Centre George North has given Wales a Six Nations injury scare after he suffered a shoulder injury in Ospreys' Challenge Cup victory against Lions in Johannesburg.

North scored a try before leaving the field in the first half of the 38-28 win.

The 118-capped back is Wales' most experienced player in Warren Gatland's 34-man squad.

Wales' campaign starts at home against Scotland on Saturday, 3 February.

North and his fellow Ospreys team-mates in the Wales squad, Adam Beard and Owen Watkin, flew back from South Africa on Sunday evening.

Warren Gatland has warned the rest of the Six Nations to write off Wales "at your peril" and believes his youngsters are good enough to win the title.

Peter O'Mahony has described his appointment as Ireland captain for their Six Nations title defence as "the biggest honour of his career".

The veteran Munster flanker succeeds Johnny Sexton, who retired from rugby after last year's World Cup in France.

The 34-year-old has won 101 caps and has previously captained Ireland 10 times since making his debut in 2010.

"I have been in the leadership group for a long time but to be captain is very, very special," said O'Mahony.

"I've captained a few different teams I've played with and I've always enjoyed it.

Sounds like he has the right attitude for it looking at his interview with the BBC - hopefully he'll help the team do their best at the Six Nations.

England want to draw inspiration from the men's cricket team to "put smiles on fans' faces", says new captain Jamie George.

England's cricketers produced one of their best ever away wins to beat India on Sunday.

The 33-year-old admires their message to be "entertainers" and wants his side to do the same after only two wins from their past five games at home.

Fly-half Marcus Smith is a major doubt for England's Six Nations opener against Italy in Rome on Saturday after picking up an injury in training.

Smith left England's base in Girona on crutches on Monday afternoon and has been for a scan.

His absence could open the door for Northampton's Fin Smith, 21, to make his debut at the Stadio Olimpico.

Wales fly-half Callum Sheedy will join home-city team Cardiff from Bristol for the 2024-25 season.

Sheedy is out of contract at the end of this season and would not be able to play for his national side if he did not move to Wales.

The 28-year-old has not played for Wales since head coach Warren Gatland returned for a second stint in charge in December 2022.

"I'm massively looking forward to it," said Sheedy.

England lock Maro Itoje has signed a new "long-term" contract with Saracens.

The five-time Premiership winner has made 175 appearances for the club after making his debut in 2013.

Itoje, 29, has won three European Champions Cup titles at StoneX Stadium, and was also named European Player of the Year back in 2016.

The news comes after England captain Owen Farrell agreed a deal to leave Saracens for French side Racing 92 earlier this month.

Cardiff will host the 2025 Investec Champions Cup and Challenge Cup finals for the first time in 11 years.

The Welsh capital beat competition from 23 stadiums across 12 countries to win the right to stage the finals.

Next season marks the 30th staging of the European Cup, which culminated in Cardiff hosting the inaugural final in 1996 - and the following one in 1997.

Cardiff full-back Cameron Winnett will make his Wales debut in their Six Nations opener against Scotland on Saturday but centre George North misses out through injury.

North is replaced by Owen Watkin, while there are also recalls for flanker James Botham and prop Leon Brown.

At 21 years and 60 days, Dafydd Jenkins becomes Wales' second-youngest captain.

The lock is partnered by Adam Beard with Will Rowlands not included in the 23-man squad.

Ireland began their Six Nations title defence in momentous fashion as they claimed their biggest ever away win over 14-man France in Marseille.

Irish tries by Jamison Gibson-Park and Tadhg Beirne combined with France's Paul Willemse's sending off had Ireland in a strong position after 30 minutes.

Damian Penaud's try breathed new life into France just before half-time.

But despite captain Peter O'Mahony's yellow card, Ireland overcame their hosts to record a statement win by 37-18.

England scrum-half Alex Mitchell will miss the Six Nations match against Scotland on Saturday after suffering a knee injury.

The 26-year-old will likely be replaced by Danny Care or Ben Spencer for the Calcutta Cup clash at Murrayfield.

Bristol scrum-half Harry Randall has been called into Steve Borthwick's 36-man training squad as cover.

That must be unfortunate for him! Looks like England are on a good run though so hopefully shouldn't be too much of a blow.
