This month marks 15 years since the release of Madonna's second official greatest hits collection, GHV2. It was considered the sequel to 1990's The Immaculate Collection and was rumoured to even be titled The Immaculate Collection 2, but they settled on an abbreviation of Greatest Hits Volume 2. It is said that the album includes only songs that Madonna could "listen to five times in a row" and, unlike its predecessor, did not feature a chronological tracking list nor any new songs. Would you have preferred an album more similar to The Immaculate Collection, showing a progressive journey of Madonna's 90s hits, concluding with a suggestion of what to expect from her music next? Which songs would you have been able to listen to on repeat?

The original tracking list:

01. Deeper and Deeper
02. Erotica
03. Human Nature
04. Secret
05. Don't Cry for Me Argentina
06. Bedtime Story
07. The Power of Goodbye
08. Beautiful Stranger
09. Frozen
10. Take a Bow
11. Ray of Light
12. Don't Tell Me
13. What It Feels Like for a Girl
14. Drowned World/Substitute for Love
15. Music

I mean that is a KILLER track-listing but i'll try and form my own personal top 15 from the eras that predated this release. The opening track though, what a way to open music.gif wub.gif

I imagine a chronological list that focused on the main hits of 91-01 (similar to how TIC did), the tracking list would look like this:

1. Erotica
2. Deeper & Deeper
3. Rain
4. I'll Remember
5. Secret
6. Take a Bow
7. You'll See
8. Don't Cry for Me Argentina
9. Frozen
10. Ray of Light
11. The Power of Goodbye
12. Beautiful Stranger
13. American Pie
14. Music
15. Don't Tell Me
16. New Song
17. New Song

However I'm not sure it works as well as TIC. With that collection, it was literally hit after hit, bop after bop (even ballads like 'Crazy for You' or 'Live to Tell' didn't feel that out of place), whereas the material that the 91-01 era had to offer was much more diverse and I don't think song-by-song it flows as well as one would hope, despite the album-by-album journey from Erotica to Music making perfect sense. I think a little more thought would have had to be taken with the tracking list and, whilst I think the official tracking-list did consider that, I'm not sure they got it quite right. Plus it criminally left off 'Rain' and 'You'll See' - Madonna, how could you not be able to listen to these more than 5 times?!

I don't think it works chronologically at all - especially as most people would be highly put off by it beginning with the Erotica era.

She shouldn't have included American Pie on the music album. But instead included it on this release with a new single.
