BuzzJack Music Forum _ Movies and Theatre _ Oscars 2015: Who should've won?

Posted by: jsilv 5th March 2016, 09:16 AM

WELCOME to another little activity to celebrate Buzzjack's 10th Anniversary!

This time we'll be looking at the Oscars, much like we did last month just vote for you wish had won the Oscar. We'll do this for the past 10 years of Oscars in these categories and then we'll do an ultimate round and determine the best performances/film/director of the last decade biggrin.gif

Edit: aw shit, hopefully a mod can fill the rest of the best directors in? biggrin.gif

Film: 'Boyhood'
Actor: Eddie Redmayne "The Theory Of Everything"
Actress: Rosamund Pike "Gone Girl"
Supporting Actor: J. K. Simmons "Whiplash"
Supporting Actress: Emma Stone "Birdman"
Director: Alejandro G. Iñárritu "Birdman"

Best Actress was by far the hardest for me. Both Rosamund & Julianne gave career best performances! Best Director was really hard too. Supporting Actress seemed, to me at least, to be the weakest category.

This is sorted. Nice idea!

Boyhood
Eddie Redmayne
Julianne Moore
JK Simmons
Emma Stone
Richard Linklater

I don't know about a weakest category, but I definitely view lead actress as the strongest. Still wasn't tough singling Julianne out (she was so good) but Reese is an excellent 2nd choice, Rosamund 3rd probably (Marion being the only one out of these categories that I never saw). Looking back at the Best Picture noms, I definitely prefer the crop we had this year.

American Sniper
Bradley Cooper
Julianne Moore
Ed Norton
Laura Dern
Alejandro G. Iñárritu

Apart from Reese Witherspoon (and the Best Actress category as a whole to be honest), this was such a weak year for nominations in every category!

Anyway:
Best Picture: Boyhood
Best Director: Richard Linklater- Boyhood
Best Supporting Actor: Ethan Hawke- Boyhood
Best Supporting Actress: Patricia Arquette- Boyhood
Best Actor: Benedict Cumberbatch- The Imitation Game
Best Actress: Reese Witherspoon- Wild

Boyhood domination here!

• Whiplash (I loved this because it was just so thrilling and tense, never expected to like it that much either!) (Also a big fan of Birdman and The Theory of Everything)
• Steve Carrell (Just so unnerving, I knew there wasn't something quite right with his character and that moment at the end where he does what he does to Mark Ruffalo is excellent) (My next choice would be Eddie Redmayne)
• Julianne Moore (Such a heart-breaking performance, so many sad parts) (Next choice would be Reese Witherspoon even though I didn't like the film itself)
• J. K. Simmons (The main thing that made Whiplash so intense, so much energy and menace in his performance) (This was probably the strongest category imo, I'd have given it to Edward Norton and Ethan Hawke in any other year really.)
• Emma Stone (The way she delivered that monologue was the moment I realises how good she could really be) (Also loved Patricia Arquette in Boyhood, I didn't really rate the film highly but the perfomances by the Mum and Dad were outstanding)
• Alejandro G. Inarittu (Loved the one take thing and thought this had great directiong throughout.) (Not sure the borefest of Foxcatcher got nominated here but all the other nominees were very deserving. I didn't really like Grand Budapest Hotel or Boyhood but the direction in both was very unique and worthy of recognition.
