Q1. Artist who had their first #1 single in 2020
Correct answers given 15 (from a possible 22) | Pointless 4 | Incorrect answers 0 2 points Captain Tom Moore | Simon., dj_tim_e, paulgilb Cardi B | StoneDragon, RabbitFurCoat, TS0301 DaBaby | Bjork, Riser, Bré Jawsh 685 | xajnipi, King Rollo, Sid_ 1 point 24kGoldn | oof, Mack. Burna Boy | jimwatts, JulianT Don Toliver | Maestro, Dan17F1 Gunna | chrissmith276, PeteFromLeeds Michael Ball | vibe, Suedehead MNEK | awardinary, Scene The Weeknd | MiichaelKing21, Dobbo Pointless Billie Eilish | Jade iann dior | Mango Live Lounge Allstars | rio309 Roddy Ricch | danG Unused correct answers Internet Money, Joel Corry, Juice WRLD, Megan Thee Stallion, NAV, NHS Voices of Care Choir, SAINt JHN Last year quite a few established chart stars got their first #1 single. Regardless, in classic Buzzjack Pointless style, promising newcomer Captain Tom Moore is one of the top scorers here, while Billie Eilish was among the Pointless answers. I actually thought we’d be inundated with picks for the featured artists on Lemonade, but only four came in split, between two of them. I allowed Live Lounge Allstars as a whole, although I would have disqualified any of the participant artists (Dave Grohl, yungblud, etc.) in their own right, and also would have disqualified combination answers like "Joel Corry feat. MNEK" but even Joel got left out here despite (or perhaps because of) one of the biggest #1s of the year. In the end, this turned out to be the only question with no incorrect answers! |

Oh yes Billie I thought that might straddle the line of an obvious answer but also one people could forget as it feels like it should've happened longer ago

Q2. Artist / group who have had 8 or more #1 albums
Correct answers given 15 (from a possible 21) | Pointless 8 | Incorrect answers 1 4 points Eminem [10 albums] | MiichaelKing21, JulianT, TS0301, Riser, danG 2 points Beatles [15] | rio309, Jade, Bré Bob Dylan [9] | awardinary, vibe, Maestro Bruce Springsteen [12] | xajnipi, Suedehead, Dobbo Led Zeppelin [8] | jimwatts, paulgilb, Mango 1 point R.E.M [8] | chrissmith276, Dan17F1 U2 [10] | Mack., Scene Pointless Coldplay [8] | Sid_ Elvis Presley [13] | Bjork Kylie Minogue [8] | oof Madonna [12] | Simon. Queen [10] | dj_tim_e Robbie Williams [13] | PeteFromLeeds Rod Stewart [10] | King Rollo Rolling Stones [11] | StoneDragon 29 points Stereophonics [7] | RabbitFurCoat Unused correct answers Abba [9], David Bowie [11], Michael Jackson [10], Oasis [8], Take That [8], Westlife [8] Another answer with a defined list of correct answers, although I didn’t look for one before starting this quiz. Eminem reached the tally of eight #1 albums with 2017’s Revival and has since had two more, so a prominent choice for top scorer. Eight of you came up Pointless here including with the most recent addition to the club, Kylie. We also have our first incorrect answer as, unfortunately for RFC, Stereophonics only have seven #1 albums and missed out with 2017’s Scream Above The Sounds by a tiny margin for what would have given them an eighth! |

The opportunity to answer my favourite band came up and I took it. That could've gone a lot worse

The disadvantages of not checking answers! I thought 8 would be nailed as I remember their last one made it which was at least their 10th + a massive selling GH

Q3. Artist / group who have had singles peaking at #2 in at least 3 different decades
Correct answers given 13 | Pointless 6 | Incorrect answers 1 4 points Cliff Richard [50s, 60s, 80s, 00s] | MiichaelKing21, Simon., chrissmith276, Dobbo, danG Take That [90s, 00s, 10s] | awardinary, dj_tim_e, JulianT, Dan17F1, Riser 3 points Robbie Williams [90s, 00s, 10s] | RabbitFurCoat, PeteFromLeeds, Jade, Bré 2 points Elvis Presley [50s, 60s, 70s, 00s*] | Suedehead, Bjork, TS0301 1 point Madonna [80s, 90s, 00s] | paulgilb, Sid_ Stevie Wonder [60s, 70s, 80s] | Mango, King Rollo Tom Jones [60s, 70s, 80s] | jimwatts, StoneDragon Pointless Beatles [60s, 70s, 90s] | rio309 Diana Ross [80s, 90s, 00s] | xajnipi Kylie Minogue [80s, 90s, 00s] | oof Michael Jackson [80s, 90s, 00s, 10s] | Maestro Queen [70s, 80s, 90s] | Scene Rod Stewart [70s, 80s, 90s] | vibe 29 points Jay-Z [90s, 00s] | Mack. A trickier one to define, I nearly didn’t put this question in or reduced it to two decades, but stuck with it, and your answers included a few acts I hadn’t realised had done this. I think Cliff is in double figures for #2 peaks across the decades, whereas Take That have only the same three songs which qualify them here – they were the top scorers, closely followed by one of the latter’s sometime members as a solo artist. Elvis qualifies unambiguously thanks to 1969 Suspicious Minds reaching #2 in 1970, regardless of several of the re-releases of his former #1s reappearing there in 2005, although I would have counted those. By a looser interpretation, would have also counted Mariah Carey thanks to AIWFCIY peaking at #2 within the decades either side of 2005’s We Belong Together, but nobody went there. Unfortunately for Mack, Jay-Z missed out on a third decade with his Empire State Of Mind coming a few months too early for the 2010s! |

Robbie not as good an answer as I hoped for (with 'Shame' literally scraping a 2010s option) but at least Take That would've been slightly worse

Q4. Self-titled Top 40 single (same title as the artist / group)
Correct answers given 20 | Pointless 15 | Incorrect answers 1 5 points Doop [Doop, #1, 1994] | xajnipi, Scene, Dobbo, Dan17F1, Riser, danG 1 point Deepest Blue [Deepest Blue, #7, 2003] Simon., JulianT Living In A Box [Living In A Box, #5, 1987] StoneDragon, Bjork Teletubbies Say Eh-Oh [Teletubbies, #1, 1997] | MiichaelKing21, rio309 THE SCOTTS [THE SCOTTS, #11, 2020] | PeteFromLeeds, Sid_ Pointless Absolutely Fabulous [Absolutely Fabulous, #7, 1994] | awardinary Bartier Cardi [Cardi B, #40, 2018] | TS0301 Deep Forest [Deep Forest, #20, 1994] | Mango Gouryella [Gouryella, #15, 1999] | dj_tim_e (Hey You) The Rocksteady Crew [The Rocksteady Crew, #6, 1983] | Jade In A Big Country [Big Country, #17, 1983] | Bré Motorhead (Live) [Motorhead, #6, 1981] | vibe Mr. Blobby [Mr. Blobby, #1, 1993] | chrissmith276 Notorious B.I.G. [Notorious B.I.G., #16, 2000] | Mack. Oh Well [Oh Well, #28, 1989] | paulgilb Storm [Storm, #32, 1998] | RabbitFurCoat Talk Talk [Talk Talk, #23, 1982] | Suedehead Theme From S-Express [S-Express, #1, 1988] | oof Visage [Visage, #21, 1981] | King Rollo Warrior [Warrior, #19, 2000] | jimwatts 29 points The 1975 | Maestro This one takes us a bit further outside the box – I’ve no idea how many correct answers there could be, maybe hundreds. That notwithstanding, this question brought the highest scoring answer in the quiz courtesy of a 1994 one-hit wonder. I was rather generous in allowing titles which weren’t exactly the same but had the artist name in common, so we ended up with half the answers being pointless, ranging from the 1993 Christmas #1 to Cardi B via a slew of turn-of-the-millennium dance hits. I’m afraid Maestro takes maximum points as, unless I’m mistaken, none of The 1975’s self-titled songs made the chart or were Top 40 hits by any other name. |

I considered Oh Well but thought that might be more well known than Visage. I made the right decision.

Talk Talk by Talk Talk made the final of BJSC a couple of years ago so some of the younger ones might know it now. Can confirm this is how I know of it (I nearly put that as well but decided to go for something a little less obvious to take advantage of 'it can just contain the artist name'). |
