BuzzJack Music Forum _ Pop _ Marshmello & Anne-Marie - Friends

Posted by: Juan Carlos 🌴 5th February 2018, 12:21 AM

Anne-Marie announced that she has a new song with Marshmello called "Friends" out this Friday on Facebook today. You could check the video https://www.facebook.com/iamannemarie/videos/vb.203431116371936/1581649065216794/.

Posted by: George.keh 5th February 2018, 12:36 AM

This and Calvin’s new song could be massive

Posted by: lewistgreen 5th February 2018, 06:08 AM

Yes! Marshnello's remix of Alarm was really good so this has potential!

Posted by: Lee_J11 5th February 2018, 11:59 AM

Casually sweeping 'Then' under the rug i see laugh.gif

Posted by: Theo. 5th February 2018, 12:34 PM

"Then" was a much better song than "Heavy", why they didn't push it I don't know.

Posted by: cqmerqn 5th February 2018, 12:35 PM

Imo Heavy was better as a single so I’m glad they went for that.

Then was a promo single I reckon.

Posted by: Dexton 5th February 2018, 12:37 PM

I like her & im excited for this but I really hope it’s nothing like Heavy & Then. They were nice but neither went anywhere and felt like album filler

Posted by: lewistgreen 5th February 2018, 01:34 PM

I just hope this means some kind of album confirmation is imminent, it's been too long!

Posted by: The Snake 5th February 2018, 02:24 PM

Firstly I didn't know Anne-Marie's speaking voice was rather like Adele's! Disappointed that video didn't have any song snippet in it sad.gif

Its probably right this is in pop even though both share equal crediting on the track, as I very much doubt this will be a very dancey production from Marshmello.

I liked this remix of Alarm but that was when he was more dancey and less traditional future bass with his productions!

Marshmello teased a snippet on Facebook, which you could see it https://www.facebook.com/marshmellomusic/videos/vb.924362607582271/1824141387604384/.

That said, I'm not totally sure how the credits are to be honest. In the snippet, it could be seen that it's Marshmello & Anne-Marie instead. ¯\_(ツ)_/¯

Posted by: The Snake 5th February 2018, 04:02 PM

Sounds pretty good from that preview!

Posted by: BridgeCow 5th February 2018, 05:12 PM

So excited for this, hope Anne-Marie can actually get another hit

Posted by: cqmerqn 5th February 2018, 06:05 PM

Sounds good! I think it’s Marshmello & Anne-Marie which is a shame.

Posted by: lewistgreen 5th February 2018, 07:52 PM

What difference does it make? It's a joint lead credit as opposed to a feature.

Posted by: cqmerqn 5th February 2018, 08:58 PM

Because for me it appears that it’s for Marshmello’s campaign.

Marshmello & Anne-Marie = his campaign
Selena Gomez & Marshmello = her campaign

That’s just my opinion though. So therefore I hope it’s AM x Marshmello

Even if it is his campaign (Marshmello doesn't really have a campaign tbh I don't think), it will still be a good boost for Anne-Marie if it does well!

Posted by: cqmerqn 5th February 2018, 09:04 PM

Well of course. I’m just being picky laugh.gif

If I had it my way it’d be AM x Marshmello

Posted by: M4NG0 6th February 2018, 11:40 AM

I actually had no idea her speaking voice was so chavvy (I know that makes me sound like a snob), it's a bit of a let down for me blink.gif

But on the plus side, the snippet of the song sounds very promising!

Posted by: cqmerqn 6th February 2018, 11:41 AM

You expect all singers to sound posh?

Posted by: Midge 6th February 2018, 01:47 PM

I wish it was X ft Y because it buggers up my last.fm when they call them duets tongue.gif

I wouldn't say chavvy, it just sounds like Adele's speaking voice really! wink.gif

Her speaking voice sounds it comes from someone a bit older than her 26 years of age!

Posted by: cqmerqn 6th February 2018, 06:01 PM

Yeah sounds like Adele!

Posted by: JosephSivan 7th February 2018, 04:29 PM

Cute artwork!

Posted by: mdh 7th February 2018, 04:32 PM

I feel as though this could be this years 'It Ain't Me' in terms of performance, release date and names (producer & female singer) - probably without the tropical influences though.

Posted by: cqmerqn 7th February 2018, 05:02 PM

Find the artwork a bit weird but there you go

Already sounds much better than 'It Ain't Me' imo judging by the preview!

Posted by: Connor. 8th February 2018, 12:53 PM

This is a bit of a bop.

Posted by: Dexton 8th February 2018, 04:57 PM

Oh sh*t this is good! Back to Ciao Adios style rather than Heavy/Then which is a nice change in direction:) Marshmello doesn't bring too much to the table, it's no Alone or Silence in terms of production but it's still a bop. Kinda strange how "f***ing" is beeped out (on Spotify only maybe?) but not "shit" tongue.gif. The last 50 seconds is amazing

Posted by: BridgeCow 8th February 2018, 06:58 PM

OMG BOP

Posted by: cqmerqn 8th February 2018, 07:42 PM

Think this should be moved to dance

Anyway, song is a strong 5/10

Posted by: Frooot 8th February 2018, 07:58 PM

I can't help but think 'Friends' is going to be either make or break for Anne-Marie, if it underperforms are radio going to bother pushing her and her material? I can't see the album performing very well either unless it was released during the success of 'Ciao Adios.

I'm not a massive fan of 'Friends' and I'm incredibly disappointed overall by the song itself, considering how Marshmello has delivered bops recently... I just expected better but I can't see this being a commercial hit anywhere if I'm being honest.

Posted by: lewistgreen 8th February 2018, 08:14 PM

Ooh this is really good!

Posted by: Midge 9th February 2018, 12:15 AM

It is a dance song I think, EDM trap with dubstep influence too in the drop, certainly dancier than 'Wolves' to my ears imo.

Whatever genre it is, its a TUNE imo! music.gif I would like it to become a hit!

It feels more pop than anything to me. I think it's getting harder and harder to give anything mainstream a genre though these days. It's all a hybrid of this and that.

Posted by: Tawdry Hepburn 9th February 2018, 01:42 AM

I don't really like a lot of the output from either artist, but this... isn't bad I guess?

Nothing remarkable.

Posted by: lewistgreen 9th February 2018, 06:06 AM

It’s actually really bugging me that she says F R I N D S as if the EN is one letter

Posted by: mdh 9th February 2018, 07:55 AM

this is pretty decent - and it does sound like a nailed on smash.

Posted by: JosephSprayberry 9th February 2018, 08:21 AM

This is amazing!!! Shocked at the lukewarm reaction so far, this is Anne-Marie's best since Ciao Adios. Packed full of personality. Loving it right from first listen.

Posted by: Midge 9th February 2018, 09:50 AM

Tbf I've only really liked her on "Rockabye", I found "Alarm" decent and I did "Ciao Adios" at first but it grew irritating fairly quickly. The rest I just haven't been fussed on.

Are you sure about that? tongue.gif

Posted by: M4NG0 9th February 2018, 10:38 AM

Not really sure what to make of this, the pre-chorus is really good but then the chorus lets it down a bit?

Posted by: Theo. 9th February 2018, 11:47 AM

This is good! Such a step up from "Heavy" although not quite "Ciao Adios" level yet. Two things I don't like about it are the production at the beginning of the final chorus, almost video game-like and the really loud beep in place of fuck.

Posted by: The Snake 9th February 2018, 03:26 PM

The video game style production is one of Marshmello's signature styles (before he went future bass)

So this is staying in the pop forum and isn't going to be deemed by Buzzjack a dance song then? I do think it is more dancey than marshmello's last Wolves tbh!

Posted by: Liаm 9th February 2018, 03:42 PM

Christ does it matter where a thread is? It's so tiring that every dance release has to have this tired debate. As it's joint I think it makes sense to leave it here for Anne-Marie.

Posted by: danG 9th February 2018, 04:01 PM

Neither of the dance mods are even bothered in most cases, it's always Snakey laugh.gif tongue.gif besides this song particularly is more pop than anything.

Not too keen on this on first listen anyway. marshmello is very hit and miss at the moment.

Posted by: The Snake 9th February 2018, 06:24 PM

Actually on listening to it more, the last chorus I do find a bit of a mess with Anne Marie speaking bits between her vocal.

The rest of it is very good though imo, its not generic tropical pop or future bass and has a good vocal from Anne-Marie.

Posted by: Juliano 9th February 2018, 07:38 PM

There were so many weak releases this week, and this saved the week for me. I like it.

Posted by: cqmerqn 9th February 2018, 10:05 PM

This is growing.

I personally love the bleeped ‘f**k’ part.

Can see this being pretty big tbf

I do like the beeped bit, its unique and adds more power to the f word than a fadeout

It actually sounds a bit early 00s R&B/pop in style this song I think!

Debuts at 17 in the UK Spotify

Posted by: lewistgreen 10th February 2018, 08:47 PM

The video is on Spotify if you stream through the Hot Hits UK playlist. It's cute.

Posted by: cqmerqn 10th February 2018, 09:11 PM

Yup saw it. Does it count as a stream? Could explain the high Spotify debut.

Posted by: JosephSprayberry 10th February 2018, 10:04 PM

Doubtful, it's basically the equivalent of music video downloads on iTunes! The high debut is a mix of high placings on NMF and Hot Hits, plus the name power of two current artists I'd assume.

Posted by: cqmerqn 10th February 2018, 10:12 PM

True - amazing song! Didn’t like it at first.

Hopefully this saves Anne-Marie!

Posted by: cqmerqn 11th February 2018, 10:19 AM

Climbs to 13 on its second day on Spotify!! ohmy.gif

Normally songs fall on their second day so that is great!!

Posted by: mdh 11th February 2018, 10:24 AM

I think video streams do count for the Spotify chart as they're essentially audio streams with a visualiser (like CHVRCHES' 'Get Out' last week) - that would explain the high debut for Selena Gomez's 'Fetish' last summer, and the climb for this today: as it's involved in some playlists on two ocassions.

Posted by: cqmerqn 11th February 2018, 10:38 AM

Fetish debuted at 61 tho

This is growing, though the bleep out line and it sounding like "FRINDS" are a bit irritating!

Posted by: Dobbo 13th February 2018, 11:48 AM

Felt nothing at all towards this on first hearing. Not good & not bad - but something I'll probably skip on the Chart Show.

Posted by: Liаm 13th February 2018, 11:53 AM

This is really growing on me but it's not dance at all and you'd never guess it's Marshmello. It would've been cool to hear her on a dance banger but this is a bloody good pop song if nothing else, reminds me of a slicker and sassier Don't by Ed Sheeran actually.

Posted by: cqmerqn 13th February 2018, 12:43 PM

I would say it was dance-pop then, which is still under the pop umbrella. I think you can still tell a bit its Marshmello, the 'video-game' type synths at the buildup to the last chorus that were mentioned on this thread and the EDM trap influence with the 'hey hey hey' in the background of the chorus.

Thank goodness he didn't go generic future bass for this one!

Its way better than Don't imo, although I get why it has been compared on here in terms of style.

Its not pure pop either, which is why I said dancepop.

As Cody said though it doesn't matter what genre it is, it sounds great imo and I too hope it does well in the charts (and contributes to the demise of boring imo tropical pop and future bass being chart trends with its different sound in the process).

Posted by: Midge 13th February 2018, 03:52 PM

Indeed, genre-lising every single song isn't really necessary in 2018. Hybrids and all that.

Ngl I don't care what genre it is it's just a good song laugh.gif As said in 2018 there's loads of influences from all corners so it isn't really necessary to label and box everything in.

Debuts at 19 in the UK which is strangely low considering it’s spotify performance

Should go top 10 next week

Posted by: Dexton 17th February 2018, 02:27 AM

I thought that too, it’s been Top 10 in Spotify for most of the week and iTunes has had it consistently been between i think 12 and 20 really, but it should be in for a big jump next week which is still great dance.gif

Posted by: jjake 17th February 2018, 06:07 AM

this is great, it has a lot of pop stuff / hooks / turns of expression going on...quite a few 90s teas

with the right material anne-marie’s voice is proper phenomenal

Me thinks Eden Prince has the grounds to sue over the identical start of the chorus to 'Obvious' magic.gif (unless it's a sample or w/e)

I can see this song being one that gets annoying really quickly like 'Ciao Adios' sad.gif Why can't Anne-Marie's actual good songs be hits? 'Then' is fab, can't believe that flew completely under the radar.

Posted by: Jack 15th March 2018, 10:01 AM

I like it, but there is something a bit cold about it - I even eventually felt the same with 'Ciao Adios'. Like it ticks all the boxes, but I find something about it fairly calculated if that makes sense?

'Alarm' will always be my favourite by her I think - and then I really liked 'Peak' and 'Then'.

Posted by: Midge 15th March 2018, 10:03 AM

I felt the same about "Ciao Adios" as well, Jack. Maybe it’s because both tracks share that whole "f u" attitude towards another party that makes her come across as arrogant. Meghan Trainor-esque!

I'm liking this a lot more than I expected to. I find Anne-Marie and Marshmello both incredibly hit and miss but this has quite a hooky chorus/post-chorus, and sonically it actually reminds me in parts of Spice era Spice Girls.

I worry about your ears actually. This is a huge banger.

I had my ears checked out and they hear perfectly apparently.

It's a huge banger in the toilet, yes.

huge banger? lmao it's a pile of shite

People are allowed different opinions :')

I don't mind it but as I said, this song does leave me cold. I only really love 'Alarm' by her out of her big singles, then I really liked 'Peak' and 'Then'.

Posted by: Midge 6th April 2018, 10:59 AM

"Alarm" is pretty much the only one of her solo tracks I like as well; "Then" was alright. Quite like the John Gibbons remix. And of course "Rockabye" is excellent though can't help but feel it'd have been even better with Ina Wrolsden on vocals.

Posted by: Cqmerqn 6th April 2018, 10:59 AM

Alarm is my favourite solo Anne-Marie song. Then feels like it’s going nowhere.

My updated Anne-Marie rank

Alarm
FRIENDS
Heavy
Rockabye
Ciao Adios
Do It Right
Then

Posted by: _jase 6th April 2018, 11:24 AM

"Ciao Adios" and "Heavy" are her best imo

Posted by: JosephAvery 6th April 2018, 11:45 AM

1. Ciao Adios
2. FRIENDS
3. Rockabye
4. Alarm - adore this top 4 wub.gif
5. Then - not really a single in the end, I like it but I'm glad it wasn't pushed
6. Heavy - good but she's capable of better
7. Do It Right - alright

Posted by: _jase 6th April 2018, 12:18 PM

"Rockabye" maybe comes in 2nd actually!

Posted by: Liаm 6th April 2018, 12:26 PM

Rockabye
Ciao Adios
Alarm
Friends
Do It Right
Heavy
Then

I love down to Do It Right but I don't think I've gone back to Then since it was released and Heavy is just flat.

I didn't mind "Ciao Adios" at first, quite liked it, but it ended up irritating the tits off me.

I really like the alternative music video for this.

I'm the same, loved it at first but I completely cannot stand it anymore, I think the same is happening with FRIENDS too...

I only really like 'Alarm' as well.

I feel like she's got talent, but unfortunately the music she's generally putting out is bollocks.

I think you’re mistaking her for Haillee Steinfeld kink.gif

1. Alarm
2. Do It Right
3. Friends
4. Rockabye
5. Ciao Adios
6. Catch 22 (perks of living in Australia)

Then & Heavy are equal last for me, I don’t go back to them and struggled to get into them in the first place.

Love this! Perfect lyrics for me! Feel like I have to fight off people every day - for reasons other than the ones stated in this song. But, I can relate!

Posted by: Bjork 7th April 2018, 05:39 PM

i agree that for some reasons I also end up hating all anne marie songs including this one, doesn't look very promising for her career/future

Yes I'm sure your opinion will quite literally ruin any chance she has of future success tongue.gif

Very much agree with you on this. It is very much down to material I’d say - she was definitely in the same region of potential as Dua and Zara I’d say but those two have definitely pulled ahead with Anne Marie falling behind. I’d love her to make it a bit bigger but I won’t hold out for it.

Oh good lord, Bjork from Buzzjack dislikes her music. Her label may as well just drop her sad.gif

can this song not die already :')

on the plus side '2002' probably won't be a US hit then.

A well deserved hit

This is #4 on radio in US and slowly creeping up the chart.

Has a peak of #11 so far, but I hope it goes top 5 at some point smile.gif
