That said, I thought we'd moved on from this ridiculous idea of cancelling people for stupid, mindless stuff they said on Twitter when they were kids? We've seen it with many celebrities - Dua Lipa, Rita Ora and Louisa all come to mind. Shawn was 14 years old, which doesn't make it okay but it isn't relevant now he's 21 years old and hasn't done it since. I think that should speak louder. He's apologised rightfully, now it's time to move on and learn how to get better.

It's clear that's not the person that Shawn's become 7 years down the line, and that he knows that's unacceptable behaviour. He's done the right thing apologising.

His apology seems sincere (as far as you can tell from a message), and that's really all he can do now I suppose, that past can't be changed. I really can't relate to the kids who tweet such awful things so casually. I suppose a lack of maturity & peer pressure are excuses, but then I think back to myself as a teenager (early 2000s x) and I never thought like that, I wouldn't have thought of writing comments like that (I didn't have social media, but there was still MSN and MySpace). I don't think there's any excuse for it, but then I don't think someone should be cancelled for being really stupid as a child, particularly if they're remorseful. If I was him I'd always feel incredibly ashamed for ever being that sort of person! I'm honestly surprised that record labels don't purge an artist's Twitter page the moment they sign them.

I guess record labels may or may not see 'scandals' like this being brought up as "any publicity is good publicity", although it really could be quite detrimental in this cancelling era (which really does need to stop).

Basically everything you said. There are a few people saying “he was 14 years old in 2012 it was a completely different world he has changed with the world?!?!?” Like seriously wtf? I was 14 in 2002 and I wouldn’t have dreamed of saying or posting any of that!? Just hope his apology is sincere if so we need to move on, I can completely understand why people of colour are upset though, as a gay person who was called all sorts of names and subject to so much homophobia growing up, those feelings of hurt never truly go away.

Much the same way boybands got told to not have girlfriends in the 90s/00s, I can almost see this becoming the norm from now on in light of recent events. As others have said though the amount of hell fire being poured on him this last week is completely disproportionate when he's clearly not the same person he was seven years ago and he's apologised.
