Spain are my tips.

Dark horses for me are Poland/Austria.

Absolutely devastated for Welbeck. A real blow to 2018 qualifying hopes as well.

I think you Mack France will win Euro 2016.

Posted by: Mack 11th May 2016, 06:15 PM

Real shame about Welbeck missing out on the Euros.

Germany for me, they could be the next Spain and win 3 big tournaments in a row.

The surprise package will be Switzerland who'll make the Semis!

France for me with Austria as dark horses!

Considering I currently have Ukraine ranked #3 in the world, this is feasible. Also Turkey has been quietly improving after a disastrous 2014 WC campaign. Their EURO qualifying didn't get off to a hot start either, but they were one of the better teams in Europe during the final 2/3 of qualifying.

Multiple simulations using footysimulator.co.uk

After running multiple simulations for a matchup, it chose the best scoreline/result by what came up most often. Believe it or not that 7-1 score came up alot. Poor Ireland in major tournaments...

Out there for the whole tournament. Tickets for Albania vs. Romania, Iceland vs. Austria (both last games of the group so should have something on them for one or both sides making them more interesting than they appear), a R16 match, the Lyon semi final and for all England games as far as they go! biggrin.gif

6 of us going (plus a couple of others for a week or so), driving and camping wherever possible. Been planning and saving for it since the beginning of 2013 now. Would've loved to go to a World Cup but Brazil too soon, Russia too big and not exactly an appealing place, and no desire at all to go to Qatar, so the next time it might be held somewhere we'd want to and could go to would be 2026, all of us nearing 40 probably have a lot more commitments making it not possible to sod off from England for a month or so.

Had tickets to all England home matches in the last two years (didn't go to them all, only so many times England at Wembley on a midweek night has any appeal) and also done four of the aways (Scotland, Ireland, San Marino and Spain) and managed to have enough 'caps' to get tickets to all the matches, not even had to go for any of the expensive options, €55 each for the group matches, slightly over £600 for all 7 matches should we get that far, refunded if not. I can't wait now, it's come around quick though!

Posted by: Rooney 15th May 2016, 12:55 AM

Sounds amazing Mark, I'm jealous. I know a guy that's in the England Supporters Group and he loves it, sounds like he has a right laugh. Certainly a once in a lifetime opportunity, and not too far to travel either. I was tempted to go to the Euros this year, but I'm going to wait until 2020 instead. Or chance my luck at least!

Seeing the squad France have taken to the Euros, I'm not convinced at all. I can see why they're big favourites, but I will be well avoiding them in the betting.

Marcus Rashford has been included in England's provisional 26 man squad for Euro 2016.

Posted by: Mack 16th May 2016, 02:19 PM

England's provisional 26-man squad:

Goalkeepers: Joe Hart (Manchester City), Fraser Forster (Southampton), Tom Heaton (Burnley).

Defenders: Gary Cahill (Chelsea), Chris Smalling (Manchester United), John Stones (Everton), Kyle Walker (Tottenham Hotspur), Ryan Bertrand (Southampton), Danny Rose (Tottenham Hotspur), Nathaniel Clyne (Liverpool).

Midfielders: Dele Alli (Tottenham Hotspur), Ross Barkley (Everton), Fabian Delph (Manchester City), Eric Dier (Tottenham Hotspur), Danny Drinkwater (Leicester City), Jordan Henderson (Liverpool), Adam Lallana (Liverpool), James Milner (Liverpool), Raheem Sterling (Manchester City), Andros Townsend (Newcastle United), Jack Wilshere (Arsenal).

Strikers: Wayne Rooney (Manchester United), Harry Kane (Tottenham Hotspur), Jamie Vardy (Leicester City), Daniel Sturridge (Liverpool), Marcus Rashford (Manchester United).

Surprised to see Delph and Wilshere picked up over Noble and Cresswell who have had fantastic seasons for West Ham.

Posted by: Dobbo 16th May 2016, 02:26 PM

Brilliant to see Rashford included. Of course this is solely down to Welbeck's untimely injury but still, what an amazing couple of months for him.

I imagine he'll either get trimmed out when the 23 are announced or being taken but ultimately not play like Walcott in 2006.

Booked a half day at work months ago in preparation smile.gif

Posted by: Rooney 16th May 2016, 06:20 PM

I've booked the full day off for the Wales game, well a flex day biggrin.gif

I find the England squad utterly unbalanced. There's not many players available that we could have picked, but our defense is very vulnerable. You would expect Dier/Bertrand would play as 4th choice CB, but even if that is the case, that leaves us really short for a holding midfield player. I think Townsend/Rashford/Delph will e the unlucky 3 to miss out.

Posted by: Hazza Chapman 17th May 2016, 03:50 PM

What is your favourite Euro tournament?

I haven't seen many but for me it's probably Euro 2008. There were a lot of goals in this tournament and quite a lot of entertaining matches, the progress of Turkey added extra entertainment as well because there were a lot of Turkish people who lived in or near my area then and EVERY time Turkey won a match there would be car horns beeping as if they won the tournament itself laugh.gif

Posted by: Mack 17th May 2016, 04:12 PM

Out of the five since I was born.

It would be 2004 because of the unexpected triumph for Greece. The powerhouses of Germany, Spain and Italy going out in the group stages. the controversial disallowed Sol Campbell goal between England and Portugal wasn't good with Urs Meier having his telephone number and e-mail address published in certain English newspapers despite what happened, you can't say that he deserved to be treated like that.

Posted by: Hazza Chapman 17th May 2016, 08:46 PM

Spain have omitted Diego Costa, Fernando Torres & Juan Mata from the Euro 2016 squad. Surprised about Mata's absence but not so much Costa's or Torres.

Posted by: DJHazey 18th May 2016, 02:41 PM

I'm surprised Torres is still on the squad to be honest. His cameo appearances in the 2014 WC seemed to be like 'final goodbye' moments with the national squad.

England's starting XI for a 'pointless' friendly against Turkey:

Gave away way too many chances. A better team will punish us. The positive I guess, is that that won't be our starting XI.

Posted by: Mart!n 22nd May 2016, 06:33 PM

Vardy played well though I suspect he be in the starting eleven, Sterling and Wilshire didn't look that good on paper, our first England goal was off side though but was given, lucky for us, poor defending cost us a goal, they weren't really focused at times. They really need to up their game in the next two friendlies, the Portugal game could see some holes appearing, clearly we wasn't the best side.

Posted by: mdh🏠 22nd May 2016, 08:03 PM

yep as Rooney said - at least we will have some rotation when the Euros actually come around - Rooney & co. will be important regardless of what people say

Posted by: Mack 22nd May 2016, 10:34 PM

Allowed Turkey too many chances. Still suspect in defence and on the counter attack could so easily have been an draw. Wilshere and Sterling were quite poor. Vardy should start in the Euros.

I expect Portugal to give England a lesson there next Thursday if we continue like this in defence.

Posted by: Hazza Chapman 22nd May 2016, 10:58 PM

Why is Wilshere in the squad anyway? he only played 3 times this season. He was probably at home smoking while the likes of Michael Carrick have been working their butts off for the past 9 months yet there's no place in the squad for him.

Posted by: Soy Adrián 23rd May 2016, 11:48 AM

When he's fit, Wilshere is a class above any of our other CMs. Hodgson made the right call in including him in the 26 to assess his fitness, and if he's satisfied with that then he fully deserves his place. Carrick should have made the World Cup squad two years ago (and for pretty much every tournament since 2006) ahead of Gerrard or Lampard but he's a bit past it now.

Posted by: DJHazey 24th May 2016, 12:50 PM

You're underrated Turkey y'all. As my simulated tournament showed, they shouldn't be overlooked. This team has been one of the strongest in the world in the past year. I used to have them ranked in the 50s, but they've climbed all the way up to 22 in short time. Granted, they still lost to many backup English players and I didn't see the match so I couldn't tell you if all the regulars for Turkey were playing, but regardless...I'd be shocked if they don't make a quarterfinal run.

Posted by: Mack 27th May 2016, 06:50 PM

England Starting XI

Forster, Clyne, Bertand, Smalling, Stones, Henderson, Wilshere, Drinkwater, Lallana, Sterling, Rashford

And within 2 minutes, Rashford is an international scorer. The youngest player ever to score for England on his debut.

Posted by: Rooney 27th May 2016, 07:58 PM

Wilshere's been garbage in both these games.

I still expect him to be on the plane.

Posted by: RobinJuanPersie 27th May 2016, 09:05 PM

Great to see Tom Heaton make his England debut. He went to the same high school I went to, he was actually the guest that came and gave out our GCSE certificates.

Posted by: mdh🏠 28th May 2016, 07:10 AM

Another especially average performance last night. I genuinely expect us to play a lot better at the Euros though, I feel as though we didn't really give 100% last night.

Not too impressed with Rashford as others are, he was great in places however its apparent his first touch is not up to scratch and he needs to calm down a bit, as he tends to take one too many touches when it really matters.

I'm glad to get the win though, I'm REALLY looking forward to playing Portugal - a real test of our ability and I hope we'll play something similar to how we'll line up at the Euros (Kane x Rooney to start please)

I thought similarly. Rashford has massive talent, that much is clear. He had a good game, but made a few bad decisions/bad touches. Not that that was not to be expected, but he was Jesus reborn according to a lot of people. I expect he will probably go to the Euros.

Thought the best player last night was Bertrand. Him and Clyne are so much more solid at right back. Rose/Walker offer quite a bit in attack, but I think they both overexpose the centre backs too much.

Posted by: Mack 28th May 2016, 09:45 PM

Remind me why Wilshere is still in the starting 11?

Another average performance from England in their match last night. The opposition team will always find a way to exploit our weak defence and on the counterattack.

Posted by: Dobbo 29th May 2016, 10:13 AM

Rashford should definitely go, he may not be the best all round player but he's someone that can do something from NOTHING which is a very rare breed for English players these days.

For that same reason I think both Sterling & Sturridge need to go too. It doesn't matter how terrible a game they have if they score a 1-0 winner that's all that counts.

Posted by: Mack 29th May 2016, 10:36 AM

Take Rashford to the Euros, see what happens.

Posted by: Rooney 30th May 2016, 11:58 AM

So who is getting cut from the England squad?

Delph is already gone, it's expected Townsend will be another. Guess a lot depends on the Sturridge injury, but even if he's semi fit I think he will go. I wouldn't be surprised if he didn't take Barkley.

Posted by: Rooney 31st May 2016, 06:30 PM

So Drinkwater & Townsend are the unlucky two to miss out. Naturally, there's uproar about the former.

Posted by: Mack 31st May 2016, 06:45 PM

Was expecting Townsend to drop out. But Drinkwater shame to see him miss out. But there was no-way Roy would remove Wilshere from the squad was there?

Posted by: Hazza Chapman 31st May 2016, 11:34 PM

Roy Hodgeson is an idiot, why leave out one of the best midfielders of the season and keep Wilshere who barely even played at all?

Posted by: Soy Adrián 1st June 2016, 07:42 AM

Wishere is a class above Drinkwater if he's fit, which the medical staff must think he is. Right call.

I'd have taken Townsend over Barkley.

Posted by: Mdh 1st June 2016, 01:43 PM

It was inevitable that Wilshere would get in the team. Also inevitable that he'll be straight in the starting line up for the first game of the group stage.

Slightly miffed that Drinkwater didn't make it in however it is what it is, we should just be thankful that this is undoubtedly the best squad we've had in recent years and we have considerably more high quality (or above average) players available to us. Oh, and we've had no injuries of much importance (apart from Shaw however we knew he wouldn't make it match fit again in time)

Looking forward to the Portugal game - will be a real test of our ability to bring it against half decent sides. Something tells me we'll lose.

Love international football and this period in the build up to a feast of football over the next month - much prefer it to club football!!

Posted by: Soy Adrián 1st June 2016, 02:58 PM

It is probably our best squad since 2006, not that that's saying a great deal.

Posted by: Rooney 1st June 2016, 04:59 PM

It's a good squad, probably our best since 2006, but it's so unbalanced. We are going to really struggle against teams that dominate the midfield as our midfield is poor at controlling and dictating games. And the less that's said about our defence the better! I worry if we play a diamond 4-4-2 as we will need to play Walker/Rose for width, but teams will just waltz through our midfield.

And for Drinkwater, I thought he was okay against Netherlands, but so out of depth in the other two games, especially against Australia.

I'm the complete opposite. Don't get me wrong, I do enjoy the Euros/World Cups, but I just don't get that emotionally attached to England like I do with Bristol City. When City lose I'm pissed off for the whole week, when England lose I'm annoyed for a few hours and then I just forget about it. Obviously if England do lose a Euro/World Cup final, I will be more upset and annoyed for a longer period of time.

Which channel is that on? I can't see it on the listings.

Speaking of the BBC & Euro 96 there is a documentary from Alan Shearer based on that tournament at 10:45 tonight on BBC One. Next Wednesday there is a documentary from Thierry Henry about the history of the Euro's and about France in particular on BBC One as well.

Edit: The Thierry Henry documentary is actually next Tuesday on BBC One

I'm sure there will be at least one penalty shootout at the Euros this year.

A decent 1-0 win - we wern't great once again however I think it was a huge improvement on the Turkey & Australia games. Maybe not so much in terms of attack but our defence has improved two fold today, we looked more composed and relaxed.

Posted by: Rooney 2nd June 2016, 08:46 PM

I only watched the 2nd half - seems like I didn't miss much. From watching the first 20 mins it just makes me think what I always thought, the diamond 4-4-2 is poor. We have no width or pace and the players centrally all want the same space. Having Vardy, Kane, Ali and Rooney as 4 of your front 6 is just madness. I don't think the shape suits the players at all. 2 up front is all good on paper, but has looked truly terrible when I've seen it over the past 2 games.

18 year old sensation that United and half the big European clubs are after. William Carvalho is a good player too!

Posted by: RabbitFurCoat 3rd June 2016, 06:48 PM

With Rooney an absolute cert to start it's Vardy that needs to be dropped, he's just not effective when not playing like Leicester, he'd be ok to start against a team where we'll have little possession but that's not likely to happen until we reach the quarter finals, or coming off the bench but he's so ineffective otherwise.

I enjoyed last night because hopefully it showed Roy that trying to cram so many form forward players into the team will get us nowhere. Wilshere must start, and stick Sterling in as a proper winger, with Alli playing much narrower on the other side and interchanging with Rooney like he does so well with Eriksen at Spurs.

Never thought I'd say this but we're only missing one player who could be described as even vaguely important through injury and I actually think it'd be difficult to lose anyone of greater importance than Danny Welbeck, he's made Roy's England teams tick since he's played him with a really good goalscoring record internationally, we're always better with him on the left.

This isn't just a Hodgson problem, it's an England problem. We won our group easily and now we're worrying about which formation best suits Rooney. It's honestly ridiculous. It's horrible to see the media try and shoe horn players in to the team as well as accommodate the system to fit in the superstars. Rooney plays up front or not at all. If you're playing with two strikers then no matter how many goals Vardy has scored this season, Sturridge is a better striker.

Posted by: Soy Adrián 5th June 2016, 12:21 PM

We probably looked more coherent when we switched to 4-3-3 with Sterling, Sturridge and Lallana all playing in their proper positions.

The main problem seemed to be that Vardy and Kane followed the Portugal full backs all the way back, which made it less of a diamond and more of a 4-3-3 with everyone playing out of position. In a diamond it should be the two wider CMs closing down the full backs as soon as they move past the defensive line and into the midfield, leaving the strikers free in the channels if we win the ball back. We played it really well in Switzerland 18 months ago with Delph in particular showing how it should be done.

The 'Leicester' by virtue of only narrowly being able to be here would be Albania, got straight through the qualifying group instead going to the playoff sections (where they would have likely lost) because of their match against Serbia being awarded to them. Not that they're going to do anything here.

Believe me, that was pretty much the only period of extra time played under the golden goal system that was any good. The rest were incredibly boring with both sides concentrating on not conceding a goal. That's why it was scrapped.

I can't see Payet at West Ham at all next season, a huge bid from Barca/PSG I can envisage...

Posted by: Mdh 10th June 2016, 09:24 PM

I really hope Payet stays at West Ham. However if PSG cone calling I expect him to pounce on the opportunity.

Posted by: Chez Wombat 10th June 2016, 09:38 PM

Solid opening game despite a poor first half. France were a bit iffy following that first goal and I was a bit worried for them, but that Payet goal was beautiful and was more what we expected to see. Very solid from Romania too, especially for an opening game against the home nation (hell they were REALLY close to having the first goal of the tournament!).

Posted by: Dobbo 10th June 2016, 09:44 PM

They were! Was thinking it would be Brazil 2014 all over again where Croatia got the first goal (admittedly from a Brazilian player).

Posted by: Dobbo 10th June 2016, 11:08 PM

Well I personally hope he stays! Some of his stuff lit up the league last season but the international tournaments seem to massively inflate a player if they have a good one - I'm thinking James Rodriguez after the World Cup!

Posted by: Rooney 11th June 2016, 12:14 PM

It's going to be an open tournament, while I think Germany/France/Spain are the standout teams, they're all easily beatable. It's not like 4-6 years ago where it was extremely difficult to beat Germany or Spain in an competitive game. All teams have their weak points, France's is definitely their defence.

Posted by: Hazza Chapman 11th June 2016, 12:43 PM

Albania vs Switzerland doesn't look like an exciting game on paper but hopefully it will be one.

Posted by: Mdh 11th June 2016, 12:56 PM

But the least exciting matches usually tend to be the polar opposite....

Unless you're talking about Nigeria vs Iran in the 2014 World Cup - that looked crap and ended up being the worst football match I ever watched.

1-0 Half time.

Cana off.

Posted by: DJHazey 11th June 2016, 01:57 PM

It's shame, that red card. Cana slipped and if he didn't do something, it was going to be 2-0. Unfortunately, anything he did (hand ball, drag down Sefarovic) was going to get him another yellow in a goal-scoring prevention situation. Albania was really taking it to the Swiss. They aren't out of this yet. It's an uphill climb, but they could still equalize with a counter-attack.

Posted by: Mart!n 11th June 2016, 02:05 PM

The first half was a bit messy but enjoying seeing a new country playing in the tournament, if Switzerland score another goal, and don't concede one, they should be leading the group.

Posted by: Iz~ 11th June 2016, 02:20 PM

Albania had a good few minutes around the 30-minute mark, but nothing's got through. I am hoping they'll outperform a bit because underdog rules but I'm not expecting them to.

I'm hoping they'll bang in two goals as otherwise I'm probably going to be the only one not getting points for the match :/

Posted by: Mart!n 11th June 2016, 02:58 PM

I counted too many yellow cards in that match, I lost count in the end, it felt like a whole team was yellow carded, the match itself was okay, it brought a new team into the fold, but they did nothing for me.

I think it was 8 cards given out - gives me World Cup 2010 final vibes! Albania reminded me a bit of how Turkey were against us a few weeks ago - physical and showing a lot of promise but not really delivering.

Posted by: Hazza Chapman 11th June 2016, 03:25 PM

Switzerland probably deserved the victory, they had more of the ball and created more chances than Albania but the goalkeeper for Albania made quite a lot of good saves and looks like a decent keeper.

Wales vs Slovakia!

The first game with one of the Home Nations in it - really looking forward to seeing how well Wales do on the big stage! Part 2 of 3 of a brilliant day of football.

Posted by: Dobbo 11th June 2016, 04:17 PM

Brilliant start for Wales biggrin.gif (I'm supporting them also as my place of birth however when they play England I will back the Lions).

Posted by: ML Hammer95 11th June 2016, 05:08 PM

More violence in Marseille this afternoon between French police and English fans... Police tactics sound heavy handed I must say, but English fans far from blameless. Our drinking culture baffles those in continental Europe.

Posted by: Mdh 11th June 2016, 05:15 PM

Typical England fans.

Wales suddenly looking in trouble a bit, stay like this please biggrin.gif

Posted by: Rooney 11th June 2016, 05:28 PM

England fans situation is a weird one. I know of people out there and they're saying it's not like the media are portraying it at all. Claiming they're being provoked by other groups first. It's a minority of fans though, and most of these people won't even be going to the England games! Cheap flights and close proximity seems to bring out the trouble makers who just look for any excuse to kick off. Regardless of whose fault it is, it's certainly not good for us.

Posted by: Dobbo 11th June 2016, 05:53 PM

Yes Wales biggrin.gif (now need England to perform)

Posted by: Mart!n 11th June 2016, 05:55 PM

Wow... great performance from Wales best match of the tournament so far, England can't concede a goal against Russia though later. Could have been 4-1, Ramsey missed an opportunity and I think they should have had a penalty, Skrtel deserved to be yellow carded for that attack out of nowhere.

And perfect result from me 2-1 spot on biggrin.gif

Posted by: Mdh 11th June 2016, 06:08 PM

Wales were slightly above average. Going to need to be more consistent against England and Russia though.

Didn't see Switzerland v Albania, expected Albania to struggle but fair play to them though although they had chances.

Great performance from Wales an exciting team.

Turkey vs Croatia the first match for Sunday and I think this will be the best match so far. During Euro 2008 the many Turkish people in my area were going APE every single time they won a match whether it was in the group stage or the knockout stage, every win was celebrated with beeping car horns and chants of "TURKEY, TURKIYE!"

So it will be interesting for me personally to see what happens if Turkey win this match today because there is still quite a large proportion of Turks living in or around my area.

Posted by: T Boy 12th June 2016, 08:34 AM

Big smile on my face seeing Wales win. Literally had no hope at all but even if they lose everything else, seeing then at the top of the table for a few days is worth it. Bad luck to England but a point is a point.

Ukraine really coming in to this game now.. the Germans have lost their control of the midfield.

Really enjoying the Germany vs. Ukraine match, Ukraine had a few opportunities towards the end of the first half.

Posted by: Mart!n 12th June 2016, 09:00 PM

Great goal at the end of the match, I did find the second half a bit dull though, as if Ukraine just wanted to give up, probably ran of steam in the end. Germany look like the winners, I think they can go all the way.

Love to see a Belgium vs Germany final.

Posted by: Hazza Chapman 12th June 2016, 09:26 PM

I was joking with the person that I was watching the game with that Bastian Schweinsteiger was coming on to stretch his legs for the last few minutes laugh.gif, as a United fan I was happy to see him get on the score sheet.

Germany deserved to win the match and were in control of the game for the majority of the game although their first goal shouldn't have counted as that wasn't a free kick. Germany will be there or there abouts as they always are, I can see them getting to semi final at least but I still reckon France will win the tournament.

Posted by: Robot 13th June 2016, 02:50 PM

Spain are SO DULL to watch, seemingly trying to pass it into the net against a defence of about 8 people. It was painful at times, I just wanted them to actually shoot rather than trying to walk it in.

Posted by: Iz~ 13th June 2016, 02:54 PM

Ah ha. Typical Spain, didn't even bother watching because a scoreline and playstyle like that was bound to happen. Boring team.

Posted by: Mart!n 13th June 2016, 03:02 PM

What a dull game from Spain, if England couldn't find the net, Spain couldn't until the last 3 minutes. They were horrendous, I really can't see the holders winning it.

Anyhow 10 points for me, that will do nicely.

I'm actually looking forward to the Belgium vs. Italy game tonight.

Spain are so boring I forgot to predict it.

Watched it in Science this afternoon (our teacher chose that do doing osmosis and diffusion which I'd say is an inspired decision), OH MY GOD one of the worst games since Nigeria vs Iran. yawn.

1-0 to Ireland. (I can't watch any of these because I'm at work, but I have livescore.com up at my desk.)

Posted by: DJHazey 13th June 2016, 05:31 PM

Right after Ireland took the lead, Sweden cranked up the pressure big-time and has finally broken through. Zara Larsson scored and it's 1-1.

Posted by: Mart!n 13th June 2016, 06:04 PM

Never expected that result, especially when Ireland scored, on the plus side, my prediction was 2-0 to Sweden, so no points there on the predictor

Posted by: Mart!n 13th June 2016, 08:54 PM

Great match, its a shame Belgium couldn't find the net, they had so many chances especially right at the flipping end. Never expected Italy to win that game, I was very impressed with Italy, overall a great match. Belgium at the bottom eek, they should beat Rep. Ireland no problem, hopefully they can beat Spain as well. Spain's performance was dire tonight.

Posted by: Dobbo 13th June 2016, 08:55 PM

Belgium are very overrated, team of individuals for sure.

Posted by: Mdh 13th June 2016, 09:16 PM

Belgium just got destroyed by Italy. They played the game as if they were better than Les Azzuri (is that it?) however got smashed laugh.gif It was so poor from them, a fully deserved Italy win.

Posted by: Hazza Chapman 13th June 2016, 10:09 PM

There hasn't been many goals scored yet in these opening games but I'm sure it will pick up soon!

Watching highlights of these matches sucks, it feels as if there was only one match that took place today (Belgium vs Italy). At least when you watch Match Of The Day for Premier League highlights it still feels almost like watching it live but watching the highlights now on ITV just feels like it's rushed and devoid of drama. At least when they get to the knockout stage the matches will take place at more convenient times for most people.

Saturday 25th June & Sunday 26th June in particular look like days of heavy football biggrin.gif

Posted by: Mack 13th June 2016, 10:14 PM

Spain and Belgium definitely don't look or played like champions today. You can never write off Italy although we'll see what happens there. ITV highlights look rushed we've nearly twice the amount of time on analysis than the actual highlights.

Farcical that the next World Cup is going to be held in Russia.

Posted by: Mack 14th June 2016, 06:32 PM

Back to the football-

Well done Hungary beating Austria who just didn't cope with the occasion and the pressure.

Posted by: Mart!n 14th June 2016, 06:34 PM

Didn't see the Austria game, but I just caught the final score from it, Hungary winning 2-0, didn't really expected them to win, I got nothing for that game predicta wise.

Portugal looks comfortable tonight, they should sail through, unless Iceland gives them a good game, I predict 2-0 to Portugal.

And on that Russia disqualification, doesn't bode well as a host nation for the World Cup laugh.gif sleep.gif

Portugal aren't that great. If they didn't have Ronaldo, no-one would be fancying them to do well at all. They have too many off-days imo, but suppose with Ronaldo, there's always a chance.

So annoying, I've Portugal in my prediction league for money 2-1, and I backed Iceland to win (9-1 is way too tempting against an average side!). BUT delighted for Iceland regardless. Big point for them. The Portugal-Austria game is massive now, if either side loses that, they could be out.

Posted by: Hazza Chapman 14th June 2016, 09:54 PM

Iceland deserved the draw I think and even could have won the match with some of the good chances that they had. Portugal are and always have been quite overrated, their only really good teams were the Euro 2000 & 2004 teams. They couldn't even make it out of the group stage at the last World Cup and they wont go far in this either.

Cristiano Ronaldo spitting his dummy out by saying Iceland have an small mentality over them celebrating their draw with Portugal. You're the one with the small mentality in this tournament so far, Cristiano.

Same, I was kind of as relieved as France were in that 89th minute and then again six minutes later *.*

Do feel bad for Albania, they really did prove themselves defensively and were so close to getting their first ever point. Yeesh, the frustration at all those missed chances for France though.

I missed the game, but also thrilled for Iceland drawing with Portugal <3 Made their upcoming match with Hungary seem a lot more interesting ohmy.gif

Posted by: Hazza Chapman 15th June 2016, 09:37 PM

That was a sad end to the match for Albania, I was hoping that they would win but France struck in the 89th minute again before making it 2-0. France have now qualified for the round of 16 as a result of their win tonight, Albania would be eliminated now if only the top 2 teams in each group could go through but they have the 3rd place league as a last chance to make it through.

They played so well tonight Albania - play some good technical football. France just started poring forward in the end and there was more and more gaps.

For me it also shows a gulf in the quality of the top sides. Spain/England/Germany/Italy/Portugal/France (okay maybe the exception if Benzema was playing) are nowhere near as good as they have been in the previous 10 years. Can probably even count Brazil/Argentina in that as well. International football is more open at the moment as we're lacking truly top teams. Any team can be set up to play defensive football well. I've not seen one team so far that has been utterly outclassed.

Posted by: Steve201 16th June 2016, 12:56 PM

Possibly but i would argue Hungary and Albania didnt really set up defensively they set up as a team atacking and defending together.

Posted by: DJHazey 16th June 2016, 01:54 PM

Teams like Iceland and Albania are a lot more organized than people give them credit for. Their strategy against anyone, not just the tops teams, is to play back and counter-attack. Obviously they don't have the same level of talent, but they make up for it with organization and togetherness.

I think there are just more top teams than there used to be and a large group of them are equal near the top. Argentina is the top team in the world right now, in my eyes and all the major rankings agree with me (FIFA/ELO).

Ukraine all but confirmed as out (can't see them getting anything vs. Poland)

Fantastic result for Northern Ireland on an successful day for British football.

Posted by: Rooney 16th June 2016, 06:53 PM

Fancy Poland here.

Posted by: Mart!n 16th June 2016, 07:04 PM

I think Germany will bag this, after a slow start.

Posted by: Mdh 16th June 2016, 08:57 PM

Germany were horribly average and the worst I've seen them play for a good few years.

Posted by: Dobbo 16th June 2016, 09:06 PM

They were but I still think they'll win the tourno. Every team has its stumble at some point, even if France do go on and win they're been far from convincing so far in either game.

Posted by: Hazza Chapman 16th June 2016, 09:22 PM

What a dreadful game of football that was between Germany and Poland. I think the pundits hit the nail on the head by mentioning this new system of the 3rd placed teams qualifying for the next round, a team can lose two matches in the group stage (Albania) and still have a chance of making it through and having 3 or 4 points practically guarantees you getting into the round of 16 so teams are not playing to win as much as they usually would which is why not many goals have been scored so far and most of the matches have been quite dull.

I can't wait for the knockout stage to begin as a match like this where no one tried hard to win would end up in extra time or a penalty shootout and we should get more entertaining matches as a whole when teams realise that the final is getting closer and closer.

Posted by: Mart!n 16th June 2016, 09:42 PM

I actually turned off after the first half of that game, when I saw the final result, I figured out the second half was nothing much of an improvement, Germany usually score at least a goal in their matches they just took it all in their stride. I still think they will go through to the final.

Posted by: Rooney 16th June 2016, 09:46 PM

Germany have looked decisively average both the times I've seen them. Not enough of a goal threat and their full-backs are poor. Like I said previously, we're lacking real quality in the top teams. This Germany side is nowhere near the standard of 2012-2014.

I hope you didn't bet on Ukraine getting to the final because they are now officially eliminated from Euro 2016 laugh.gif

I didn't watch/haven't seen yet the match but I think Italy have been the best team so far in Euro 2016. They're reminding me a bit of how they were in the 2006 World Cup, no one expected them to do anything in that World Cup but they got better as the tournament progressed and eventually won it.

Posted by: Soy Adrián 17th June 2016, 04:48 PM

They were good against Belgium but it was hardly the defensive masterclass everyone was going on about, they conceded a few decent chances albeit to some good players. Today's game was bloody awful. They'll come into their own in the latter stages when they can more easily sit back and soak up pressure but I don't think there's many goals in the team against a good defence.

Posted by: Dobbo 17th June 2016, 04:56 PM

Italy & Spain are very similar, very safe football looking to just edge their opponents out.

Croatia look the most exciting team on current showing so far!

They'll definitely be punishments given by UEFA on Croatia over the flares and fighting.

Posted by: Mdh 17th June 2016, 08:57 PM

Spain looking slightly above average

Posted by: Hazza Chapman 17th June 2016, 11:55 PM

Spain played really well tonight but I have to say that Turkey made them look really good as well, Turkey were terrible and I can see them losing to Czech Republic in the final group game. They were the luckiest team in qualifying by being the "best third placed team" and would certainly not have qualified if the format of the tournament stayed at having 16 teams instead of 24.

Spain are not only in the round of 16 but they are now the bookmaker's favourites to win Euro 2016 after beating Turkey. I hope Spain don't win it otherwise it will become like Sevilla's domination of the Europa League winning it three times in a row.

Looking at the route for the knockout stage England have a golden opportunity to reach the semi finals if they win Group B, they should beat the 3rd place team in A/C/D and then they could potentially play Belgium/Portugal/Hungary in the Quarter final. Then they will almost certainly face Spain in the semi final which would be the end of the road for England.

So unless something freaky happens we'll be seeing Spain in the Euro final again nocheer.gif

The music on ITV is annoying but the animations are better than what BBC used so I guess it balances out. I liked the music that ITV used for the 2014 World Cup but the visuals were slightly better for the BBC intro.

The reason why the final matches in each group are played at the same time is because UEFA/FIFA don't want match-fixing to take place. It's mainly because of this match that took place in the 1982 World Cup: https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Disgrace_of_Gij%C3%B3n

Yeh if they took place at 5 & 8 it would be terrible.

Its the same with the final fixtures in the qualifying matches when Irelandd played Armenia in October 2011 the game started at 6pm because Russia played in thr group and it was all to play for so I had to go to Dublin for a game 2 hours earlier than normal. Posted by: Dobbo 22nd June 2016, 05:47 PM

I have a sneaky feeling Ireland will win this match. They have to win & it would be fantastic to see all 4 home nations in the last 16. Furthermore Italy have already won the group whatever happens!

Posted by: Mart!n 22nd June 2016, 05:50 PM

Kudos to anyone that predicted that final scoreline,

Posted by: Mart!n 22nd June 2016, 05:52 PM

Quite surprised there, England play Iceland.

Posted by: Dobbo 22nd June 2016, 05:54 PM

I'm not entirely sure if that's preferable actually laugh.gif it'll be another 10 men behind the ball display which we are shockingly poor at dealing with, but on the flipside they don't have a Ronaldo who on a good day would tear our defence apart. Iceland have no pressure on them whatsoever too.

Posted by: Mdh 22nd June 2016, 05:55 PM

That's a really good point although the fact they have no pressure on them means they're probably going to go for it - that's what they're playing like so far so I can't see them doing a Slovakia.

Posted by: RobinJuanPersie 22nd June 2016, 06:00 PM

I was watching the Portugal match on the TV and Iceland on my phone. That was so exciting, most enjoyable matches of football for absolutely ages.

Posted by: Hazza Chapman 22nd June 2016, 06:00 PM

It's looking like Croatia could make it to the final judging by the split in the knockout route to the final.

Posted by: Chez Wombat 22nd June 2016, 06:20 PM

Group F really have been providing the big moments this tournament, insane to think Hungary & Iceland are the top 2, very well done to both and Hungary/Portugal was a hell of a match to watch.

Gah, I'm torn with England vs Iceland, obviously preferable from our perspective to Portugal, but I've been rooting for little old Iceland throughout :'(

Posted by: Mack 22nd June 2016, 06:48 PM

Ha Portugal and Ronaldo.

That's what a small country can do, Ronaldo!

Well done to Iceland.

The best match of the tournament between Hungary and Portugal though.

Posted by: Hazza Chapman 22nd June 2016, 06:53 PM

England vs Iceland is just a play-off for who will be knocked out by France in the quarters at the end of the day, nothing to get excited about for England.

Posted by: Mart!n 22nd June 2016, 06:55 PM

Hungary could have an easy ride to the semis, been in the other end of the draw, I like to see them go further to the final, they have been my favourite country of this tournament, that match has to be the best game of the tournament, it was nail biting to watch.

Posted by: Mack 22nd June 2016, 06:58 PM

Hungary have to be considered a lively outsider now for further success in the Euros.

The Hungary v Portugal match nearly had the same amount of goals than there were in Group C.

Posted by: Rooney 22nd June 2016, 07:00 PM

England vs Iceland will be one frustrating game unless we score within the first 20 minutes!

Posted by: Iz~ 22nd June 2016, 07:12 PM

Aww at us playing Iceland, I wanted them to shock further but that'd have to be at our expense. Another match like England vs Slovakia where I equally want both sides to do well.

Gonna hope Croatia whacks Portugal, the former have been playing very well and don't deserve to go out to the one team that's recently been a 'big team' a lot on that side of the draw.

Posted by: Suedehead2 22nd June 2016, 08:27 PM

England have only played Iceland once before, a friendly in 2004. England won 6-1. Somehow I think Monday's game might be a little closer.

A brilliant win for the Republic of Ireland. A repeat of their '94 World Cup win against Italy.

Posted by: Iz~ 22nd June 2016, 09:04 PM

I can't believe how unbalanced the draw looks on paper. We will have a seriously underdog team in the final while Germany, Spain and Italy will need to battle to get to the semi-finals. It's all so exciting when it's like this.

Posted by: Mart!n 22nd June 2016, 09:05 PM

I feel confident England will beat Iceland, we should at least get into the final 8, I think we could be playing France in the last eight if they get through, if Rep. Ireland don't pull another surprise. Its nice seeing the underdogs playing well in this tournament, Hungary are really first class to watch.

Posted by: Mart!n 22nd June 2016, 09:08 PM

Posted by: Hazza Chapman 22nd June 2016, 09:48 PM

Thank God that the group stage is over now, the tournament will really come alive now!

Croatia vs Portugal
Wales Vs Northern Ireland
Spain vs Italy

These above matches in particular will be really fun to watch in the Round of 16, I can see the Croatia vs Portugal being full of goals, Wales vs Northern Ireland will have the flow and tempo of a Premier League match and Spain vs Italy is on paper the tie of the round.

We're most likely gonna get a Germany/Italy/Spain vs France semi final and a Croatia/Portugal vs Belgium/Wales/Northern Ireland semi on the other side of the draw. And of course we will get the obligatory penalty shootout along the way.

If we beat Iceland we will play France or Republic Of Ireland. Then a semi against Germany/Slovakia/Spain/Italy.

Posted by: Rooney 23rd June 2016, 05:52 PM

It's crazy how much blame Hodgson needs to take. We had one of the best opportunities in generations to get a really favorable draw and have a brilliant chance of making the semi-finals. He needs to go. He doesn't know his best team, or the best system to use. It's a major crime and I blame the pressure from fans/media as one of the criteria.

We're going to be lucky to get past the QFs.

Belgium/Croatia/Poland have a great chance of reaching the final now.

Glad England avoided a game against Norther Ireland. For what it is worth, I am expecting a 0-0 affair, with Wales winning on penalties.

Wales vs Northern Ireland is looking like it will go to a penalty shootout.

That goal from Shaqiri was amazing! It's a shame for him that his team ended up losing on penalties.

Croatia vs Portugal should be a decent match full of goals I think. Hopefully it will be like that anyway.

Kudos to Stephen Williams for staying on with that injury, but should have been taken off since they were leading in case he had another knock. A great win for Wales though, not their best game, hopefully they get Hungary in the next round.

A damp squib so far between Croatia and Portugal.

Shaquiri's goal is up there for goal of the tournament.

Could be the first game since Holland v Argentina 2014 World Cup Semi-Final that I fall asleep to unless something happens.

It's as if they are playing for a penalty shoot-out.

Posted by: Mack 25th June 2016, 09:42 PM

Well they didn't in the end and Portugal go through with the only shot on target. Feel sorry for Croatia though had two chances at the end.

Posted by: Mart!n 25th June 2016, 09:50 PM

So unlucky for Croatia after hitting the woodwork, and Portugal scored on the rebound. Croatia were really going for it at the end. I must admit the first 90 mins was pretty dull though. Not sure if Poland can beat Portugal but should give them a good game.

Posted by: Rooney 25th June 2016, 09:51 PM

Flukey goal for Portugal. Get this horrible feeling they're going to worm themselves to the final now!

Posted by: Chez Wombat 25th June 2016, 10:00 PM

That was a really dull game for two teams that should've provided much better football than that. Portugal got very, very lucky there, feel really bad for Croatia, they certainly weren't at their best today, but I feel penalties would've been a more reflective way of deciding that. Was hoping they'd be the dark horses of the competition as well after beating Spain.

Posted by: Mack 25th June 2016, 10:07 PM

Very lucky Portugal. I expect Poland to hopefully progress when they both play.

Still not fully convinced by Belgium despite this 2nd half spanking, flat track bullies for me.

Posted by: Mart!n 26th June 2016, 08:58 PM

That probably was the best match of the last 16, Hungary did have a couple of chances though. Belgium has got potential to go all the way I think, could be a repeat of the 1980 final.

Italy vs. Spain tomorrow feels like its all over for Spain, I'm utterly convinced that match will go to penalties.

Belgium do have potential to go through to the final for sure. Belgium v Wales hopefully will be a good match.

Posted by: Hazza Chapman 26th June 2016, 09:59 PM

I was willing Republic Of Ireland on against France but it wasn't to be, they played well in the first half but the pressure from France was too much for them to handle. Antoine Griezmann's Hotline Bling celebration after he scored his 2nd goal made me laugh laugh.gif

It was an easy victory for Germany as was to be expected and I thought Hungary gave a good account of themselves but took too many long range shots. A victory for Belgium was never in doubt, looking forward to Wales vs Belgium & Germany vs Spain/Italy.

Posted by: Mart!n 27th June 2016, 05:51 PM

Spain are OUT, and they had so many chances in the second half, terrific second half though, but I'm still not convinced Italy can win the tournament. I hope Chelsea know what they are in for with that manager, he is a right nutter. laugh.gif

Posted by: Mart!n 1st July 2016, 08:53 PM

Well... that was unexpected, really thought Belgium would have trounced them, but they dominated that match and so thrilling to watch. I really think this could be the year for the underdogs, I'm now leaning towards a Wales vs. Iceland final biggrin.gif shame Ramsay misses out playing in the semis, they needed the best team to beat Portugal.

Posted by: Dobbo 1st July 2016, 08:55 PM

I wouldn't be surprised at all with a Wales vs Iceland final given what 2016 has thrown us so far!

Posted by: BASTILLEmdh 1st July 2016, 08:59 PM

Belgium were great in places. Good to Wales though even though I don't rate them

Posted by: OutstandingMixer 1st July 2016, 09:07 PM

What an amazing achievement for Wales. They are a proper team, fantastic all over the pitch.

I hope they win the whole bloody thing now.

Posted by: Mack 1st July 2016, 10:06 PM

Wow! Wales played as a team and please some club sign Robson-Kanu please. He's had a good tournament. I would make Wales slight favourites in their match against Portugal. A man I saw burst into tears with happiness after waiting 58 years for Wales to play in an international tournament.

Once again Belgium seemed to flutter to believe with their performance.

Posted by: Hazza Chapman 1st July 2016, 10:54 PM

I'm happy for Wales, it was the best match I've seen so far and I think they will beat Portugal. Who would have thought that WALES would be one game away from the final of Euro 2016? it's like another Leicester City moment.

I think the 'Leicester City Effect' is in full bloom with the Welsh team, and I'm of the firm belief they can topple Portugal and make their way into the finals....GO WALES!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

Posted by: T Boy 2nd July 2016, 12:44 PM

I was at a staff party last night where we had to sneak out and watch the game. It was all surreal to me because I was pretty drunk already but the atmosphere was amazing and I still can't believe it. WALES in the semi final. Who thought? It'd be great to go all the way, shame we won't have Ramsey against Portugal though.

Posted by: Steve201 2nd July 2016, 03:57 PM

Ramsay is a massive lose for Wales by far the best player on the pitch last night - what's the craic with yellow cards I thought they got wiped after the last 16 game?

Ben Davies will be another lose - I expect them to be favs vs Portugal - they've been so boring so far and haven't actually won a game outright - go on Wales!!

Posted by: Mack 2nd July 2016, 06:36 PM

Can Germany end their tournament hoodoo with Italy tonight? As they've never beaten Italy in an major tournament.

Posted by: Mart!n 2nd July 2016, 06:57 PM

I'm going for a draw tonight in 90 minutes, I can see this game going to penalties.

Posted by: Mack 2nd July 2016, 07:07 PM

I think Italy will edge this in extra time. Could be a feisty affair here.

Posted by: Mart!n 2nd July 2016, 08:57 PM

Good second half so much better than the first half, its a shame Boateng shoved his arms around. And 40 points there... kerching.

Posted by: Silas 2nd July 2016, 09:44 PM

Having actual f***ing kittens right now.

Posted by: Silas 2nd July 2016, 09:51 PM

Oh thank f*** for that.

Both United players missing though drama.gif wtf was with Darmian's "beard", he needs to shave the shit out of that now.

Posted by: Mart!n 2nd July 2016, 09:57 PM

And Muller couldn't even score a penalty sleep.gif anyway at least the Italians are out thank god for that.

Posted by: Brett-Butler 2nd July 2016, 09:57 PM

Yay! My Buzzjack sweepstake team are still in with a shot! Still sad that it didn't get to the stage where the keepers had to take a penalty.

Posted by: BASTILLEmdh 2nd July 2016, 09:58 PM

Was rooting for Italy, typical f****** Germans

Posted by: Chez Wombat 2nd July 2016, 10:16 PM

I was dying at Zaza'a penalty, one of the worst I've ever seen, it was like a dance intro rotf.gif For two great teams, that penalty shootout was rather shocking, but it was probably the most tense match so far what with how closely matched they were. 'Grats to Germany though, even if I was hoping Italy would continue to defy the odds (and they were playing rather dirty at the latter half of that game).

Also in the sweepstake with my family, Italy were my last remaining team so I'm the first out (and my Buzzjack sweepstake went a long time ago) </3

Posted by: Hazza Chapman 2nd July 2016, 10:44 PM

Zaza's penalty made me fall to the floor with tears of laughter laugh.gif it was as if he was doing tap dancing or galloping towards the ball like a horse! Definitely the funniest penalty I've ever seen and I expect it to be on the trending section of YouTube by tomorrow. What made it even funnier was the fact that he was brought on as a substitute specifically to take a penalty in the shootout laugh.gif, when he was about to come on I was thinking to myself "Conte is bringing him on to miss a penalty in the shootout" and in the end that's what happened.

It was disappointing as a Man United fan to see two of our players miss penalties and especially to see Darmian miss the penalty that lost the match for Italy. I was developing a feeling that Italy might win Euro 2016 but after tonight I'm sticking with my pre tournament pick France.

Was so nervous for Germany watching this last night, so many times the shootout seemed like it would swing in the Italians' favour. So pleased they're through.

I did feel like that was possibly a match for the tournament though - if France don't come through. And two different finalists to last time is always good.

RIP Iceland sad.gif

Posted by: Dobbo 3rd July 2016, 07:47 PM

Oh my word, just shows how much of an embarrassment England were in this competition.

Poor brave Iceland sad.gif

Posted by: Mart!n 3rd July 2016, 07:47 PM

Iceland are getting mullered, another 4 in the second half please. Kudos to anyone that will have the correct score after full time. laugh.gif

Posted by: Rooney 3rd July 2016, 07:47 PM

Harsh on Iceland, but France are hitting form now...

Posted by: BASTILLEmdh 3rd July 2016, 07:50 PM

If Iceland were a person, the person would be dead.

I agree, just hope Portugal do not get into the final, with one of Wales key player (Ramsey) missing the semi due to a suspension sad.gif

Iceland can still be very proud of their achievement in this tournament. Despite the current scoreline against France. Just coming up against a team that is on form in this half. I really hope that this isn't a 7-0, 8-0 scoreline as that would be harsh on Iceland.

An population of 323,000 people and they get a team of 23 to play in the Euros and reach the quarter-finals of the competition has to be considered a massive achievement.
