Singer-turned-DJ Sonique's breast cancer has spread.

The former S'Express vocalist, who had a number one with It Feels So Good in 2000, was diagnosed with the disease last week.

She underwent surgery to remove a lump from her breast at a hospital in London's Harley Street on Monday - but was later told the devastating news that the disease has spread.

According to Sky News, doctors have confirmed the disease has now spread to lymph nodes under her arms, and possibly to her organs.

Sonique was undergoing further surgery on Friday.

Her agent Cath MacKenzie says, "As you would imagine she was very distressed. The surgeon doesn't feel he got all the cancer out. She is bearing up very well but yesterday was a difficult day when she heard the news."

from Yahoo.

Devastating news..... I saw Sonique DJing countless times throughout the 90s, and she's a really lovely lady... I wish her nothing but the very best. sad.gif

Yeah I've read this elsewhere sad.gif Hope she has a healthy recovery soon. I miss her music, loved Sky back then

Posted by: zenon 20th June 2009, 03:47 PM

I'm devastated to hear about it as well, it will be a miracle now if she beats it.

Posted by: gooddelta 20th June 2009, 04:02 PM

I'm incredibly sad to hear this...I wasn't a huge fan of her music, but regardless, she always seems like a very likeable person and it's a horrible thing for her to go through sad.gif

I really hope a miracle does happen for her

Posted by: Pavel 20th June 2009, 06:16 PM

I read about it yesterday...am absolutely sad. She has so many good songs.

That's awful, she's only about 40 as well. sad.gif

She DJ'd at a club in my town last year, I agree, really nice woman. I hope a miracle can help her pull through, cancer seems to have hit quite a lot of people in the public eye this year. sad.gif

Very sad news indeed.

Posted by: Feel_The_Fever 1st July 2009, 02:09 AM

Hopefully the fact they operated and diagnosed her so quick will provide her with a strong chance of beating this terrible disease, im sure this is a very tough time for her and her family and friends but i hope she can beat it with time, i was never a huge fan of her music but i loved sky and she had a comeback all planned with a new single coming out in july before all this happened. Fingers croosed all will go well and she will get to release and perform her new material.

Superclub Fabric looks to be the latest victim of the recession - rumours are spreading that it's gone into administration with the loss of up to 100 jobs.

I for one will be sad to see it go if only for the incredible mix CDs they release every month - some of these are thebest mix CDs ever released IMO.... sad news.

A statement from Maxi

After 15 years(!) and six albums(!!) I think we've probably made our collective point by now and that it's time to close the book and return to the library...

We've had, with you, the most unbelievable, epic and moving experience, stretching over years and tens of thousands of miles... joyful, exhilarating and empowering, we never for a moment thought an affair could last this long. Or be this powerful. Never thought for a moment that the end of this journey would be left to us either...

Quite naturally people grow, change and leave the things of youth behind them. You've not only brought us with you, but introduced us to y'children too! What're you like..?

The album 'The Dance Never Ends' was written and produced for you, as a thank you, but also as a goodbye.. the tour schedule has been particularly hectic as we attempt to visit as many territories as there are people who wanna see us.. And say thank you.

If I devoted the rest of my life to the task, I could NEVER thank you enough. I have memories that will still be with me in my next life.

But, like when writing a song, you always just 'know' when it's finished... this is and was the "Thank YOU And Goodbye' tour and to be truthful, I really hope you just pick up the ball of your life.. And RUN WITH IT!!

Once again, whether you bought or downloaded a cd, came to a show or told your mates about us... Whether from the beginning or just last week..

Thank you.

You'll be in my heart forever. Listen for my voice in future lifetimes, I only grow in your shadow, you're the sun to me.

One Love.

Maxi

Posted by: Shoat 16th March 2011, 11:04 PM

OH sad.gif

Bit of a shocker, although admittedly as far as Faithless go I'm still very much stuck in 2006 - Bombs is HUGELY under-rated and Music Matters utterly BEAUTIFUL.

Posted by: Casey__ 16th March 2011, 11:57 PM

This is a shame. I absolutely love them. <3

Agree with Shoat, 'Music Matters' is utterly beautiful.

Posted by: Euphorique 17th March 2011, 12:15 AM

Music Matters was probably the last song I liked by them, but they were obviously past their peak even back then.

Posted by: Bray 17th March 2011, 07:53 AM

ohmy.gif I have to be totally honest and say I never really liked them apart from Insomnia but it's a shame they're splitting up. I always thought they'd just keep on going forever.

Posted by: richie 17th March 2011, 09:22 AM

Hmm, I had no idea they were still going. Impressive that they managed to make what amounted to really one song last over a 15 year career.

Moody intro
Maxi Jazz raps about nothing in particular
Cut the music
Maxi Jazz says something 'profound'
Sister Bliss plays a one-fingered refrain
Bring beats back in
Repeat to fade

Still, it means they can reform for the festival circuit in a few years to bigger crowds wink.gif

Oh c'mon, I was kidding, of course they haven't done that for an entire career. Ok, 'Insomnia', 'Salva Mea', 'God is a DJ' and 'We Come 1' then...the hits that non-fans know about.

Posted by: russt68 18th March 2011, 02:30 PM

I will admit that a lot of Faithless stuff did sound very similar..... I always much preferred the music to Maxi's ramblings...... but, for any non-fans or casual listeners, you really should invest in The Dance - especially the '...Never Ends' remix bundle - it's cracking... and Sun To Me.... why this was only released as a single in, I think, Belgium.... bonkers - it's a huge stand-out track on the album.... in fact, I'd say it's my favourite Faithless song ever- and it sounds incredible on great speakers in a club or in the car - THAT bassline.... AWESOME....

Well on that you're quite right I guess. But that says more about the record-buying public than Faithless.

Im sure they will get a new greatest hits out as im sure the record company will want to cash in.

Posted by: Arrs 19th March 2011, 10:37 AM

They actually don't have a record company, their last album was released via Tesco, and I don't think Tesco have the rights for publishing Greatest Hits.

L.A. duo Redfoo and SkyBlu, otherwise known as LMFAO, have announced that they won’t be going near your ears in the foreseeable future. The announcement came early this morning, when Redfoo broke the news that LMFAO are taking a break to pursue individual interests. “I feel like we’ve been doing this for so long, five or six years,” he told news.com.au. “And we’re kind of like saying, well, let’s just do what’s natural and just kind of explore that, instead of like forcing it all the time.” Redfoo added that he and SkyBlu were headed in “different directions” and didn’t know when (or if?) the pair would ever reunite musically.

The uncle and nephew team first began performing together in 2006, releasing their debut album Party Rock in 2009, which scored a nomination for Best Dance/Electronica Album in the following year’s Grammy Awards. But it wasn’t until last year that the pair broke through with Party Rock Anthem from their second album Sorry for Party Rocking (read the in-depth ITM review here), the release also spawning your jam of the decade Sexy And I Know It. From there, the duo went about spreading the “party rock mission”, touring with our own Stereosonic in 2011 and attracting the attention of Santigold.

But all’s not lost for LMFAO devotees, as Redfoo also revealed that he has plans to release a fashion line and launch a solo career. “All the music that I’m going to make is always going to be LMFAO-ish,” he assured. “I was really passionate about bringing party music to the world, so I will always be making some kind of party music.”

Sorry but all I can say is a massive FUCK YES biggrin.gif I'm sure RedFoo's solo career will be just as awful to be honest but we can save our ears for a while.

Posted by: Bré 21st September 2012, 05:49 PM

What a surprise this thread was started by Liam!

I'm not surprised to be honest, their next album was going to flop horrifically anyway (and the pressure to produce a third massive hit would be enormous).

Posted by: Umi 21st September 2012, 05:50 PM

Eh. If Redfoo is going to be LMFAO sans that other one anyway then we're not being spared much. I don't think it will be too long until they reunite, but I can only hope they both flop on their own so that the inevitable comeback is also a failure.

Posted by: Pop B!tch 15th October 2012, 01:56 PM

Thought they would have had an attempt at album #2 - They have had some incredible success and sales and even the album really picked up after a shaky start! Was just looking at their chart history and they have had some epic chart runs - Party Rock Anthem [#1 - 71 weeks], Sexy And I Know It [#5 - 55 weeks] and an impressive 57 week chart run for the album which many dance acts struggle to match.

Posted by: Davidson 15th October 2012, 02:09 PM

They have said that they haven't split up and they are just taking a year or two to do solo projects, and they will return ''stronger than ever'' with album 2 a few years down the line, so don't get too excited guys.

Posted by: cookie_monster 15th October 2012, 02:55 PM

I feel a bit harsh but I'm so glad they split up. I HATED the dirge they turned out and all of their singles were awful (apart from Champagne Showers which is average for me). Although booo at RedFoo talking about his solo career...

QUOTE
According to The Hollywood Reporter, Kris Trindl, better known to EDM fans as Rain Man, has been removed from Krewella, and he's suing the group for at least $5 million in damages.
We've included some of the more notable statements from Rain Man's lawsuit below. Please keep in mind that this is just one side of the argument, and Rain Man is making some huge accusations. Yasmin and Jahan Yousef haven't provided their side of the story, so let's not jump to conclusions. We will get a better idea of the situation once Yasmin and Jahan release a statement.

Trindl's lawsuit says, "Kris used alcohol to try to cope with the pressure. By late summer of 2013, he knew he had a drinking problem and checked himself into a detox program and then a 30-day rehab program."

"But the Yousaf sisters didn't like the new, sober Kris, who took care of business but did not party or drink anymore," adds the lawsuit. "They thought he was depressed, although he explained it was just part of the recovery process."

The lawsuit asserts: "At this time, Udell, the Yousaf sisters and others conspired to remove Kris from the group altogether. Now that the band was successful, they figured they could always hire outside people to write and produce music for far less money than it would cost to continue splitting their income equally with Kris, as they have done (one-third to each member)."

After Kris Trindl (Rain Man) missed a flight to EDC Mexico, Krewella and Udell held an intervention for him.

"But it was not rehab for drinking, because Kris was staying sober," says the lawsuit. "They demanded he go into rehab for 'depression.'"

The lawsuit states, "It was not Kris' health or sobriety the others were thinking about, it was all about keeping him off the road so Jahan and Yasmine could establish themselves to live audiences as a duo without Kris, so they could eventually erase him completely from Krewella and reap greater financial rewards."

Soon after this incident, attorneys started getting involved. Trindl retained Dina LaPolt (deadmau5's lawyer) and litigator William Hochberg. Jahan and Yasmine retained Richard Busch. Trindl and his legal team filed this lawsuit on September 29th, four days after Busch sent them an ultimatum.

You can read the full lawsuit below. EDM.com will keep you updated on this story as it develops.

QUOTE
As we reported yesterday, Rain Man's lawsuit was just one side of the Krewella story. Earlier today, Yasmine Yousaf made a statement through two Tumblr posts. Please read Yasmine's account of the situation and formulate your own opinion. Don't allow EDM.com or anyone else to influence your thoughts. Only the people involved truly know what happened, and you know just as much as we do about Rain Man leaving Krewella. Yasmine's words are below, presented without commentary.

"Today was 1 of the most emotional days of my life. I know I don’t even have to explain why, as the whole internet-sphere knows by now, but reading so many false claims about my sister and me coming straight from Kris cut me deeper than anything I’ve experienced in my life. I can’t say much as this is a legal issue (and I hope that none of you will ever experience a lawsuit and know what it feels like not to be able to defend yourself to avoid MORE false claims) but truthfully all I really want to say right now is thank you. Even though only one side of a story was put on blast, every single person who texted, called, DMed, and emailed me today had nothing but support in their words. Without even hearing what I had to say, they already saw through the bullshit and knew the truth. That to me is more powerful than anything, this orb of love that I have surrounding me. I straight up feel like Harry Potter who is impervious to Voldemort’s ill will with the strength and care of my family, boyfriend, friends, and KREW. You guys never cease to amaze me with your genuine concern and care that you have for my sister and me. I am forever grateful to those who send us good vibes every day, I truly feel it from wherever you guys are in the world. Please just always remember: don’t buy the hype, don’t fall for a catchy headline. Just because you read it on your favorite blog doesn’t mean it true. Thank you guys again for your unending support."

[END OF FIRST TUMBLR POST; START OF SECOND TUMBLR POST]

"1 more thing;

Choosing a 'side' is terrible. I don’t want anyone to take this situation as an opportunity to pity or criticize either party. From the bottom of my heart, Kris has and always will be my brother and he knows that. I would never ask anyone to feel or speak ill of him. I hope you all can understand that it is a waste of an emotion to hate someone, and that is exactly what I am trying to avoid right now. There is only 1 real message we’ve always tried to spread, and that is to spread love. Thank you guys again for the support."

QUOTE

To our krew:

We woke up this morning to the lawsuit Kris filed against us. As you all know, there are two sides to every story. We ask our fans to please be patient and not come to any conclusions until we are able to respond to the lawsuit with the truth. Our team has advised that we don’t get into any specifics until we can properly respond to the false claims made—most importantly being that we did not kick Kris out of Krewella, he resigned. We’re having a really difficult time today. As we write this letter to you, we are in the studio working on the second album. Please hang in there with us, the truth will eventually come out. Thank you for being so supportive, we love you guys.

Love, Y & J

QUOTE(http://www.dancingastronaut.com/2015/01/disclosure-alunageorge-face-allegations-stolen-lyrics-songwriter-katie-sopher/)
Two groups that have largely avoided public spectacle are now at the center of a brewing legal debacle. A previously unknown songwriter named Katie Farrah Sopher has reached the media with claims that lyrics for the famous tunes “Latch,” “White Noise,” “You and Me,” and “Attracting Flies” of Disclosure and Alunageorge catalogues were all stolen from her and used without her consent. Sopher allegedly claims that Sean Sawyers, her “violent ex-boyfriend,” stole her songbook in 2009 and has since passed it on through the industry without her permission.

Sopher is seeking £200,000 in compensation for her lyrics which she claims were all inspired by her abusive five-year relationship. She cites domestic abuse references like “black and blue” in “White Noise” and the entire outline of “Attracting Flies” from Alunageorge’s Body Music as evidence that these lyrics were originally hers.

In response, Sawyers has denied all accusations and released a statement: “I am denying all the allegations … There is zero truth to the claims made against me. I never saw the book the claimant mentions [so] I could not have committed the alleged damages, theft, (and) copyright infringement.”

What do you think of this? ohmy.gif Can't be true surely?!? I really like Disclosure so it would be a shame for their image to be let down by this, it sounds likely to not be true anyway thankfully.

Disclosure and AlunaGeorge's 'White Noise', with writing credits to Disclosure, AlunaGeorge and James Napier

hopefully they release new material this quarter anyway, really excited to hear it dance.gif

Posted by: M¤th 19th January 2015, 11:04 PM

I can't imagine this is true, the whole thing (especially the amount she's suing for) reeks of desperation and the proof she has offered is very broad and doesn't support her case enough.

Posted by: ¡bré! 19th January 2015, 11:58 PM

This is not really news, just about every successful musician gets sued for 'plagiarism' at some point or anoter (and then you never hear about it again when it's proven to just be some attention seeker as it always is - although there are a couple of exceptions to that like Baauer's 'Harlem Shake', but that's when it actually DOES become news). If the lyrics were actually stolen why would she wait until NOW to claim it?

(also that thread title makes my face hurt)

Posted by: ¡bré! 20th January 2015, 10:46 AM

I was referring to the term 'EDM' being horrible and unnecessary in general more than Disclosure not being 'EDM' (which they are by the actual literal meaning of that term).

Posted by: titty 20th January 2015, 12:56 PM

Literal meaning maybe.

However anyone who knows anything about dance music would not class them as being EDM (thankfully).

no / yes

Disclosure produce dance music and AlunaGeorge were part of this article, plus it was reported on EDM news websites!

Posted by: ETH▲N 20th January 2015, 08:45 PM

Actually Electronic Dance Music (EDM) is the correct technical term for ‘Dance Music’, coined in 1985; it was shortened to ‘Dance Music’ in Europe, but has been used for the last 30 years stateside. magic.gif

The confusion came around 2009 onwards, when dance music began to see a revival in popularity. In the US the music industry just used the term they always had for dance music - EDM. However it has been, widely and wrongly, assumed outside of the US that ‘EDM’ refers to mainstream electro and progressive house only. wink.gif

Posted by: ¡bré! 20th January 2015, 09:00 PM

This is a primarily European forum and 'EDM' is a primarily American term. The name of the forum itself is 'dance', why can't the thread just be called 'dance news'?

Posted by: ► ▲ N 20th January 2015, 09:23 PM

can we not turn this into an argument of whether the correct term is EDM or dance music? Both are correct. I'll change it to 'news' to stop people arguing, I thought people had accepted the term EDM by now.

I actually suggested calling this the electronic dance music forum but it the forum name was instead changed to dance, electro and house by the admins.

back on topic from this post guys magic.gif

Disclosure deny stealing lyrics, writing this on their Facebook

QUOTE
Hi all,

Just wanted to post a little something for our fans who may have read the blogs in the last couple of days and help clear up some speculation that has been circulating, to do with whether or not we wrote the lyrics to some of our songs.

Firstly we want to make it very clear that every Disclosure song we have put our names to has been written by us. We sometimes write lyrics and melodies along-side whoever the featured singer may be (i.e. Sam, Eliza etc) and the great Mr. Jimmy Napes, but that is it. When we do, we always make sure everyone gets proper credit. We take great pride in our self sufficiency, our work and the way we work, and it’s incredibly frustrating when someone tries to take that away from us, by claiming we stole even one word or one note of our music from anyone.

We’d much rather be working on more music than commenting on these type of things, but it felt like we had no choice…

So, just to be clear, all allegations made against us to do with this subject are completely false, as anyone we have ever worked with will back up. We didn’t get into this industry to steal other people’s ideas and we haven’t – we are musicians, artists and producers.

In better news… Album 2 is niiiiicely underway!

well done to the following representing dance music at the Grammys cheer.gif even if the All of Me remix really isn't all that great. Rather Be is fully deserving of its win though

Best Dance/Electronic Album
Aphex Twin - Syro

Best Dance Recording

Tijs Michiel Verwest, remixer
John Legend – "All Of Me (Tiesto's Birthday Treatment Remix)"

Tiesto used to be the richest DJ in the world but it looks as if Calvin Harris has overtaken his net worth!

Harris is now worth $110m ; 5 million dollars more than Tiesto. Avicii is in 3rd place with "only" $75m (which is still a LOT of money).

Not all that surprising, I imagine a fair amount of his worth is being built up by his growing advertisement; Calvin Klein etc. He's become more than just a DJ and has branched into occasional modelling of recent, so I guess that boosts his royalties.

Hello world,

Thank you for letting me fulfil so many of my dreams. I will be forever grateful to have experienced and accomplished all that I have with the help of the team around me and my beloved fans. Thank you to all my peers in the business for building a new movement that took the world by storm and I was lucky enough to be in the middle of it. Thank you to all my partners through the years who believed in what I have created and wanted to amplify my work to a truly global presence.

First and foremost thank you to my brother and partner Ash, its truly been a crazy run and its only been possible through our collaborative efforts, yin and yang, brother to brother manager to artist. I will always appreciate this road with you no matter where it leads from here. I could write so much more but our journey is far from finished.

Thank you to everyone at At Night, a special thanks to everyone who has been a part of the team since day one and without your hard dedicated work I wouldn’t be here. Thank you especially to Carl Vernersson, Filip Holm, Marcus Lindgren, Victor Lee and Panos Ayassotelis.

Thank you to the teams of Johnny Tenander, Per Sundin, Max Hole, Neil Jacobson and Joakim Johansson in no particular order. Your loyalty and hard work on the label and publishing fronts have allowed me to always feel like we have had someone backing us in your court, and that has given me the musical confidence I’ve needed. Thank you.

Thank you Robb Harker, Malik Adunni, David Brady, Andrew Mckeough, Rob Woo and Felix Alfonzo – you helped introduce touring to me in as much of a functional way possible for a kid my age and my road could have been alot darker if it wasnt for your personal support at such a crucial point. Thank you Semi Baddredine for all your personal support, talks and help in me growing up. I have a weird feeling i could be dead If it wasn’t for you and I will always love and support you.

Thank you to Ciara Davy, Michael “Curly” Jobson and the MJM team, Harry Bird and Charlie Alves for making my touring years amazing during the best of times and durable during the worst. I hope we will find a way to keep on working together.

Thank you to all artists, musicians and songwriters who have helped me develop musically and personally, the list is long but there is no one I’ve worked with where I haven’t learnt something.

A huge thank you to all my friends in the industry. Thank you Jesse Waits at XS for having been such a huge friend to me and a rock in stormy waters. Also huge thanks in no particular order to Jonathan Schwartz, Austin Leeds, Pete Moutso, Dave Grutman, Noah Tepperberg, Jason Strauss, Sean Christie, Carlos Correal, Rob Fernandez, Eddie Dean, Adam Russakoff, Mike Satsky, Trecia Laird, Lisa Pillette, Marcella Barrett, Zoe Stainsby, Joe Bellioti, Yann and Romain Pissenem, John and Paul in Ibiza, Fricko, Sean, Marcus, Awat, Lucas, Ludde, Calle, Johannes, Filip, Levan, Otto, Oliver, my brothers David and Anton, my sister Linda, My parents Anki and Klas. Thank you to all the ones I didn’t include in this moment. There has been too many people to mention in one sitting that had an impact on me in this industry and Im sorry I’m forgetting some of you. But last but not least thank you to every fan who has ever bought a ticket or snuck in, bought a song or downloaded it, commented on posts or hated at them. Its your thoughts and ideas about the music that helped me evolve and I do owe everything I have to you.

My path has been filled with success but it hasn’t come without its bumps. I’ve become an adult while growing as an artist, I’ve come to know myself better and realize that there’s so much I want to do with my life. I have strong interests in different areas but there’s so little time to explore them.

Two weeks ago, I took the time to drive across the U.S. with my friends and team, to just look and see and think about things in a new way. It really helped me realize that I needed to make the change that I’d been struggling with for a while.

My choices and career have never been driven by material things, although I’m grateful for all the opportunities and comforts my success has availed me. I know I am blessed to be able to travel all around the world and perform, but I have too little left for the life of a real person behind the artist.

I will however never let go of music – I will continue to speak to my fans through it, but I’ve decided this 2016 run will be my last tour and last shows. Let’s make them go out with a bang!

One part of me can never say never, I could be back …but I won’t be right back.

Yours forever,

Tim Bergling / Avicii

P.S. I’ve got a new phone so you can text me re all this +46769436383. Please bare with me I might not be super quick to reply but I’ll read every text. X

Justin Bieber retired from music in December 2013.
Jay-Z retired from music in 2003.
50 Cent retired in September 2007.

Musicians aren't exactly ones to keep their word.

Although Avicii could still keep making music - he just doesn't have to do the whole touring/publicity thing. There are tons of pop stars out there who would love to work with him. I'm sure we'll hear from him again.

beatport's parent company sfx filed for bankruptcy protection earlier this year and the site was due to be auctioned off last week, but that has now been suspended for now~

yesterday it was announced that the streaming, news and events sections of the site are to be scrapped on friday with half the workforce being made redundant, while today beatport’s digital distribution company - baseware - is folding with immediate effect. the consequence of this is that all of the SPINNIN’ (and its sub labels like musical freedom) catalogue is no longer available to buy O.o

it’s hard to see how much longer the site can continue as going concern, unless new ownership can be found promptly, with the prospect of a remarkable collapse this summer set to rock the dance music community~

On May 13, we will no longer offer our Streaming, Video, News, and Events features, and all traffic to these sites will redirect to the Beatport Store homepage.

We’d like to thank all the loyal listeners, readers, and viewers who have come to enjoy these services, as well as all the labels, artists, and promoters who have participated in them. We regret any inconvenience this may cause.

An Update on Beatport Services

Today, we have an important update regarding the Beatport platform and the services we offer.

When Beatport was acquired three years ago, part of the vision was to create a broad digital platform for DJs to engage fans of electronic music wherever they may be. The original Beatport Store and the Beatport brand became the foundation for this vision, upon which we added a streaming music service, mobile app, a video livestreaming platform, and a relaunched news and media property.

We have learned through this process however, that in our effort to be so many different things, we lost focus on bringing the best possible service and capabilities to our most loyal customers: the DJ community. As such, we have determined to invest in what is most important to our business and our customers, rather than adding yet another choice to a sea of streaming services.

This means we will be shutting down the Streaming service and mobile app, Beatport News, the Video livestreaming platform, and the Events section effective May 13, 2016. Additionally, while we plan to continue considering offers for Beatport, the previously detailed auction process will be suspended for now. We’d like to give our heartfelt thanks to all of the loyal listeners, readers, and viewers who have come to enjoy these services over the past year, as well as all the labels, artists, and promoters who have participated in them.

Going forward, we will refocus our attention and resources on our flagship business, the Beatport Store. We’ve already made noticeable improvements in site performance, with our most-used features (track, release, artist, and genre pages) running up to 51% faster.

For over 12 years, the Beatport Store has served DJs and the electronic music community. As a new generation of artists, performers, and sounds develop and grow, inspired by the leaders of today and the past, the Beatport Store will continue to be there to support the music and inspire the community.

Superstar DJ Calvin Harris was taken to hospital in the United States after being injured in a car crash.

He was a passenger in a Cadillac in Los Angeles when it collided with a Volkswagen Beetle at about 11:00 local time on Friday, according to celebrity news website TMZ.com.

It reported that Harris, who is from Dumfries, suffered a cut in the incident.

He had to pull out of a performance at the Omnia nightclub in Las Vegas.

A statement on the artist's official Facebook page said: "Adam's transport was involved in a collision this evening on the way to the airport. As a result he will be unable to perform at Omnia tonight. He has been examined by doctors and told to rest for a few days - Calvin HQ."

The Beetle was reportedly driven by a 16-year-old girl and had crossed the centre line before the crash.

Indie artist White Hinderland is pursuing legal action for copyright infringement against Justin Bieber and his single “Sorry,” which Skrillex produced. TMZ reports that the suit is over the use of a vocal sample and the general composition of the track in its independent parts, though we were unable to locate the court documents for the case at this time.

The use of White Hinderland’s vocal sample, originally from the track “Ring the Bell,” is clear in “Sorry,” but music law is a ferocious beast that involves many moving parts. Hinderland claims she sent Bieber’s team a notice of her distaste for the situation closer to the track’s release, but has waited until now to follow through with legal action.

Before we jump to conclusions, it is important to note that even direct copying is not an easy case. The Fair Use defense sure to be raised by the defendant’s legal counsel will take many factors into account, likely revolving around the transformative nature of “Sorry” from “Ring the Bell,” the minimal amount of “Ring the Bell” that was copied, and the presumably non-existent market effect Bieber’s song has on “Ring the Bell.” While it would be impossible for us to speculate the outcome of this case, we can confidently say that this issue may not be as clear-cut as many publications have branded it.

Apprently David Bowie was talking about working with Skrillex before he passed away. I doubt he would have been prepared to work with someone who uncredited/ripped-off samples like this - so I am inclined to believe that he didn't as he demonstrated in this tweet: https://twitter.com/skrillex/status/736328422901714944

Though their relationship seemed perfect on the surface, it seems that some underlying roughness has resulted in Calvin Harris & Taylor Swift breaking up.

The news was first reported by People, and corroborated by Billboard.

The two were dating for 15 months and just called it quits. They celebrated their one-year anniversary not too long ago on a tropical island, and Taylor Swift was also seen supporting Calvin Harris in a big way at Coachella – even helping to tease his latest release with Rihanna. Despite being the now former richest couple in music, things don’t always work out.

But the fact remains…

Calvin Harris & Taylor Swift have broken up!

“There was no drama. Things just don’t work out sometimes,” says an insider.

This is good news for any die-hard Taylor Swift fans who have been begging for her next breakup single/album.

The legendary DJ Fresh has formally announced his retirement from touring, citing multiple reasons including his health, and an industry that he believes to be “fake” and “soul destroying.” The British producer will finish out his remaining dates in 2016, before going on indefinite hiatus in January.

DJ Fresh got his start as part of pioneering drum ‘n’ bass act Bad Company, alongside Maldini, dBridge, and Vegas. In 2006, he released his acclaimed solo album, Escape From Planet Monday. In the years after, he’s continued pursuing his solo career, finding widespread commercial success with huge singles like “Gold Dust” (which Flux Pavilion iconically remixed), “Louder,” “Hot Right Now,” and “Earthquake” alongside Diplo.

It is unclear at this time if DJ Fresh will continue releasing music during his hiatus. Read his full statement below.

AVICII’S “LEVELS” TURNS 5 YEARS OLD!

If you’ve never heard Avicii’s “Levels” at this point in time, I’m questioning what you’re doing reading this article. Perhaps one of the most iconic tracks in all of electronic music, “Levels” was first played in its final form in March 2011, during Avicii’s set at Ultra Music Festival. The track was officially released in October of that year, and made many fall in love with EDM. Its mainstream success allowed it to reach millions of people worldwide, opening up a gateway to a whole new community many had previously never been exposed to.

Progressive house was at a peak about 4ish years ago, with acts like Swedish House Mafia, Alesso, and, of course, Avicii, regularly gracing mainstage revelers with melodic, emotional sets. Big-room was still in its early stages of conception, with the occasional track like W&W’s “Thunder” making its way into the mix. However, it was in no way the main focus of the set, as melodic, progressive tracks like “Levels” made up the majority of these headlining spots. Artists realized its happy-go-lucky sounds were what people wanted to hear, and, as is the case with any ‘fad’ in music, many sought to replicate its vibes, shifting the path of electronic music towards progressive house.

However, the success and support that “Levels” received was not just limited to prog-house, as it broke through numerous barriers and spawned remixes from all across the dance music community, with Skrillex’s remix being one of the most notable. At least for me personally, it introduced me to the early sounds of dubstep, opening up a whole new genre that still finds ways to impress me to this day.

Love it or hate it, the influence that “Levels” had on the scene was unparalleled, and undoubtedly laid the foundations for the modern scene, paving the way for what it is today. Relive the classic track below!

hard to believe it's been five years since 'Levels' broke out and started to turn Avicii into the massive name he is. It's still one of my favourite tracks ever too! wub.gif

DIE ANTWOORD REVEALS PLANS TO BREAK UP

Watkin Tudor Jones and Anri Du Toit are two of the biggest names in music, but you know them better as Ninja and Yolandi Vi$$er of Die Antwoord. Since their startling aesthetic and tongue-in-cheek productions began captivating minds in 2009, the endeavor was only envisioned to be a five album project, and they’re staying true to their original intent. Ninja and Yolandi have just announced that in September 2017, Die Antwoord is over.

“Die Antwoord dies on that day. It’s all over. I feel beautiful about it. I’m not scared of the end. I’m a Ninja. I’m not scared of death.”

Still, their planned disbandment isn’t going to stop at a couple blog posts documenting the event. No, Die Antwoord is planning a massive art exhibition in The Museum of Contemporary Modern Art Africa, no doubt including their long-time muse and collaborator Roger Ballen, which will coincide with a fifth studio album. They’re also going to release a movie depicting the odyssey of Die Antwoord from birth to death, but we wouldn’t expect anything less from these masters of all things high-concept. In fact, the movie South African Ninja has been in the making for the last 10 years, long before Die Antwoord was a thing.

“That’s been our well that we’ve been drinking from and drawing from since the beginning of Die Antwoord. We actually started writing it before Die Antwoord. So, it’s been in the background for all of our ideas, which have all come from this film. It’s a South African gangster film that has African ninjas in it. Everything in the film is fictitious, like a regular movie, but it’s hard and raw, and everything has some parallel to our lives, so it’s got a surreal connection to everything.”

However, the death of Die Antwoord doesn’t necessarily mean the death of Ninja, Yolandi, or even DJ Hi Tek (now known as God). These characters have become so ingrained in Jones and Du Toit, that it would make sense for each to continue down their own path with collaborations and solo work. But Watkin Tudor Jones isn’t one to dwell on a project, and I wouldn’t be surprised to see a new alias born from the death of Die Antwoord. (If you’re feeling frisky to learn more about the group’s history, this documentary is just what you need.)

Have a listen to “Fat Faded f*** Face,” Die Antwoord’s newest single before Mount Ninji and Da Nice Time Kid releases on September 16th.

Tom Swoon announces end of career in formal statement preceding manslaughter trial

Tom Swoon broke the silence that followed his December 2017 arrest in a new statement that offers fans an update on Swoon’s career, and the current state of his legal proceedings. Swoon was detained by police on December 5, 2017 after driving under the influence of alcohol, causing a fatal accident that led to the death of one person. “I have pleaded guilty and got immediately arrested,” Swoon writes in the post, published to his Facebook page. Swoon now awaits trial.

“I am writing this letter because I want to apologize from the bottom of my heart, first and foremost to the family that has lost their loved one” Swoon continues, “I am also sorry that I’ve let all of you down.” Swoon goes on to acknowledge the “very harsh verdict” that he will soon face, and credits his expected prison sentence as a central influencing factor in his decision to “end the Tom Swoon project.”
“It’s time for me to focus on things way more important than a musical career,” Swoon concludes the announcement, “I am sorry that it all ended so quick…and in such a tragic way.”

He's not very famous here but he was somewhat of a name in dance music, making it to #47 in last year's DJ Mag Top 100 and previously peaked at #46 in 2015. He had tracks on Spinnin' and Ultra Records (and other smaller labels). I didn't hear of this last December so rather shocking news. ohmy.gif

You may have heard of him from his two BJSC entries:
DNQ // Tom Swoon - Wings (Myon & Shane 54 Summer Of Love Mix) (feat. Taylr Renee) { Jayrusalem // LVIII }

I remember hearing about this a while ago, what he did was completely unforgiveable, but, I am glad he's owning up to his shit, accepting it and embracing what's about to come to him. He has some f***ing balls, which is more than can be said for some people in his position. I can't help but feel sorry for him, but at the end of the day, it is his own fault. It's a real shame, he had some talent and was really beginning to gain some traction.

Hardwell has quit touring.

QUOTE
Hello world,

Ever since I was a little kid I dreamed of the life I live this very moment. A life filled with music, real human interaction and the freedom to express myself in the purest form I know.
I have grown from an ambitious kid with everything to gain into the 30-year old I am today whilst evolving as an artist with triple the speed of my aging process. Over the past few years I’ve come to know myself better and better and over time I realized that there’s still so much I want to share with my family and friends, so many roads I’d like to explore, but being Hardwell 24/7 leaves too little energy, love, creativity and attention for my life as a normal person to do so.

This is why I have decided to clear my schedule indefinitely to be completely liberated from targets, interviews, deadlines, release dates, etc. I’ve always dealt with all the pressure that comes with the heavy touring schedule, but for now, it felt too much, like a never ending rollercoaster ride. I always try to give myself 200% and in order to keep doing that, and feeding my creativity, I need some time off to be me, the person behind the artist and reflect on everything that happened the last few years. That means my touring schedule has ended yesterday on Ibiza on September 6th, 2018 with a bang. However, I will still do my All Ages show in the Ziggo Dome during Amsterdam Dance Event on the 18th of October 2018.

I’ll keep making music and I will never let go of it and will always aim to continue to connect with my fans through it.

Last but not least I want to thank every single one of my fans for the support so far. It is your love and dedication for all I’ve put out there that helped me evolve in more ways than I ever could have imagined, and I realize that I do owe everything to you all. My sincerest hope is that we will be able to continue this journey together. I want to come back stronger than ever, but for now, I’m just going to be me for a while.

From DJ Mag:

QUOTE
Deadmau5 has released a statement saying that he is to take time out of the spotlight.

Posting on Twitter earlier today, the producer wrote: “This has been a very difficult period and I sincerely apologize for my comments which were completely offensive and I take full responsibility for.”

He continues: “Now it’s time for me to deal with my own personal issues including finally addressing my own mental health challenges that I have wrestled with for the past several years.”

Admitting that he has fallen short of his goal to “uplift my community,” he says that after consulting with friends and family, he has decided that he should seek professional help to deal with his problems.

“Again I apologize to all of those I have offended and I will be going off the radar and taking the time necessary to work on myself.”

The move comes after the producer faced wide criticism for now-deleted tweets of a homophobic and transphobic nature, while he also made ableist remarks about the music of producer Slushii.

Posted by: DANKENSTEIN 14th October 2018, 09:24 PM

for quite a while now he's been somewhat of a controversial figure on twitter and acting like a dick, so this is probably the best move for him at the moment, especially if he has mental health issues of his own too.

hopefully he can come back big as ever when he's ready, as he makes terrific music. his release from a few months ago 'Monophobia' is outstanding so he's still got it in that department.

Australian DJ Adam Sky has died in an accident while on holiday on the Indonesian island of Bali.
The 42-year-old is said to have been badly hurt trying to help a friend who had suffered multiple injuries.
While rushing to aid her, he smashed through a glass door, causing him to suffer severe cuts and blood loss, Nine News reported.
According to the site the female friend had fallen several metres from their private terrace.
The woman survived and was taken to hospital, Indonesian media report.
A statement confirming the Singapore-based DJ's death has been posted to his official Facebook page.

Tributes on the DJ's social media accounts praised him as a "legend," and a great friend and colleague.
"You always burned so brightly," one read, while another described him as an "amazing guy with a heart of gold".
The BBC has contacted his management for comment.

Sky - real name Adam Neat - was ranked as the third most popular DJ in Asia last year, according to his website.
The site quotes JUICE Magazine Asia describing him as a "rising Aussie superstar DJ" and says he worked with well-known artists such as Fat Boy Slim, David Guetta and The Scissor Sisters.
His club anthems include Illogical, Larynx and Kreatine.

QUOTE
Veteran electronic producer ARTY is suing Marshmello, claiming one of the masked producer’s biggest hits, the Bastille-assisted “Happier,” is actually plagiarized. The terms of the suit claim that Marshmello and Bastille used remixed elements of ARTY’s 2014 remix of “I Lived” by OneRepublic.
This particular lawsuit is unique, in that the legal dispute is mainly anchored to the song’s beat and other components, as opposed to the underlying composition. While ARTY’s remix was an undoubted success in 2014, “Happier” managed to claim the top spot on the dance music charts for 31 consecutive weeks in 2018, and grab a double-platinum certification as a result.
According to The Tennessean, the publication that broke the story, ARTY and Marshmello’s shared music publisher, Kobalt Music, as well as
Daniel Campbell Smith, co-founder of Bastille, are named as co-defendants in the suit. Upon inspection of the two songs, both drops share suspiciously similar arrangements, and Redditors were even quick to point out the similarity months before the lawsuit was officially brought to court.

Oh my, they actually do sound really similar! ohmy.gif Although I'm not sure if this lawsuit will actually get anywhere.

Omar Souleyman, the Syrian singer famous for his fusion of traditional dabke music with electronic beats, has been arrested on terrorism charges, The Guardian reports.

The artist, whose real name is Omar Almasikh, was arrested by local authorities during a raid of his home in the south eastern Turkish city of Urfa, near the Syrian border.

Souleyman’s manager confirmed the reason for his arrest this to AFP, stating that the artist was being questioned over alleged involvement with the PKK, or Kurdistan Workers' Party, who are proscribed as a terrorist organisation by Ankara, the US, UK and EU.

According to the Guardian, Souleyman’s son has denied the terrorism charges made against his father, stating that he has no political affiliations and that a “malicious report” had been filed against him.

At the time of writing, Souleyman has reportedly not yet returned home, though his manager has reportedly said that he expects him to be released later today (17th November).

The 55-year-old artist, who has toured the world and worked with artists including Four Tet, Gorillaz’ Damon Albarn, Diplo, Björk and Gilles Peterson, reportedly underwent a health check at a local hospital before being taken by authorities for further questioning.

Souleyman left Syria along with millions of others in the midst of the country’s civil war. His music became an international sensation, and he has performed at festivals including Glastonbury and Pitchfork Music Festival. Listen to his hit ‘Warni Warni’ below

Famed Dutch Trance DJ Ferry Corsten has been given one of the Dutch Royal Family’s highest honors: The Order Of Oranje-Nassau. Similar to being knighted by the British Royal Family, those in The Order Of Oranje-Nassau have made significant cultural contributions to their country and beyond.

Corsten is the third Dutch DJ to receive the honor followed by Armin Van Buuren in 2011 and Tiësto in 2003. Peter Oskam, the mayor of Capelle aan den IJssel, led a surprise ceremony in the city on behalf of King Willem-Alexander.

“I can’t put into words how much of an honour being presented with this award is for me. As a passionately proud Dutch native and as an artist who has just wanted to share all the beautiful sides of dance music with the world since day one. To be recognised by the Dutch Royal family means so much. Thank you,” said Corsten when accepting the award on stage.

Next month, Corsten will embark on his “What The F” tour that will see him play music spanning his entire career. Now those shows are sure to be extra special as he celebrates this incredible honor with dance floors all over the world.

Controversial statement about Coachella was thrown by Diplo:

QUOTE
Diplo thinks Coachella is “having a hard time booking headliners”
“We kind of left the era of great superhero acts, like the Red Hot Chili Peppers or Daft Punk”

Diplo has admitted that he was underwhelmed by this year’s Coachella lineup — and thinks the festival must be “having a hard time” booking headline acts. The solo artist, DJ and songwriter — who has written and produced hits for stars including Beyoncé, Madonna, Britney Spears and Justin Bieber — shared his opinion of the 2023 instalment in a new interview. According to Diplo, while the most recent headline acts, including Bad Bunny and BLACKPINK, are “cool”, they can’t be compared to previous headliners including Red Hot Chili Peppers and Daft Punk.

“I think I’m a little too old for Coachella,” he told The Hollywood Reporter. “This is the oldest I ever felt at Coachella. It’s really fun. I love going with the general population and seeing new bands. But it’s just too much.”

“I think they honestly might be having a hard time booking headliners,” he continued. “There’s not much left. We kind of left the era of great superhero acts, like the Red Hot Chili Peppers or Daft Punk … Now they book acts like Bad Bunny and Blackpink, who are cool, but they’re just the most Top 40 there is. It’s almost like they’re stadium acts.” Both Red Hot Chili Peppers and Daft Punk have accumulated numerous Top 40 hits throughout their respective careers, and embarked on a variety of stadium tours.

Explaining why he thinks the festival organisers may be ‘struggling’ to book acts he deems worthy of the headline slot, Diplo also stated that he believes “there’s not a lot of really culturally relevant new acts” around at the moment.

“I saw Labrinth. That was amazing. I think that represents real Coachella,” he added. “He’s part of the zeitgeist. But the rest of it just felt like they had to scramble to find things that were cultural touchstones, but also could bring a big crowd in … I think I once said on Jimmy Fallon, ‘Coachella is the influencer Survivor’. This year felt like that more than ever.”

Headliners for this year’s Coachella also featured Frank Ocean — who performed his first set in six years at the first weekend, but was replaced by a recently-reunited Blink-182 at the second weekend after suffering an injury on festival grounds.

“He doesn’t really care about his fans, to give them a concert,” the DJ said, sharing his take on Ocean’s cancelled set. “It was a show where the ice rink didn’t work and that’s all it needs to be … He has one of the best voices I’ve ever heard. I really think he just doesn’t really care about shows. I think that’s Coachella’s fault.”

Earlier this year, Diplo — whose real name is Thomas Wesley Pentz — clarified his response to Beyoncé’s Grammy win, following speculation that he said “they bought that” when the singer’s name was announced. “[Beyoncé] deserves her flowers… and when she won I was just proud to see my nomination on the screen in the huge arena,” he wrote on Instagram at the time.

In other Coachella news, the 2023 instalment of the festival saw some iconic moments take place, including Zendaya’s first live performance in eight years with Labrinth, Dave Grohl‘s cameo appearance with Wet Leg, and Björk’s enchanting performance with over 800 drones.

OLAN and her complaint on Above & Beyond at Twitter:

ICYDK, her current 2nd popular track at Spotify was her song ripped of from one of Above & Beyond's Group Therapy episodes.
Honestly, never heard of her music, but it seems she had a lot of releases at Anjunabeats. So, I think the way she complained went a little bit too far...

Posted by: danæ 5th June 2023, 10:34 AM

yikes that’s not a good look on her to trash on the record label owners that have given her much support

pretty sure A&B do write their own songs too

Posted by: lewistgreen 5th June 2023, 06:08 PM

I assume she's referring to her Under Pressure remix with Andrew Bayer? Her release is in her Top Songs, as is the A&B release from their radio show. Their version has attracted marginally more streams than the official release which is why it's in her top songs. Considering the track has been released on Anjunabeats which is A&B's actual label you'd think she'd be a bit more grateful than dragging them through the dirt here. Calling their radio show 'stupid' is a stupid move in itself considering A&B are responsible for its release in the first place. I can see what she means that she'd like to personalise her Spotify list but take that up with them/the label offline don't put it in a public space as it just screams the wrong message.

QUOTE
Diplo has been accused of distributing nude photographs of a woman without her permission, it has emerged.

As reported by Pitchfork, the DJ was named in a police report filed with the Los Angeles Police Department in August, and in November that case was submitted to the Los Angeles city attorney’s office, where it is currently under review.

The woman, Shelly Auguste, has been in a legal battle with the producer – real name Thomas Wesley Pentz – since 2020. She had previously accused him of distributing revenge porn, but Pentz was not charged criminally on that occasion.

Diplo denied the original allegations in 2021.

In the new case, Auguste is suing Pentz for sexual battery, gender violence, intentional intrusion into private affairs, battery, assault, defamation, intentional infliction of emotional distress and fraud. In addition, he is being accused of acting in violation of the Ralph Civil Rights Act and the Tom Bane Civil Rights Act. A civil trial is scheduled for April 2024.

Diplo is also suing Auguste for stalking, trespassing and distributing private materials in a suit filed in April 2021. That claim alleged that Auguste is “dangerously unstable” and states that “she made relentless efforts to communicate with him” after he ended their relationship.

In response to the new allegations, Diplo’s attorney, Bryan J. Freedman, said: “For more than three years, Shelly Auguste has been orchestrating an ongoing smear campaign against Wes—and this is just more of the same.”

“Now, Ms. Auguste is at it yet again. But Wes will defend himself, and, just as he has done every time Ms. Auguste has defamed, harassed and attacked him and his family, he will win.”

According to Auguste’s account, the two met online in 2014 and their correspondence depended on her sending him nude photos. She alleges that he filmed them having sex in April 2019 without her consent and ejaculated inside her without consent.

There is another encounter described in Auguste’s suit from July 2019 when Diplo is said to have penetrated her without consent while she “tried to fight him off”, before running out of the hotel room in tears.

In November 2020, Auguste was granted a temporary restraining order against Diplo, and he has now secured one against her.

Shortly after Auguste received the order, Freedman said she “has been harassing [Diplo]and his family for more than a year and has repeatedly refused to stop doing so.”

In January 2021, the two signed a dual restraining order agreement. In September 2022, Auguste was found to have breached the agreement with social media posts and Diplo was consequently awarded a $1.2 million payment.

Auguste filed her new claim on August 18 this year, stating she was “the victim of revenge porn”. The report notes that Auguste told a police officer that she “sent […] nude videos and photographs to [Diplo] voluntarily. Those items were for him only and not to distribute to others.” She added that he “distributed some of the nude videos and photographs of her online.”

The report continues that Auguste “believes that [Diplo] is distributing the nude photographs because he is mad at her for recently filing legal action against him. She stated that he wants to harass and embarrass her.”

The allegations didn't seem to stick / result in any real consequences the last time (ngl I kind of forgot about it myself, I very rarely see it being brought up...) so I'm not sure they will this time either especially if it's coming from the same accuser.

Former Indonesian mainstage DJ Angger Dimas, known for his Phat Brahms remake with Steve Aoki, announced the death of his 6-year old son Dante caused by drowning. Dimas is now looking for justice due to the innatural cause of death as the local police are restricting the CCTV near the crime scene.

This is pretty the same case as Italian hardstyle DJ Daniele Mondello, who are still looking for the truth of his wife (DJ Express Viviana) and his son's death in 2020, except Viviana was convicted of her son's murderer, then commited suicide.
