It’s Dusty’s 1966 classic finally topping my chart 50 years late. You Don’t Have To Say You Love Me topped the UK chart that year, but predated my charts (though she would have certainly topped my fictional chart in 1964, cos I was mad as a hatter for I Just Don’t Know What To Do With Myself age 6, which topped as an album track eventually). It’s therefore her 7th Number One since she first did it with the Pet Shop Boys in 1987.

Highest new entry is at 4 for FMLYBND, very in the synth pop tradition of a few years back, and fab, while in at 9 it’s Francis & The Lights joining Fitz & The Tantrums in the top 10, with some help from Bon Iver (and in the video Kanye West), and terrific new single, Friends. Fab. GLADES jumps into the 10, Kungs replace themselves in the top 40 with a great new track that seems to have a Lightning Seeds riff in it, and the producer Roberto Rosan of German-based classical-pop act Sweetbox (hit in 1997 with Everything’s Gonna Be Alright and active onwards since then) has a new project SYMPHOBIA who have dabbled with a bit of Tchaikovski also to good hip hop effect, I Do I Do believe.

In a deluge of new acts, I’ve had to expand my chart once again to 100, just when I was hoping to chop it down to 75! Doh! Happily that means room for new singles from Sophie Ellis-Bextor, 14 years on since she murdered the dancefloor on top of my charts, not to mention Spiller, Florence + The Machine, and an oldie from Herb Alpert (a light-hearted instrumental jazz cover of the 1965 hit A Walk In The Black Forest - another track I was big on at the time, as done by German Horst Jankowski). I was only 7 but I loved a good pop tune! Talking of golden oldies, Petula Clark is back at the age of 83 with a good contemporary-sounding ballad 4 years after topping my charts for the second time, and the oldest person to do that with new material (Cut Copy Me). Pet was having hits before I was born, hard as that is to believe, and I intend to see her in concert later this year to enjoy the new and recent stuff and the huge list of golden 60’s singles (I hope).
