I've had a Janet marathon today, started from 'Control' and I've just completed my first ever listen to her self-titled release. All I can say is that, soon as lockdown is over, the first thing I'm doing is buying those three albums on vinyl. Janet is queen of sexy slow jamz. 'The Velvet Rope' next!
Previous threads:
YES LIAM!! The Velvet Rope is my favourite, but janet. and Rhythm Nation are masterpieces too.
I don't thinks she really has a dud album? Her first two are patchy and not the most thrilling of listens, and Discipline is a RIDE, but her consistency is incredible.
Yeah I thought I'd skip her first two as I think 'Control' is where she got into her stride and found her own style.
I'm intrigued to hear her 21st century albums. 'Control' through to 'The Velvet Rope' seem to be adored critically and by fans, but everything after seems to get overlooked. I know 'Unbreakable' is fantastic, probably not heard it in full since its release but I still regularly give 'BURNITUP' a spin.
You’re in for a treat with The Velvet Rope
One of my all time favourite albums.
Janet, Rhythm Nation and The Velvet Rope are my top three too, have always had a soft spot for Damita Jo too though.
All For You’s definitely my least favourite, but it’s not bad by any means.
I've split this into a new thread, for whenever we just want to discuss her in general (aka - every week x)
For me it goes Janet > The Velvet Rope > Rhythm Nation > Control > the rest. Those 4 are amazing though. The Velvet Rope I really enjoy but I lose interest after I Get Lonely... and it really frustrates me that Special just stops at the moment I really think it needs to explode!
My favourite song these days is If, although it's close between that, This Time and Got 'Til It's Gone.
I'll stick The Velvet Rope on tomorrow and see how much further though her albums I can get! 'Together Again' is a tune, she got it just right with this one with it becoming her biggest hit here in the UK.
A lot of her music will be best appreciated by listening to the albums in full, so if I were to pick favourites that I'd specifically seek out it would the big dance-pop moments like 'Escapade' and 'Miss You Much' (particularly the Shep Pettibone remix for the latter). Those ones have stuck with me since I listened to her Best of Number Ones compilation on Spotify last year - in fact, 'Escapade' is the one to beat! 'That's the Way Love Goes' does sound great in isolation though, the production is so dreamy and soothing that it makes me so peaceful.
I've listened to Damita Jo this evening. It's far from my favourite - in fact, it's probably mid/low-table for me but even within this there are songs such as 'Thinkin' Bout My Ex' that are so moving and beautiful. Even in her weakest projects there is a story and moments of complete magic.
You cannot live without
1. The Velvet Rope
2. Control
3. Janet
Liam order them on amazon you will get some bargains !!
ps Liam get the Velvet Rope on red vinyl if you can, it's absolutely lush
Janet album is amazing, also her last really wasn't that bad.
She has had some great albums and songs down through the years, her last couple of albums have not done well though.
Completely agree about her albums being such complete packages! She's definitely an album artist in that sense.
In terms of favourite songs, these would be high on my list:
Love Will Never Do (Without You)
Velvet Rope
If
Every Time
You
Rhythm Nation
No Sleeep is probably up there too now, so smooth.
I listened to all four Noughties albums but I can't say they really hooked me. I was doing other things when listening (although tbf I did the same with the other albums) so I might give them another go with headphones.
Found this megamix which I'm loving. 'Nasty' vocals over 'If' instrumental is fierce and there's a great order of songs.
The 'Control' album is currently in the top 10 on US iTunes Is it because of a similar reason to Mariah's 'E=MC2' resurgance? Either way, great to see it!
Random but deserved! Can Madonna be next?
Janets always been someone for me who I’ve never fully gotten tbh aside from a few tracks.
Like it’s her music itself though what doesn’t grab me I can’t deny her talents as a show woman or deny she made/makes strong visuals it’s just the actual songs on their own sort of go over my head.
I feel similar to Beyoncé and it’s strange that I’ve noticed that Janet in some ways was like the OG Bey. I think it could be that Janet wasn’t a Major vocalist or an artist who’s material was heavily pop which may be why I wasn’t as invested in her as I was other females who were around the same time she was.
I will say Together Again is stunning and is one of my favourite all time tracks. It’s interesting Janet was huge in the US though yet in the UK she didn’t have the same level of success. I think an average UK person would be pushed to name say 5 Janet songs off the top of their head but everyone would know who she was by face.
Your two favourite Britney albums contain Janet influences!
Janet was phenomenally successful in the US, and while she was still a big star in the UK she was usually more successful with albums than singles. For instance 'Rhythm Nation 1814' reached #4 and certified Platinum, even though none of the singles from it went Top 10. She hit her commercial peak with 'janet.' reaching #1, and after that her 'Design of a Decade 1986/1996' collection was an even bigger seller!
Amazing to see Janet joining Mariah in the US iTunes Top 10!
I really need to get around to listening to all of Janet's albums - I've only heard Control, The Velvet Rope and Unbreakable in full.
Happy 2nd birthday to 'Made For Now'!
Janet has celebrated this anniversary on her social media with a fun-filled BTS video:
I love it! It's one of my favourite Janet songs
2 years since then and still no follow up though
Some of you may have seen these Madonna fan made covers (in comic style). http://www.buzzjack.com/forums/index.php?showtopic=229761 ~ They are an absolute TREAT. Very, very happy that the artist behind these has decided to create the same for JANET's albums
Here is the first in the instalment: 'Control'
Yess!! Been waiting so long for these ones and the first installment doesn't disappoint! The next three will be rich with possible material.
For those who don't know, references to each song are included in these pieces - can you spot them all?
Slant Magazine have ranked Janet's albums - were they right?
https://www.slantmagazine.com/music/every-janet-jackson-album-ranked/
Oh yes I LOVE that one!
Watched her perform ‘Rhythm Nation’ on TOTP 1989 this week
Agreed! Absolutely love it, but it doesn’t really fit the album for me either.
Can’t WAIT to see the Velvet Rope one 😍 I’ve been listening to it a lot recently and I’ll just never tire of it. In my top 5 albums of all time ❤️
Also makes me realise how much we need new music from her soon.
Hopefully the album will be out next year – I’m sure it would’ve been out this year if it wasn’t for the pandemic 🙃
Just played Discipline for the first time in full in years, the first half still sounds great!
Also been obsessed with the Janet album after finding the vinyl on Amazon for cheaper than usual, 'This Time' is so good
I don't immediately think of the album either from the graphics but I agree it's a good composition. I wonder if the artist is as familiar with Janet's work as he was with the discographies of Madonna and Björk as he doesn't seem to be including as many of the hints towards tracks as he did with those.
How good was 'So Much Betta' from Discipline
The Control album turns 35! Janet has acknowledged the milestone on her social media:
Happy anniversary, Control Give me a beat!
There seems to be a download campaign to celebrate the anniversary. It has managed to get to #1 on the US pop iTunes album chart (~#20 on full iTunes chart).
I spent yesterday watching through a chunk of Janet's music videos, starting from the 'Control' era. That run of 'The Pleasure Principle' -> 'Miss You Much' -> 'Rhythm Nation'... wow! That choreography! I think 'Alright' is my favourite so far (I've got up to her first greatest hits album) and I realised that it must have inspired the routine between Oti and Bill Bailey's "couple's choice" dance on the last series of Strictly!
! Wow, this will be essential viewing if done right. She has one of the most fascinating careers in music.
IDK. I wonder if they'll even touch upon Leaving Neverland to be honest, or just tip-toe around it.
Will definitley have to watch it. I hope they get down to the nitty gritty and don't gloss over a number of subjects.
"All For You" is still a bop.
In terms of this battle, I never actually expected Janet to win. But I cant agree with you. Michael, at his best, did better than Janet ever did, however I think over the course of their two careers assuming your just talking solo stuff. The Jackson 5/The Jacksons might put Michael over the edge. Its arguable., Janets overall body of work is better than Michaels. He had two excellent albums, and a couple of good singles otherwise. She was good from Control until All For You. 86-01. Whether you can give that credit to Janet herself, or Jimmy Jam and Terry Lewis, I dont know. You can make the same argument for Michael and Quincy Jones, though. ETA: Of course, in terms of just singles, Michael blows Janet out of the water.
'All For You' is finally unblocked and available to view worldwide! Remastered in HD too.
Finally! So bizarre that it was restricted to Canada and Japan for 10 years. Her online presence with music videos still requires a lot of work
Ahead of her documentary, Janet has covered Allure magazine and it's a great photoshoot. This image in particular is stunning:
She also did a breakdown of some of her videos for Allure which was uploaded last month:
Fascinating watch! I could do with a follow up tbh.
Love her, please have a comeback!!!
The documentary is out in the US. Nice to see a boost for her back catalogue:
iTunes Albums:
4. Control
6. Design of a Decade 1986/1996
9. Rhythm Nation 1814
13. Janet.
16. The Velvet Rope
18. Best of Number Ones
26. Unbreakable
52. Damita Jo
55. All for You
60. Discipline
96. 20 Y.O.
Good to see her getting a boost, very much deserved as the last 15 years have been so difficult for her. So underrated. Always very curious to see the show but it doesn't seem to be available online everywhere.
Finished the documentary series and am blown away with it. I thought I loved her before but learning about her life has made me respect her even more than I did before. A phenomonal woman and blueprint for music!
I have a link if anyone wants it to watch it online~
Ooh yes please!
Watching Rhythm Nation Tour on Youtube for the first time!!

~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
Slowly but surely her presence on streaming and YouTube is improving. The situation with videos on YouTube has been a mess for a very long time. A lot weren't uploaded, while others were blocked from being able to be viewed in most countries (so bizarre!). Understandably this really irritated her fanbase.
^ Together Again in HD looks artificial, I think it's just AI software. It's preferable to 360p, but I wish they'd have been able to find the original reels for it and work on it again, because it's such a stunning video and I don't think its current quality really does it much justice.
As things stand these are still missing from her channel: Alright, Runaway, Together Again (Go Deeper Remix), You, Everytime, Just A Little While & All Nite (Don't Stop).
Doesn't Really Matter was only uploaded 3 days ago:
Make Me has been re-uploaded in 4K!
I Get Lonely has been on her channel since 17th November 2010 but it was blocked throughout most of the world until 4 days ago. In almost 12 years it only managed 220,000 views. I'd love to know how or why her record label didn't notice or care until now. Not only that but this video's default picture used to be Beverley Knight Come As You Are CD sleeve image, but thankfully they've updated that too!
It was this:
The I Get So Lonely situation is weird because it's not like it was some low-charting single - it went #3 in the US and #5 in the UK!
On the other hand it goes in hand with her (former) label(s) not really caring about her stuff for whatever reason; I remember in the early 00s, pre-YouTube, streaming and social media that everyone was complaining how messy her (lack of) updated certifications were! Hopefully they'll start sorting that out too.
ETA: Janet actually hasn't had a RIAA certification since 2006 (!) when the label quickly certified 20YO as Gold.
Still waiting for the release of Special (the not cut off just as it’s properly building 2022 right that wrong remix)
When I checked out Janet's discography at the start of lockdown, I do remember her YouTube channel being an absolute shambles. I had noticed a few videos being unblocked last year (the key one I remember was 'All for You') and I'm glad that's continued to the point where we nearly have all her videos uploaded.
25 anniversary of 'The Velvet Rope' in a few days! Need to revisit her albums again as it's been a while since I've listened.
25 years since one of my favourite albums of all time. The Velvet Rope is such a special listen, it evokes so many emotions throughout it. I am super excited for the deluxe version!
Also:
Justice for Just a Little While! a song I've barely ever heard
P.S.
Come As You Are is a fucking tune tho.
This is now the Come As You Are appreciation thread:
Omg at that 240p quality
Christ, Beverly Knight also needs updating on her YouTube page.
I remember being obsessed with this song when it came out & I was sooooo happy when it made the top 10
This was a great sang
not people unironically turning this into a come as you are appreciation thread ajsjdhfhf
Incredible song
👀
What has happened to this once glorious, perfect thread x
It got better *.*
25th anniversary edition of THE VELVET ROPE is out today
Janet Jackson will reissue The Velvet Rope on Friday, October 7, for the classic album’s 25th anniversary. The new edition comes with two rarities, “Accept Me” and “God’s Stepchild,” as well as 13 remixes, many of which are streaming for the first time. Several videos from the album will also be remastered for the release.
I'm not mad on any of the bonus material here. The Tony Humphries mix of Together Again is quite nice (although not a patch on the original obvs) but my main thought about it is how long must the original mix be if the edit version is still 10 mins!
♥️♥️♥️
Free Xone
The Velvet Rope is a 10
Enjoy has to be one of her most underrated tracks. Alongside Nothing.
I got really into Janet this year. I think she's having a club renaissance in terms of her older work
Yes! Really happy to hear that. Control is really where she began as an artist so I'm so excited for you to listen to what else is to come. Maybe repeated listens for the next 3 albums too
