Luis Fonsi & Daddy Yankee's 'Despacito' Tops Hot 100 for Ninth Week & Becomes Top Radio Song
By Gary Trust | July 10, 2017 2:13 PM EDT

Luis Fonsi and Daddy Yankee's "Despacito," featuring Justin Bieber, leads the Billboard Hot 100 chart (dated July 22) for a ninth week. It also rises to the top of the Radio Songs chart, becoming the first predominantly Spanish-language song ever to crown the airplay ranking.

Plus, French Montana's "Unforgettable," featuring Swae Lee (of Rae Sremmurd), hits the Hot 100's top 10, pushing 13-10.

"Despacito" (released on Universal Music Latino / Raymond Braun / SchoolBoy / Def Jam / UMLE / Republic Records) dominates the Digital Song Sales chart for a 10th week, with 129,000 downloads sold (down 6 percent) in the week ending July 6, according to Nielsen Music; the remix with Bieber accounts for 78 percent of the song's sales (essentially even week-over-week and in line with its 80 percent share the four weeks before that).

The track is just the 11th to spend at least 10 weeks at No. 1 on Digital Song Sales and the first since Ed Sheeran's "Shape of You," which tallied 10 beginning Jan. 28. On the Streaming Songs chart, "Despacito" leads for a ninth week, with 61.2 million U.S. streams (down 2 percent) in the week ending July 6.

On the all-format Radio Songs chart, "Despacito" rises 2-1 with 149 million in all-format airplay audience (up 5 percent) in the week ending July 9. The collab makes history as the first predominantly Spanish-language song (or any song not sung primarily in English) to reign, dating to the chart's 1990 inception. To compare, the Hot 100's last such No. 1 before "Despacito," Los Del Rio's "Macarena," reached No. 7 on Radio Songs in 1996. One other such song has ascended to the Radio Songs top 10s: Enrique Iglesias' fellow Spanish-language hit "Bailando," featuring Descemer Bueno and Gente de Zona (No. 8, 2014; helped by a remix with English lyrics).

"Despacito" is Fonsi and Daddy Yankee's first Radio Songs No. 1 each and Bieber's third, following his own "Sorry" and "Love Yourself," which led for two and 11 weeks, respectively, in 2016. "Despacito" additionally rises to No. 1 on the top 40-based Pop Songs airplay chart (2-1), where it's likewise the first predominantly non-English language leader; "Macarena" hit No. 5 on Pop Songs and "Bailando" reached No. 10 (while PSY's Korean-language "Gangnam Style" climbed to No. 10 in 2012). "Despacito" is Fonsi and Daddy Yankee's first Pop Songs No. 1 apiece and Bieber's fifth.

Notably, "Despacito" tops the Hot 100's three main component charts (Streaming Songs, Digital Song Sales and Radio Songs) simultaneously. It's the first song to dominate each chart at the same time since "Shape of You" (April 8 and 15)."Despacito" also rules the Hot Latin Songs chart for a 23rd week and the Songs of the Summer tally for a sixth week, having led the latter list each week since it made its annual return just after Memorial Day.

DJ Khaled's "I'm the One," featuring Bieber, Quavo, Chance the Rapper and Lil Wayne, keeps at No. 2 on the Hot 100; it debuted atop the May 20-dated chart. It leads Hot Rap Songs for a 10th week and Hot R&B/Hip-Hop Songs for a fifth frame. Meanwhile, Khaled spends a second week at No. 1 on the Billboard 200 with parent album Grateful, which holds on top with 70,000 equivalent album units.

Bruno Mars' "That's What I Like" rebounds 4-3 on the Hot 100; it topped the May 13-dated chart. It also returns to the top of the Hot R&B Songs chart for a record-tying 20th week, matching the commands of The Weeknd's "Starboy," featuring Daft Punk (2016-17), and Drake's "One Dance," featuring WizKid and Kyla (2016), for the longest since the chart's 2012 launch.

Back to Khaled: "Wild Thoughts," also from Grateful and featuring Rihanna and Bryson Tiller, dips from its No. 3 Hot 100 high to No. 4. It keeps at No. 2 on Streaming Songs (39.8 million, down 5 percent) and jumps 17-14 on Radio Songs (78 million, up 28 percent), boasting the Hot 100's top airplay gain for a second week.

Rounding out the Hot 100's top five, Sheeran's former 12-week No. 1 "Shape of You" remains at No. 5, while extending its record for the most weeks spent in the top five from a song's debut, having now logged its first 26 weeks, or an even six months, on the Hot 100 in the top five, dating to its entrance at No. 1 (Jan. 28).

Kendrick Lamar's "Humble.," which crowned the May 6-dated Hot 100, rises 7-6; Imagine Dragons' "Believer" slips from its No. 6 high to No. 7, while ruling Hot Rock Songs for an 18th week; and Sam Hunt's No. 6-peaking "Body Like a Back Road" travels back to the Hot 100's top 10 (12-8) after 11 weeks outside the region (spent between Nos. 11 and 16). "Road" also pads its record for the most weeks logged atop the Hot Country Songs chart by a soloist to 22 (and is now within two weeks of tying Florida Georgia Line's overall mark: 24 weeks at No. 1 for "Cruise" in 2012-13).

"Road" returns to the Hot 100's top 10 with across-the-board gains, lifting 6-5 on Digital Song Sales (50,000, up 1 percent); 11-10 on Radio Songs, where it reached No. 9 in May (84 million, up 7 percent); and 18-16 on Streaming Songs (17.8 million, up 6 percent). Aiding its momentum is its continued crossover from country to pop radio, as it bullets at No. 11 on Adult Pop Songs and No. 20 on Pop Songs, while remaining in the top five of Country Airplay, which it led for three weeks in May.

Post Malone's "Congratulations," featuring Quavo, backtracks to No. 9 from its No. 8 Hot 100 peak, while French Montana's "Unforgettable," featuring Swae Lee, leaps 13-10. The track marks French Montana's second Hot 100 top 10 and first as a lead artist, following his featured turn on Chris Brown's No. 9-peaking "Loyal" in 2014. Swae Lee hits the top 10 in his first solo appearance, following one visit to the tier with Rae Sremmurd: its seven-week 2016-17 No. 1 "Black Beatles," featuring Gucci Mane.

"Unforgettable" keeps at No. 9 on Streaming Songs (25.9 million, up 4 percent) and No. 19 on Radio Songs (57 million, up 12 percent) and lifts 25-24 on Digital Song Sales (22,000, down 5 percent). As for its title, "Unforgettable" is the first song by that name to reach the Hot 100's top 10, following two other memorable versions of a different, classic composition (written by Irving Gordon) that each peaked in the top 20: by Dinah Washington (No. 17, 1959) and Natalie Cole (No. 14, 1991; the song famously incorporates her father Nat King Cole's vocals, after he had released his iconic version in 1951).

Wait … nothing by The Chainsmokers in the Hot 100's top 10? Their No. 3 hit "Something Just Like This," with Coldplay, departs the bracket (10-13), ending a streak of 61 consecutive weeks in the top 10 for the duo, eight weeks shy of Katy Perry's record 69-week top 10 run in 2010-11.

Also in the Hot 100's top 15, two songs hit new highs: Shawn Mendes' "There's Nothing Holdin' Me Back" (18-14) and Charlie Puth's "Attention" (23-15). The singles surge thanks in part to 69-cent iTunes Store sale prices, bounding 14-3 (56,000, up 64 percent) and 21-2 (69,000, up 149 percent, marking the Hot 100's greatest sales gain) on Digital Song Sales.

Nice to see Sam Hunt back in the top 10, fallen back in love with that song again recently, proper summer tune. Its no.1 on the country singles for the 22nd week now, not far off taking the record from Cruise.

Really would love it if he managed to break through over in the UK, I reckon he could if he had the right exposure.

Great to see a lot of British acts in the top 40 also. Can see Calvin going top 10 with Feels.
