It's been over 5 years since the release of W.E. - the romance drama film directed and co-written by Madonna that explored the lives of two women, both set in different time periods. One was Wallis Simpson, an American divorcée who had a relationship with King Edward VIII, eventually leading to his abdication; the other was Wally Winthrop, a New Yorker from 1998 who was fascinated by the 'perfect' relationship between Wallis and Edward. The film weaves back and forth in time as we watch each woman's journey and learn similarities in each of their experiences.

The main characters were portrayed by Abbie Cornish (Wally), Andrea Riseborough (Wallis), Oscar Isaac (Evgeni), Richard Coyle (William) and James D'Arcy (Edward VIII) - actors who had experienced success before and since, however this was not enough to gain public interest in the film, as it only grossed £560k/$868k from its £18m/$29m budget.

I personally really enjoyed and continue to enjoy the film and I feel it was always going to get a negative reception the moment people saw Madonna's name. Has anyone else watched the film? If so, is it really as bad as the figures and critics would suggest or is it a hidden treasure that can be appreciated by Madonna fans?

I really enjoyed the story. It may have been a little bit fan-fictiony at times (if that's the right word) but it kept me entertained throughout. Some great character driven moments and just the right amount of darker, dramatic scenes.

I absolutely agree with you about it being visually stunning though. The attention to detail in regards to settings and costume as well as the choices of camera angles and lighting and whatnot just lifts the whole viewing experience. Madonna may get her criticism for film writing and acting, but directing and design seems to be her forte.
