QUOTE
22 years after they first sang this song, Bryan and Melanie return with a re-recording and new video of their classic "When You're Gone". Filmed backstage in Melanie's hometown of Widnes, England.

Such a classic it’s a crime it’s not a #1! Loved the bit where Mel did the handstand from Bryan’s laugh it looks like it was random!

I'll admit my first reaction to this rerecording was...why? But okay. Sounds like Bryan's having the same trouble with owning his masters that Taylor Swift was (in fact, he says he got this idea from Taylor). This version seems only slightly different from the original...and as such, I do like the original slightly better. The opening of the original seems to have a little more punch...and Mel's laugh (huh-huh!) is gone from the end of this one...aw. But. Though it was done quick and cheap, this video honestly is cute...and Mel brings a lot of spark to it.

Ultimately, I guess I'm just glad Mel's still on the track. Some of you may remember when Bryan released Anthology and replaced Mel with...Pamela Anderson (?!). Not trying to attack Pam...as the world's certainly been mean enough to that woman. But. Mel's take is so obviously 100% better. Pam's version sounds like a regular woman who was singing along to the song in her car.

From Bryan's perspective it probably makes financial sense but the cheap video and slightly worse version make no real sense for the fan/s to watch or listen to.

I have no desire to watch it ever again and I love the song. Still any exposure for the song is good as it is a brill song.

I'm amazed at how little their voices have aged. They both sound fantastic!

I enjoyed the video and this new version - they both sound similar to how they did in the original recording, which is quite remarkable after 24 years!

What stopped it from going no.1, apart from Brysn Adam's unibrow? It is a classic though:(

New version is good but misses a little bit of the punch the original has.

'When You're Gone' ended up significantly outselling 'Hard Knock Life', so I think Bryan and Melanie at least deserved #2 that week! That was Believe's 7th and final week at the top. That chart was Sunday 6th December 1998.

On 10th January 1999, which was When You're Gone's 6th week in the chart (at #6), it finally moved ahead of Believe (#7 that week). Hard Knock Life at #25.

31st January 1999 - When You're Gone was #5, Believe was #23 and Hard Knock Life was only #57!

The fact 'Hard Knock Life' beat it is actually pretty outrageous.

In other news, I've noticed that the original video has been re-mastered in HD for YouTube:

Re-recording older material is becoming more popular among artists to help gain more control of their music.
I think Mel may do this eventually if she ever proceeds with a Greatest Hits release.
