Leading Irish racehorse trainer Gordon Elliott says a photo circulating on social media of him posing with a dead horse is real.

The image shows him sitting on a dead horse while making a phone call.

The Irish Horseracing Regulatory Board (IHRB) has launched an investigation into the image, which Elliott says was taken "some time ago".

Flipping heck Gordon Elliott. That is seriously messed up.

As you may know he trains two-time Grand National winner Tiger Roll.

I'm just flabbergasted by this.

The photo is absolutely disgusting. I could totally buy his story otherwise if he was not posing. Good to see Betfair have cut their ties with him and I suspect he's going to either recieve a lengthy ban or might even lose his training license. His statement is honestly baffling, 99.9% of trainers absolutely love the horses.

It is truly disgusting indeed, myself I'm completely shocked about the news of this. I'm glad Betfair have cut ties with him. This will huge implications for horse racing indeed. I think he should get a lengthy ban or his training licence. I'm shocked to the core with this about Gordon Elliott.

Can't say I'm a massive fan of horse racing at the best of times but that photo is truly horrendous and I'm glad the BHA have taken action. Here's hoping HRI follow suit if they haven't already.

Good riddance that the BHA has taken action. That photo is disgusting, warning don't go on the Daily Mail sport website, they show the photo at the top. Hope HRI follow immediately. As a fan, i'm angry and feel sick at this.

I know, stuff like this makes me feel really uneasy. I can understand the want to support and stay neutral before an investigation has been completed, but I think that's been really misjudged. While I am sure he is sorry, the excuse he came up with is awful, pure dig ate my homework stuff.

Cheveley Park Stud have become the first major owner to remove horses from Gordon Elliott following the emergence over the weekend of a distressing image of the trainer sitting on a dead horse.

Richard Thompson, a Cheveley Park director and the son of the stud's owner Patricia Thompson, confirmed eight horses would be leaving Elliott and they would be split between Willie Mullins and Henry de Bromhead.

Envoi Allen, the unbeaten superstar and short-priced favourite for the Grade 1 Marsh Novices' Chase at the Cheltenham Festival, will join De Bromhead alongside JCB Triumph Hurdle contender Quilixios, while Mullins will take charge of Weatherbys Champion Bumper hope Sir Gerhard.

Tiger Roll will not be given the opportunity to try to win a third Grand National after owners Gigginstown withdrew him from next month's race at Aintree.

In a statement, Gigginstown announced Tiger Roll had been removed from the National at today's forfeit stage due to an "unfair weight burden".

Trainer Gordon Elliott has been banned for a year and fined €15,000 after he was found guilty of bringing racing into disrepute for sitting on a dead horse while taking a phone call in 2019. Six months of that sentence will be suspended.

The hearing took place at Naas racecourse on Friday morning and Elliott was punished under Rule 272(i), which relates to someone within racing's jurisdiction acting in a manner which is "prejudicial to the integrity, proper conduct or good reputation of horseracing".
