So after the SHAMBLES of tossing aside a potential winner in Satin Circus last year, only to crash and burn in the semis (Lex may gloat ONCE and then move on), Finland will be looking to get back into the grand final in Stockholm. The competing artists for 2016's UMK are being announced tonight 5pm UK time. |

Oh don't worry, I got my gloating out of the way by the time the final was over.
Finland usually has at least a few good'uns so moderately hyped for this. |

The entries are now being revealed on December 1st apparently, although Krista has been confirmed as one of the UMK 2016 co-hosts so that'll be fun!

Oh it probably is, I just saw 1/12 stated on ESCForum and assumed it was our date format rather than the other way around!

A lot of very strong songs from my brief listen through.
Mikael Saari has more of the same from 2013. Not as good as 'We Should Be Through' by any means but I can still see that challenging for this. Cristal Snow would make a good continuation for Finland always sending same sex kiss songs in Sweden. Rafaela, Sandhja and Tuuli are the best of the rest. |

We Should Be Through really should have gone to Eurovision in its year. But this new one sounds just as good so I'll be very happy if Finland sends him.
Taking a listen to the others that look promising, Good Enough sounds... good enough, bit basic duet but could work. Liian Kuuma is the sort of ridiculous shit I could find really endearing but everyone else would probably hate. Obviously though, as it's Finland (and they seem too short on these sorts of options this year sadly) I think it's all about Barbe-Q-Barbies. They sound very cool and rocky and... totally tailored to me. |

Just checked out Mikael's song out of interest and wow! I've heard lots of good songs from the national selections this year - and if countries pick right we will be in for an insanely strong year - but I think 'On It Goes' is the first song I've heard that I've thought could actually win Eurovision. It is similar to 'We Should Be Through' (which I've actually only listened to all the way through for the first ever time right now) but it has that little more power for me while retaining the intense emotion, and the production is so beautiful. It feels very Norwegian in that it has that same feel and sound to their recent entries particularly with Carl and Morland/Debrah.
I hope Finland don't go for the closest thing they can find to a rock song as they have a certain Eurovision top 10 in their hands here, and possibly a lot more than that! |

I hope Finland don't go for the closest thing they can find to a rock song as they have a certain Eurovision top 10 in their hands here, and possibly a lot more than that! That closest thing they could find to a rock song is also the ONLY (notable) rock song in a NF from the biggest rock-loving nation on the continent, and it's also an incredibly brilliant Halestorm-like bit of femrock grunge. I think they could do it. With this and Avantasia, NF season is finally really starting for me. I want this. I mean, them or Mikael, but the Barbies would be preferable. Which is reminding me of 2013 even more when I wanted Arion or Mikael, so Finland, please don't find a Krista somewhere among the rest. You got 30-odd other nations to do that with. |

I wouldn't dare go so far as to call it a potential winner out of context but I can certainly see 'On it Goes' doing similarly to 'Kuula' (if not slightly better what with being in English). Even if there's a lot of ballads, as is always the risk in Eurovision these days, it's still got something unique about it to stand out.

So tonight there was this preview show on YLE where some people (idk if there's a jury involved in some form in the shows or not, or even if these people will be that jury) as well as the public voted on the music videos. Won't give you all of them but these were the top 5 of the Jury and Public
JURY 01 Cristal Snow - Love Is Blind (46/50) 02 Sandhja - Sing it Away (46/50) 03 Barbe Q Barbies - Let Me Out (42/50) 04 Mikael Saari - On It Goes (38/50) 05 Rafaela Truda - Rise Up (38/50) PUBLIC 01 Cristal Snow - Love Is Blind 02 Pietarin Spektaakkeli - Liian kuuma 03 Mikael Saari - On It Goes 04 Annica & Kimmo - Good Enough 05 Pää-Äijät - Shamppanjataivas Obviously in a live setting the rankings may change but Cristal Snow topping the public vote is pretty interesting. The song made a really good impact on me on first listen so if the live version is good then I can see it doing very well. |

I hadn't listened to that song yet, but on first listen I can see why, especially given that's voting on the music videos (in which case, well done Finland). The song on its own is... okay, against Mikael (as the only other song in both top 5s) it may not stand out as much unless they bring what's on the video down to the UMK staging. In which case it looks like an interesting battle shaping up.

Haven't really been following this yet (boo me!) but out of the songs I've listened to Sandhja is my favourite. Mikael Saari is strong too.

Good Enough sounds so much better from that brief studio version listen. If we were still doing the duet overload from last year I'd want that in there actually.
Other two so far haven't been that great or standout... enjoyable but flops. |
