I guess as far as rejections go, it is quite positive! Bet they were absolutely kicking themselves later nevertheless!

I searched YouTube for these songs and had a listen and you can definitely see where the label was coming from. None of the songs stood out as being anything more than an extra track on a 12" b-side.

But as far as rejection letters go, this showed that she had talent, she had potential and that with the right material she could go far... and she did smile.gif

Rita praises Madonna:

“[…] We have to thank icons who first of all fought for equal rights in the world of music and in life in general. They are women who I consider a constant source of inspiration: Madonna, Cher, Lady Gaga, Beyoncé and Jennifer Lopez.” - Rita Ora

'Ray of Light' is included in The Guardian's list of greatest #2 peaking singles:

QUOTE
36. Madonna – Ray of Light (1998)
You could have picked Holiday, Borderline, Crazy for You, Justify My Love, or, if you really must, Hanky Panky – No 2 hits all – but let’s plump for Ray of Light, the fabulous, if deeply improbable sound of Madonna turning a track by the obscure proggy folk duo Curtiss Maldoon into euphoric pop-trance.

I agree that there's a fair few worthy contenders from Madonna's #2s, but 'Ray of Light' is certainly my favourite! wub.gif

All Saints with their dodgy cover blocked Ray of Light (an injustice), and S Club 7's debut single which was a big deal blocked 'Beautiful Stranger' so I can understand that (even though I think BS would've made a much better #1)

'Crazy For You' has to be her most unfortunate miss though! #2 on both releases.

These were from the "Gotham Demo 1981 demo sessions", which included four tracks:

Tbh I blame the record label. All Saints were competing with the SPICY GIRLS at the time. It was a good bet that they would go in at no.1, even with weak material, and they should have known this. S Club was Simon Fuller's new band afte rmaking the Spicy Ones the biggest bans in the world. Again, a safe bet would have been to avoid their first two/ three weeks.

People remember Stranger and Ray, bur no one remembers All Saints' mopy cover, oe that S Club 7 cheese

Don't get me wrong, I much prefer 'Beautiful Stranger' but I can't see how that's remembered and 'Bring It All Back' isn't in the public consciousness.
