ABBA's greatest hits collection Gold is the longest-running Top 100 album ever
08 August 2019 | By Justin Myers

The 1992 career retrospective has spent its 900th week on the Official Albums Chart.

You could be forgiven for thinking that ABBA had no more records left to break, but the Swedish pop legends never stop!

Gold, the band's greatest hits collection originally released in 1992, has passed its 900th week on the Official Albums Chart, making it the longest-running Top 100 album of all time.

Gold features all nine of ABBA's UK Number 1 hit singles – Waterloo, Mamma Mia, Fernando, Dancing Queen, Knowing Me Knowing You, Take a Chance on Me, The Winner Takes it All, and Super Trouper – and went straight in at Number 1 on the Official Albums Chart when released in 1992.

Its enduring appeal means it's had a further seven non-consecutive weeks at the top, most recently a two-week stint in 2008 around the release of the first Mamma Mia! movie. Sixty-one of those 900 weeks were spent in the Top 10, with its most recent stint coming only last year, when the second Mamma Mia! hit cinemas. Gold hasn't left the Top 100 once in the last two years. See ABBA Gold's entire chart run – and all their other albums' – in their Official Chart archive

ABBA's Gold album is one of the biggest selling albums of all time too, on 5.45 million sales, second only to Queen's Greatest Hits, which itself has notched up 867 weeks in the Top 100!

Other major albums with more than a few weeks in the Top 100 under their belt include Legend from Bob Marley & the Wailers on 888 weeks and the longest-running studio album Rumours, from Fleetwood Mac, on 795, and Pink Floyd's Dark Side of the Moon, on 534. See the official list of the bestselling albums of all time in the UK

More modern albums not quite up to ABBA's 900-week (and counting) record but still with an impressive run include Oasis's (What's The Story) Morning Glory (395 weeks), Ed Sheeran's + (374 weeks) and Amy Winehouse's Back to Black (343).

Other huge hits collections with long chart runs under their belts include Michael Jackson's Number Ones from 2003 (406 weeks), Eminem's 2005 set Curtain Call (368 weeks), the Very Best of Fleetwood Mac (again!) from 2002 (360 weeks), and Madonna's 1990 retrospective The Immaculate Collection (341 weeks).

I made a note of this in the most recent Top 100s thread too, surprised the OCC have waited until now to do an article on it (and that they've done one at all).

Legend should follow it in 12 weeks time as that's also showing no signs of leaving the chart ever.

In addition to the 900 "official" weeks (official as they are listed on the OCC website) that 'Gold' has been on the UK Albums chart there are a further two weeks the album has spent inside the top 100: on 22 May 1993 the album was at number 77 and on 5 February 1994 the album was again at number 77. From the beginning of 1989 (when the Compilation Albums chart began) to 5 February 1994 the OCC only have a top 75 in their albums chart archive which is why those two weeks are missed.

ABBA Gold should also pass 1m sales for the decade - according to Gezza's thread on album sales for 2010-2018, Gold was on 907k so needs just 93k this year, which it should manage. Legend was on 909k so could do the same, though I'm a little less sure it will get 91k by year end.

Not sure how many albums have sold over 1m in multiple decades. I assume Gold did over 1m in the 2000s as well as the 1990s, so could soon make it 3 decades in a row?

In The OCC 'Feature' about 'ABBA Gold' reaching 900 UK Top 100 Weeks...

They have given it 5,450,000 Total UK Sales.

https://www.officialcharts.com/chart-news/a...um-ever__27036/

However, in a 22nd April 'Feature' they gave it 5,580,000 Sales. (Including W/E 25th April Chart).

https://www.officialcharts.com/chart-news/a...-ranked__26063/

So, they have now removed around 130,000 of its Sales.

Nor have they added in any of its Sales in the 15 Charts from W/E 2nd May to W/E 8th August.

It sells around 2,000 UK copies - often a bit more - every Week.

It will sell around 2,000 copies this Week - W/E 15th August Chart.

On W/E 6th September 2008 Alan Jones gave it 4,312,090 UK Sales.

Does anyone know how many UK copies it sold from W/E 13th September 2008 to the final Week of 2008?

Was the last 2008 Chart that of W/E 3rd January 2009?

It sold 410,119 UK copies in all of 2008. It was the 19th Best Seller of the Year...

'ABBA Gold' was not in the Year End Top 100 of 2014. The OCC only published a Top 100 for that Year.

However, in 2016, The OCC told me that it was 103rd for 2014, with 70,300 Sales.

Here is some UK Sales Data for 'ABBA Gold'.

A)... Alan Jones' Total from W/E 3rd October 1992 to W/E 6th September 2008 = 4,312,090

We then just need its Sales from W/E 13th September 2008 to the final Chart of 2008 - W/E 3rd January 2009 (?)

It sold 410,119 copies in all of 2008 and was the UK's 19th Best Seller for that Year.

B)...

2009 -- 54th for the Year = 248,500 Sales

2010 -- 90th for the Year = 150,900 Sales

2011 -- 130th for the Year = 95,400 Sales

2012 -- 140th for the Year = 81,300 Sales

2013 -- 119th for the Year = 77,250 Sales

2014 -- 103rd for the Year = 70,300 Sales

2015 -- 79th for the Year = 84,000 Sales

2016 -- 72nd for the Year = 88,500 Sales

2017 -- 77th for the Year = 91,000 Sales

2018 -- 20th for the Year = 173,500 Sales

C)...

2019 -- To W/E 8th August = 28th for the Year -- 74,750 Sales

D)...

Plus about 2,200 Sales, to rise from No.40 to No.35, in the latest UK Album Chart -- W/E 15th August 2019.

not many people are buying, it’s mostly streams that are holding these albums up so high in the chart.

Bristolmans & DanG -- The continuing UK Chart success of 'ABBA Gold' is not just down to Streaming. It is in
the Sales Chart too, and the Downloads and Physical Charts. 'Greatest Hits', (One), by Queen does well in the
other UK Charts too, as does Fleetwood Mac's 'Rumours' and Bob Marley & The Wailers 'Legend'.

As a huge ABBA Fan, I'm looking forward to announcing their next 'All Time' UK Chart Record - soon.

It depends how long it takes 'ABBA Gold' to get there...The Weeks needed are not too many at all.

ABBA's success carries on because Melodies never die. Some Acts have hardly any Melodies and ABBA are full of them...

Which is why 'ABBA Gold' is also in the Irish, Swiss, and Austrian Charts every Week, and why it re-enters other Countries
Charts, now and then too - such as Germany's...

Who the hell is still buying these albums? I find it baffling

New buyers enter the record market every week. People are continuing to buy CD players or turntables for the first time and need to buy records - CD, vinyl, downloads. And the UK population continues to rise.
Same applies to other catalogue albums - Queen, Beatles, Bob Marley etc.
