We're getting closer to the Mercury Prize and you know what that means? Prediction time!
Possible contenders: Little Simz (this one has to make it through. It received so much universal praise and made it high on so many Best Albums Of 2021 list, and I think it's great too) CHVRCHES Self Esteem Joy Crookes Black Country, New Road (these last four are very likely to make it through. Seen a lot of buzz around them) - Fontaines DC (hope this one gets through) Florence + The Machine Wet Leg The Mysterines Nilufer Yanya Sam Fender The Lathums Kelly Lee Owens Public Service Broadcasting Porridge Radio Let’s Eat Grandma Tirzah Charli XCX Rex Orange County Paolo Nutini Another UK rap album (Knucks, Kae Tempest, Kojey Radical, Ray BLK) Jazz album (Binker & Moses, Emma-Jean Thackray) Debut album At least one commercial success (Adele, Harry Styles, Years & Years, George Ezra) Personal wishlist: Foals, Black Midi, Alfie Templeman, Yard Act, Working Men’s Club, IDLES, Jungle, Everything Everything, The Smile, Bloc Party, Lone, Bonobo, Ross From Friends, Frank Carter & The Rattlesnakes Dave's album may not make it since the previous album already won, but Wolf Alice managed to get Blue Weekend in the nominations last year despite its predecessor winning so I might be wrong. Did BCNR ever have any professional recordings of songs from AFUT? If not it’ll be interesting to see what they show instead of their performance.

I’d like to see Let’s Eat Grandma, Working Men’s Club, CHVRCHES, Hard Feelings, Little Simz, Florence, Black Country New Road and then for them all to get beaten by Self Esteem

Don't know if FKA Twigs will get nominated because it's a mixtape. The Mercury Prize is British/Irish only! Sunflower Bean and Gang of Youths are American/Australian Was going to say the same, but GOY are England-based, so they MIGHT get nominated |

Wet Leg are the early favourites (meh) followed by Kae Tempest, Self Esteem and Little Simz. I would certainly expect all four of those to be nominated

yes for Joy Crookes <3 agree Nilufer deserved instead of the joke nomination for Harry Styles :/ There's no need to be snobby, Harry's House was critically acclaimed and actually has the exact same Metacritic score as the Nilufer album. Great to see Harry on the list, obviously a defining album of the past 12 months commercially but it deserves the recognition at something like this too (finally the "ex-boybander" tag is wearing off in the eyes of events like this) |

I'm super snob won't deny that
but I've heard the HS album and for me it's a 0, really background music in a sushi bar but the Mercury is kinda notorious for their joke nominations and even wins |

I don't expect him to win but the acknowledgement is extremely positive when there's so much continued snobbery towards artists who come from places like X Factor (see how many years it took Little Mix to win British Group at the BRITs), as this thread is proving. The album was acclaimed and Mercury failing to recognise it would be much more of a joke in my view. |

I associate Little Simz with last year, I forgot about this weird time period it takes place in! That would be my pick from the very few I've listened to here, guessing Wet Leg will be a hot favourite.
Also, I did not know Jessie Buckley did music x |

I was, on the other hand, a little disappointed that Screen Violence and Ants From Up There missed out, but this does look like a promising shortlist. Especially looking forward to checking out Gwenno and Kojey Radical (the former's Le Kov album was fantastic) This post has been edited by DalekTurret32: 26th July 2022, 02:47 PM |
