Top 40 Chart Commentary

After 12 weeks of Kungs at #1, he gives way to Offaiah whose 'Trouble' climbs 2 places to claim this week's #1. Offaiah follows Kungs in getting his first #1 with his first charting single, and the single is now gaining in the UK top 40 chart too though it is unlikely that it'll be a future #1 there. It is also the first #1 by an Argentinian.

Kungs and Offaiah swap positions, with 'This Girl' falling 2 places to this week's #3. Despite that Kungs himself remains in the top two as his own 'Don't You Know' overtakes this week to climb to #2, in a close race for the #1 between it and 'Trouble'. The song is also the first hit for featured artist Jamie N Commons.

Martin Solveig remains at #4 with 'Do It Right' and Tobtok falls three places with 'Aber' to complete the top 5.

Steve James keeps on climbing with 'In My Head', bettering its peak position by 2 as it jumps six places to #6, knocking Felix Jaehn down a position in the process. Martin Garrix is a non-mover at #8 with 'In The Name Of Love'. Marshmello re-peaks this week also climbing a single place to #9 with 'Alone'.

At #10 comes a new entry from Zara Larsson titled 'Ain't My Fault'. It is her first solo release since 'Lush Life' (former #1) and becomes her second top ten hit. Inbetween these releases she however gained two top 20 hits, collaborating with Tinie Tempah ('Girls Like', #12) and David Guetta ('This One's For You', #16). When earlier release 'Never Forget You' (#13) is added she has a total of five top 20 hits, and that's in just under a year. Very impressive.

It seems to be a good week for Swedish female pop singers. As well as Zara Larsson entering the chart, Tove Lo climbs 11 places to reach a new peak with 'Cool Girl' at #12. It previously peaked at #14 in its first week of release. Also improving peaks within the top 20 are Bob Marley's 'Is This Love' (climbs 19-14) and John Gibbons' 'Would I Lie To You' (climbs 20-15).

Last week Armand Van Helden returned to the chart with 'Wings' at #28. It now climbs ten places to give him his second top 20 hit as a solo artist, following 2010's #2 hit 'Brrrat!'. He has of course had other charts hits as part of Duck Sauce.

Big climbers within the top 40 come from Tez Cadey and Tory Lanez who each climb 12 places. 'Walls' is up to #24 for Tez Cadey and 'Luv' improves Tory Lanez' artist peak to #28. A less impressive re-peak, but still a re-peak, comes from Armin van Buuren who moves up one position to #23 with 'Again'.

The largest climber in the top 100 and a new entry to the top 40 comes from Dua Lipa with 'Blow Your Mind (Mwah)', which instantly outpeaks 'Hotter Than Hell' (#33) but is yet to match the peak of debut single 'Be The One' (#10). She enters at #29 this week.

Also climbing into the top 40 is D.R.A.M. or Shelley Marshaun Massenburg-Smith to his family. He is a rapper from Virginia, US, although he was born in Germany. Teaming with Lil Yachty (Georgia, US) who is roughly a week younger than I am, they make 'Broccoli' become both of their first top 40 hits. The song as you may have guessed is in fact not about the (great) vegetable of broccoli, it's actually yet another rap song about smoking weed.

Frenship entered the top 40 at #29 with 'Capsize' two weeks ago but made a swift exit. They now re-enter at #35.

The final entry comes from Porter Robinson and Madeon, yes it's both of them on the same song. Both artists have been very successful in their own right in the chart before, each having at least one top 2 hit to their name (and Porter Robinson of course having the huge #1 'Language'). It seems they can't quite recreate that magic on this new song, titled 'Shelter', but it's still good enough to climb into this week's top 40 at #36. It is the sixth top 40 hit for Robinson and the fifth for Madeon.
