Hypocrates and Gold do not need to be that low IMO, I don't care for anything else here, other than Girls which is iconic as it mentions Girls Aloud.

5 more tonight.

Not huge losses still, other than Living Dead which I always thought was underrated. All these songs are worse than Gold that came last. I do love Electra Heart though, the part it plays on her most recent tour is rather iconic.

As much as I think Marina is amazing, innovative and interesting and is easily one of my favourite artists, this rate has reminded me how mediocre some of her filler is. Sitting right next to each other 'Rootless' and 'Sex Yeah' are both annoying moments on their respective albums for me and the next three songs are just meh for me. Luckily the quality races up in the top 25. (That's not to say that there aren't songs between 48 - 31 that I don't love.

Some massive Marina moments out now. Lotti loses TWO of her 11s before the top 15. Primadonna at 17 was a big shock to me, I had to recount it 100 times to make sure it wasn't an error. Shampaign and How To Be a Heartbreaker are two songs that are quite definitive for Marina. The former, Marina herself has said she hates, despite it being a highlight of TFJ for me. The latter, I find to be one of the most generic Marina songs of them all and am sad it's finished above Primadonna. In Savages, Marina goes political, in this fan favourite from FROOT, leaving just 4 songs from FROOT remaining.

Posted by: Froot. 4th January 2016, 12:10 PM

Yass at Primadonna being out, nowhere near her best mostly down to the lazy production during the verses for me.

Savages, Shampain & Homewrecker heart.gif

Better Than That is fast becoming a contender for best song on Froot.

Posted by: Noahspike 4th January 2016, 03:25 PM

'Shampain', 'Primadonna' and 'How To Be A Heartbreaker' are my least favourite of her singles (in that order) so I'm glad to see them miss the top 15. Annoying that her biggest hit is such a poor representative of what makes her so great, but at least that was sort of recognised here. And 'Shampain' actually gives me a headache - it's so terrible and I'm not even sure why. puke.gif

Also gutted to see Savages out at this point, one of the standout moments from Froot for me!

'Shampain', 'Homewrecker' from that section wub.gif also 'Primadonna' ofc and shocked it's out so low!

I REALLY REALLY wish i'd rated in this. My 11s would have been 'I'm A Ruin' and 'Lies' so hope I haven't hindered them too much and they smash regardless :'(

#15 Bubblegum Bitch
Average: 8.35

HIGH: Cody (10), Cameron (10), Lindsey (10), Mr_pmt (10), Liаm (10), princess_lotti (10), Froot. (10)
LOW: Henderella (3)

A clear favourite from Marina here, having it opening loads of her most recent shows and keeping it as part of the Electra Heart section over Power & Control, Radioactive and Teen Idle (for some of the time). I didn't initially see the greatness of the song, but hearing it again on the Neon Nature tour, it really was such a moment.

#14 Fear And Loathing
Average:8.52

HIGH: Froot. (11), 152chris (11), randomfurlong (11), Liаm (11), dandy* (11), Cremey (10)
LOW: Sean (4)

The scores were pretty average for this, until the very end of the rate when it received a flurry of 11s. I have to admit, I've never quite gotten this one the way others do. I remember it being one of the first things we heard from the Electra Heart era and being bitterly disappointed at the time. It is still an intense, powerful and clearly very popular track, making it as high as #14 in the rate.

#13 Teen Idle
Average: 8.52

HIGH: randomfurlong (11), Heezus Froot (11), Parallel Reality (11), Joe. (11), Cody (10), Liаm (10), Froot. (10)
LOW: Henderella (5), Sean (5)

Another track from Electra Heart, but this time one that I really love. Teen Idle is a huge album highlight for me, and I've always generally preferred up-tempo Marina. The chorus is like a nursery-rhyme, but the melody/lyrical combination make for something rather sinister. I really think this should have been pushed as a single.

#12 Lies
Average: 8.619

HIGH: Cremey (11), Cody (10), Liаm (10), Parallel Reality (10), Froot (10), 152chris (10), randomfurlong (10)

This always stood out as the firm fan favourite from Electra Heart, so I'm surprised, that it's finished lower than Power & Control. Marina uses this to close the Electra Heart section of the Neon Nature tour showing that there's still a lot of power in 'Lies'.

#11 Power & Control
Average:8.8

HIGH: Harry Flynn (11), Cody (11), Joe (10), Cameron (10), Sean (10), Heezus Froot (10), Froot. (10)

I'm quite shocked that this manages to scale the heights of #11, just missing the top 10! I always felt as if there was a lot of negativity towards this song for being a silly single choice and "killing" the Electra Heart Campaign. I always disagreed, it was a standout song on the album and one that I would have made a single, personally. It didn't get a massive push, really. Peaking with 2 weeks on the Radio 1 B-list and they butchered the best part of the song the "I am weeeeeak" interlude for the radio edit. I still get chills when I hear the incredible intro to this.

That was indeed another bloodbath for Electra Heart, leaving Marina's sophomore album with just 1 track, and a track that wasn't even on the standard album.

Posted by: Joe. 5th January 2016, 10:23 AM

Remaining we have:

Hollywood
I Am Not A Robot
Mowgli's Road
Obsessions
Oh No!

Radioactive

Blue
Froot
Happy
I'm A Ruin

Posted by: Froot. 5th January 2016, 10:43 AM

I don't think Power & Control should have been a single but that doesn't stop me loving the song. Sad to see most of those songs fall before the Top 10 really, especially Fear and Loathing.

Great Top 10 for the most part though, I perhaps wouldn't put Hollywood/Mowglis Road/Radioactive there.

Posted by: Colm 5th January 2016, 11:44 AM

Power and Control is deffo my fave from EH.

Hollywood is still pretty rubbish - I never understood its appeal. Oh No or I'm a Ruin to win, please.

How in the WORLD are all of these Electra Heart songs getting out and the pretty average "Happy" remains?

Posted by: Colm 5th January 2016, 12:37 PM

Happy is great. I love how she often adds more than one middle eight to a song, or an extra part to the chorus on Froot (the album). Happy starts off good and then gets better as it continues.

Posted by: Joe. 5th January 2016, 01:13 PM

I'm going to withhold the top 10 unless there's more comments.

Can't complain with that top 10! In an ideal world I'd swap out 'Blue' and 'Hollywood' for 'Lies' and 'Power & Control', but the former two are still deserving of their places and the latter two finished high enough.

Completely agree. I haven't heard 'Happy' in a while but I always interpreted it as having (what sounds like) a whole additional chorus that comes in towards the end. A beautifully captivating song structurally/lyrically/melodically and everything else. <3

I love the songs #12-14, I love 'Lies' and 'Teen Idle'. I do really enjoy all the songs left, but I'm hoping 'Mowgli's Road', 'Froot' and 'Radioactive' are in the top 5. I find 'Happy' very special too, and obviously, 'I'm A Ruin' is an anthem.

With the albums, I'm not surprised 'Electra Heart' finished last. The good tracks on the album are all very good, but the record is probably more hit and miss than the other two. I love 'Froot' because it's very cohesive and Marina put a lot of work towards the production of the album - But I love the themes in TFJ.

Personally I think the highs on Electra Heart are higher than Froot's, but FROOT doesn't have any songs as bad a some of what's on Electra Heart. I know this rate doesn't agree with me given what came last though...

There's something about the first few seconds of 'Happy' that I find really jarring, something that makes me want to skip it. But I fully agree with the claims made previously in the thread that it's a song that get's better and better as it goes on. It's a really beautiful, subtle, understated song and Marina sings it with effortless emotion. The only thing I might say is that it's maybe not the best choice of opener to the album, I'd personally have switched it with Froot.

This is one of the songs Marina is most known for, and the second biggest hit from The Family Jewels. I know this was a big reason in why Marina first sparked interest with a lot of people and it's not really difficult to see why. I Am Not A Robot is so elegantly written, has a hummably commercial chorus whilst being entirely unique in itself. 'Don't pick up the phone when it ring ring rings'.

For a lot of fans, I think the general initial reaction to Froot was WTF IS THIS. It was a really slow burner, and each one of its 27 choruses click with you at different points. But when every piece of this musical jigsaw finally fits together in your brain you come to realise that this is a genius piece of music, that only Marina could have made. My body is ready.

Froot is so close to becoming my REAL fav of hers. all of the songs on that album rly do creep up on you.

Posted by: Froot. 6th January 2016, 11:16 PM

I thought Froot would have been higher! ohmy.gif

#7 Blue
Average: 9.14

HIGH: Liаm (11), Kuki Sanban (11), Mr_pmt (11), Cody (10), Joe. (10), Cameron (10), Sean (10), Harry Flynn (10), Parallel Reality (10)

Winning the video of the year award at Popjustice, is Blue. A Happy song about being sad. The opposite of 'Happy'. The thing that makes Blue for me is it's production, which I absolutely love, especially the opening. This is the first of two songs from FROOT that I really think could have been moderate hits, and really sold the album. The second of these two is still to come.

Posted by: Colm 7th January 2016, 10:07 AM

Blue is good but coming after the first three songs on the album is a bit of a comedown. I sometimes skip it. It's better than Forget or Gold.

#6 Obsessions
Average: 9.22

HIGH: Liаm (11), dandy* (11), Henderella (11), Lindsey (10), Cremey (10), Tony (10), Froot. (10), randomfurlong (10)

Supermarket, oh what packet of crackers to pick? They're all the same, one brand, one name, but really they're not. Look, look, just choose something quick, people are staring, time to go quick in skin is on fire. Just choose something, something, something. Pressure overwhelming. Next minute I am turning out of the door, facing one week without food. A day, a day when things, things are pretty bad. Don't let it make you feel sad, the crackers were probably bad luck anyway Can't let your cold heart be free when you act like you've got an OCD...

Gah, there goes my would-be 11. sad.gif

Flawless commentary by the way. wub.gif

Posted by: mr_pmt 7th January 2016, 01:40 PM

I never really managed to get into 'Obsessions'. sad.gif

'Blue' became my favourite from FROOT after seeing the video, really sold it to me.

Posted by: Colm 7th January 2016, 01:51 PM

The middle part of Obsessions is still her best piece of music.

Posted by: ℒ𝓲𝓷⻤ 7th January 2016, 02:11 PM

I'm glad Happy made the top ten although I would have liked it to be a bit higher, pleased with Obsessions' placing too as it's one of my faves wub.gif

Top 5 predictions guys. What you want and what you think.

It's between:

Hollywood
I'm a Ruin
Mowgli's Road
Oh No!
Radioactive

Posted by: Rachel Spadzten 7th January 2016, 02:26 PM

Glad Happy is the bottom biggrin.gif

Blue could have been higher ideally.Great that Oh No and Radioactive made the top 5 yahoo.gif I can't see either winning though. I'm a Ruin will probably win seeing it seems to be the favourite from the stanners of the forum.

Posted by: Noahspike 7th January 2016, 02:28 PM

Want~

#1 Mowgli's Road
#2 Oh No!
#3 I'm A Ruin
#4 Radioactive
#5 Hollywood

Think (having not looked at the rating thread so I'm probably way off. I previously would have called 'Froot' as the winner)~

#1 Oh No!
#2 I'm A Ruin
#3 Hollywood
#4 Radioactive
#5 Mowgli's Road

Posted by: Joe. 7th January 2016, 02:29 PM

Earlier this year Popjustice users did a rate of the same songs, loads entered, more than 60 I believe (Less than 30 got involved here).

Interestingly, for comparison, this was their top 10:

1) I'm a Ruin
2) Oh No!
3) Radioactive
4) Numb
5) Primadonna
6) Froot
7) Teen Idle
8) Obsessions
9) I Am Not a Robot
10) Blue

Some very big differences.

Posted by: Froot. 7th January 2016, 02:46 PM

Want:

01. I'm a Ruin
02. Oh No!

03. Radioactive
04. Mowgli's Road
05. Hollywood

Froot/Fear and Loathing/I'm Not a Robot should have joined the Top 2 instead though

What I think will happen:

1. I'm A Ruin
2. Oh No!
3. Hollywood
4. Radioactive
5. Mowgli's Road

What I want to happen:

1. Mowgli's Road
2. Radioactive
3. Oh No!
4. I'm A Ruin
5. Hollywood

Posted by: Iz~ 7th January 2016, 03:16 PM

In some ways, I'm A Ruin would be great winning but it feels a bit soon? Hollywood probably out of the rest but I'd love it if Oh No or Mowgli's Road could.

I think I might have finally been able to get into Obsessions lately, so chilled and beautiful.

Posted by: Colm 7th January 2016, 04:49 PM

Hollywood - seriously overrated
I'm a Ruin - her best since TFJ
Mowgli's Road - Her second best
Oh No! - her Best
Radioactive - a lot better than when I first heard it

Posted by: mr_pmt 7th January 2016, 04:52 PM

That's a solid top 5, they're 5 defining Marina tracks and all brilliant.

Backing 'Radioactive' to win but don't mind if it doesn't.

Posted by: Colm 7th January 2016, 05:02 PM

I'd accept any of the 5 apart from Hollywood for a winner.

#5 Hollywood
Average: 9.42

HIGH: Kuki Sanban (11), Mr_pmt (11), Joe (11), Cameron (10), Henderella (10), Liаm (10), Viper (10), Cremey (10), Parallel Reality (10), Heezus Froot (10), 152chris (10)
LOW: Tony (4.5)

One of the definitive songs of my life's soundtrack. I have so many found memories of this song, and even though I find (my other remaining 11) I'm a Ruin to probably be a better song, there is a place in my heart that won't replace Hollywood. This is Marina's second biggest hit in the UK after Primadonna and just like the other sadly missed the top 10 by not very much.

Posted by: princess_lotti 7th January 2016, 06:58 PM

surprised Hollywood was #5! ohmy.gif

(Here's my predictions for the rest of the top 5, I'm a bit late kink.gif)

1. I'm A Ruin
2. Radioactive
3. Oh No!
4. Mowgli's Road

What I want:

1. I'm A Ruin
2. Mowgli's Road
3. Radioactive
4. Oh No!

All four are stunning songs though and I wouldn't mind any of them to win!

Posted by: mr_pmt 7th January 2016, 07:38 PM

'Hollywood's slightly tired on me over time, but it's still an amazing song. This song and the video are what first drew me to her, it's a tour de force.

Posted by: Joe. 7th January 2016, 07:48 PM

Oh yes, shout out to the incredible Hollywood video.

Dropping #4 to #1 like...

#4 I'm a Ruin
Average: 9.59

HIGH: princess_lotti (11), Cameron (11), Joe. (11), Cody (10), Lindsey (10), Liаm (10), dandy* (10), Kuki Sanban (10), Cremey (10), Tony (10), Parallel Reality (10), Froot. (10), 152chris (10), randomfurlong (10)

I don't want to take anything away from the amazing songs remaining in this rate, but this really is AT LEAST top 3 Marina and the Diamonds. It's an absolutely stunning, anthemic power ballad, with a theme that I really feel I identify with, even if I haven't necessarily experienced the same things Marina has. 'I been doin', things I shouldn't do'. This is a haunting song that looks at dark, introverted Marina and how she feels she needs to break up with someone, but feels emotionally torn up about hurting them at the same time. The 'Babe I'm gonna ruin you, if you let me stay' part gives me goosebumps every time.

Would've been my 11. A special, special song. Proved most clearly by the fact Joseph doesn't rate it tongue.gif

'I'm A Ruin' had to grow on me over time, but what a song! I was expecting it to win this if I'm honest.

Posted by: Joe. 7th January 2016, 08:12 PM

There's something about Marina acknowledging that she doesn't always feel she's a good person in the lyrics that I find so refreshing and melancholic. :'(

Anyway, for the top 3...

#3 Radioactive
Average: 9.69

HIGH: 152chris (11), Parallel Reality (11), Cremey (11), Kuki Sanban (11), Mr_pmt (11), Lindsey (11), Henderella (11), Cody (10), Joe. (10), Liаm (10), princess_lotti (10), Harry Flynn (10), randomfurlong (10)

I think lots of people were put off when originally hearing this not-yet-fully-formed introduction to Electra Heart. I remember seeing the song's Youtube comments filled with 'She's sold out' comments. Obviously, this was because of the heavy dance-pop influence, that all the popstars seemed to be going for at the time. Radioactive, I feel, remains fresh. There's something sinister and satirical in the way the song is written, that brings it to life. It's hard to believe that this was actually a top 40 hit, peaking at #25 back in 2011.

Posted by: Joe. 7th January 2016, 08:25 PM

0.01 between the top 2, FYI

Posted by: Noahspike 7th January 2016, 08:29 PM

I really thought 'Mowgli's Road' would divide opinion too much to be this high ohmy.gif. Nice to be proven wrong though! Would slightly prefer it to 'Oh No!' as the winner but that'd also make a fitting #1 so who cares really.

Excellent work, Buzzjack (and Joe for hosting). cheer.gif

#2 Mowgli's Road
Average: 9.75

HIGH: Froot. (11), randomfurlong (11), cremey (11), Tony (11), Parallel Reality (11), Heezus Froot (11), dandy* (11), Lindsey (11), Cody (10), Cameron (10), Henderella (10), princess_lotti (10), Harry Flynn (10)

I never expected the very first Marina song I heard would make it so high into the rate, just 0.01 point from winning the entire rate...but the scores say otherwise.

#1 Oh No!
Average: 9.76

HIGH: Froot. (11), Tony (11), Cameron (11), Cody (11), Joe (10), Henderella (10), Lindsey (10), Mr_pmt (10), princess_lotti (10), Kuki Sanban (10), Viper (10), Harry Flynn (10), Parallel Reality (10), 152chris (10), randomfurlong (10)

And obviously, the winner is the ever popular 'Oh No!' I don't know how to explain what it is about this song that makes it Marina's most popular song, over some of her others but I'll give it a try; everything just fits together perfectly. It's loud, catchy, colourful and memorable without ever being annoying. What an excellent winner, vintage Marina at her best.

Thanks everyone, that was fun.

Posted by: Froot. 7th January 2016, 08:53 PM

Oh No! is the PERFECT pop song, so I'm glad to see it do so well again. wub.gif

I'm a Ruin continues to grow and astound with every listen, the lyrics are perfection. I particularly love how it is paired with Blue in Froot's tracklist. Hearing Marina say she's going to break up with her partner and then you have the opening line of Blue: 'We've broken up and now I regret it' and the whole subject matter of Blue. Perfect, again. heart.gif

You were allowed 3 non-album confined 11s, so both could have had that honour. What would your third have been?

Posted by: Iz~ 7th January 2016, 09:19 PM

Oh right! Probably Numb then. I've said that's my favourite in the past and while I think those two have overtaken it lately, I do adore ballad Marina.

(and I seem to be heavily weighted to the first era)

Oh yay Oh No won biggrin.gif my second fave of the top 5. Radioactive ending at #3 funky.gif

Need to hear the first album again.

Great and worthy winner, everything about 'Oh No!' is just undeniable. wub.gif

I'm shocked 'Mowgli's Road' came so close to winning. ohmy.gif

'Radioactive' over time emerged as my Marina favourite, I thought at the time that it sort of just slipped under the radar but it seems to have gained cult status over time (particularly in the gay community).

Posted by: Colm 7th January 2016, 11:32 PM

Perfect top 2 and in the correct order. Mowgli's Road is her most Kate Bush moment and all the better for it. Oh No! is still the best pop song of the decade.
