HEAT 10

Welcome to heat ten of Super Eurovision II! Pavel has handed over the hosting of this heat to me due to time constraints so you will have to make do with a lack of exciting commentary to start this thread of with, but I shall give a quick overview.

As luck would have it, the first country in this heat is Estonia who have one of the strongest back catalogues of entries, up there with the likes of Sweden, Cyprus and Albania (although the latter two may be just me). Following a couple of poor results with their first entries into the contest, Estonia became a Eurovision superpower in the late 1990s and early 2000s with 6 top ten finishes and a victory in 2001 with 'Everybody'. However the introduction of the semi-finals saw Estonia's success decline dramatically despite several fabulous songs ('Leto Svet' NOT being one of them) with their first qualification under the semi-final format not arriving until 2009. 'Rändajad' was the first winner of the new Eesti Laul national selection process, now one of the unmissable national finals, and gave Estonia their best result since Sahlene's 3rd place in the 2002 Estonian-hosted contest. Estonia continue to provide us with very high quality entries and now qualify more often that not, with 'Kuula' and 'Goodbye To Yesterday' providing two further top 10 finishes since 2009.

Next up in this heat we have Iceland, another country with a very strong Eurovision history in recent years. However, Iceland's Eurovision success didn't properly start until the removal of the language restrictions when Selma immediately took advantage to finish second in 1999. Consistency remained an issue for Iceland until 2008 when the country managed seven consecutive qualifications including another second place with Yohanna, a run which came to an end last week with the non-qualification of Maria Olafs. Yet many people believe that Iceland definitely have the potential to secure a Eurovision victory in the near future, and their tendency to send high quality entries back this up.

Thirdly, we have Poland who are one of the least successful Eurovision countries with their only top 5 finish coming in their debut. Since their debut they have only managed one further top 10 finish with Ich Troje in 2003 and only managed to qualify once between 2005 and 2011, and even then Isis Gee only managed 24th in the final. After a two contest break, Poland returned in 2014 with their best result since 2003 thanks to Donatan & Cleo.

Finally, we have Monaco who returned to Eurovision in 2004, their first participation since the 1970s. Unlike other microstates, Monaco never got anywhere close to qualification under the semi-final format and after three very unsuccessful years Monaco withdrew from the contest for the second time. Their brief return did give Eurovision their first song sung in Tahitian when Séverine Ferrer sung 'La Coco-Dance' in 2006.

You must use the traditional Eurovision voting system (12, 10, 8, 7, 6, 5, 4, 3, 2 and 1 point). If a country had less than 10 participations between 1995 and 2014 then you must rank ALL of their entries but still use the same voting system described earlier. For example, if a country has only 7 entries then your votes will be 12, 10, 8, 7, 6, 5 and 4 points.

In fact this is VERY MUCH a list of countries WAY better in the late 90s/early 00s than they are now

Estonia used to be a lot less reliable for quality than they are now. Urban Symphony/Eesti Laul really did wonders. I suppose the 90s entries from what I remember were quite good but between their win and Randajad it's very very up and down. I do have a soft spot for Let's Get Loud though.

Iceland are very strong throughout, will be tough to choose where my points go I'm sure. Can't really remember what I've heard of the Polish entries before their return in 2014 that well but I think I like one of the Ich Troje entries.

Estonia 1999-2002 is so incredible for me, Goodbye To Yesterday though is better than all but one of those, shame we can't vote for it yet.

Iceland are so consistent, it was quite hard to rank the top 6 or 7 there as they have nearly all finished in the 31-40 region in my end of year charts.

I care not for Poland, save for the iconic Ich Troje x2 <3

'Runaway'



'Diamond of Night' was actually putting up a very close fight for second for most of the week which was to my surprise, it didn't click with me like 'Keelatud maa' did for example from the pre-2000 entries. Still a good song though, but two fantastic qualifiers! Getter was pretty close, she held 2nd place for most of the voting.

That's a very good showing for Kuula. Pleased with that. And with Randajad qualifying, as I expected it to.

Pretty suprisingly low for Partners In Crime, I'd have liked to give that points and it's not a bad effort by any means. Then again the only Estonian entry I have no time for in the slightest is Eighties Coming Back, all the others are at least pleasant. Even Leto Svet.

Ich Troje returned to Eurovision in 2006, with a better song in my opinion, but didn't manage to qualify finishing in 11th position. However they have qualified here (in no particular order of course), will their first Eurovision entry make it two out of two?

Ich Troje couldn't make it two out of two, time will tell if they beat Donatan and Cleo to victory in this heat. 'Ale jestem' was in second spot for the majority of the voting, but unfortunately lost momentum in the end. It's definitely one of the best pre-2000 entries I've discovered though!

'Is It True?'

The fantastic Yohanna is the first of our Icelandic qualifiers, time will tell if she was first in the heat. I'm not sure if I'm supposed to reveal this but I will anyway, the difference between second and third was just one point and the top 5 were covered by just 12 points and 6th was only a few points further back! It was incredibly close all the way through the voting, but who is joining Yohanna and qualifying?

Hera is our second qualifier! Selma was all out of luck and finished sixth, but that top 6 were insanely close through the voting process. One of our two qualifiers was never in the top 2 until the very final vote! 'Never Forget' was a big surprise for me, I was expecting it to be around 6th or so at best but I'm very pleased it got so close. It was in the top 2 after the penultimate vote and like I said, missed out by just 1 point in the end!

So unless Nocturne manages to power its way past Berger/Mwangi/Haukaas Storeng/Rybak(?) we'll be 1995-less. Given I doubt the Russian, Slovenian or Bosnian entries from then will work out. That's pretty good to have gotten at least one from every other year though.

Polish Qs are both incredible. So pleased! Sahlene tho ugh. Would have preferred Tout de moi from Monaco but y'all absolutely CRUSHED Armenias Anytime You Need for no reason so yeah i had no faith in yo taste.

Minn hinsti dans a bit too low. It is so funny that the top 2 got only 3 12s and mine didnt go to Yohanna so that means she was not such a runaway winna after all. What a flop. Silas is the floppest fan as well not voting in this. So embarrassing.

Major thankses to Ms Ryan for stepping in last week but Bosnia is next and I cant let anyone else do the heat with my favourite Eurovision country.
