BuzzJack Music Forum _ Katy Perry _ Katy on American Idol

It's been floating around for a while, but looks kind of confirmed here...

I feel this will harm her more than help her. I think being a talent shown judge in this day and age should only be done if it will really boost your career or its past the point of no return (JHud). She's still a powerful force and being attached to a tired format is kind of beneath her at this stage of her career. I don't think exposing her personality even more when she already is kind of going through this 'mini-backlash' will help either. (see JJJJJessie J)

I don't known why they're bringing it back as it was a flagging concept even before it was cancelled.

Posted by: Joe. 16th May 2017, 02:25 PM

Yeah, I'm not sure it's the best move either, especially as it means we probably won't get a European tour. The only star in the US, talent show judging seems to have benefited, is Maroon 5.

Posted by: Liаm 16th May 2017, 02:45 PM

She was fab as a guest judge but I'm not sure either, they probably want someone who's currently a big name but I agree it could easily do her more harm than good. It'll get solid viewing figures but I'm not sure she can afford to expose her personality this much in what feels potentially a critical period for her career. It probably won't air until early 2018 though so her little backlash period will probably be over laugh.gif

American Idol‏ @AmericanIdol 16m16 minutes ago
We are ecstatic to welcome @katyperry as a judge on ABC's #AmericanIdol! #KatyOnIdol #Idol

Not sure how I feel about it, for the reasons outlined above, but hopefully she'll be great!

Posted by: Joe. 16th May 2017, 09:14 PM

It's not back until 2018, so will have been off air for two years, so might draw in quite a few viewers, also Disney have promised to help promote Witness, so it's a good deal IMO. It also means she gets big slots performing on Idol.

Posted by: cqmerqn 16th May 2017, 09:42 PM

I feel like this may damage her career even more.

Posted by: Regina 16th May 2017, 11:15 PM

AI helped J-lo during the Love? era though. Might help Katy too.

Posted by: Cody S. Berry 16th May 2017, 11:32 PM

Grant actually has a point. I'm not entirely sure about Mariah or Nicki but it definitely helped J-Lo and Keith Urban when it came to promo slots for their eras. IIRC X Factor US also had Demi who was pretty current and she gained a ton of promo slots for both the Unbroken and DEMI eras. Clearly artists becoming judges in shows while in the current radio mainframe is nothing new. This could be helpful for Katy.

That said... hoping for a small chance that Keith will come back as a judge

Being a coach on The Voice really did wonders for Blake Shelton's career too, his just doesn't reach beyond North America. I'm also a bit apprehensive about Katy judging on Idol but am willing to tune in and see how it goes for her. I think it could go either way.

Posted by: ~josh~ 17th May 2017, 07:04 AM

I'm pleased that she's going to get the exposure and extra promotion from the show, hopefully it will help her chart performance out a bit more. I am kind of worried about what Froot said that she could end up being the next Jessie J though. I remember a few of us were discussing how unlikable she came across in the Capital/Radio 1 interviews back when she was promoting CTTR and I'm worried that she could come across like that here too :/

Bad move I think. Doing TV is not something you should be doing at your peak. And American Idol, an old show and an old format is even worse. Unless perhaps she's trying to move out of music altogether for a few years after this album and is taking this as an opportunity to get some experience to help her out with that.

I can see her hosting a talk show or similar.

Her peak though? unsure.gif

Well, she's not past it. Is she even 30 yet? Her last album era was pretty successful and anchored by strong #1 hits.

Taking a TV contract now seems like a failsafe in case this era goes badly which doesn't seem confident. Which is a little strange given the effort that's seemed to go in so far with the restyling and expensive features and videos.

Posted by: cqmerqn 23rd May 2017, 06:49 AM

She does come across as really unlikeable.

I'm starting to dislike her after the way she acts

Me too sad.gif

She's 32.

She's definitely had her peak, which was around 2010-2013.

Her age has NOTHING to do with her peak! So many artists have hit their peaks long after they hit 30. Madonna is one of them. Sia is another!

If the age thing was aimed at me, I was purely answering the other posters comment asking how old she was.

I've edited my comment to make it clear the comment around her peak has nothing do to with her age.

Mainly the other poster, but I was unsure about your post as I thought that was what you meant anyway! laugh.gif

Posted by: 360Jupiter 25th May 2017, 05:32 PM

She is older than I thought then. Hmm okay.

I guess she may still have another peak but now I think about it her last album wasn't exactly on fire either. I was forgetting how uneven Prism was.

Posted by: Yeasty Clutch 25th May 2017, 05:42 PM

She's over now.

Prism would have been another huge era if she released the right singles in the right order!! But i still had Roar and Dark Horse anyway.

Posted by: THEO. 7th November 2017, 01:17 PM

This will premiere on March 11 next year!

Posted by: Spiceboy 7th November 2017, 10:07 PM

I don't think this is going to be a good move for her. I used to quite like her but the more I see of her the more irritating and quite bitchy she appears I have found myself going right off her. Hopefully she doesn't come across this way on AI she may even prove herself as a much nicer person than she appears... Fingers crossed for her.

Posted by: Jonjo 2nd April 2018, 03:06 PM

She's really bringing some life into the show. Her swooning over a contestant is my fave though laugh.gif

American Idol has been renewed for another season and Katy has been confirmed to return, alongside the other judges and Ryan Seacrest!

Posted by: ubɹǝɯbƆ 4th May 2018, 09:08 PM

American Idol has helped Katy’s career so much I think!

Posted by: Same Ol' Andrew 5th May 2018, 04:11 PM

I always wanted her to be a judge on the UK X Factor sad.gif

Posted by: Theo. 16th May 2018, 11:29 AM

Katy seems to have confirmed that she'll be performing on the final on Monday!

Posted by: Theo. 22nd May 2018, 10:10 AM

She performed an acoustic version of "Part of Me" with eliminated contestant Catie Turner:

I actually really enjoyed that! It's always refreshing to hear an artist perform one of their hits in a completely different arrangement to the original.

Posted by: Joe. 22nd May 2018, 10:25 AM

Good to hear the acoustic Part of Me, she performed it quite a few times last year and I loved it every time.

Posted by: liamk97 23rd May 2018, 09:16 PM

Catie Turner sounds more like Katy Perry than Katy Perry does.

Posted by: troublepink 24th May 2018, 02:40 PM

Love that version of Part of Me wub.gif

This might be old news by now but I only just saw it!

“I love the show so much...but I want to go see the world and maybe bring new music.”

“I think this will probably be my last show, my last season for Idol...I love Idol so much. It’s connected me with the heart of America, but I feel like I need to go out and feel that pulse to my own beat.”

“Let’s just say I’m creating space for my new wingspan.”

SO many hints dropped about new music and Jimmy took the bait on zero of them lol.
