary UK hit in 2008 as "Hercules & Love Affair" with "Blind" Mel And Kim 1) The Appleby sisters who were becoming one of the biggest acts at the time before Mel's untimely death 2) Mel Smith & Kim Wilde who teamed up for a comedy Christmas hit in 1987 Michelle 1) Canadian Michelle Narine who had 1 minor solo hit under just her first name, plus 2 alongside Big Bass this time including her surname 2) Scottish Michelle McManus, winner of Pop Idol who had 2 solo hits including a number one Nirvana 1) Anglo/Irish duo who made number 34 in 1968 2) Legendary American grunge-rockers, recently back in the charts with their debut hit "Smells Like Teen Spirit" Paris 1) Short-lived British group of the early 1980s who had a solitary hit single 2) British rapper who also managed just the one hit, 1995 (There was also Paris & Sharp, who I think were also unrelated to the above) Solo 1) British production duo with two hits, one a dance version of the theme tune to "Rainbow" 2) American vocal gorup with 2 hits in 1996, helpfully often listed as "Solo (US)" Space 1) French instrumental trio who took "Magic Fly" to number two in 1977 2) British indie band with 3 top tens among their 11 hits Stargazers 1) Early charting British vocal group, 2 number ones in their own right plus one backing Dickie Valentine 2) British Rock'n'roll revival group from the early 80s who managed a solitary number 57 hit with an EP in 1982 Storm 1) British group who covered Diana Ross' "It's My House" in 1979 2) German production group active around the turn of the millennium Andy Williams 1) Legendary American crooner, first hit no. 1 in 1957 and was last seen in the charts in late 2008 2) Related American singer, had just the one hit in a duet with David Williams John Williams 1) British guitarist, had one solo hit and was also a member of Sky 2) American composer/conductor of numerous movie scores, a handful of which have yielded chart hits in Williams' name There are certainly others who have been credited as part of duos etc. (e.g. Dave as in Chas & Dave and Sam & Dave) but these may constiute a second programme of work to isolate these. There has also been a number of "Near-misses" - Michael Jackson/Mick Jackson, Eve/E.V.E., Paris Dolls/Parisdolls, Madonna/Mad Donna etc. Any more? I have this niggling feeling I'm missing something pretty obvious! (I'm not interested in artists who have had only album chart placings, or US charts or anything like that!) |

2 different artists called 'Sasha' both charted in 2004 - the Jamaican dancehall DJ who featured on 'I'm Still In Love With You' by Sean Paul and the Welsh house DJ who had a #49 hit with Felix Da Housecat and Armand Van Helden called 'Watching Cars Go By'.

QUOTE There has also been a number of "Near-misses" - Michael Jackson/Mick Jackson, Well we have had Khalid featured on Rollin (#44) and DJ Khaled from I'm The One (#1) recently. Also Kris Kross and Kris Kross Amsterdam, which are different groups have both had UK hits.Eve/E.V.E., Paris Dolls/Parisdolls, Madonna/Mad Donna etc. QUOTE There are certainly others who have been credited as part of duos etc. (e.g. Dave as in Chas & Dave and Sam & Dave) but these may constiute a second programme of work to isolate these. And Dave as in just 'Dave', who had a #63 hit with J-Hus in Feb 2017 called Samantha. This post has been edited by Spinfanny: 22nd June 2017, 05:11 PM |

Alexia - Italian singer who had 3 hits in 1998.
Alexia - UK singer who just missed the top 40 in 2003. Bad Company - group who had 3 top 40 hits in 1974-75. Bad Company - drum and bass group (whose members included DJ Fresh) who had 2 minor hits in 2002 before changing their name to Bad Company UK (despite the other Bad Company also being from the UK!) and reaching the top 20 in 2003. Blackout - just missed the top 40 in 1999. Blackout - reached the top 20 in 2001. There are certainly others who have been credited as part of duos etc. (e.g. Dave as in Chas & Dave and Sam & Dave) but these may constiute a second programme of work to isolate these. Also JoJo and K-Ci and JoJo. Her Official Charts page is mixed up and includes their singles too. |
