Ascension for The XX this week as On Hold hits the top spot, pushing BlackPink down one place. It's The XX's first charter in several years, and probably their second #1 after Islands from back in the day - before I formally recorded charts. Apologies for not getting links up from last week, regular readers, some issues came up on my end that left me not really in the frame of mind to get it done. Getting back on track for this week though. Peking Duk and Elliphant elevate again this week, with the latter now doubling up in the top 10 – a surprise, as at the start of the year I was going off her in a big way. The Tapes, a new band, also zoom into the top 5, while just beyond it, Girl Blue continues her unlikely rise, reaching a new peak on her 8th week in the chart. I’ll be keeping an eye on her in 2017, for autumn maybe.
Elsewhere in the chart, Sabrina Carpenter drops right out from #5 after spending all of her first 5 weeks in the top 5. There’s a few new entries at the far end, notably from Lana Del Rey’s West Coast which tends to hover within my top tracks outside the top 40 a fair chunk of the time. It’s probably heading for its 3rd year running in my year-end top 100. I live on the west coast, what can I say?! How Does It Feel, Sticks and Horses and Alicia Keys’ wonderful Blended Family also re-enter this week.

There’ll be more on this lot and other chart moves in the next post – even if it’s just some links -, but for now, here for your viewing and inspirational pleasure is this week’s chart in full, covering up to the last week:

Mixed bunch this week. Near the end of the chart Kate Bush sees the first new entry from her new album. I first came across her music around Christmas time as well, I think perhaps three years ago, and I've been a fan ever since. Just in time for her random new release! This version of Never Be Mine comes from her 2014 live concert series Before The Dawn. The XX at the top are looking steady to hold it next week too; a strong lead for the comeback track.

New entries further down the chart come from Fifty Shades band Vaults, who've just released their full-length debut, Annabel Jones with Nebbra, on her second EP release, Giorgio Moroder with Karen Harding, Quiet Luke, Patty Crash, Gypsy & the Cat, and another from Wapaint's new album. Distortion by J Sutta also enters; an act I thought was a new indie girl at first but actually with a bit of research revealed herself to be 1/6th of the original Pussycat Dolls. Nicole Scherzinger eat your heart out. Re-entries this week also come from Bearcubs and Secaina Hudson, Bright Light Bright Light, and Lana Del Rey's criminally underrated West Coast.

And so to our links. The Spotify Playlist is also now updated for the week!

[34-14-8-7]

Decent budget on this one; aiming to be the Post to Be of 2016? [26-14]

Major Lazer didn't manage to really follow-up Light It Up, this is Nyla's attempt.

Here's hoping Lana can get some appreciation outside indie and superfan circles with her fourth era next year.

Annabel's second era this year yields her second chart hit, pleasantly surprised when that happens to acts who appear to be one hit wonders.

The meme has landed.

The second chart hit this year (third, if we're counting remixes) for Vaults.

And finally one that's been hovering around the lower reaches for a while and which I've been recommending to several folks. Karen Harding is a real success story.

Until next week!
