Shawn Mendes' 'Handwritten' Debuts at No. 1 on Billboard 200 Chart
By Keith Caulfield | April 22, 2015 10:52 AM EDT Sixteen-year old Shawn Mendes has grown from Vine stardom to topping the Billboard 200 chart, as his debut full-length album Handwritten arrives at No. 1. The set, which was released on April 14 through Island Records, starts with 119,000 units earned in the week ending April 19, according to Nielsen Music. The Billboard 200 chart ranks the most popular albums of the week based on multi-metric consumption, which includes traditional album sales, track equivalent albums (TEA) and streaming equivalent albums (SEA). Traditional album sales comprised the bulk of Mendes’ album launch with 106,000 copies sold. It also bows at No. 1 on the Top Album Sales chart. Mendes is the youngest artist to have a No. 1 album on the Billboard 200 chart in nearly five years. The last younger artist with a No. 1 was Justin Bieber on the May 29, 2010-dated chart, when his My World 2.0 was in its fourth and final week at the top. (Bieber was 16 years and 2 months old at the time -- younger than Mendes, who is 16 years and 8 months old.) Mendes tops the Billboard 200 following the top five success of his self-titled EP, which debuted and peaked at No. 5 last year. It sold 48,000 copies in its first week and has sold 101,000 to date. Mendes also notably opens at No. 1 without the support of an airplay hit – none of his songs have reached Billboard’s airplay charts. However, the born-from-the-Web act has unsurprisingly made a splash on the Billboard + Twitter Top Tracks chart. On that tally, which measures the week’s most shared songs on Twitter, Mendes has logged three top 20 hits, with “Life of the Party” reaching No. 1. He’s also climbed as high as No. 15 on the Social 50 chart, which tracks the most active artists on social networking sites (like Twitter, Facebook, YouTube and Instagram). Although Mendes hasn’t dented an airplay survey yet, that doesn’t mean radio stations have entirely ignored his songs. His single “Something Big” was played on six mainstream top 40 stations in the most recent tracking week (for a total of 81 plays). Its music video has done steady business on YouTube, garnering nearly 14 million global views since its release five months ago. Mendes’ Handwritten is the second No. 1 album for Island Records in 2015, following Fall Out Boy’s American Beauty/American Psycho (released on DCD2/Island). Last week’s No. 1 album, the Furious 7 soundtrack, slips to No. 2 with 79,000 units (down 29 percent). After five weeks on sale, the set has sold 127,000 copies. It has outsold the three previous Fast and the Furious soundtracks: 2013’s Fast & Furious 6 (80,000), 2011’s Fast Five (94,000) and 2009’s Fast & Furious (69,000). Before that was 2006’s Fast and The Furious: Tokyo Drift, with 235,000. Country diva Reba McEntire bows at No. 3 with Love Somebody (62,000 units), notching her ninth top 10 album. Her previous set, 2010’s All the Women I Am, debuted and peaked at No. 7 with first week sales of 64,000. Over on the Top Country Albums chart, Love Somebody debuts at No. 1, marking the 12th chart topper for McEntire. Love Somebody is the first album release for the Nash Icon Music label, which signed McEntire to a recording deal last year. Nash Icon is a joint venture between Big Machine Label Group and Cumulus Media. Rapper Tyler, The Creator starts at No. 4 with his quasi-surprise release Cherry Bomb (58,000 units). The album was announced on April 8, with a release date of April 14, but it bowed slightly earlier than expected via digital retailers on April 13. The physical version of the album started arriving in stores on April 17. Traditional album sales equated to 51,000 of the set’s overall unit start. Of the 51,000 sales, downloads comprised 49,000, while the physical version of the album sold nearly 2,000 copies. Tyler, The Creator’s last album, 2013’s Wolf, debuted and peaked at No. 3 off an 89,000 sales start. Rock band Halestorm collects the fourth and final debut in the new top 10, as its Into the Wild Life launches at a career-high No. 5 with 56,000 units. The band also celebrates its best sales week ever for an album, as the new set sold 52,000 copies (well beyond their previous best week, when 2012’s The Strange Case Of… debuted with 24,000 sold). As for the rest of the latest top 10: the Fifty Shades of Grey soundtrack slides 3-6 (43,000 units; down 9 percent), Taylor Swift’s 1989 falls out of the top five for the first time, dipping 5-7 in its 25th chart week (38,000; down 13 percent), and Sam Smith’s In the Lonely Hour descends 6-8 (37,000; down 13 percent). Ed Sheeran’s x is steady at No. 9 with (36,000; down 9 percent) and Drake’s If You’re Reading This It’s Too Late falls 8-10 (35,000; down 12 percent). It was only the ninth album to spend its first 24 weeks in the top five since the chart combined its separate mono and stereo listings into one all-encompassing tally in 1963. — Little Big Town, Pain Killer – No. 17 — Following the country quartet’s performance of its song “Girl Crush” on the 50th Academy of Country Music Awards (April 19), the single’s parent album Pain Killer flies 58-17 with 136 percent overall unit gain. The album sold 11,000 copies last week — up 165 percent — to its best sales frame since last November. Its No. 17 rank is its highest placing since its debut week (dated Nov. 8, 2014) when it arrived at No. 7. As for “Girl Crush” itself, the song logged the largest sales week for a country track in 2015: it sold 97,000 downloads (up 126 percent). — Dance Gavin Dance, Instant Gratification – No. 32 — The rock band claims its first top 40 album as Instant Gratification arrives at No. 32. The group also claims its biggest sales week ever, as the album sold 15,000 in its first week. — Sabrina Carpenter, Eyes Wide Open – No. 43 — The latest Disney Channel actor-turned-Disney Music Group recording artist has arrived on the Billboard 200: Sabrina Carpenter. The 15-year old actress/singer, who stars in the TV series Girl Meets World, debuts at No. 43 with her first full-length album, Eyes Wide Open. (It bows with 12,000 equivalent album units moved in the week ending April 19, according to Nielsen Music.) The Hollywood Records set follows her debut EP, Can’t Blame a Girl For Trying, which reached No. 16 on Heatseekers Albums last year and has sold 17,000 copies. — Dierks Bentley, Riser – No. 61 — The country star performed the album's title track on the 50th Academy of Country Music Awards on April 19, sparking the set's 91 percent unit gain and jump from No. 145 to No. 61. The song tallies a 1,801 percent gain to 4,000 downloads sold. — Earl Sweatshirt, I Don’t Like Shit, I Don’t Go Outside – No. 73 — Following a month of digital exclusivity, the album was released on CD on April 14, thus prompting its overall 207 percent unit gain (to 7,000 for the week). It re-enters at No. 73. — Daryl Hall / John Oates, The Very Best of Daryl Hall John Oates - No. 79 — Sale-pricing in the iTunes Store aid the set's overall 246 percent unit increase (and re-entry at No. 79). The album surpassed 1 million in total sales in January. — Beth Hart, Better Than Home - No. 133 — The singer/songwriter collects her first non-collaborative chart entry since 2000, as Better Than Home enters with 5,000 units.
