Chart Analysis

This year's Christmas Number One goes to Hurts for the second year running with 'All I Want For Christmas Is New Year's Day'. Last year they surged 17-1 to claim the Christmas Number One, this year they got to #1 a week earlier and now spend a second consecutive week atop, and fourth week overall. It is also very likely that it could stay at number one next week, that's if it doesn't get overtaken by the mass of holiday songs now in the chart.

For Leona it is close but yet so far as 'One More Sleep' stalls at #2 again. The Pogues climb a place to re-peak at #3 with 'Fairytale Of New York'. It last went to #3 in 2013. Wham! are up one to #4 with 'Last Christmas' and Cascada's cover version joins it, leaping 59-5. Avicii is still the week's highest non-holiday song but falls down to #6. Up 24-7 and gaining a new peak is Andy Williams with 'Happy Holiday/The Holiday Season'. The Waitresses return to the top 10 also, up 42-8 with 'Christmas Wrapping'. Entering the top 10 and also the top 40 for the first time is George Michael's 'December Song (I Dreamed Of Christmas)', this week's highest climber jumping 80-9.

A few other holiday songs climb the chart, in the top 40 Chris Rea drives 61-16, Shakin' Stevens moves 30-17, Joni Mitchell flows 81-25 (a personal best for 'River'), Mariah Carey springs 83-26, Pretenders travel 62-27, John & Yoko climb 63-29 (also a personal best), Paul McCartney jumps 71-38 and Boney M. rise 60-39. Re-entering the chart altogether in the top 40 are Elton John, back in at #28 smashing his old peak of #56 with 'Step Into Christmas', and Ryuichi Sakamoto returns at #40 with 'Merry Christmas Mr. Lawrence'.

Songs to especially watch come the new year include 'Burns' by George FitzGerald, which despite heavy competition jumps 49-24 this week, and a smaller yet significant climb from Beatsole with 'Before I Wake', up 45-35.

Outside the top 40, numerous more re-entries but also a few new entries this week. At #45 are YouTubers Jack Douglass and The Living Tombstone with novelty dance holiday song 'Jingle My Bells', which only had a few days this week so could well be a contender for next week's chart. Likewise for the entry at #72 for Armin van Buuren and Josh Cumbee with 'Christmas Days', which surprisingly is not a dance track but is a seasonal reworking of AvB track 'Sunny Days'. Another new song enters at #73 for Sia with 'Santa's Coming For Us' and the final new entry in the chart is... not new at all, dating back to the 1940s. Nat King Cole's 'The Christmas Song' enters the chart for the first time at #95.
