We are here to kick back and celebrate Janet Jackson's iconic discography which spans over 4 decades with countless hits with more than a 100 Million records sold worldwide, making her one of the biggest selling artists of all-time. There's 62 songs in this rate & from her first 2 albums from her early career I have only included the ones that charted, but if there's anything major left please let me know. Rules

Very much here for this. She's one of those acts that I love with absolute classics but also has songs that I think are pretty terrible so I'm expecting to be able to use the full spectrum of scores here

This is a very timely rate for me as I realised the other day that I don't have a Janet playlist and was thinking of making one...
 04.0 Young Love - this is very generic American soul sound for the early 80s. Like most other acts songs from the era, it's too long and it hasn't dated particularly well 05.0 Come Give Your Love to Me - there's a decent song in here somewhere but sadly it's hampered again by poor production. I could imagine a beefed up version of this sounding completely at home on Rhythm Nation though. 06.5 Say You Do - I don't think I've ever realised before just how much this sounds like it should be on Michael Jackson's Off the Wall album  It's not as good as his singles from that album but I'm definitely enjoying this much more than I was expecting to02.0 Don't Stand Another Chance - worst one so far, it's like a pastiche of lots of other successful songs. Definitely yet to find her own style, it just sounds like a sub-standard MJ track. -1.0 Two to the Power of Love (ft Cliff Richard) - LOL this is absolutely diabolical!!!  Rare you get a duet between two acts who veer off in such totally different directions afterwards!00.0 Fast Girls - got bored during this one. The tracks from this album really have been bad. How she could go from this to what comes next is beyond me... 08.0 What Have You Done For Me Lately - the step up to this album is astonishing really. The attitude is there, she has a personality and something just clicks that hasn't really done so before this era. 07.0 Nasty - I prefer the production on this to the lyrics if I'm honest, she has better from the era 09.5 When I Think of You - this is glorious, one of her best examples of a 3 minute pop song. Love the original and also the Morales remixes in the 90s. 07.5 Control - not enjoying this one quite as much as I thought I did. Still good but not hitting the highs of some of her others so it can settle in the 7s 08.5 Let's Wait Awhile - the first example of the sound that would become a typical Janet ballad, very sensual in sound and a definite late night vibe 08.0 The Pleasure Principle - love the big guitar riff section in this and the subsequent breakdown, very 80s 04.0 Funny How Times Flies (When You're Having Fun) - a single too far for me. Not fond of it on the album either as Let's Wait Awhile would close things off perfectly. 09.0 Miss You Much - I always feel like this is What Have You Done For Me Lately part II as you can pretty much sing it over this too. I do think this is ultimately a slightly better version though as Janet had really settled into her sound by this point. 11.0 Rhythm Nation - Love this! So epic, my favourite of her 80s material. Interestingly, given my comments on some of her earlier material sounding like MJ tracks, this sounds like a prototype for where MJ went in 1990/1991. 10.0 Escapade - wonderfully carefree, just utterly joyous 08.5 Alright - this gets better as it builds, it starts off not really going anywhere but by the 1 minute point onwards I get hooked 05.0 Come Back to Me - this is okay but I'd never choose to listen to it outside of the album, typical of the ballads that populate the end of Janet albums 10.0 Black Cat - I never used to like this but I have no idea why now, it stands out as something a little different in her discography 09.5 Love Will Never Do (Without You) - This is great but it loses half a mark as I always wish the chorus was longer 08.5 State of the World - lyrically this is a bit clumsy, although no doubt well intentioned. Kind of like MJ's Heal the World but Janet of course turns the subject into a funky jam 07.5 The Best Things In Life Are Free (ft Luther Vandross) - listening to this and the original is really not the version I can remember. A quick flick through the various mixes and I think it's the CJ Mackintosh one that I used to hear and that's my preferred mix through familiarity, although maybe that was the 1995 version now that I'm looking at Polyhex. I'll average this one at 7.5 as I'm not quite as fond of the original. 10.0 That's The Way Love Goes - I bought it at the time expecting more of the same so was initially disappointed by the production but now I really love it, the layering throughout the song is sublime 11.0 If - My favourite of hers  An absolute STORMER of a single. I could never be brave enough to mess with this Miss Janet.08.0 Again - I've never been quite as keen on ballad Janet but this is sweet and successful 07.5 Because of Love - I feel like the tempo is too high, I'm sure I'd like it more if it was slowed a little bit. 10.0 Any Time, Any Place - Love the beat and bass on this, the whole production is so effective. I don't think I quite paid attention to the subject matter when I was a kid(!) but I loved the melody and the album version especially how they really drag the production out at the end of the track and let it all just gradually fall away. 06.5 Throb - the horn line in this is undeniably catchy but it's too long. Always used to skip this as a kid but have more appreciation for it now, it's actually pretty clever production wise in terms of how many hooks are layered but it needs stronger lyrical content. 07.0 You Want This (ft MC Lyte) - this has grown on me over the years. Still not a huge favourite but it's decent enough. 07.0 Whoops Now - this is basically a budget Escapade. It's still kinda joyous but the album version just goes on about a minute too long... 03.0 What'll I'll Do - this is such an oddity on the album, a random retro guitar track that just doesn't really suit her? 08.0 Scream (ft Michael Jackson) - I remember everyone thought this was awful when it was released. In retrospect it was actually a really bold sound to come back with. 07.0 Runaway - haven't heard this in years! At the time I was kinda disappointed by this as it felt a little lightweight compared to the stuff from the Janet album 03.0 Twenty Foreplay - this is basically Any Time, Any Place Pt II and is completely unnecessary within her discography. It even has the same rain and thunder samples etc so presumably was being considered for the Janet album before being resuscitated for her best of. 11.0 Got 'til It's Gone (ft Q-Tip & Joni Mitchell) - this has such a groove! I'm never a huge fan of obvious samples, especially as a huge Joni Mitchell fan, but this just works. Absolutely love the outro too how they bring it out and in again for the final 30 seconds or so 10.0 Together Again - obvious 10, deservedly her biggest hit and should have finally given her a #1 05.5 I Get Lonely (ft Blackstreet) - a come down after the first two amazing singles, kinda generic 90s R&B really. Not awful as such but definitely not a career highlight, or even an album highlight for me. I can see why it did okay commercially though. 06.5 Go Deep - marginally better but still just mining a very generic sound from the era. I remember being mystified why they chose these two over the likes of the title track, Empty, Special or indeed... 09.5 You - I don't recall this being released at all and would have been my final choice for single over Go Deep. Not sure this would have actually connected that well but I loved it. 04.0 Every Time - Again Part II. Nice enough I guess but doesn't have that sweet sentiment that Again has. 02.0 Luv Me Luv Me (ft Shaggy) - I'd forgotten all about this. That was a perfectly acceptable state to have been in. 04.5 What's It Gonna Be (ft Busta Rhymes) - I think I bought this at the time. It's not really held up well has it. 03.0 Girlfriend/Boyfriend (ft Blackstreet) - don't recall ever hearing this before. Not doing anything for me 06.5 Doesn't Really Matter - Another one of her songs that has elements of the Any Time, Any Place hooks in it. At least this one does the trick differently by upping the tempo a lot. Not fond of the key change part at the end, kinda tacky. 09.0 All For You - chasing the Stardust/Modjo sound but does it well, very catchy but one of the few of hers that I prefer in edited form. 09.5 Someone To Call My Lover - this has aged really well, probably my favourite from this album now and has that breezy effortless feel that she can pull off so well 01.0 Son of a Gun (ft Carly Simon & Missy Elliot) - struck gold sampling on Got 'Til It's Gone but this was a total misfire. Ruins the classic You're so Vain. 03.0 Feel It Boy (ft Beenie Man) - this just isn't really my thing but it's definitely not a patch on her solo stuff. 05.0 Just A Little While - I'd completely forgotten what this was like before listening now... the guitars are a welcome change to some of her other material but they're also quite dated by their mid 00s sound. It's okay but I won't be rushing back to it. 06.0 I Want You - This is pretty smooth sounding, very retro production. This is nice enough but is a little bit forgettable when compared to the real highs of her discography. 07.0 All Nite (Don't Stop) - my favourite of the singles here, again it doesn't quite rate up there with her best and overall this era probably isn't for me but this is catchy enough. 02.0 Call On Me (ft Nelly) - very bland, I can't remember this at all from the time and I'm struggling to remember anything about it now it's just finished playing. Really not a huge fan of the 20YO or Damita Jo albums. 05.0 So Excited (ft Khia) - better than the Nelly collab, or at least more interesting production wise. Again I don't think I'll be rushing back to hear this but I wouldn't turn it off either. 06.5 Feedback - The 'break it up, give it to me come on' bits always stick in my head. Mid tier overall but a step back in the right direction after the last batch. 04.5 Rock With U - Starts in a promising way but doesn't really go anywhere once you've heard the first minute or so... yeah I'm bored of this one way before the end. 05.5 Make Me - A return of sorts to the filtered disco sound of the All For You. It's a listenable but very generic dance track and lacks her personality 04.5 Nothing - Very much a Jackson ballad by numbers. I was hoping that these later ones would throw up some gems that I'd want to include but tbh they're largely confirming to me that she'd sadly lost something by this point. 01.0 No Sleeep - there's an obvious joke in here somewhere about this track being the cure for that problem 04.5 Unbreakable - A bit better again but by this point it's all very reminiscent of Madonna's Hard Candy album where she just sounded like a guest on her own album to the sounds of on trend producers from a couple of years ago. 05.5 BURNITUP (ft Missy Elliot) - As above comment, but with added Missy Elliott and a bit more life to it. 02.5 Dammn Baby - Another dreary one, firmly into faceless territory by now. 07.5 Made For Now (ft Daddy Yankee) - ...but we end on a comparative high! I'm not going to pretend that this is something that I'd regularly choose to play but it's totally one of those songs that I'd drunkenly really enjoy if it came on in a bar on holiday |
