For the 5th week in a row it's Post Malone blocked from #1 due to streaming. Otherwise there's a big shuffle in the top 10, Dua Lipa's tour sends "IDGAF" to #3 almost out of nowhere after seemingly peaking. Marshmello & Anne-Marie recently hit #1 on iTunes and "FRIENDS" now hits the top 5, Marshmello's 3rd song to do so and simultaneously surpassing "Silence" and "Wolves" which both peaked at #5. I hope not to have to mention it much more, but "Freaky Friday" hits the top 5, and makes me realise that it's Chris Brown's highest charting single since 2015's "Do It Again" with Pia Mia which also hit #5. Surprisingly that was also his most recent top 50 hit until now. "Love Lies" also climbs into the top 10 which is Khalid's 4th, and looks like it could climb much higher soon as it has a strong position on both sales and streams. Shawn Mendes comes through with the two biggest debuts. "In My Blood" is his 4th top 10 hit, though it may be difficult for it to peak at #4 which all his other top 10 hits have done. The Drake remix also helps "Lemon" get a 2nd week in the top 50 with a new peak to boot. Stagnant album chart is the theme, and iTunes doesn't want it to stop because they had all of Ed Sheeran's albums discounted this past week, which could make for a tough battle for The Weeknd's new EP next week. Former X Factor winner and nearly Eurovision winner Dami Im returns with her 4th top 10 album, the 3rd of which that is comprised largely of covers. George Ezra is yet to return to the ARIA Singles chart with his 2nd album ("Paradise" is selling well so it could get there soon), but he does manage a 2nd top 10 album. His debut album reached #4 on a slow January week so this is his highest album chart position apart from that week. Lastly we've got local act Wolfe Brothers who have been slowly improving their peaks with each new release. They've scored their 2nd top 10 album by debuting at #9, 1 spot higher than their last. |

It should make some more progress. It's got really good airplay and decent sales, and streaming is picking up now that it's on Hot Hits Australia. It's actually kind of wild that in 2018, David Guetta currently has 3 songs in the ARIA Chart (though all quite low down)

Haha, you're right, it is odd! Also when I made my comment I didn't really think that it must've only had 2 days of sales/streams to chart (am I right?)

I wasn't sure so I just checked, but it was released on the Friday at the start of the week and was consistently around #30 on iTunes, just didn't have playlist support yet so the streaming was almost non-existent. In the 60s on Spotify now so it could sneak into the top 50 possibly.

Out of interest, do you have data on how well "Chateau" by Angus & Julia Stone performed in the charts?

What sort of data do you mean? Chart run, total sales, sales vs. streams? I have the full chart run and could probably estimate the other two.

Unfortunate timing as I don't have my pc on me right now so I'll get back to you on the run when I can, but for the sales I'd put it on roughly 140-150k (so double platinum, it's currently certified platinum x1), probably 80-85% of that from streams, Hot Hits Australia has been very kind to it

Thank you! That is a good run, a good number of weeks too. I noticed it was inside the top 50 whilst I was in Australia and added it to my playlist; really liking it.

It's like a junior version of their 2010 hit Big Jet Plane, which might be the highest selling non-top 20 single (apart from Dark Horse). They kind of did the Imagine Dragons thing where the album between didn't get any major hits, so they sort of gradually won fans over again with another long running hit.

I'll have to check that out - I haven't paid any attention to them before! I'm listening to their current album now and it seems great to chill to and certainly to have on in the background whilst I work.

They've been around for so long, which is why I found it surprising how much playlist support the song got, I remember seeing the video for Private Lawns on TV back in 2006! I think The Beast, Heart Beats Slow and Cellar Door have resonated most with me over the years, though I remember hearing Santa Monica Dream in Life Is Strange a couple years back and it really clicked with me after doing nothing for me at the time.

was a big big big fan of Angus & Julia in the very beginning, their best material by far is the first EPs and their debut album,
after that they lost it a bit and each album was a bit less inspired and they're amazing live I recommend to check their early material, Mango tree, Just a boy, Private lawns, they're all incredible tracks |

To the surprise of nobody, Drake's run gets into double digits at #1. Where he stands next week gets a bit shaky. With his new song out, "God's Plan" has been shoved rather low on Hot Hits Australia, and is also out of the top 40 most played songs on Australian radio (top 40 includes neither the #1 song on iTunes or Spotify right now, which is a curious oddity). For that iTunes #1 from Bad Wolves, it might be their chance to crack the top 50 this week, not just through stronger sales, but the fact that Spotify has yet to update Thursday's streams. Unlike the UK Charts, ARIA seem to take an even more lax approach and will probably pretend nothing has happened and just have 6 days of Spotify streams on the chart. As far as this week's concerned, it's a bit of a quiet release as in the whole top 100, there are 7 debuts this week and 6 of them are just the entire tracklisting to The Weeknd's new EP, which becomes the 2nd ever 'album' to have every track chart in the top 50 after Ed Sheeran last year. That's not enough to get The Weeknd to #1 on the album chart, which his last 2 albums have both done. The lingering effect of Ed Sheeran's tour continues, helped more than slightly by some major discounting efforts from Warner, no doubt irritating all the people who bought the albums en masse at full price just weeks ago. Speaking of back catalogues that I imagine are helped by discounts, Taylor Swift's "1989" nearly overtakes "reputation" already(!), just 1 position behind this week. I imagine we could finally have a new #1 album next week though thanks to Kylie Minogue, though there's also the consistent strong sellers in Hillsong with a new album as well. |

I think the ratio of how much a stream counts towards the chart needs to be reduce, the sales chart is drastically different to the official one here So many songs are really successful in iTunes etc. yet that success never carries over to the actual chart

The thing about it is that at this point, the #1 digital track is only selling like 3,000 copies in a week, so it's harder to justify that it's part of the cultural zeitgeist while multiple songs crack 1,000,000 streams every week. It often feels like I'm the only person under 30 who still buys music based on what the iTunes chart looks like sometimes
