BuzzJack Music Forum _ Dance _ Clean Bandit feat. Sean Paul & Anne-Marie - Rockabye

QUOTE
After the orchestrally amazing Louis Johnson-assisted anthem "Tears", English electronic music quartet Clean Bandit is ready to strike back the radio waves with a next single.
The current untitled track is expected to be released in the coming weeks as second taste of the group’s upcoming second studio album and follow-up to acclaimed 2014’s LP “New Eyes“. This new project will be available later this year or early 2017 via Atlantic Records.

Exciting! Hoping for something different to Come Over though.

A collaboration I never would've expected! Really hope it's as good as the prospect of it sets it up to be!

Barang barang!

Posted by: Cremey Oct 8 2016, 11:25 AM

They're pretty hit and miss with me but judging by the features artists I'm thinking this will definitely be a HIT

Posted by: danG Oct 8 2016, 11:30 AM

This already looks like it'll be better than 'Tears' with Sean Paul as a feature dance.gif

Posted by: JosephStyles Oct 8 2016, 11:42 AM

Tears is by FAR their best song so I've got high hopes for this, especially with Anne-Marie involved wub.gif

Posted by: TheSnake Oct 8 2016, 11:45 AM

Yes I hope they continue down the funky disco house route after Tears.

What happened to the Marina collab by the way. Why was it not released?

Posted by: Cameron Oct 8 2016, 11:49 AM

This sounds like it could be incredible!

This really saddens me, as it sounded by far the best thing they've ever done.

Can't stand Sean Paul, his voice goes right through me but I can sometimes put that aside if the song he's on is good enough.

Posted by: cqmerqn Oct 8 2016, 04:22 PM

It'll take a lot to beat Tears.

Posted by: jase. Oct 8 2016, 08:28 PM

VERY excited about this! Such a random collab laugh.gif

Clean Bandit and Anne-Marie are confirmed to be performing at the MOBO Awards together, so seeing as that's on November 4th we should get the single before then!

Really shocked, the band won't be the same without him

Posted by: danG Oct 19 2016, 12:50 PM

Why exactly has he left then? The article or his twitter post doesn't make it very clear.

Posted by: Jonjo Oct 20 2016, 11:58 AM

Popjustice have posted an article on their site. They say this is EVEN BETTER than 'Tears'! It sounds like Ace Of Base appaz. Not sure if it's out there though!

Posted by: ★Rob S~ Oct 20 2016, 12:20 PM

Wow another excellent song. Anne sounds fantastic on this too. Not sure if I prefer it to 'Tears' but it's definitely equal with it. Certainly ticks all the boxes though wub.gif

Posted by: ML Hammer95 Oct 20 2016, 01:05 PM

This sounds like a surefire hit surely? Sean Paul racking up these pop features too! Not very unique in the way Tears was probably more, straying close to the tropical house sound 2016 has become known for. Should be in the Top 40 into 2017 though.

Posted by: Taylor Jago Oct 20 2016, 01:44 PM

I like it, but it's nowhere near as good as Tears, which was really something special and unique.

Still, the lyrics tell a story, unlike pretty much every other hit single in the last 12 months, so that's a big yes from me.

Posted by: TheSnake Oct 20 2016, 02:06 PM

Not really a fan of this...just generic tropical future bass, I prefer the Clean Bandit retro sounding funky house songs like Stronger and Tears.

But if you listen to their debut album it's a blend of genres with classical influence which I think works a lot better than having something which sounds the same for every single song.

Posted by: Burbe G Oct 20 2016, 02:19 PM

I love it on first listen! Not quite as good as "Tears", but it's sounding pretty instant so it's surely only up from here.

Posted by: jase. Oct 20 2016, 07:50 PM

That melody wub.gif

I loved 'Tears' but this is so much better. It's gonna be huge!

Posted by: mr_pmt Oct 20 2016, 08:10 PM

Getting both Ace Of Base and 'Sex On The Beach' vibes from this.

Posted by: Ryan. Oct 20 2016, 11:20 PM

It's quite good but it feels so generic for Clean Bandit, they've lost their uniqueness with this song. It's a generic tropical dance song that could've come from any of the mainstream DJs at the moment. Sean Paul almost ruins it as well!

For what it is it is decent, but I expect so much better from Clean Bandit.

Posted by: Liаm Oct 20 2016, 11:54 PM

WHAT A f***ING TUNE

I mean it's no Tears or Rather Be but they've set a high bar with those. Anne-Marie's voice is so so good on this, and whilst it's generic it just makes you want to dance and it does remind me of 90s songs like the ones mentioned above laugh.gif

Posted by: JosephStyles Oct 21 2016, 12:03 AM

This definitely doesn't feel like a Clean Bandit song, I'd say it would fit in better alongside Anne-Marie's songs actually, particularly Alarm and what we've heard of Breathing Fire. It's excellent nonetheless, I echo the praise of Anne-Marie's vocals, she sounds great wub.gif Sean Paul is as fun as ever too *.* not as good as Tears but a worthy follow-up!

Posted by: twentyonemdh Oct 21 2016, 07:53 AM

First, this is brilliant. Sounds like a massive top 5 and they've nailed the 'winter hit' vibe.

Secondly, I'm struggling to take it seriously in places because Sean (as always laugh.gif) makes some completely pointless contributions, for example saying 'DAILY STRUGGLE' sounding far too excited in the middle of a sad, negative verse, and shouting things like 'STRAIGHT' and 'DON'T BOTHER CRY'. It makes the song if anything, though :,)

Posted by: Taylor Jago Oct 21 2016, 08:01 AM

Yeah, Sean Paul's contribution does sound bizarre in Anne-Marie's verse. You can tell singing in a song telling a meaningful story is something he's never done before.

Posted by: Josh. Oct 21 2016, 02:28 PM

Clean Bandit deliver another great tune then. Still do prefer Tears because the violins always sound so fresh/unique and this is sorely lacking in those aside from the ending which feels a little tacked on. The chorus is very catchy and I think Anne-Marie was a great choice for vocalist on the track. I like some of the Sean Paul bits too but bit annoying when he's shouting random stuff like 'daily struggle' and 'for all the single mums out there going through frustration' laugh.gif drama.gif

Posted by: lewistgreen Oct 21 2016, 04:24 PM

Posted by: Froot. Oct 21 2016, 04:51 PM

Sean Paul really enhanced Cheap Thrills and Hair for me but he nearly ruins this. It's such a strong and meaningful story, with the content being unlike anything that has been in the charts for YEARS, but I can't really take it seriously when Sean keeps popping up unnecessarily. It's a good song but it would have been incredibly strong without Sean Paul. The songs kind of like a modern British version of 'What Would You Do' and it needs more of a serious rapper.

Love that Grace's random/creepy smiling in a strange pose in a scenic location has been inserted into another video. wub.gif

I didn't realise that Neil had left before they even filmed the video, I wonder if he even contributed to the song? I'm fascinated to know the real reason behind his departure as it's a huge shock and he doesn't seem to mention any of the other members in his leaving message.

Posted by: danG Oct 21 2016, 05:52 PM

This is very good! dance.gif Sounds amazing for the winter too, should be a big hit.

DAILY STRUGGLE

Posted by: Ðøßßø Oct 21 2016, 09:56 PM

Well it's certainly not on the same level as Tears, not feeling it on first listen, very much a potential to grow but not instant like almost all of their singles have been for me to date.

Strings at the start & end are nice!

I dont mind Sean Paul in it but the tropical production is so generic I agree and with Stronger and Tears the production was very disco influenced and different to anything else around at the minute (it reminded me of The Shapeshifters back in the mid 2000s).

I hope Clean Bandit return to disco house production for their next song

It seems like Neil maybe was driving them down the imo brilliant funky/disco house direction with Stronger and Tears, so if this was the case and this new song is their new sound, it is quite a disappointment.

Yes I am not saying they should do funky house for every song, and a genre in trend like tropical house as used in Rockabye could have been good if they made it sufficiently different to most tropical house songs, but I dont think they have.

For a different tropical house song, look at Raging by Kygo and Kodaline, indie rock and even trance influences in it.

Posted by: cqmerqn Oct 21 2016, 10:37 PM

No it’s not xxxxxxxx

Posted by: J▲hq Oct 21 2016, 10:37 PM

Agree with those that think it would be better without Sean Paul, but Anne-Marie sounds very strong. Great catchy hook, I'm finding it more instant than Tears but I wouldn't say this is better because that ended up growing on me hugely.

Posted by: 24k Cody Oct 22 2016, 12:52 AM

Anne-Marie sounds very genuine here, which I LOVE. She's effortlessly telling the story, and her tone kinda reminds me of "Scars To Your Beautiful" a bit - it's so inspiring.

It does seem a bit generic until the last five seconds of their signature "insert Baroque composition here", kinda like "Come Over" a bit. I don't see the issue, however. It seems they continuously set the bar so high that the follow-ups tend to get more criticism than they deserve.

Posted by: mr_pmt Oct 22 2016, 01:42 AM

Let's face it, any song Sean Paul features in is better without him in it. Odious creature he is.

But, even him being in this is not enough to taint it for me. I disagree that it's generic tropical (a sound I am truly sick of myself). This is different, and it sounds really 90s and properly throws me back to that era, and I like that. I can't get enough of this. wub.gif

Ok so Rockabye is hands down the best song of the year and maybe the best song ever released in the history of music.

Posted by: Cremey Oct 22 2016, 10:21 AM

This is immediately my favourite of theirs. I thought from the featured artists that I'd be loving it, but even more obsessed with it than I thought I would be.
Sean Paul will forever be my fave.

I expected to be stanning Sean Paul here but it's actually Anne-Marie who was far more impressive! Her vocals are incredible here, easily the best that I've heard them sound. wub.gif

Loving this anyway! Soooo catchy and the production is on point.

Posted by: Jake Oct 24 2016, 08:55 AM

this is f***ing incredible on so many levels; -an excellent video, perfectly edited, the star power of anne-marie, i never knew she was so *.*

i know this is the lovechild of ace of base's 'all that she wants' and the single version of 'cheap thrills' but i think it works perfectly...easily their best single and one of the songs of the year. how fabulous.

DAILY STRUGGLE

Posted by: Mango Oct 24 2016, 10:56 AM

CAN'T GET ENOUGH of this wub.gif and I'm happy it's getting pretty much unanimous Buzzjack love too biggrin.gif and for those saying it's a departure from their sound, it's hardly a million miles from the sound of 'Come Over'. If anything, it's nice that not all of their songs have the same vibe. I wish their trademark classical strings were more prominent in it though, rather than just tacked on at the start and end, as some have already said. Anyway I'm rooting for this to become a big #1 smash!

Posted by: spinning adam~ Oct 24 2016, 11:05 AM

Oh this is quite nice, even if it seems to be moving away from their signature sound a bit biggrin.gif

Posted by: Dobbo Dec 24 2016, 11:44 PM

I don't think they'll struggle to follow Rockabye, after all no one expected them to be able to ever match Rather Be but this song has gone and truly outdone that (not on pure sales admittedly but I genuinely think this song will be the more remembered in future years).

For me Tears 9/10 - discounted 1 point for pitched vocals but still a brilliant vocal funky house tune.
Rockabye 6/10 A great song (I actually like Sean Paul's rap unlike many Buzzjackers) but the production is tropical and generic, not enough violins.

Posted by: Liаm Dec 25 2016, 03:21 PM

I prefer Tears too but both are absolutely brilliant in different ways, can't wait to see what guests they get for the album!

This or Cheap Thrills probably, we've had a bit of a Sean Paul-aissance in recent times laugh.gif

Posted by: BillyH Jan 2 2017, 02:45 AM

Kinda cool to see the back of my head in that performance tongue.gif Only the third Christmas #1 I've seen live I think, and the only one in the year it was actually #1!

(the other two were PSB in 2009 and Human League in 2012...I did see Leona once but not sure if she did AMLT)

I still love this track, it's been so rare these last four years that a big hit I actually like arrives so when one does it feels extra special! It's those Europop-circa-1997 instrumental bits in the chorus I adore biggrin.gif
