Years & Years Shine being pipped to the post by whatever it was is also a recent travesty. I think that was expected to smash as *even better than King* which people who didn't already know the band were surprised by at the time.

That 'whatever' would be David Zowie 'House Every Weekend' which was widely expected by Buzzjack users to be that week's #1. Not exactly a huge chart shock, what really was shocking was the fact Y&Y were so close to beating it to #1.

It maybe wasn't a shock but was certainly a chart upset, given Y&Y would have almost certainly been #1 had it been a proper chart week (this was when the chart moved Sunday to Friday).

tbf david zowie would've won far more convincingly had spotfiy streaming data been avaliable for that shortened week~

Y&Y had better streams from what was available and remained above David Zowie in following weeks though.

had it been a proper chart week spotify streaming data would've been included and if i recall correctly david zowie had better streams at the time, so i think he would've still been #1

edit: from the week after the '5 day/no spotify data' chart week - Zowie is at #9 and Y&Y at #10 in the streaming chart so Zowie would certainly have had more Spotify streams the week he went to #1 http://www.officialcharts.com/charts/audio.../20150717/7507/

I think Shime would have made the top spot, it had a strong lead on iTumes the whole week, and back a year ago streaming had not taken over quite enough to have had THAT much of an effect, Y&Y's streaming was increasing on a day to day basis.

Either way, I think it was an upset because it was clearly the bigger hit in the end. HEW went 1-5-4-8 while Shine went 2-2-3-2 and sold 300k more. HEW ended up going gold and doing better than people. Were predicting when it fell to 5 in its second week though.

Both are great songs in very different ways.

Shine was a complete FAIL from Years & Years, had they released the single on Spotify a week or two before they would have been #1. FAIL FAIL FAIL.

What About Us going to #1 and selling 114,000.
Pixie Lott going to #1 with Mama Do & Boys & Girls.

Alexis Jordan 'Happiness' going top 5 was a major shock for me.

Okay, it's debatable who would or wouldn't have got to #1 but that either way just adds to fact it is one of the chart's biggest upsets! biggrin.gif

Yeah, it definitely felt like Y&Y were more deserving as they hadn't held back stupidly long and help up much better. That said, however, I still hear 'House Every Weekend' lots on Saturday nights so still stands the test of time, even if the chart run didn't reflect that.

Maybe so, but holding back the streaming (Polydor's decision) cost them the number 1, which was incredibly stupid - yes it was mostly missing from the midweeks that week but it did the damage in the end.

They were hyped but mainly by indie enthusiasts, it was a surprise for them to hit the no1 spot. Think it was only B List on radio 1 until it charted too so radio 1 daytime wasn't TOTALLY behind it.

That's what I thought. Having said that, Domino had shown at the start of the year with Franz Ferdinand that they had the means to get records into shops in a way that indie labels hadn't in the past, so it wasn't that big a surprise perhaps. Maybe Franz Ferdinand going so high with 'Take Me Out' is a bigger upset then.

Any of the big indie hits from 2003-2005 were more as a result of a complete nadir in sales though rich, I think at one point you could get a #3 with just 7K?

Ah, that's very true. Still resulted in a few surprising new entries.

I guess things were more of a shock to me before I listened to things like the Evening Session. I remember being really surprised when Ride and Jesus & Mary Chain went in at 9 and 10 respectively one week. Also when Therapy? scored a top 10 hit with Screamager. Once I started listening more to evening Radio1 I was expecting them more.

The media get hold of "shocks" too quickly now though. Rage Against the Machine being number 1 wasn't a shock as the campaign was previewed in the weeks before and it became pretty clear, pretty quickly that they were going to be on top. It was far more of a shock when Iron Maiden went straight to the top with Bring Your Daughter to the Slaughter (and, yeah, I know that's cos of the slow January sales).

Last Christmas never reaching #1 is an upset (even though it was beaten by another fabulous song in 1984)

I suppose last year's XF winner doing so poorly could be one too. #9 and then freefall with never particularly strong sales or even sympathy purchases is a big contrast to previous winners

I hear HEW loads at clubs too. I don't think I've ever heard Shine at a club to be honest. But Shine is like a mid tempo song, it's nowhere near as dancey so I guess that kind of explains that. I still hear Shine on the radio loads though, still played on Radio 1, Capital and Kiss a few times a week whereas I can't remember the last time I heard HEW on the radio.
