5 Years of One Direction
This month we celebrate 5 years of One Direction. In 2010, Niall Horan, Zayn Malik, Liam Payne, Harry Styles, and Louis Tomlinson auditioned as solo candidates for the seventh series of the British televised singing competition The X Factor. They failed to progress to the "Boys" category at "judges' houses" but were put together to form a five-piece boy band at Wembley Arena, in London, England, At the 23th of July 2010, during the "bootcamp" stage of the competition, thus qualifying for the "Groups" category. Nicole Scherzinger, a guest judge, and Simon Cowell have both claimed to have come up with the idea of forming the band. In 2013, Cowell said that it "took him 10 minutes to put them together as a group". Subsequently, the group got together for two weeks to get to know each other and to practice. Harry came up with the name One Direction. The first picture as a boyband Their X Factor Journey The Singles The albums Share your memories of 5 years of One Direction in the topic |

Excellent topic, Maurice
It's hard to believe it's been 5 years already I think, it feels like just last year they got formed! I remember seeing Harry, Liam and Niall's auditions so clearly, obviously Louis and Zayn's weren't televised. Harry was love at first sight Torn was a brilliant moment at Judges' Houses and I supported them throughout the live shows (although they weren't my clear faves ). What Makes You Beautiful is an incredible track for me even now, I've never once felt bored of it. A modern pop classic I think. I remember being on holiday when it premiered, I YouTube converted it on my sister's laptop, put it onto my iPod and listened to it for the first time in the bathroom It was pretty much on repeat for the whole holiday though, I was addicted. And the rest, as they say, is history |

Just a few comments personal to me, regarding them:
Firstly it's weird to think it's 5 years since that series of The X Factor! Possibly the last great series of the programme. Although I have to admit that I didn't exactly support One Direction during their time on the show. I considered a lot of their performances to be lacking, and at that point they hadn't really mastered the art of harmonising. I felt like they could have taken it to another level, but they never quite did for me during that time. I had trepidations about what their first song would be like, but I definitely couldn't deny that 'WMYB' was a great debut single. I developed #zaynvision at this point(!) but I remained a bit casual towards them as a group. I did buy the album out of interest (Zayn cover x) but I was underwhelmed at the time. Tbh outside of WMYB, OT and a couple of the album tracks it disappointed me. I was more on board with them during their second era, and it was 'Kiss You' in particular that turned me from a casual fan into a proper fan. I even bought tickets in 2013 for a 'Where We Are' Wembley date! Three years earlier, I'd have laughed at the suggestion that I'd buy tickets to see them. By the time they released 'Story Of My Life' it was love! Also my alliance switched from Zayn to Liam during this era. The 'Midnight Memories' album was another step forward in quality, and eventually that Wembley date rolled around. While I thought the show could have been more entertaining as a spectacle, I did have a great time being in attendance. A lot of their songs were so anthemic in that setting! 'FOUR' is possibly my favourite album of them all, but it's a close run thing between that and 'MM'. It contains my favourite ever album track by them, 'Stockholm Syndrome' . I'll be seeing them on the 'On the Road Again' tour with Jahq ( *.* ) in October. When we bought them they were still a 5 piece... but we will be getting a 4 piece, of course. I can't wait for Jak to experience 'Stockholm Syndrome. |

Midnight Memories still feels really lacking to me In terms of sound it's a definite step forward but in terms of quality it really lacks compared to the two albums either side especially! FOUR is definitely my favourite now

5 years ago at 8.22PM the band was formed by Simon Cowell and Nicole Scherzinger.
My first memory of the guys was ofcourse Liam's audition with 'Cry Me a River'. I found the audition really good! I wasn't a fan Harry's audition and with Nialls audition which was aired on the Xtra Factor i thought ''ugh another Bieber''. Then came bootcamp, which was the 1st time i saw Zayn who was called Zain at the time. Zayn was the guy who refused to dance at bootcamp which made me dislike him. We saw Liam and Harry both performing Leona's version of Stop Crying Your Heart Out. At that time i still thought Liam would make the final as a solo artist. We all saw happened and the boys became a band and sang 'Torn' at judges houses and i was sold. After the X Factor i decided to follow the band on their journey, watched all their twitcams, bought WMYB etc. Till the end of the Up All Night era Louis was my favourite (don't judge me). But since that it changed to Niall and he is still my favourite and i don't think that will change ever. If you would toldme 5 years ago i would stan for a band like i did for the Spice Girls in the 90s i would laugh right in your face. But those boys did it for me. |

It's so weird to think it's been 5 years now, it feels like just yesterday but it also like a lot longer than 5 years at the same time

But since that it changed to Niall and he is still my favourite and i don't think that will change ever. Thank God you've seen the light.I remember three years ago when my sister was watching a video of her friends lip-syncing "What Makes You Beautiful", and I was kinda confused by all the hype. One listen of just that one song and I became addicted. I literally said to myself, "Their U.S. domination is imminent." Four eras and one less band member later, I have all their studio tracks on my library, and nothing was ever what it was. That will be Fifth Harmony pretty soon. Or Bea Miller though I don't think that's a possibility. |
