We have a new entry to the album chart this week: The Very Best of Madonna: Radio Waves 1984-1995. It's an independent release from 2016 and seems to feature live versions of songs within the years stated in the title. No idea why it's charting now - me and Jay were discussing it and we think it's an error from the OCC, particularly as The Immaculate Collection has suddenly disappeared. Nevertheless, it becomes Madonna's 29th charting album. Making another appearance in the midweek update today at #191! |

Did this for Kylie so here it is for Madonna: a look at where some Madonna's singles (post-1998) may have charted if released a week earlier or later (and still sold the same amount of copies):
QUOTE Frozen: 196,604 (#1) One week earlier: #2 One week later: #1 Ray of Light: 76,000 (#2) One week earlier: #2 (4k behind) One week later: #1 (1k ahead) Drowned World / Substitute for Love: 34,000 (#10) One week earlier: #8/9 One week later: Not Top 10 The Power of Goodbye: 58,000 (#6) One week earlier: #7 One week later: #8/9 Nothing Really Matters: 63,000 (#7) One week earlier: #8 One week later: #6/7 Beautiful Stranger: 136,000 (#2) One week earlier: #2 One week later: #1 (1k lead) American Pie: 139,000 (#1) One week earlier: #2 One week later: #1 Music: 114,925 (#1) One week earlier: #3 One week later: #1 Don't Tell Me: 66,000 (#4) One week earlier: #4 One week later: #4 What It Feels Like for a Girl: 31,000 (#7) One week earlier: #8 One week later: #7 Die Another Day: 52,500 (#3) One week earlier: #5 One week later: #4 American Life: 30,000 (#2) One week earlier: #3 One week later: #2 Hollywood: 26,500 (#2) One week earlier: #3 One week later: #3 Me Against the Music: 48,751 (#2) One week earlier: #1 One week later: #4 Love Profusion: 15,361 (#11) One week earlier: #8 One week later: Not Top 10 Hung Up: 105,128 (#1) [physical] One week earlier: #1 One week later: #1 Sorry: 36,928 (#1) One week earlier: #1 One week later: #2 Get Together: 17,922 (#7) One week earlier: #6 One week later: #6 Jump: 13,864 (#9) One week earlier: #7 One week later: #9 4 Minutes: 49,771 (#1) [physical] One week earlier: #1 One week later: #1 Give It 2 Me: 19,310 (#7) One week earlier: #7 One week later: #6 Celebration: 41,727 (#3) One week earlier: #4 One week later: #2 No major changes for most of them. 'Frozen' would have lost out to 'Brimful of Asha' (208k) if released a week earlier. Very close for 'Ray of Light' either the week before or after, whereas it was 30k behind #1 (All Saints' 'Under the Bridge') on its actual chart week. Unlucky for 'Love Profusion' - if it did reach #8 it would have given Madonna an unbroken string of 24 Top 10s between 'You Must Love Me' and 'Give It 2 Me'. |

Ray of Light: 138,000 (#1) One week earlier: #1 One week later: #1 Music 151,891 (#1) One week earlier: #1 One week later: #1 GHV2 88,500 (#2) One week earlier: #1 One week later: #3 American Life 65,013 (#1) One week earlier: #1 One week later: #1 Confessions on a Dancefloor 217,610 (#1) One week earlier: #1 One week later: #1 Hard Candy 94,655 (#1) One week earlier: #1 One week later: #1 Celebration 77,299 (#1) One week earlier: #2 One week later: #1 MDNA 56,335 (#1) One week earlier: #1 One week later: #1 Rebel Heart 37,245 (#2) One week earlier: #2 One week later: #1 Madame X 27,227 (#2) One week earlier: #2 (363 behind) One week later: #1 Rebel Heart and Madame X should have released a week later. Imagine if Madame X had lost out by 400 copies to Lewis Capaldi though! |

so... i have a contact who works in the industry and he gave me some tea about the top 20 biggest Madonna songs in the UK
the old songs (pre 1994) stats are not the total of course because he only has access to the catalog from that year to the present by that logic all the songs released post 1994 have its total stats. Into the Groove (Gold, 176,982, 35K yearly average) Like A Virgin (Gold, 196,646, 38-40K) Holiday (Gold, 217,190, 41K) Like A Prayer (Gold, 434,013, 67K) Crazy For You (Gold, 160,402, 28K) Hung Up (Platinum, 744,730, 37K) Vogue (Gold, 222,426, 37K) True Blue (105,014, 19K) 4 Minutes (Plat, 638,169, 41K) Frozen (608,281, 17K) Beautiful Stranger (556,946, 6K) La Isla Bonita (166,276, 30K) Material Girl (220,473, 50K) Music (454,333, 12K) American Pie (412,464, 9K) Who's That Girl (40,009, 6K) Don't Cry for Me Argentina (379,083, 9K) Borderline (96,826, 17K) Ray of Light (340,142, 16K) |

Thank you very much for posting! I'll have a closer look at the figures later and see if I can work out some combined totals for the pre-1994 songs.

Into the Groove (Gold, 176,982, 35K yearly average)
Estimated sales for the 80s were 766k, which would put its total on 943k to date. However, the OCC must have another estimate for its 80s sales as they had it on 957k as of August 2018. If it's averaging 35k a year, the OCC should have its total at 992k to date. Like A Virgin (Gold, 196,646, 38-40K) Estimated sales for the 80s are 741k, putting its total at 938k to date. Seems in line with the 892k from August 2018 and 925k from April 2019. A 40k yearly average puts its total on 932k. Holiday (Gold, 217,190, 41K) Estimated sales for the 80s were 537k. It missed the Top 100 year end for 1991 so less than ~100k sales. Like 'Into the Groove', the OCC must have other figures for its pre-1994 total as they had 'Holiday' on 878k as of August 2018. A 41k yearly average would put its total on 919k. Like A Prayer (Gold, 434,013, 67K) Estimated sales for the 80s were 412k, which would put its sales on 846k to date. The OCC had its total as 850k in April 2019, so the OCC's 80s estimate differs slightly. They had it on 792k as of August 2018, so 67k yearly average would put it on 859k to date. Crazy For You (Gold, 160,402, 28K) Estimated sales for the 80s were 494k and 179k for 1991, which puts its total at 833k. That's 67k higher than the 766k from August 2018 which is too high given it's only selling 28k a year, so again, the OCC must have different figures for pre-1994 sales. A 28k yearly average would put it on 794k to date. Hung Up (Platinum, 744,730, 37K) A post-1994 release, so we know this is a correct combined total. 'Hung Up' had sold 697k to August 2018 and 730k to April 2019. Vogue (Gold, 222,426, 37K) Sold an estimated 445k in 1990, putting its total at 667k to date. It sold 663k as of April 2019 so I think the OCC's 1990 estimate differs slightly, but not by too much. True Blue (105,014, 19K) Sold an estimated 522k in the 80s, putting its total at 627k to date. Seems like it could be right to me - a 19k yearly average would have put it on 608k last August, which again seems right. 4 Minutes (Plat, 638,169, 41K) Had sold 597k to August 2018 and 627k to April 2019. Frozen (608,281, 17K) Had sold 602k to April 2019. Beautiful Stranger (556,946, 6K) Seems sadly forgotten despite being a huge smash in 1999. La Isla Bonita (166,276, 30K) Sold an estimated 393k in the 80s, putting its total at 559k to date. Could well be right - we didn't get sales for it from the OCC last August but its position on their list would suggest it's correct. I imagine the yearly average will increase after this year as the OCC confirmed it was far and away her best performing song on video streams. Material Girl (220,473, 50K) Sold an estimated 279k in the 80s, putting its total at 499k to date. Seems like it could be right, for the same reason as 'La Isla Bonita'. Music (454,333, 12K) Would have been on about 442k as of last August going by the yearly average. American Pie (412,464, 9K) Averaging more than 'Beautiful Stranger'? Who's That Girl (40,009, 6K) Sold an estimated 373k in the 80s, putting its total at 413k to date. Seems about right. Don't Cry for Me Argentina (379,083, 9K) Borderline (96,826, 17K) Sold an estimated 281k in the 80s, putting its total at 378k to date. Again, seems about right. Ray of Light (340,142, 16K) Papa Don't Preach (Gold 135,989, 25K) Sold an estimated 593k in the 80s, putting its total at 729k to date. Seems right as it had at least sold over 697k as of August 2018. |

Thank you raindrops9977 and Liam!
Madonna finally coming for millionaire status *.* I hope the OCC will do an article when it happens, because it’s always been a notably surprising fact that none of her singles had managed a million units. Beautiful Stranger really does come across as one of her most forgotten big hits. Have to admit it’s never been a huge favourite of mine! |

Beautiful Stranger really does come across as one of her most forgotten big hits. Have to admit it’s never been a huge favourite of mine! For sure. I think it's down to the fact that it's sandwiched between two big eras and doesn't really belong to either of those albums, plus while Austin Powers: The Spy Who Shagged Me was a big hit, it really hasn't dated very well and certainly isn't seen as a classic. Then you have the fact that she did another soundtrack single the next year (American Pie) and it becomes even less of a standout. |
