We can announce that The BRIT Awards with MasterCard will take place on Wednesday 24th February 2016, with Ant & Dec returning to host the show!

The award-winning pair took over hosting duties this year, bringing their unique humour and presenting prowess to the evening’s entertainment (not to mention leaving a lime on stage during Taylor Swift's performance...) The show will once again take place at The O2, London and broadcast live on ITV.

Ant and Dec said “We're really excited to be invited back to host The BRIT Awards 2016. In all honesty we only intended to do it for one year but had such a good time we are thrilled to be doing it again. Both of us are looking forward to what will be an incredible night, and we can't wait to celebrate the achievements of British music once again.”

BRIT Awards Chairman Max Lousada added: "We're delighted to welcome Ant and Dec back to host the BRITs next year. They played a huge role in the success of this year's event and we’re all looking forward to another great show in 2016."

Next year’s event will look to build on the huge accomplishments of the 2015 show, which saw over a million extra viewers year on year on ITV and celebrated its biggest digital show to date with a record-breaking 7.8million tweets globally on the night.

More than 24million people have watched BRITs content on our YouTube channel, and music sales were exponentially boosted from the show, with the following week’s Top 5 Albums all by BRITs performers and winners including Sam Smith, Ed Sheeran, Royal Blood and Paloma Faith.

A tremendous £500k was raised for the War Child charity from all of the activity around the 2015 BRITs, including the charitable donation from Google Play who were this year’s official download and audio streaming partner and BRITs Week, which hosted a series of incredible live shows in the week leading up to the main event through a partnership between the BPI and AEG. During this week War Child hosted “Passport Back to the Bars” and their annual War Child BRIT Awards concert, which saw chart toppers Take That perform at the London O2 Shepherd’s Bush Empire. This activity recently won the charity a National Fundraising Award.

With Max Lousada remaining Chairman and acclaimed stage designer Es Devlin returning to create yet another eye-catching stage set, The BRITs 2016 is set to once again be the biggest and best celebration of British music and and the most prestigious night in the UK music calendar.

As much as I love them, I hope Ant & Dec don't do a James Cordon and return for a further two years afterwards. It's nice to get a bit of variety in!

Pam Hogg as been revealed as the designer for the awards statues that will be given out during the ceremony. Each category has its own design to make it unique for the winner.

Posted by: Joe. Nov 23 2015, 11:07 PM

I really hope Years & Years and Little Mix get best group nominations, Lana for international female. And that Adele takes all the awards Jess Glynne would have potentially won (other than breakout).

Jack Garratt will easily be the Critic's Choice Award winner, never even heard of the other two!

Posted by: Hadji Nov 24 2015, 03:57 PM

BRIT Awards 2015 was their only compilation which failed to top the compilation chart

Start getting excited because ‘The BRITs Are Coming’ on 14 January 2016! The exclusive BRITs nominations launch show will be filmed at ITV studios and broadcast on ITV later that evening.

We’ll be revealing the BRITs 2016 nominations shortlist and presenting 2016’s Critics’ Choice winner, Jack Garratt, with his trophy, so there’ll be lots to celebrate!

Performing at the launch alongside Jack will be Jess Glynne and Years & Years, who were nominated for last year’s Critics’ Choice award.

Adele has been confirmed as the first artist to perform at The BRITs. Here's hoping for another iconic spectacle.

'The BRITS are Coming' launch party (along with the nominations) is this Thursday night on ITV2 at 10.30, hosted by Laura Whitmore. I should think Years & Years and Jess Glynne will be nominated for quite a bit, likewise Little Mix should be up for Best Single with 'Black Magic'.

That's not a question because it's based on sales and they qualify. I think they should be up for best group, too.

Posted by: Serg Mix Jan 9 2016, 08:12 PM

I think Black Magic could be up for Best Video. But I am not an expert.

Posted by: Froot. Jan 9 2016, 08:31 PM

Best video is normally based on the amount of views so with 130m, I think it has a good chance!

Posted by: Cameron Jan 9 2016, 08:44 PM

Is best video not voted for on twitter though? so 1D will win laugh.gif

Also, what random award will be made up for One Direction this year?

They may get some kind of "outstanding contribution to music" as it could be their goodbye for a while.

Posted by: Joe. Jan 11 2016, 02:58 PM

I wouldn't be surprised if David Bowie is nominated and possibly wins best male and best album, now. He managed to get a nomination for his last album didn't he?

Posted by: Froot. Jan 11 2016, 03:14 PM

He was nominated for Album of the Year and he won Best British Male. That was the year after 'The Next Day' was released though so I'm not sure what will happen for this year.

No doubt there will be a special feature on him this year though.

Posted by: Joe. Jan 12 2016, 02:54 PM

Bowie tribute confirmed.

Posted by: Mart123 Jan 13 2016, 10:33 PM

Who do we think is going to sweep the nominations tomorrow ?

Think Adele will be nominated for a few , along with Florence , years and years , Jamie Lawson !! Really hope Leanne la havas gets some recognition too !!

Posted by: mdh Jan 13 2016, 10:35 PM

Adele will presumably sweep the floor, and Jess Glynne will do well too.

Posted by: Mart123 Jan 13 2016, 10:36 PM

Think Jess will get a few but don't think she will win on the night !!

Justin and Taylor for International Artists wub.gif

Posted by: Dan_ Jan 13 2016, 10:49 PM

Adele will win nearly everything she is eligible for.
Jess Glynne will win Best Newcomer.
Justin Bieber will win Best International Male.
James Bay will win Best Male.
An award will be made up and One Direction will win it.
Florence will win something.
Not sure on International Female as there haven't been any major releases in the past year from those unless I forgot someone?

I feel the same. The only ones I can think of are Lana Del Rey and possibly Carly Rae on critical merit.

God it's hard to think of five successful international groups! laugh.gif I agree Major Lazer will probably be there, likely Fall Out Boy too, maybe Fifth Harmony?

Would be nice if Bring Me the Horizon were nominated for Best Group given they've had their most successful era yet and it would be nice for rock to be represented by someone other than the Foo Fighters for a change. tongue.gif

Also would be great if Carly could get a nomination for Best International Female given how critically acclaimed her album is.

Yeah I'd say it was still a pretty interesting choice; there's still something very mysterious about him despite the few performances he's done (for instance, he didn't join Graham Norton on the sofa after his performance) which is part of the appeal.

On a separate note, pretty please can Madonna be up for Best International Female?

can Bowie's album be nominated or is the cut 31 Dec 2015??

hope Lana wins best international female, the album is kinda dead so could do with some promo like winning this smile.gif

guess The Weeknd will win best international male, I'd prefer Hozier but alas...

Adele Adele Adele.

Amy Winehouse for British Female, are they being serious?

Oops at the Little Mix snub for Group, I think they might have got in there instead of One Direction if it hadn't been their last year.

I don't know how Video is being decided this year but Runnin HAS HAS HAS to win, the others really cannot compare to it.

Posted by: lewistgreen Jan 14 2016, 06:17 PM

Nominations for British Video will be open to voting from tonight during the Launch Show.

Shame Little Mix aren't in Best Group and really nice but shocking to see Amy Winehouse there heart.gif

Posted by: 🙄🙄🙄 Jan 14 2016, 06:18 PM

I'm shocked Little Mix were snubbed for British Group :/

I mean they've sold more than almost everyone in that category! I hope Years & Years win.

Posted by: Defaze Jan 14 2016, 06:22 PM

One Direction over Little Mix is so frustrating. 2015 was huge for them, they really should've got a nom beyond the automatic qualifiers for best single and video.

Posted by: Jonjo Jan 14 2016, 06:23 PM

Yeah the snubbage for Little Mix in the groups is ridic but was to be expected. Apparently you have yo be male to be in the best group category! ph34r.gif

Posted by: Jack Jan 14 2016, 06:24 PM

Has Amy Winehouse released anything this year?! Like ... are they for real? I don't get it. They could have had Ellie Goulding nominated in her place.

Posted by: Chez Wombat Jan 14 2016, 06:26 PM

Quite a solid set of nominations! Very nice to see acts like Aphex Twin, Courtney Barnett, Foals & Tame Impala get a look in. Amy Winehouse's nom is...questionable, even posthumously, there was nothing released outside of the film soundtrack. Strange that Years & Years aren't up for breakthrough yet James Bay is as well.

International Female & Group looks the most interesting to me, can't call who will win out of either! (If Meghan Trainor wins the former, I will silently die. Also I had no idea Major Lazer were a group lol).

I'm not too surprised at the snubbage for Little Mix, they're not really the sort of act the Brits traditionally go for, they're the sort of act that would need to prove themselves a lot to be up for that.

Posted by: Froot. Jan 14 2016, 06:26 PM

There was only the soundtrack to the film: https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Amy_(soundtrack).

I think it's a ridiculous nomination and quite insulting to other females who have released stuff over the past year.

Posted by: Noahspike Jan 14 2016, 06:30 PM

I feel like Laura Marling must be very well connected or something laugh.gif! This is her fourth nomination for British Female since 2011 (having won that year).

Interestingly, Florence (with 'Ceremonials') and Coldplay (with 'Mylo Xyloto') lost out to Adele in Album of the Year back in 2012, and it's almost certain that history will repeat itself. Florence should really get off her release schedule if she knows what's good for her!

Posted by: Bjork Jan 14 2016, 06:31 PM

if there was a shortage of female singers, I would understand but that's not the case, Ellie Goulding should have taken the place

the female international is the most interesting one, hope Lana or Bjork get it

Posted by: MusiqqisuM Jan 14 2016, 06:31 PM

I can't predict who will win until i know the voting process for each category. Obviously social media friendly/younger acts like 1d and Little Mix benefit from fan voting categories...

I'm assuming album of the year is decided by a panel. That's surely the most obvious category with Adele walking it. Jamie XX got critical acclaim but I just can't see him beating Adele. I think album of the year and best female for Adele are in the bag for her and her name currently being engraved on the trophy.

Posted by: MusiqqisuM Jan 14 2016, 06:36 PM

Always makes me chuckle when I see BRIT nominations and only 10 categories when you look at the GRAMMYs and it's like hundreds.

Posted by: Cameron Jan 14 2016, 06:36 PM

These nominations are quite embarrassing and very laughable.

Posted by: pippa Jan 14 2016, 06:48 PM

Olly Murs snubbed for Best British Male once again pirate.gif

Posted by: Liаm Jan 14 2016, 06:52 PM

The nominations are such shambles.... I think Amy Winehouse being up for best female is utterly ridiculous, I mean yes there is a bit of a shortage but Marina, Ellie and Ella Eyre for example are all right there - I'm especially baffled at Ellie not being nominated. British music hasn't been the absolute best this year but they're really scraping with some of these, I've literally never even remotely heard of Father John Mistry.

Of course Adele will win best female and best album, apart from that (which are deserved within her categories) I'm pleased to see Courtney Barnett nominated. I honestly hope Black Magic (or Hello/King) has a chance at best single, best video will be 1D I imagine, again.

Posted by: lewistgreen Jan 14 2016, 06:54 PM

The 'International Male' category always has to provide that WHO?! moment with one of their nominees. Absolutely no idea who Father John Misty is either laugh.gif

Posted by: tom03 Jan 14 2016, 06:58 PM

Eagles of Death Metal probably have International Band wrapped up. Always amuses me when people say that certain acts should be nominated over others caused they've sold more, since when has it been the best selling acts, in that cause Bob the Builder would have won Best British Male in 2000!

Posted by: #psychic7 Jan 14 2016, 06:59 PM

Father John Misty's (used to be in Fleet Foxes to give a bit more background~) album got a ton of acclaim so him getting a spot is understandable imo. Unlike the Amy Winehouse & U2 nominations- wtf? laugh.gif

Posted by: Cremey Jan 14 2016, 07:02 PM

Yeah Father John Misty had a pretty big year, his album was released to pretty much universal acclaim.

Major Lazer for international group plz 🙌🏼

Posted by: Joe. Jan 14 2016, 07:05 PM

Even without my Stan boots on, Little Mix not being nominated for best group comes across as very snobby and slightly sexist. I know the sexist card is used very often, but they outsold all but one in that category on singles AND albums. They had much better performances (I know that's subjective, but come on) and their album was more well received critically than One Direction, Coldplay or Years & Years (don't get me wrong, I LOVE Y&Y and want them to win). They were the second highest selling group of 2015 in the UK and there's no reason they should have not been nominated.

I'm really pleased Lana Del Rey and Years & Years got nominations.

What's Ariana getting nominated? Her last album or Focus?

I do agree with this. I know that they aren't necessarily BRITs material but I think when they've had such a huge year, critically and commercially! It gets a bit boring when the same kind of acts are nominated and the same kind of acts are snubbed, but I guess that's the way award shows work.

One Last Time and Focus were both singles in 2015! I guess both of those. I'd like to see her win it if not Courtney Barnett but I'm set on Courtney <3

Posted by: JCM20 Jan 14 2016, 08:08 PM

Amy Winehouse has been dead for almost five years. Her getting a nomination purely because of her documentary film is basically a giant middle finger in the faces of Ella Eyre and Ellie Goulding

Posted by: Neil Jan 14 2016, 08:14 PM

The Brit nominations as ludicrous and irrelevant as ever. Fully understand, appreciate & support nominations not being based on sales/popularity but some of these are ridiculously obscure.

Posted by: Dobbo Jan 14 2016, 08:25 PM

Shame Ella Eyre didn't get any nominations but she did well at the MOBOs at least.

Wish You Were Mine getting a nom heart.gif Although don't like how 5 songs are nominated for both single & video. Like they just made the first list then got bored and couldn't be bothered to think of any more for the second.

I'd be pleased for 9 of the 10 Best Single Nominees to win (but I'm hoping King wins). Pleasantly surprised Wish You Were Mine was nominated.

Courtney Barnett <3 And Wolf Alice! Not that they're going to win but PLEASE.

Anyone but One Direction to win British Group. Alabama Shakes seem to be in it all the time just like Laura Marling, interesting. I guess the only complaint I have is that CHVRCHES deserved a nomination somewhere but I can understand them not being there. It looks like a good lot on the whole.

Personally I think both 1D & Little Mix should have been nominated. Foals could take the cut.

Great that Adele has swept the board not a surprise she should pick up best female and album easily !

Amy wine house ? Odd choice really , she only had the one OST can't remember it doing that well, Ellie Goulding or Leanne la Havas I would of chosen there.

Little mix , shame they weren't nominated for best group , but they may steal best single !

All in all , some really boring choices! Yawn at Jess glynne: overrated !

This! Little Mix deserved it they had a fantastic year with a brilliant album and 2 fantastic singles. And 1D still had a huge 2015. They may have lost a member but they continued their worldwide stadium tour, had a no.1 single and a no.1 album.

Yep, absolutely bizarre that Amy is up for British Female - I'm pretty sure this is the second posthumous nomination for this award having been nominated back in 2012/13.

As usual, there's a great chunk of obvious choices and of random choices, but there's some good acts in the Best Breakthrough (even if Jess will easily get that) and, even though I don't listen to his music really, nice to see Jamie xx get in there twice (I recall his album being very critically acclaimed).

Lol at the continued love for Laura Marling and Bjork! laugh.gif

Posted by: burbe Jan 14 2016, 11:35 PM

Surely Adele will win best album, female and single. I'm not sure she'll win Best Video though - they have to give One Direction something after all.

Let's face it, there is something seriously wrong with the world if we get to the point where we allow Meghan Trainor to get a nomination for best international female but not Carly Rae Jepsen. We have all big time screwed up as a human race.

1D won't get British group I'm sure this isn't the first time they've been up for this. Sadly they'll easily bag the video award

I think Coldplay will get British group as I can see Adele getting album and female.

That's why I asked about Ariana. She hasn't had a new album. My Everything was released in 2014, so if they wanted to nominate her for that era, she would have had a nomination last year and you don't get nominated twice for the same era. If that were the case Taylor Swift would have been nominated again as she released Style, Bad Blood, Wildest Dreams and Out of the Woods this in 2015.

I guess she's being nominated for Focus alone, as One Last Time was the last album. All will make sense if she's announced as a performer and they wanted to give her a nod.

Tbh, Madonna should be getting a nomination in that category. She gave the Brits much world-wide relevancy last year with her cape fail.

Why shouldn't Meghan get nominated for best international female? I wouldn't be surprised if she won and she deserves to win, she's had an incredible year worldwide, five top 15 hits in the USA and three top 3 singles in the UK. I would be baffled if she never got a nomination.

16 shocking snubs according to Digital Spy: http://www.digitalspy.com/music/feature/a780099/brit-awards-2016-the-16-most-shocking-snubs-at-this-years-show/

Maybe I'm biased here but I do agree Madonna should have been up for Best International Female. The majority of critics agree that her album is the best in a decade and her tour has also been highly praised which I think puts her in a better position than some others in that category. Carly Rae Jepsen too - again, her album has been praised to the highest high and she's proven herself capable of being so much more than a bubblegum pop one-hit-wonder; that's surely what the BRITs should be about: celebrating acts who manage to develop and grow.

Not so fussed on the snubs for Muse and Mumford & Sons - both acts have been nominated many a time before and it's fair to say their latest outputs don't quite compare to ones before. You could stick Disclosure in that group too.

Posted by: Joe. Jan 15 2016, 05:28 PM

I agree about both Liam. I think Madonna's album and tour sold enough to consider her a success. And she's as iconic as ever. She had more people talking about the Brits than ever last year. Carly Rae had probably the most critically acclaimed album of the last few years, too.

Why is obscurity not a reason to nominate someone?

Posted by: ML Hammer95 Jan 16 2016, 08:12 PM

Such a let-down that UK rap and grime has been ignored again, especially after the massive year of success we had!

Skepta or Stormzy could have nominated for Best Male, Know Me From or Queens Speech 4 nominated for Best Video and any one of Shutdown, Man Don't Care, Shut Up or Freak Of The Week nominated for Best Single. Kendrick Lamar got a nomination in the International category so why can't we recognise our own talent?

The list of nominations is, as ever, very beige and barely represents our musical culture right now.

Posted by: Froot. Jan 16 2016, 08:15 PM

Well, that category doesn't exist, but those two horrors are definitely the two worst songs by British artists in 2015.

Stormzy has expressed his disappointment that grime hasn't been supported by the BRITs: http://www.digitalspy.com/music/brit-awards/news/a780949/stormzy-isnt-happy-with-the-brit-awards-for-snubbing-grime-music/

I agree that it's been a good year for grime/hip-hop but it's hard when they only have one standout song per artist and the Best Single nominations are decided on sales. I'd say someone like Fetty Wap would be deserving of a Best International Male nomination though given the cross-over appeal of 'Trap Queen' and '679' and his features on other songs.

This. The grime market does make up a large proportion of popular music these days so its only fair that they represent this more in the nominations. Stormzy should have been up for Best British Male in my eyes (not biased). They should try and represent more genres than just commercial songs and songs everyone knows because they get hammered on Heart FM all day laugh.gif

"If I get another chance to

Posted by: Joe. Feb 6 2016, 04:06 PM

Adele is performing for the second time. Little Mix, Justin and Rihanna will bring big performances. Kanye, Taylor and Madonna were the only ones I were looking forward to last year and one of them got dragged off the stage and the other had their whole song censored.

Posted by: Froot. Feb 6 2016, 04:11 PM

I think it's a great line-up as they've mainly been the biggest artists of the last year. Then Rihanna is of course one of the biggest music artists of the last decade.

Maybe it would have been nice to see a couple of smaller acts to perform to help boost their profile but it depends on how you view the awards.

Oh god it is, I had no idea, I guess Someone Like You just eclipses everything else!

Rolling in the deep 2012 - Is that when she gave the finger? Surely that song was really old by then, it was out before Someone Like You which was performed the year before.

Posted by: sammy01 Feb 6 2016, 06:14 PM

It is certainly the best line up for a long time. The Brits usually get 1 or 2 absolute A-listers, this year they have 4 in Adele, Rihanna, Coldplay and Justin, plus a good supporting cast to go with it.

Posted by: T Boy Feb 6 2016, 06:27 PM

I guess the reason I'm the weirdo here is because as much as these are A listers, I don't actually like any of them.

Posted by: Jonjo Feb 7 2016, 12:51 AM

I'm so excited this year. The performers are really well thought out! Obviously I'm excited mostly for Little Mix to hopefully show people who wouldn't usually take notice of them, that they are more than "just a group who came from X Factor" and hopefully branch out to a wider audience a bit. For me I find it a much bigger deal, because I feel like they've worked their way to this moment and worked so hard and valiantly for it. Whereas in the past, it's felt like most mainstream acts & artists have been given the slot by default?

But on the whole, they've got the performers spot on for me. I still think it's a waste that whoever wins the "Critics Choice" award doesn't get to perform, as I truly believe just one performance on the show could really help their career!

Posted by: mdh Feb 7 2016, 09:23 AM

That's such a shame, King was easily the best video remaining. I can't comment on Jessie J's as I've not seen it but Adele's and One Directions are nice but pretty uneventful. Little Mix's is good because at least it has a strong concept and the same goes for Ed's. But we all know that this is actually the Brit Award for most dedicated fans.

I know you don't like her but trying to make her out like she's some flop who hasn't done well when she really isn't is laughable she's had a decent enough career.

1) my surprise at her having dedicated fans is nothing to do with whether she's percieved as a flop and more to do with her being so horrific that it is difficult for me to understand why.

2) she's had one decent selling album. The other 2 were flops whether you choose to admit it or not.

This seems to suggest Rihanna and Drake will be performing Work: http://www.digitalspy.com/music/brit-awards/news/a784535/rihannas-brought-drake-to-london-is-she-putting-him-to-work-work-work-at-the-brits/

Is there any other reason for her to be in London? It seems a bit odd for her to come here and then not perform?

Posted by: ML Hammer95 Feb 24 2016, 12:48 PM

Can't take the BRITs seriously this year after the complete snub of our black talent. Genre and racial representation are a big issue, its a joke that none of Skepta, Stormzy, Krept & Konan etc. have been nominated.

I realise it's all down to sales and views but the BRITs hardly represent our culture in 2016.

Posted by: Jonjo Feb 24 2016, 12:58 PM

Why would they get nominated? Bar one hit each, what else have they achieved in the last year? I can't help but feel this whole charade against the Brits for not including Grime artists is just a poor attempt at trying to recreate the whole Oscars so black drama... None of the black British artists have done anything of note this year and not really "stood out", critically or commercially.

EDIT: And only 2 awards are based on either sales or views (British Single/Best Video).

Posted by: ML Hammer95 Feb 24 2016, 01:07 PM

Not critically acclaimed?? The Guardian chose 'Shutdown' as their song of the year. Krept & Konan got a No. 2 album and a hugely popular Top 10 single - surely that could translate to a Best Newcomer nomination? As for Stormzy, getting a grime freestyle into the Christmas Top 10 is a huge achievement.

Can't shake the feeling the nominations are chosen by suits in the boardroom rather than reflecting the people. Yes, the charts are there for that but not everybody has an iTunes or Spotify account!

http://m.noisey.vice.com/en_uk/blog/the-brit-awards-have-admitted-they-need-to-improve-diversity

Posted by: Joe. Feb 24 2016, 01:24 PM

Shutdown didn't sell enough, and best single is based entirely on that. None of these artists have made much of a mark other than one hit each at most. Maybe in the future, but there really wasn't enough to warrant nominations this time around, unfortunately. If Grime grows more though, who knows what could happen next year.

The real issue is BritsSoMale. A female group has never been respected by Brits enough to win 'Best British Group' in the history of the Brit awards and Little Mix excelled in every area this era, yet still weren't recognised, which is very snobby. It's a shame that they only got nominated for the default awards.

Posted by: liamk97 Feb 24 2016, 01:37 PM

I actually agree that the BRITs need to be more diverse and it will be a start for them to not just look at the big pop names in the charts. It's not like the Oscars where actors were snubbed because they were just not good enough, it's a case of certain music not being the most commercial sounding which leads to them not being as successful chart-wise and therefore not nominated, opposed to them not being good enough. For instance, if a hip-hop artist wanted to be nominated, they would have to have more pop hooks and probably a featured female artist for their song to be big, which isn't necessarily the same as being better.

It would also help if the singles/video categories were not based on sales/views for the point I've already raised: it means only the big acts get a look in and it doesn't really reflect what makes a good song or video. I mean, who watches the 'Flashlight' video and think it's one of the best videos of the year?

The BRITs should bring back the Best *insert genre* Act categories so that the less commercial but still critically acclaimed acts can get a look in. I usually dislike this sort of positive discrimination but, like I say, it's because acts are getting ignored because they're not commercial enough to get huge sales rather than they're just not good enough.

Posted by: Jonjo Feb 24 2016, 01:58 PM

I agree with all your points. Especially about the genre awards thing. Why did they scrap them in the first place? unsure.gif

I also don't think the "they need to stop looking at the big pop names" is a valid argument when they have the likes of Catfish & The Bottlemen, Wolf Alice, Aphex Twin, Laura Marling, Father John Misty etc.. all nominated for some of the main awards. None of which are particularly big pop names. In fact K&K and Stormzy are more popular, imo. I just don't see the work they've done as being anything ground breaking or anything particularly worthy of being nominated (I say this as a HUGE fan of 'Freak Of the Week', one of my favourites of last year!) I believe K&K will get a nomination or two one year. But I guess that falls into your point of them being snubbed due to music being more subjective.

But the Brits have been favourable of grime/hip hop artists in the past. Dizzee Rascal being the main name. Getting nominations even before his "real" commercial success and boost in 2008, wasn't he?

Posted by: Froot. Feb 24 2016, 02:08 PM

There does need to be a return of the genre-specific awards but I guess they just don't have time to fit them in. It's hard for it to cater for all genres currently due there not being much space available. Plus, even with the small amount of nominations available, there will be overlaps between these (e.g. Jess Glynne nominated for Female and Breakthrough).

Grime has had a massive rise in popularity and it is kind of becoming the new House (with a lot of people liking it purely because it is cool to do so) but I don't think there's a specific problem yet due to the limited nominations model. I think one of the problems with grime being recognised more widely is that it is VERY marmite, you either love it or absolutely hate it.

Posted by: ML Hammer95 Feb 24 2016, 02:13 PM

I don't think many of the nominated artists have made groundbreaking music this year, that's a subjective opinion. Although I agree Skepta, Stormzy & Krept & Konan didn't make especially groundbreaking material either, it was more the scale of critical and commercial success. Shutdown even impacted America with a co-sign from Drake and Kanye! This without 'selling out' and making dance-pop songs like Dizzee Rascal from 2008 onwards.

I agree they need more genre specific awards. Totally agree that need to represent artists whose music is limited commercially despite it's quality (not just Grime).

Well that's true, they're not all big pop names and the likes of Catfish and Wolf Alice are examples of good, deserving nominations, regardless of what one's opinion of them may be. My point was more to do with the obvious choices getting picked over acts that have grown and proven themselves - an example being One Direction getting nominated yet again despite their album, I don't think, getting particularly good critical acclaim in comparison to their previous albums which, amongst other things, suggests they've not really developed as an act. Whereas you take Little Mix who were snubbed yet have proven themselves more than just a flash in the pan kinda girl band and received a huge reception for 'Black Magic' and their album. Okay, Little Mix are still "a big pop name" but, like I say, the BRITs should show how music tastes and the industry evolves and how artists grow.

That's partly my reasoning for why grime and hip-hop should have been represented better as it's been a notably good year for it with Stormzy, Krept & Kronan, Skepta, Fetty Wap etc. all doing well. True, the BRITs may have represented different genres well in the past, but the nomination choices seem to be a lot more...conservative(?) in recent years.

Precisely, and that's what I mean about how hip-hop acts would have to resort to "selling out" to become particularly big and end up getting nominated, when in fact more commercial does not necessarily mean better quality, which is where the lack of diversity debate in regards to the BRITs is much different to that of the Oscars.

Posted by: JosephStyles Feb 24 2016, 04:32 PM

I feel like, beyond a couple of songs, grime is still quite a niche genre that just has a small number of very vocal fans. I don't really think someone like Stormzy is particularly deserving of a nomination for British Male for example over anyone else on the list, especially as he's not even released an album. Shut Up and Freak of the Week are the only two to cross over, the former was through a campaign which I must admit, was very well executed, and the latter was DJ Mustard produced and with a Jeremih feature. I don't think it's anything to do with commercial artists etc. I think someone like Fetty Wap should perhaps have been up for International Male based on his success last year but beyond that, I don't see any notable snubs.

Little Mix are most definitely a big snub from British Group I think, they've had their biggest album so far and it's a shame it's not been reflected in the noms. 1D's album was actually more critically acclaimed than their previous albums that I noticed, it got some very good reviews, so it's a fair nomination especially this year I think (LM's album has outsold it but Made In the A.M. is not miles behind). The noms this year seem pretty fair to me beyond maybe 3 or so fairly big names missing.

Posted by: burbe Feb 24 2016, 05:06 PM

I was very surprised to see Little Mix snubbed for Best Group - I'm not a fan but they deserve it based on their success in the past year.

If they put the show back on the BBC, they would instantly get an extra half-hour or so.

Posted by: Chez Wombat Feb 24 2016, 06:39 PM

I'm pretty sure a lot of the categories in the BRITS have the criteria of a full length album being released within the calendar year to be up for a nomination anyway, did any of these grime acts mentioned release an album at all in the last year? If they did , they'd still have quite a lot of competition, mainly as has been mentioned that the genre just isn't as commercial or widespread yet, even if it's made strides this year. I hate to talk like Michael Caine for the Oscars, but I do believe if the genre continues to grow and has a much more notable influence on the charts, then they will/or should start to recognise grime more, but as it stands I don't really think that any of the acts mentioned did quite enough to warrant a place over who has already been nominated (Amy Winehouse aside).

Also, Kendrick Lamar's up for International Male, and his genre is of a similar sound, so they don't ignore all black music.

Thanks for that insightful comment, worthwhile in the comfort of your own home but not sure it adds to the Brits discussion

Erm, just throwing my opinion out there since she's on every 15 mins? I fail to see how your comment adds to Brits discussion either since you're busy being the forum police...

I love Jess but she can't hit those high notes live can she?

Posted by: Taylor Jago Feb 24 2016, 08:42 PM

Ain't Got Far To Go is sounding really good!

Don't Be So Hard On Yourself wub.gif What an amazing song, still doesn't feel old.

Hold My Hand is also great, great to hear it!

Jess ;wub: Bit rough at times though!

Nice medley of her hits!

Posted by: Dan_ Feb 24 2016, 08:43 PM

Jess Glynne, Queen of Music heart.gif

great performance as always even if as always she can't do the high notes too well.

(omg we're getting 3 songs from her!!!)

Oh and I agree Coldplay were ropey. So is Jess Glynne tbh.

Jess Glynne is great but her voice sounds as if she's put her phone on vibrate and shoved it down her throat

Posted by: Ne Plus Ultra Feb 24 2016, 09:49 PM

Interesting tribute.

Posted by: Explozian Feb 24 2016, 09:49 PM

Does ANN just do mawkish celebrity tributes now? She's like the undertaker of pop. I was disappointed that she didn't come out in her HIV shirt.

Posted by: Steve201 Feb 24 2016, 09:49 PM

Love how Laura Marling is ALWAYS nominated for British female lol.

Bit sad people saying James Bay is MOR with a hat! You could say Calvin Harris for instance is Dance musics version of MOR!

Posted by: Ne Plus Ultra Feb 24 2016, 09:50 PM

Lorde doing the musical tribute. wub.gif

Posted by: T Boy Feb 24 2016, 09:51 PM

I'm glad Lorde still looks not a day over 47.

Posted by: burbe Feb 24 2016, 09:51 PM

Oh gosh.....Lorde.....

Well said!! *.*

This is a lovely Bowie tribute, Lorde doing him justice right now!

Lorde 💜💜

Posted by: mdh Feb 24 2016, 09:52 PM

Lorde is fantastic. Absolutely amazing.

Posted by: T Boy Feb 24 2016, 09:52 PM

I hate Lorde, but she's being fantastic here.

Posted by: Dan_ Feb 24 2016, 09:52 PM

great tribute performance from Lorde. And I liked the guy's speech as well. RIP Bowie sad.gif

Posted by: Luciano Feb 24 2016, 09:53 PM

Lovely tribute, as much as I despise Lorde.

Lorde smashing it!

Posted by: Liаm Feb 24 2016, 09:54 PM

Lorde was absolutely incredible, what a tribute wub.gif

Posted by: Ne Plus Ultra Feb 24 2016, 09:54 PM

Lorde killed it. That may be the best performance of the night, with Little Mix a close second.

Posted by: Jade Feb 24 2016, 09:55 PM

Oh my gosh that was outstanding. heart.gif Stole the show for me.

Posted by: Chez Wombat Feb 24 2016, 09:55 PM

That easily stole the show, never would've thought Lorde would be a good choice for that but she did that excellently.

Posted by: T Boy Feb 24 2016, 09:55 PM

That was so emotional, absolutely no self service, just a straight tribute to an absolute legend.

Posted by: Ultraviolence1989 Feb 24 2016, 09:55 PM

Fantastic tribute!

Posted by: Steve201 Feb 24 2016, 09:55 PM

Nearly crying at the end too, fair play to her!

Posted by: Taylor Jago Feb 24 2016, 09:56 PM

That was a great tribute from both Annie and Gary, and Lorde absolutely did Life On Mars? justice.

Posted by: gooddelta Feb 24 2016, 09:56 PM

Unexpected highlight with all the big names here, I hope that gives her a deserved profile boost, she's such a talent and deserves a long career.

Posted by: Froot. Feb 24 2016, 09:56 PM

That was an excellent tribute, I do think it worked better performing just one song. I was surprised at the choice of Lorde but she was fantastic!

Posted by: timjimlee Feb 24 2016, 09:56 PM

Performance of the night by a country mile!

Fantastic, tasteful tribute, great stuff, well done Lorde!

Posted by: burbe Feb 24 2016, 09:57 PM

I really hate Lorde, but that was a great tribute! So much better than the self-indulgent Grammys tribute.

Posted by: Jason Feb 24 2016, 09:57 PM

Chaka Khan to get the biggest Brit Awards effect. laugh.gif
Seriously, that Lorde version should go straight to the top 10 now. wub.gif

Posted by: Steve201 Feb 24 2016, 09:57 PM

Yeh sounded great - Life on Mars really is one of the best songs of all time!

Posted by: mdh Feb 24 2016, 09:59 PM

Has Adele performed yet??

Posted by: T Boy Feb 24 2016, 10:00 PM

Annie Lennox/Gary Oldman/Lorde- people who actually knew/were endorsed by Bowie. Not just some karaoke self indulgent wannabe.

Posted by: mdh Feb 24 2016, 10:00 PM

Posted by: Dan_ Feb 24 2016, 10:01 PM

yay for Tame Impala & Adele, Little Mix and Gary/Lorde have best performances of the night so far... although I did prefer the Nile/Gaga Grammy tribute
