BuzzJack Music Forum _ Spice Girls _ Melanie C - 'The Sea'

Posted by: This Time 24th August 2010, 10:07 PM

So its just been confirmed she working all week with Richard Stannard and his team! EXCITING! Man behind Goin Down and Suddenly Monday and the majority of the Spice Girl singles!!!

She was also in Germany around 2 weeks ago for a meeting with Warner Music and its been confirmed shes recorded a song over there written by Hanne Sørvaag and has been described as a mid-tempo pop song.

I hope shes going back to a similar sound to the Northern Star era, This Time was just to soft!

Posted by: shakilover 25th August 2010, 06:11 AM

So exciting!

Posted by: Matt Aloud 25th August 2010, 10:49 AM

Give us First Day Of My Life as a bonus track!

Posted by: Aphrodite 25th August 2010, 03:28 PM

Great news and i look forward to the album getting released, none of her albums have disapointed me to date although reason is my favourite by far to date.

Posted by: Casey__ 26th August 2010, 11:25 AM

Amaazing! I love a bit of Mel C in my life.

Hopefully she will go back down the Northern Star route.

Posted by: Aphrodite 26th August 2010, 08:05 PM

i wouldnt mind that route either as that era produced some great material and was also hugely successful for her.

Posted by: Dandy* 9th September 2010, 06:09 PM

So exciting!

Posted by: JΛRK 13th July 2011, 01:30 PM

First proper single from her fifth album, produced by Cutfather, song + video debut on her website this Friday at 11AM.

Posted by: Simon. 13th July 2011, 01:58 PM

Thank god Rock Me wasn't laugh.gif looking forward to this happy.gif pity I'm working at the time mellow.gif

Posted by: vibe 13th July 2011, 05:29 PM

cant wait for this , she makes amazing albums but i have questioned her single choices in the past!

Posted by: Aphrodite 14th July 2011, 12:45 AM

Ya, i have loved all her albums but she has made some terrible mistakes with singles, i hope this new era and muster up even a little bit of success in the UK, Im sure she will do ok in Europe though.

Posted by: gigababy 14th July 2011, 06:35 AM

I used to like her music tongue.gif and think she is very talented musician.
Where is she now? In USA or here? dry.gif

Posted by: JΛRK 15th July 2011, 10:36 AM

I really like it! Fantastic for summer.

Posted by: vibe 15th July 2011, 11:41 AM

I really dont know what to think about the track, i really like the ending of it but think it maybe takes too long to get going?

I also wonder if the song and video connect? I imagine listening to it on radio and think it could work, not that she will get playlisted!!!

I wish her all the luck though and will be purchasing it!!

Posted by: Regina 15th July 2011, 11:51 AM

I really like it. much better than Rock Me.

Posted by: Simon. 15th July 2011, 04:49 PM

Its okay don't think its much of an improvement on Rock Me, just alright songs imo. Can't see it going anywhere sad.gif

Posted by: martyn 15th July 2011, 09:42 PM

It's alright I suppose, better than Rock Me. The video is alright as videos which has 27p spent on them go.

Posted by: Aphrodite 15th July 2011, 11:20 PM

While i like rock me and think about it the magic of the songs that was on reason is missing, i loved that album and is by far my fave mel c album, i would love more of that, while i like her recent stuff it just l;acks that something special unfortunatly as i really like mel and owuld love her to do well, she is the only solo spice i still like and enjoy.

Posted by: Aidan 16th July 2011, 09:22 AM

I really really like this after a few listens!

Posted by: vibe 16th July 2011, 12:14 PM

really grown on me already!!

Posted by: Spiral 16th July 2011, 12:24 PM

This is a fantastic song!! I would love it if it just made the bottom of the top 40! But that's not going to happen sad.gif

Posted by: ▲▲▲ 16th July 2011, 12:40 PM

This is so Katy Perry/Kelly Clarkson/Pink and would probably be a hit for all three of them.

Posted by: Liаm 16th July 2011, 03:17 PM

This is really good, shame it'll be lucky to get top 75 sad.gif

Posted by: vibe 16th July 2011, 05:17 PM

i can really imagine katy pery singing this track (not as well mind you).

Anyone know who directed the video? Dont know why Melanie is releasing this on the same day as the album?

Posted by: dannjohn3 16th July 2011, 06:35 PM

I LOVE it!

Posted by: This Time 16th July 2011, 06:47 PM

The B-side Cruel Intentions sounds really good: http://soundcloud.com/whatstheworstthing/melanie-c-cruel-intentions

The lead single from This Time went top 40, so this song will hopefully also go top 40.

Posted by: Casey__ 16th July 2011, 07:13 PM

I like this a lot. Definitely an improvement on 'Rock Me' (although I like that too!) She looks pretty in the video too. <3

Posted by: Aphrodite 16th July 2011, 07:49 PM

I wonder has she any uk promo lined up?

Posted by: Mikeyjosh 16th July 2011, 07:58 PM

Mega impressed with this. Not been a fan of Mel since her first and only IMO amazing album.
Love her though, she's my fave spice!

Posted by: Jonjo 17th July 2011, 03:03 AM

This is BRILLIANT. Better than 'Rock Me'! I definitely get the Katy Perry comparisons etc. I think 'Rock Me' managing to do decently on iTunes without promotion/video airplay/radio airplay etc.. proves that there is definitely some sort of demand for Mel.

Posted by: timberlake_x 18th July 2011, 09:21 AM

Great song! Glad rock me was only a buzz single

Posted by: Red Blooded Man 18th July 2011, 12:44 PM

The verse is good and but song is overall let down by the chorus, and yes, it's a HUGE improvement from "rock me".

Posted by: vibe 19th July 2011, 01:24 PM

only european promo announced so far!

Im liking the sound of cruel intentions, im starting to reaklly look forward to the album now.

Posted by: Slick 28th July 2011, 09:49 PM

I like this! I liked Rock Me too though. Why wasn't that 'proper'?

Album Track Preview: Burn

Written and recorded by Melanie, Adam Argyle and the Cutfather team in Copenhagen, this is a classic Cutfather production. The footage is taken from special previews that Melanie performed for Warner Music and European media last month.

I like this one the most.

Posted by: JΛRK 4th August 2011, 08:35 PM

The whole album so far sounds really strong and diverse. Should make up for This Time. I can only listen to about 4 songs from that nowadays without dropping into a coma.

Posted by: This Time 6th August 2011, 04:25 PM

We can now exclusively reveal the track listing of the UK CD release of Melanie's long awaited fifth album 'The Sea'. Along with Melanie's new single 'Think About It', the album features 10 brand new tracks, including 'Stupid Game', 'All About You' and 'Burn', which we have recently previewed.

The album opens with the title track 'The Sea', which Melanie co-wrote with Richard "Biff" Stannard, who Melanie has previously worked with on 'Goin' Down' as well as various Spice Girls tracks. Melanie collaborated on the song 'Weak' with Jez Ashurst and Ina Wroldsen and it is one of Melanie's personal favourites. The closing track from the album is the epic eight minute long 'Enemy', which Melanie wrote with long serving band member Greg Hatwell.
01 The Sea
02 Weak
03 Think About It
04 Beautiful Mind
05 One By One
06 Stupid Game
07 All About You
08 Burn
09 Drown
10 Get Out Of Here
11 Enemy

You can now pre-order 'The Sea' from Townsend Records (including exclusive postcard), HMV, Play.com and Amazon UK. We'll be posting another album preview on Monday, so make sure you keep an eye on MelanieC.net and Melanie's official Facebook page.

'Tonight's the Night' performances:

'When You're Gone' (duet with Lisa Dalton):

'Think About It':

That 'Think About It' performance is BRILLIANT. Really, really getting back into this song now. (I was never completely out of love with it, but it was starting to wear out a little for me. GAH. I hope this can go top 40 at least! sad.gif

Posted by: gooddelta 7th August 2011, 03:54 PM

Always forget how much I like When You're Gone/how good Mel is live. She's looking great too.

Her solo career puts those of the other four to shame, I can't see Think About It going anywhere near the top 40 but it definitely deserves it!

Posted by: vibe 7th August 2011, 06:09 PM

the performance was stunning!!!

Did we know this album has leaked? It's only an MQ webrip but it's good enough for now.

Enemy is instantly up there with the best stuff she's ever done. All 8 minutes of it!

Posted by: Crowan 25th August 2011, 07:39 PM

Can't wait for this. Always loved Melanie. Me and my mate have both preordered the album, so there are at least two sales guaranteed laugh.gif

Posted by: JxRk 25th August 2011, 07:42 PM

I don't know if I'm just being naive but I really feel like this album could do significantly better than the last. There seems to be quite a lot of chatter and buzz around it from casual fans who perhaps weren't turned on by I Want Candy and didn't bother with This Time. I certainly think it can get top 30 and sell more than 13k all told.

Rather than download a leak, why don't you listen to the clips on itunes and buy it when it comes out to support the artist, rather than downloading an illegal copy which doesn't benefit the artist at all.

Oh ZZZ what a boring argument. The free availability of illegal downloads encourages the artist to make better music. If Melanie has made a strong album (and she has) then she need not worry about losing sales from illegal downloads. It's actually healthy in terms of pushing artists to make quality music.

I disagree. Illegal downloads actually lose artists thousands of pounds. Its like walking into a shop and stealing something which you havent actually paid for.

Well its a bit pointless stealing something you DID pay for.

Posted by: JxRk 25th August 2011, 10:37 PM

I'm not casting doubt on the illegality of it. Of course it's illegal and perhaps immoral. Either you've misinterpreted my point or chosen to ignore it, that being that when you know thousands of people who might previously have bought your album are now only going to do so if they 'preview' it via an illegal download and like what they hear, you've got a stronger incentive to make a decent record than when you knew the fans would buy it regardless. If there's one good thing to come of the digital era in that regard it's that artists can't be complacent. Bad for the label, yes, good for the fan who can expect a quality album.

How many people actually download something for free and then go out and buy the actual album in the shops though? Some people will use the excuse that they want to listen to the album first, well itunes provide 90 second clips of all tracks which usually give you a strong indication of whether you will like the album. Secondly, I think in a lot of cases, most people will only download it for free than pay £10 in the shops. Album sales have been on a steep decline in the past couple of years and I think its incredibly wrong of websites like this to be encouraging something which has actually been proven to harm an artists sales.

Even 1:30 clips, don't give a good indication of how a song will appeal to you once you've bedded it in a bit. Often clips are entirely misleading, more often than not I'd say.

This website isn't 'encouraging' anything - I'm baffled as to how you've come to that conclusion. I'm giving an opinion, so is Regina, it doesn't reflect the website as a whole.

I really don't see what the problem is by downloading the leak to know what the album is like when I am going to buy the album when it comes out.
1 minute clips on itunes are not enough to fully get a taste of the album, especially Enemy which is 8 minutes long.

People all over the site are aksing for links to other leaked album yet you single us out here in this thread.

Finished listening, pretty damn amazing.

Top 5.

1. Enemy

2. Stupid Game
3. Burn
4. Think About It
5. The Sea

Stupid Game is the next single apparently. Seems like a good choice.

Posted by: Regina 26th August 2011, 04:39 PM

Excellent choice.

I would say Enemy would be good, but to edit it for radio would be a crime. 8 minutes of pure amazingness.

Posted by: JxRk 4th September 2011, 09:50 PM

Reason was a mess. I think the only album which challenges this one is Beautiful Intentions. This is certainly more consistent but that did have a couple more highlights (title song, Next Best Superstar, Last Night On Earth, You Will See).

I do. I don't even keep albums I download if I don't like them.

Using Mel C as an example - her last album was atrocious. It was so bad. I can't go into words how bad it was. So naturally I deleted that crap and never purchased it.
Not having high hopes for this album after the dire "Rock Me" - I still decided to download the album and give it a chance. So thankful I did, I *love* this album. Right back up there with Northern Star & Beautiful Intentions. Of course I went and purchased it from HMV.com, hopefully it will arrive tomorrow...

This performance on Loose Women has seen her climb from an iTunes position of #241 earlier this morning, to #127 at the moment! If only she promoted more than she does.

Me too, I thought they were the only other potential singles on the album, this is like Better Alone all over again (Mel pushing a song because she loves it, rather than it being a radio-friendly single, and it subsequently flopping everywhere) cry.gif

Posted by: -Jay- 22nd September 2011, 04:16 PM

The Sea fell to #101.

Not hugely into Weak, but judging by her recent YouTube videos, it's a song she feels very passionate about.

But if she thought about making an album, she obviously wants it to do something! Why not show the best on your album? 'Burn' and 'Stupid Game' are the clear "fan favourites" so I don't know why she's decided to look past them. She has Radio 2 on her side so I doubt they'll flop horribly. She just needs to get decent television performances and perform around the release.

Shame as she really deserves more success!!!

Mr Dandy bought this on the 2 for £10 deal on Amazon as he wanted to get the Christina Perri album (yes, we have very different tastes!) and I'm surprised at how okay The Sea is, much more tolerable than I'd anticipated.

Omg #101 for The Sea bloody typical cry.gif

I'll never get over The Sea charting at #45 it deserved to be a top 40 at the very minimum!
Mod Edit: Above quote taken from Melanie C's chart topic, I thought it would be better for the 'The Sea' chat to continue in this topic instead, so I've moved the posts!

The Sea deserved so much better, but her marketing team made some horrible decisions. There was no hype for the album. The single choices were all wrong. Had she built momentum towards the album release, it definitely would have gone top 20. This strategy is exactly why her 8th album has done so well.

Imagine

Burn (May)
Think About It (July)
Drown (September)
The Sea album (October)

Posted by: sammy01 11th October 2020, 08:48 PM

Burn was the obvious 2nd single from the Sea. She killed Think about it herself by releasing it the same week as the album, tbh it was a miracle it got to #90.

Weak would have been fine as a 3rd single and radio 2 loved it.

Posted by: Sideout 11th October 2020, 11:20 PM

Think About It was her big comeback hit and she spent nothing on the music video. Terrible release strategy with the song. I'll never understand it.

Beautiful Mind - 6/10
One By One - 6/10
Stupid Game - 7/10
All About You - 8/10
Burn - 10/10
Drown - 10/10

Burn

What was interesting visually about it? I can't think of anything. It's one of her worst music videos. She is just standing in front of a cheap green screen the entire time.

Unpopular opinion alert, The Sea is somewhat overrated. I can't wrap my head around how so many fans dismiss Version of Me and rank The Sea above it. The Sea might have higher highs than VOM, but overall the latter has better production and is a stronger body of work. Take away the top 4 tracks from The Sea and what's left is very hit or miss.

My favorite songs from the album would be
Drown
Weak
Enemy
Think About It
Burn
All About You

I never quite enjoyed this to be honest, mainly because of the screetching in the chorus and some cringe lyrics pirate.gif But I do admit that it is the type of song that really comes alive when it is done live. Like Headlines and Mama, they are elevated in the live setting.

I loathe TAI. Too screamy. Same for Burn, love the song, hate the vocals. The vocal journey she started with Version Of Me helped Melanie find a healthier way of singing. The Sea has some great moment, like the titletrack, Drown, Weak, One by One.. the rest is ok. She improved a lot vocally. To me Melanie C and VOM are way more interesting records because of the vocals.

Think About It gives me headaches, not fond of those high pitched belting notes
Burn had potential, but it screams headache as well

The other songs are not that good. I’m so glad VOM was so different and she fully embraced a more interesting type of pop in MC.

1. Northern Star
2. Melanie C

3. Version Of Me

4. Beautiful Intentions

5. The rest

I never got the love for The Sea either. It has interesting songs but the production value is a bit bad, the lyric content sometimes are too cringe and she does sound too pichy for my liking...

The Sea is the true follow-up to Northern Star. Almost every track on the album is a killer: the mesmerising & majestic title track, the epic Enemy, the beautiful Weak, the dramatic Get Out of Here, the sinister Stupid Games, the heartfelt One By One (which should have been a duet and released as a single!), the pop gems Burn & Think About It - and my absolute favourite Drown. wub.gif

Stupid Games, Cruel Intentions (b-side), and Drown > Think About It

One By One is not bad, but nothing new. I think it would have worked as a duet though. With James from Starsailors or whatever that band name is w00t.gif

The problem of The Sea is that nothing is a surprise, everything sounds like a bland version of things someone else had done already - and I still get that patchwork effect that personally bothers me. At least, Northern Star was cohesive in terms of production.

To me, Melanie C is her best along Northern Star, hands down. I hope her new album will be at least among her top3.

There was a lot I appreciated from albums 2-4, but I agree that it's The Sea as a body of work that felt like the proper successor to Northern Star. It'll always be a shame that it missed the UK Top 40.

I'll always consider Think About It to be one of her very best singles. Clearly she's belting a lot but for me it isn't unpleasant, for me it adds a feeling of urgency to the track. Bop!

Because Radio 2 (the only station who would play her) said that they liked that one and would play it if released… and it became her biggest radio hit since On the horizon so they kept true to their word.

But I utterly LOVE weak I prefer it to Burn (which I also love) however I think Burn sounded much more commercial I am surprised Radio 2 didn’t want that one tbh.

This Time is Geri’s Passion (Melanie C version).
Bland, unnecessary, and with a song in it (Desire / I Want Candy) that has nothing to do with the rest of the album.

To me, her worst record with that Stages thing (that Emma feat though, Jesus, Mary, St Joseph rotf.gif)

Reason, at least, is amazing / interesting at times: Home / Love To You / I Love You Without Trying / Wonderland/ Living Without You - 90% of this being b-sides

It wasn't exactly overlooked. I'm sure it was in contention to be a future single as Melanie hinted at it (see the below video) and even performed it on German TV once, but the campaign got cut short due to the disappointing chart performance of the album.
