I'm being totally PREDICTABLE but the Harry song is amazing, it's totally different to anything in the chart right now but it's catchy and has enough of a hook to ensure it's still a big hit I think. My Twitter timeline has been going crazy all morning, expect a big first update soon!

It's very different to anything One Direction ever released. It's hardly "pop" at all, it's more like a retro indie rock song. Very Bowie indeed.

It's a nice soft rock ballad song it draws you in as the track rolls on but it's a tad too long. It also feels like a James Bond theme track in places. I do see the David Bowie contrast.

Well that's Harry Styles on course to become an incredibly big star for the long haul. We were warned it would be very Bowie/Queen and it certainly leans towards the former.

And it didn't even feel like 5:40 of my time which says a lot! Very impressed.

I can't see this being more than a 2 week at #1 to be honest (possibly only 1). Not because it's a bad song, but simply because it's not commercail enough. It'll make it this week for sure I'd say, but in the long run I think it's more of an album seller, and he'll do big album numbers off the back of the song.

I can see Symphony being #1 the next Friday or the Friday after.

I can't see it being a massively long running number 1 either, but I can't see "Shape Of You" climbing back now either. I think it could fall to 3 or even 4 next week - not quite 1-5 in "One Dance" fashion but still not top 2.

"Symphony" would also make a great number 1 as I keep saying! I hope "Galway Girl" stalls at 2.

I'm just hoping there is still life in the Clean Bandit track in 2 weeks time, I wouldn't mind seeing the track at #1 actually.

Also the new Fast & Furious film is out next week, I'm thinking something can drop next week from the soundtrack album.

Wow @ Harry being No. 1 already, I'm gonna have to eat my words! It's very retro sounding, but I like that it's different from anything else around at the moment. I actually get more Oasis vibes from it than Bowie, I wonder if the whole album has that retro sound.

I'm not a One Direction fan but his solo effect is just amazing, better than the previous acts from One Direction. I'm really feeling the 70s era David Bowie sound, errr... Oasis really... I can't really pin point them

I can see Harry getting to stratospheric levels with this release already. His album is gonna be massive, maybe not Ed Sheeran 'Divide' levels, but I'd imagine he will easily smash the opening sales record for a solo male debut or something.

Yes, but you have to look at the leads, his estimated sales on iTunes today are 24k. I obviously think 100k is a bit of a reach for today alone, but it should manage much bigger first day than we're used to.

Surely if the #1 on iTunes does 5k in one day, and Harry shoots to number 1 outselling the number one over a 24 hour period 4:1 in just an hour that means Harry sold 20k in that space of time hence he's projected for a hell of a lot more in the day?

Edit: rereading Tinasha's post seems to suggest the same although I'd still think 100k would be fairly easy

Well I was responding to the 100k in one day prediction. Pure sales I reckon it might do 85k for the whole week, it will surely drop off massively through the week. It will be more interesting to see how well it does on streams as that will ultimately determine if it will be a long stay at #1.

A few words about Harry's single.

A lot of people say about Bowie style.
Really? Which one? Young Bowie? Glam-rock Bowie? Electro-Bowie? Techno-Bowie? Soul-Bowie? Nobody of 'them' actually.
Maybe only old Bowie.

For me musically it sounds 99% like https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=MB2F6nagjKs (even more Coldplay's https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=ThcCE8BKtpg) or Tom Chaplin than somebody from the golden years.

But first of all these comparisions are good.
Second, I like the song. I think it's the best single by 1D boys.

I get the Bowie comparisons entirely but I don't really see how it's "self indulgent", it's just very clearly inspired by the likes of Bowie and Oasis. It's a pretty bold choice of debut single, he could've easily scored a hit with a generic tropical song or something.

While the song is obviously not flopping and still has a huge lead, I did expect it to do better. Only two dark green updates before three red ones is not great for one of the most hyped releases of the year so far. It will be interesting to see how long he can keep the #1 spot

I know the specific number of updates doesn't matter, I' m just saying I expected it to jump up that fast because Harry by far has the biggest percentage of the One Direction fan base but I also expected it to keep growing seeing as radio stations were likely hammering it, therefore exposing it to new audiences all day long.

On My Mind is a good track, the production is much different to most modern chart dance and the synths are a bit trancey too, they remind me a bit of those in 4 Strings - Take Me Away (Into The Night) back in 2002. It should definitely make official top 40 now.

It's not as if "Symphony" is making up the gap at any different rate to any behind, Harry is just slowing up. It will still have the deficit to both Ed tracks on streaming.

Yeah, due to the rate in which Clean Bandit is catching up with Ed on Spotify, I would imagine that it could easily get a week at the top after Harry.

Would be good to let Harry and CB both have a week. Both great songs in their own right and we can finally get some diversity and movement at the top of the charts for basically the first time this year!

Pixie getting a bigger effect than Take That! This may seem like a long shot but i do think this could be a moderate (top 75/100) hit if it gets reduced to 59p and manages to stabalise in the top 40 and gets added to a popular Spotify list. It's sad that top 75 is the most optimistic prediction for a new Pixie single

Well it is still #1 on iTunes...

The fall looks fast but don't forget that the larger the numbers of #2 the smaller % change that actually represents, e.g. 0.2 to 0.3 is a 33% decline, whereas 0.5 to 0.6 is only a 17% decline. This is pretty normal for a hugely hyped new single release, all it suggests is that Harry is unlikely to get two weeks at number 1.

In terms of potential charting tracks, Anton Powers and Pixie Lott - Baby is the best dance song of the year so far for me (along with Drake, Jorja Smith and Black Coffee - Get It Together of course), On my Mind is a bit dull and minimal for me, although it is better than You Don't Know Me imo.
