Shawn Mendes drops from #1 to #17, oops! Taking his place at #1 are Alabama Shakes, who claimed 96K units last week, 91K of which were proper sales. This is an improvement from their last album Boys & Girls, which debuted at #16 but peaked at #6, and has sold 744,000 to date!

Alabama Shakes Scores Its First No. 1 Album on Billboard 200 Chart
By Keith Caulfield | April 29, 2015 11:00 AM EDT Rock band Alabama Shakes earns its first No. 1 on the Billboard 200 chart as its new album, Sound & Color, arrives in the top slot. The set, which was released April 21 on ATO Records, moved 96,000 equivalent album units in the week ending April 26, according to Nielsen Music. The Billboard 200 chart ranks the most popular albums of the week based on multi-metric consumption, which includes traditional album sales, track equivalent albums (TEA) and streaming equivalent albums (SEA). The bulk of Sound & Color’s overall unit launch was powered by traditional album sales, as the set sold 91,000 copies -- the band’s best sales week ever. The new album also debuts at No. 1 on the Top Album Sales chart. The group’s first full-length album, 2012’s Boys & Girls, peaked at No. 6 on the Billboard 200 dated March 9, 2013 -- nearly a year after its release. It spawned the No. 1 single “Hold On,” which topped the Adult Alternative Songs airplay chart on June 23, 2012 and later scored a Grammy Award nomination for best rock performance. Boys & Girls has sold 744,000. The new album was led by the single “Don’t Wanna Fight,” which has spent the past six straight weeks in the No. 2 slot on the Adult Alternative chart. (It’s been stuck behind Mumford & Sons’ “Believe” for the last five frames.) Sound & Color is the second No. 1 album for ATO Records, and first in seven years, following Radiohead’s In Rainbows. That set, released on TBD Records through ATO, topped the tally dated Jan. 19, 2008. Sound & Color is also the first independently-distributed No. 1 album on the Billboard 200 since Jason Aldean’s Old Boots, New Dirt spent a week at the top (its debut frame) on the list dated Oct. 25, 2014. Last week’s No. 1 album, Shawn Mendes’ Handwritten, falls to No. 17 with 20,000 units (down 83 percent) in its second week. It also declines by 89 percent in pure album sales (to 12,000 sold -- down from its 106,000 sales start). The Furious 7 soundtrack is a non-mover at No. 2 on the latest Billboard 200 with 62,000 units (down 21 percent). The second and final debut in the top 10 comes from rapper Yelawolf, who sees his new album Love Story bow at No. 3 with 58,000 units. It’s the best showing yet for the artist, who previously topped out at No. 27 with his last album, 2011’s Radioactive. Love Story also logs his largest sales week ever, as the set opens with 51,000 copies sold (surpassing his previous high, when Radioactive launched with 41,000). Drake’s If You’re Reading This It’s Too Late climbs back up the chart, rising 10-4 with 48,000 units (up 35 percent) after the CD version of the album was released on April 21. The set was previously only available as a download. The new CD edition also boasted two new bonus tracks. In terms of pure album sales, If You’re Reading This It’s Too Late rose by 123 percent for the week (zipping from 12,000 sold to 28,000; it also climbs 20-3 on the Top Album Sales chart). Back on the Billboard 200, the Fifty Shades of Grey soundtrack rises 6-5 with 38,000 units (though it’s down 11 percent) and Taylor Swift’s 1989 climbs 7-6 with 36,000 (down 6 percent). Sam Smith’s In the Lonely Hour steps 8-7 (just under 36,000; down 4 percent), Ed Sheeran’s x ascends 9-8 (32,000; down 11 percent) and Sam Hunt’s Montevallo jumps 13-9 (just under 32,000; up 1 percent). The latter profits from the artist’s exposure on the Academy of Country Music Awards (April 19), where he performed “Take Your Time” and was nominated for new artist of the year. Meghan Trainor’s Title closes out the top 10, rising two slots to No. 10 with 30,000 units (down 5 percent). Billboard 200 Chart Moves: Luke Bryan's 'Party' Now His Biggest-Selling Album Ever By Keith Caulfield | May 01, 2015 8:44 PM EDT Let’s take a closer look at some of the action on the chart: — Shawn Mendes, Handwritten - No. 17 — Last week’s No. 1 album tumbles to No. 17 in its second week, down 89 percent in traditional sales (from 106,000 to 12,000) — the largest second-week percentage drop for a No. 1-debuting album since Nielsen began tracking data in 1991. Handwritten’s decline is likely owed to how its first week was mostly driven by months of advance pre-orders. Thus, when the album’s second week arrived, there wasn’t a large enough demand (in relation to its built-up first week) to prevent a large drop-off. The previous largest second-week fall for a No. 1 debut was tallied by Madonna’s MDNA in 2012, when it eroded by 86.7 percent. Like Handwritten, MDNA’s decline was significant because its first-week sales were bolstered by sales from a concert ticket/album promotion as well as preorders. — Nick Jonas, Nick Jonas - No. 27 — Nick Jonas’ self-titled album celebrates its six month anniversary on the charts as the set spends a 24th week on the Billboard 200. It moves 29-27 with 16,000 equivalent album units moved in the week ending April 26 (down 10 percent, according to Nielsen Music). And, with another 4,000 copies sold, the album’s total sales rise to 182,000 and surpass those of Jonas’ previous album, 2010’s Who I Am (179,000). The latter was credited to Nick Jonas & The Administration and debuted and peaked at No. 3 — three spots higher than his new album’s thus far peak (No. 6). However, Who I Am fell off the chart after just eight weeks, while Nick Jonas has proved to be a far sturdier chart performer. The new album was ushered in nine months ago when first single “Chains” premiered and peaked at No. 3 on the Billboard + Twitter Top Tracks chart dated Aug. 9, 2014. While the song initially failed to catch on with radio, it found new life after second single “Jealous” took off. “Jealous” debuted on the Pop Songs airplay chart dated Sept, 27, 2014, and peaked at No. 2 on Jan. 3. (That same month, it peaked at No. 7 on the Billboard Hot 100 — his first solo top 10 hit on the list.) “Chains” finally made its Pop Songs debut on Feb. 7 and has so far reached No. 11. On the May 9 chart, it holds steady at its peak, and posts a 9 percent gain in spins at the format. — Luke Bryan, Crash My Party – No. 40 — As the singer’s fourth studio album sells another 7,000 copies, its cumulative rises total to 2.432 million, surpassing Tailgates & Tanlines (2.429 million) to become Bryan’s biggest-selling album ever. His next-largest sellers are Doin’ My Thing (972,000), Spring Break… Here to Party (605,000) and I’ll Stay Me (561,000). — Tom DeLonge, To the Stars… – No. 70 — DeLonge finally charts an album (8,000 units) under his own name, after tallying entries as part of Blink-182, Box Car Racer and Angels and Airwaves. — MercyMe, Welcome to the New – No. 106 — Sales of the release during stops along the act's concert tour, along with discounted pricing (to $5) at Family Christian stores, help lift it by 220 percent in sales. — Apocalyptica, Shadowmaker – No. 190 — The Finnish metal band’s first album since 2010’s 7th Symphony (which peaked at No. 31) is also its first with a single primary vocalist: Franky Perez.
