Hotline To Heaven \| Bananarama \|[Avg.4] Highest Rates: 6 [Johnkm, MIKEMYERS] Lowest Rates : 1 [fgiboy2511] So kicking off these results is one of their lesser remembered songs "Hotline To Heaven" and by no means a surprise, released in October 1984 and taken as the 4th and final single from their 2nd self titled album "Bananarama". This also marks as one of their darker and more serious in tone, as with the basic theme of the album and was over 7 minutes long on the album version, but was edited down to 3 and a half minutes for it's single release. It failed to perform well on the charts by peaking at #58 on the UK charts and wasn't given a release anywhere else. Okay it's not one of their best or exciting singles, but it is rather underrated and gotta give them points for taking a risk and recording something different to what other pop acts were doing at the time. 32. Do Not Disturb \| True Confessions \|[Avg.4.681] Highest Rates : 6.5/6 [Acidburn, Johnkm, Kellyann, Lolhey] Lowest Rates: 2.5 [Pippa] At #32 is another forgotten nana's single "Do Not Disturb" released in August 1985 as originally a stand alone single, but was later added to their 3rd album "True Confessions" the following year. This was more of a stop gap while the girls were taking a time out after Keren's pregnancy and writing tracks for the next album, so this was released just to keep the girls in the public eye, as it was a very quiet year for them, releasing only one single that year and it would be another 9 months before they release another single. The girls didn't like this song as they stated that when the album was released that it was all their ideas apart from this. It didn't set the charts alight by reaching #31 on the UK charts, spending 3 weeks in the top 40 and 6 weeks on the chart overall. 31. Cheers Then \| Deep Sea Skiving \| [Avg.5.090] Highest Rates: 9 [Kylie Jackson] Lowest Rates: 0 [fgiboy2511] Finally rounding off the bottom three is another flop single "Cheers Then", released in November 1982 and taken as the 3rd single from their debut album "Deep Sea Skiving" and marked the first single to be written by the girls themselves and it's also their first ballad release. The single bombed on the UK charts by peaking at #45 and lasted 7 weeks on the charts. But coming off the back from 3 top 5 singles, this was seen as a major disappointment despite being well received by critics. The girls stated in an interview that they started to take themselves seriously after this flopped as they thought that they just bring out singles and have them top the charts, this brought them down to reality and they'd score another hit again with their follow up. In my opinion I think that there were better tracks on the album such as "Young At Heart" or even the cheesy "Doctor Love" would have been better choices instead of this. Results So Far 31. Aie A Mwana \| Deep Sea Skiving \| [Avg.5.1] Highest Rates: 7.5/7 [Kellyann, Bartsimpson] Lowest Rates: -1 [fgiboy2511] At the #30 is Bananarama's debut single "Aie A Mwana" released in September 1981 and was originally recorded as a demo, which was also the version that got released. The track was later re-recorded and ended up on their debut album "Deep Sea Skiving". The single was issued by an independent label Demon Records and therefore had lack of funding for a music video or any promo, which led it to peak at #92 on the UK charts, which isn't all bad considering it had no promo at all. The song was originally recorded by Black Blood and sung in Swahili, which the girls themselves heard in a French disco. Despite the lack of success for the single, they had articles about them published in NME and The Face magazines and caught the attention of Terry Hall, who invited the girls to sing on his group The Fun Boy Three's next single, which would break the girls into the mainstream and the rest was history. l0ij_tuSkxg Results So Far 30. The Wild Life \| Bananarama \| Avg: [5.4] Highest Rates: 7 [Johnkm, Acidburn, Lolhey] Lowest Rates: 3 [Dandystar, Pippa] At the #29 mark is "The Wild Life", released on November 1984 and was included on the American film of the same name. The song was written in two days by the girls themselves and was added to the re-release of their 2nd self titled album. The song peaked at #70 on the USA Billboard charts and was the album's final single there, it wasn't given a UK release, "Hotline To Heaven" was released over there instead. Tripping On Your Love \| Pop Life \| Avg.[5.818] Highest Rates : 7.5/7 [Acidburn, Kellyann, Bartsimpson] Lowest Rates : 3 [fgiboy2511] At #28 we have the first of the 90's era singles to drop "Tripping On Your Love", released in August 1991 as the 4th and final single from their 5th studio album "Pop Life" and is considered their biggest commercial flop by missing the UK top 75 by peaking at #76, and this also marked another end of an era as new recruit Jacquie O'Sullivan left the group after 4 years and only one album and their long time manager Hilary Shaw also quit. This was originally intended to be released as the album's 2nd single, but was delayed in favour of (Preacher Man & Long Train Running) and promotion for this song was very poor due to Sara's pregnancy and plus coming 4 months after the last single, expectations for this weren't very high, despite marking a new direction for the girls and re-recorded from it's original album form using acid house, south African rap and Caribbean music. Rough Justice \| Bananarama \| Avg.[6.208] Highest Rates: 9 [Acidburn, Kellyann] Lowest Rates: 2 [fgiboy2511] At #27 is "Rough Justice" released in May 1984 as the third single from their 2nd album "Bananarama" and was one of their several songs that addressed serious topics, in this case children, poverty, starvation and innocent bystanders and in the music video it shows the girls preparing for a TV appearance, but end up hijacking a news broadcast to address their concerns about the world. The song was a moderate success in the UK reaching #23, not as the successful as the album's previous 2 singles, but still had a decent run on the charts lasting 7 weeks. [6.416] Highest Rates: 10 [Acidburn] Lowest Rates : 3 [AH Gold] At #26 is another ballad single from the girls "A Trick Of The Night" released in January 1987 as the 4th and final single from their 3rd album "True Confessions" . The song's lyrics are directed towards a friend who went to the big city to seek fame and fortune but ended up becoming a rent boy. For it's UK release the song was given a remix and had two music videos for it, while the American and Europe got the far superior album version video, the UK release got delayed until February and was featured on the BBC programme "In The Deep End" where Paul Henley had to master the art of directing a music video and the song was given an upbeat remix by Pete Waterman, the girls hated the final product. More Than Physical \| True Confessions \| Avg.[6.583] Highest Rates: 11 [Lolhey], 10 [Acidburn] Lowest Rates: 2 [fgiboy2511] At #24 is another "TC" era single to drop, leaving only one left is "More Than Physical", released in August 1986 as the 3rd single from their 3rd album "True Confessions" and was one of two tracks produced by Stock Aitken and Waterman on the album and was given a Hi-NRG dance remix, in order to capitalize on the success of their previous single "Venus". But despite heavy rotation and a sexy music video it didn't match the success by peaking at #41 on the UK singles chart and peaking at #73 on the USA charts. [6.833] Highest Rates: 10 [Johnkm, AH Gold] Lowest Rates: 2 [fgiboy2511] At #23 is "More, More, More" released in March 1993 and was their final UK single of the 90's, taken as the 3rd and final single from their 6th album "Please Yourself" and was pointlessly remixed from it's far superior album version, titled the Dave Ford mix. As you may or may not know that this was originally a 70's smash hit for Andrea True Connection and has been covered many times through the years, the most recent was Rachel Stevens who had a top 3 hit with it in the UK in 2004. Bananarama retained the disco feel of the original but added a second verse and managed to reach #24 on the UK charts. The album was released shortly after and was critically panned and charted at a low #46 on the UK charts. This would also be their final single with London Records as they got dropped and last UK single for 12 years. [6.846] Highest Rates: 10 [Pippa, Kylie Jackson] Lowest Rates: 3 [AH Gold] At #22 is another Bananarama cover "Nathan Jones" originally sung by The Supremes in 1971 and covered by Bananarama in 1987 and released as a single in November 1988 as the 2nd and final single from their "Greatest Hits Collection". They first recorded for their 4th album "Wow" with the original line up, which was also featured on The Rain Man soundtrack, but when Siobhan was replaced by Jacquie O' Sullivan they re-recorded it into a completely new sound and became a success on the UK singles chart by reaching #15 and had a pretty decent chart run with 8 weeks in the top 40 and sold over a 100k throughout the X-Mas period, as well as helping the Greatest Hits album sell well throughout the period by reaching #3 and went on to earn a 3x Platinum disc. The music video even got nominated for Best Video at the Brit Awards, but lost out to Michael Jackson's "Smooth Criminal". Long Train Running \| Pop Life \| Avg.[6.916] Highest Rates: 10 [Popchartfreak] Lowest Rates: 4 [Kellyann, fgiboy2511] At #21 is yet another cover "Long Train Running" originally by The Doobie Brothers in 1973 and covered by Bananarama in 1991 and featured on their 5th album "Pop Life". The song was a last minute addition to the album as they were looking through Youth's (the producer) record collection and found the track and seeing as though they needed one more song for the album, they decided upon this and it was released as the album's third single in April 1991 and became a moderate hit for the girls by peaking at #30 on the UK charts, but fared better in Ireland by reaching #18 and cracked top 40 in Italy and also managed top 50 peaks in Germany and Belgium. Love Don't Live Here \| Viva \| Avg.[6.916] Highest Rates: 11 [Johnkm], 10 [Kellyann] Lowest Rates: 3.5 [dandystar] As we now enter the top 20 we say goodbye to the "Viva" era singles, "Love Don't Live Here" released in April 2010 as the 2nd and final single from that album and also their last commercial single released to date and written by the girls themselves. The song has become their lowest charting single to date peaking at #114 on the UK charts, which isn't a surprise given that there was no hype given for this and poor rotation and given the fact that the lead single didn't do well, it was surprising that there was a 2nd single released at all. The B-Side is a newly remixed version of their 1995 hit "Every Shade Of Blue" which was never released in the UK and was an added bonus for fans, and despite not experiencing much success, this has become a firm cult following amongst fans. r1EpxQXt-mE Results So Far 20. [7.208] Highest Rates: 10 [Johnkm] Lowest Rates: 4 [Acidburn, dandystar] At #19 is kind of a surprise for me, I honestly expected this to be a lot lower as I don't find this as one of their finer moments, quite bland and horrible, but Buzzjack have spoken and this did gain a lot of high rates, and is probably more well known because of the famous cover by Steps who had a smash hit with it in 1998 and due to that people got curious and decided to seek the original out. "Last Thing On My Mind" released in November 1992 and taken as the 2nd single from their 6th album "Please Yourself" and was also their 2nd song as a now twosome. The song was written by the girls themselves and produced by Mike Stock and Pete Waterman, who said that he was inspired by Mozart when coming up with the sound for this, but it saw very little success by peaking at #71 on the UK charts and along with the panned music video which features the girls in suits and has cited a Lesbian subtext to it, caused it to gain little to no play. Really Saying Something (Ft Fun Boy Three) \| Deep Sea Skiving \| Avg.[7.23] Highest Rates: 9 [Bartsimpson] Lowest Rates : 6 [Richie, fgiboy2511, Pippa, Lolhey] At #18 we finally get to one of their bigger hits "Really Saying Something" released in April 1982 and was the lead single from their debut album "Deep Sea Skiving" and third single overall. The song was originally sung by Motown group The Velvettes in 1964 and was a minor US Hit by peaking at #64. Bananarama scored a much bigger success with it by becoming their 2nd UK top 5 hit and having Fun Boy Three on backing vocals, returning the favour after they featured on their previous hit. The song quite successful outside the UK by reaching top 10 in Belgium and Ireland and top 20 in The Netherlands and became their 2nd entry on the Australian charts peaking at #74. It was also popular in the USA and received a lot of airplay on MTV but didn't dent the US Top 100, but did well on the dance charts by reaching #16. The song was given a fresh new remix in 2005 by Solasso and became massive on the club/dance scene and was even included on their ninth studio album "Drama". 09LF_IE-ph0 Results So Far 18. Released in February 1982 and it became a massive success by reaching #4 on the UK charts and brought a lot of attention to the girls and they ended up getting signed to London Records. Move In My Direction \| Drama \| Avg.[7.708] Highest Rates: 10 [Acidburn, Kellyann] Lowest Rates: 3 [Fgiboy2511] At #15 is "Move In My Direction" which became the girls first UK release in 12 years and highest charting hit in 16 years by peaking at #14, despite being placed at #9 on early midweeks, it however slipped down by the end of the week, which is a shame, but still managing top 20 hits in 3 decades is still quite brilliant. Released in July 2005 and was the lead single from their ninth studio album "Drama" and the first to be released on new record label A&G Records. The song was also became their first to chart in several countries in several years and to date is their highest charting hit and only top 20 hit as a duo. I Can't Help It \| Wow \| Avg.[7.833] Highest Rates: 10 [Acidburn, Lolhey] Lowest Rates: 4 [Fgiboy2511] At #14 is one of my many personal faves "I Can't Help It" released in December 1987 as the 3rd single from their 4th album Wow, except in the USA where it was released as the 2nd single following "I Heard A Rumour". This also marks the last Bananarama single to feature Siobhan who announced that she was leaving shortly after this was released, and even in the music video it seems that she's very much left out due to her pregnancy at the time. This also further promoted their sexier image that they had going at the time, which Siobhan hated as she felt that she was becoming a parody of herself. This became a hit just like all the singles from the album by reaching the UK top 20 becoming their 9th in total and also hit top 20 in Belgium and top 30 peaks in Australia, Netherlands and Spain, while peaking in the US Top 50. 6_dtG1arNhc Results So Far 14.
